Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
One of the most critical battles of the Afghan War is now revealed as never before. Lions of Kandahar is an inside account from the unique perspective of an active-duty U.S. Army Special Forces commander, an unparalled warrior with multiple deployments to the theater who has only recently returned from combat.
Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. The battlefield was the Panjwayi Valley, a densely packed warren of walled compounds that doubled neatly as enemy bunkers, lush orchards, and towering marijuana stands, laced through with treacherous irrigation ditches. A mass exodus of civilians heralded the carnage to come.
Dispatched as a diversionary force in support of the main coalition attack, Bradleys Special Forces A-team and two others, along with their longtime Afghan Army allies, watched from across the valley as the NATO force was quickly engulfed in a vicious counterattack. Key to relieving it and calling in effective air strikes was possession of a modest patch of high ground called Sperwan Ghar. Bradleys small detachment assaulted the hill and, in the midst of a savage and unforgettable firefight, soon learned they were facing nearly a thousand seasoned fighters - from whom they seized an impossible victory.
Now Bradley recounts the whole remarkable story as it actually happened. The blistering trek across Afghanistans infamous Red Desert. The eerie traces of the elusive Taliban. The close relations with the Afghan people and army, a primary mission focus. Sperwan Ghar itself: unremitting waves of fire from machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades; a targeted truck turned into an inferno; the death trap of a cut-off compound. Most important: the men, Americans and Afghans alike - the shaky medic with nerves of steel and a surgeons hands in battle; the tireless sergeant who seems to be everywhere at once; the soft-spoken intelligence officer with laser-sharp insight; the diminutive Afghan commander with a Goliath-sized heart; the cool maverick who risks all to rescue a grievously wounded comrade - each unique, all indelible in their everyday exercise of extraordinary heroism.

Kandahar Battle Described As Never Before
What made the experience of listening to Lions of Kandahar the most enjoyable?
The experience that made listening to Lions of Kandahar the most enjoyable was that it was a very edge of your seat listen. There was always action, action, action. I don't believe that any of the men who were a participant in the battle of Kandahar ever slept over 3 hours without another man pulling on his boot to wake him up.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Lions of Kandahar?
One of the most memorable moments of Lions of Kandahar was when the Taliban and American forces were having another fierce battle and two Americans and four Afghans went to the school to conduct surveillance. The school was situated in the compound that had been won in one of the many vicious battles. The Taliban discovered them and they had to flee. The medic left his position to attend to the injured men.

    Title: Lone Survivor
Subtitle: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the Lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10
    Author: Patrick Robinson, Marcus Luttrell
    Narrator: Kevin T. Collins
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 17 mins

    Release date: 05-01-12
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 7821 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.
This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.
A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

Enthralling and authentic story of valor in combat
    Any additional comments?
Don't pay too much attention to the complaints about either the narrator or the author's conservative politics. The reader may bother some, but I listened to this book straight through over the course of several flights out west, and loved it -- the only time I took it out was literally at TSA. As for his political views - he is a Navy SEAL, from Texas, right? Seriously - the narration is fine, and the authors occasional politics asides are amusing and endearing even to a liberal like as me, Well worth the credit.
True Tale of Courage and Honor
Where does Lone Survivor rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I've read quite a few histoy/military history books so far, and this ranks right up there as one of the best tales to date. Dick Couch's 'Warrior Elite' edges this one out as the best so far, and I mention it becuae there is a relation betwen the two books. In this story, Marcus Latrell, USN SEAL, talks about his training with BUD/S class 228, the same class that Mr. Couch expertly documented in his book.
The novel begins a bit slow, and the readers attempt at a 'texas good ole boy' accent is distracting, but once the story shifts to Operation Red Wing, the pace picks up. If you want to be inspired, truely inspired, then read this AND 'Warrior Elite'. Navy SEALS are not just the toughest, best trained fighting division in the world, they are also an ultra rare breed of men. Their stories are simply amazing.
Don't Bother With The Movie, This Is The Real Deal
What did you love best about Lone Survivor?
I loved the way that Marcus' family was supported so completely by his community and his shipmates.

    Audie Award Nominee, Humor, 2013
For fans of Tina Fey and David Sedaris - Internet star Jenny Lawson, aka The Bloggess, makes her literary debut.
Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives - the ones we'd like to pretend never happened - are in fact the ones that define us. In Let's Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes listeners on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor.
Chapters include: "Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel", "A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband", "My Vagina Is Fine. Thanks for Asking", and "And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane".

How the Bloggess almost made me crash my car!
    Any additional comments?
Oh, I do so adore The Bloggess! She has the most amazingly twisted and wonderful way of looking at the world that Ive ever encountered. And since the audiobook is narrated by the woman herself, it makes the book that much better. She swears! She screams! She has silly asides! And to cap it all off, she has out-takes at the end! My only problem listening to this book is that I listen while Im driving (I should have known better, probably), and there were several times I feared for my life, driving down the road with tears streaming, face contorted in laughter, afraid Id crash the car at any moment. Shes just that damned funny. BUY THIS AUDIOBOOK!
    Cute story, light entertainment.
Jenny's no Sarah Vowell or Tina Fey but the story is an enjoyable romp through her life. Not a rib splitter but rather a light, easy story with some fun and humorous interludes. This is one of those books that I can't imagine being read by other than the author and Jenny does a fine job of narration. I'd give it a 3.5 overall if that were allowed.
    Brand new fan
Super fun, bright and refreshing. Jenny Lawson is like your best friend/alter ego with no filter, ADHD and a blogging problem who says the things that you are embarrassed to even think about. I loved every minute of it.
Actually, not for fans of Sedaris and Fey
This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I *really* wanted to like this book. Maybe diehard devotees of Jenny Lawson's blog might like it more than I. I thought some of her essays were great, but couldn't stand an entire book of her. It was just... too forced.
Has Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir) turned you off from other books in this genre?
    No.
Would you be willing to try another one of Jenny Lawsons performances?
    Probably not.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Let's Pretend This Never Happened (A Mostly True Memoir)?
I would have trimmed a lot from the book as a whole. Jenny is witty and touching, but her sarcasm and schtick wore thin on me after the first half of the book. Her journey of self-awareness feels contrived and forced--- as if her editor told her that she had to summarize what she learned and how she grew from each anecdote. Her essay about miscarriage and living with chronic illness was really powerful and moving. Her father is fascinating, as is her upbringing.

    Title: Wild
Subtitle: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail (Oprah's Book Club 2.0)
    Author: Cheryl Strayed
    Narrator: Bernadette Dunne
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 13 hrs and 6 mins

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 16213 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Wild is a powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe - and built her back up again.
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise. But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.
Strayed faced down rattlesnakes and black bears, intense heat and record snowfalls, and both the beauty and loneliness of the trail. Told with great suspense and style, sparkling with warmth and humor, Wild vividly captures the terrors and pleasures of one young woman forging ahead against all odds on a journey that maddened, strengthened, and ultimately healed her.
    Critic Reviews:
No one can write like Cheryl Strayed.
Wild is one of the most unflinching and emotionally honest books I've read in a long time. It is about forgiveness and grief, bravery and hope. It is unforgettable. (Ann Hood, author of
    The Knitting Circle)
While reading Cheryl Strayeds stunning book about her arduous solo journey along the Pacific Crest Trail, I kept asking myself - what would I do if I were stripped bare of everything - money, job, community, even family and love? Thoreau once said, In wildness is the preservation of the world. For Strayed, it is clear that in wildness was the preservation of her soul. She reminds us, in her lyrical and courageous memoir
Wild, of what it means to be fully alive, even in the face of catastrophe, physical and psychic hardship, and loss." (Mira Bartók, author of
    The Memory Palace)
Cheryl Strayed can sure tell a story. In
Wild, she describes her journey from despair to transcendence with honesty, humor, and heart-cracking poignancy. This is a great book. (Mary Pipher, author of
    Reviving Ophelia and
    Seeking Peace)

    Glad I Took the Trip
I am probably one of the last people to read and review this book because I tend to shy away from most Oprah selections. Yes, Oprah has inspired thousands to pick up a book who otherwise might not have and catapulted authors into super stardom and for that I applaud her and am thankful. I just tend to stray from over-hyped books at first. There, I said it; please don't hate me.
This selection was wonderful and here is why I enjoyed it. At 26, Cheryl was divorced from a man she loved; lost her supportive mother to cancer; abusive father left around age 6; disconnected from siblings; and was pulling out of a previous spiral into the world of heroin. Finding herself in a dark place, she turned to the guide for hiking the Pacific Coast Trail as many people turn to the Bible or any other source of enlightenment to find themselves.
Strayed shares abundant, almost copious details from her 2 months journey, laying out all the ugly and pretty inbetween with a raw, soul-searching style.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
He is the deadliest American sniper ever, called "the devil" by the enemies he hunted and "the legend" by his Navy SEAL brothers.
From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. The Pentagon has officially confirmed more than 150 of Kyles kills (the previous American record was 109), but it has declined to verify the astonishing total number for this book. Iraqi insurgents feared Kyle so much they named him al-Shaitan ("the devil") and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle earned legendary status among his fellow SEALs, Marines, and U.S. Army soldiers, whom he protected with deadly accuracy from rooftops and stealth positions. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyles masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.
A native Texan who learned to shoot on childhood hunting trips with his father, Kyle was a champion saddle-bronc rider prior to joining the Navy. After 9/11, he was thrust onto the front lines of the War on Terror, and soon found his calling as a world-class sniper who performed best under fire. He recorded a personal-record 2,100-yard kill shot outside Baghdad; in Fallujah, Kyle braved heavy fire to rescue a group of Marines trapped on a street; in Ramadi, he stared down insurgents with his pistol in close combat. Kyle talks honestly about the pain of war - of twice being shot and experiencing the tragic deaths of two close friends.
American Sniper also honors Kyle's fellow warriors, who raised hell on and off the battlefield. And in moving first-person accounts throughout, Kyle's wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their marriage and children, as well as on Chris.
Adrenaline-charged and deeply personal, American Sniper is a thrilling eyewitness account of war that only one man could tell.

It's been censored by the publisher
Look, I love this book. I love Chris Kyle. But his publisher, in what can only be described as a complete chicken-shit move, and some bullshit censorship, removed the sub-chapter about Jessa Venture that resulted in the Kyle family being sued. This is not the book that Chris wrote!
Other than it being incomplete, it's a fantastic read. And it's absolutely nothing like the movie by the same name. If you enjoyed the movie, definitely read the book. You'll come to appreciate Chris Kyle in a new light. But that means rewarding the publisher for censorship. And that pisses me off. But it's too late now, they've already absconded with my money.
I can't reward this incomplete work with a 5th star. But it would be 5 stars if it hadn't been censored.
Tremendously Enlightening, could not put it down
I am a married Mother of 1 Son and 2 Step-sons. I have never served in the military and honestly do not have any close ties to the Military, other than my Father who served in Korea and a cousin who was killed in Vietnam during the TET offensive. Though I would prefer the world was all Love and Light with no war ever; that is just not how it is.

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
When Desert Solitaire was first published in 1968, it became the focus of a nationwide cult. Rude and sensitive. Thought-provoking and mystical. Angry and loving. Both Abbey and this book are all of these and more. Here, the legendary author of The Monkey Wrench Gang, Abbey's Road and many other critically acclaimed books vividly captures the essence of his life during three seasons as a park ranger in southeastern Utah. This is a rare view of a quest to experience nature in its purest form -- the silence, the struggle, the overwhelming beauty. But this is also the gripping, anguished cry of a man of character who challenges the growing exploitation of the wilderness by oil and mining interests, as well as by the tourist industry.
Abbey's observations and challenges remain as relevant now as the day he wrote them. Today, Desert Solitaire asks if any of our incalculable natural treasures can be saved before the bulldozers strike again.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like a ride on a bucking bronco . . . rough, tough, combative. The author is a rebel and an eloquent loner. His is a passionately felt, deeply poetic book . . . set down in a lean, racing prose, in a close-knit style of power and beauty." (The New York Times Book Review)

Can Not Believe I Have Never Read This Book....
My boyfriend handed me this old yellowed paperback that he has been carrying around for years. I read about ten pages and knew I had to buy the audio version. This book was written in 1968 but the environmental theme is timeless and Mr. Abbey's dry sense of humor left me wishing that the book was longer. Many of the places in Utah where he went hiking are unfortunately gone due to dam building ( Glen Ellen Canyon) or overuse by a growing population (The Arches). "The wilderness is no longer wild" as anyone who loves the outdoors knows but the beauty of the National Parks as they once were will live on in this book. I wish I could put on my hiking shoes and travel back 50 years to the Utah Mr. Abbey enjoyed.
Makes you feel like you are there.
I retired to the west and live within several hours of Moab, I have been there several times on my Harley and never have I been disappointed. And Abbey's masterpiece will let you feel like you too are there but better yet, you are there before all the tourist like me found the place. Sit back and enjoy the west thru Abbey's eyes.
    Against the Grain
This is Edward Abbey's best book, a chronicle of his work as a park ranger and a love song to the American Desert. Alternately serious and funny, lyrical and preachy, the book is a loosely structured set of stories linked by place, so that the desert becomes a character of its own -- changeable, unforgiving, beautiful.
Michael Kramer is excellent, clear, nuanced, and well-paced. You get the feeling that you are hearing the author, himself, describing one of his adventures, or repeating a story he has heard.
A beautiful book, memories slightly tinged with regret, like stories told late at night in a bar, long after the jukebox is quiet.
    Wrong narrator for Abbey
I love this book - one of my true favorites - have read the actual book several times before downloading the audio version.

At one time, Corrie ten Boom would have laughed at the idea that she had a story to tell. For the first 50 years of her life, nothing out of the ordinary ever happened to her. She was a spinster watchmaker living contentedly with her sister and their elderly father in the tiny house over their shop in Haarlem. Their uneventful days, as regulated as their own watches, revolved around their abiding love for one another.
But with the Nazi invasion and occupation of Holland, everything changed. Corrie ten Boom and her family became leaders in the Dutch underground, hiding Jewish people in their home in a specially built room and aiding their escape from the Nazis. For their pains, all but Corrie found death in a concentration camp.

    Inspiring
    Any additional comments?
For me this was a difficult book to listen to. It is hard to say that a book about the cold and callous abuse suffered in prison and a concentration camp was wonderful. But, this book was just that, wonderful. I found myself horrified by much of this story of faith, family and survival. Carrie and her family set the standard of living their faith in love very high. The book is especially good because Carrie tells the reader so much about herself and the life she and her family lived before the war involved Holland. It made me feel I knew them and how they would cope and rise to any challenge presented. The best thing about the book was that it was an overview of a whole life. It wasn't just one awful phase plucked out of a life and told out of context. At the end I felt I understood the ten Boom family and their faith and rock like belief in prayer and God's love and abiding protection. Somehow this book was able to flesh out the true horror of WWII. It left me wondering about the stark contrast between the hate filled invaders and collaborators capable of such atrocities and the simple kindness and love exhibited by people like the ten Boom's. Carrie seems to have written the book as a challenge to others to choose to live a life of forgiveness, love and peace. Very inspiring.
    Inspirational
What did you love best about The Hiding Place?
I read this book in high school....many, many years behind me now, and to listen to this book just made me rekindle that forgiveness, love and understanding of God is all in His time. When our flesh can't do it God gives us the strength to put our hand out. Corrie and her sister Betsy were extraordinary women, I loved her story, How they conquered their time in a horrible place, always going forth with HOPE and FAITH.

A blueprint. A bible. What Sun Tzus Art of War was to ancient China, Pimp is to the streets. As real as you can get without jumping in, this is the story of Iceberg Slims life as he saw, felt, tasted, and smelled it. It is a trip through hell by the one man who lived to tell the talethe dangers of jail, addiction, and death that are still all too familiar for todays black community. By telling the story of one mans struggles and triumphs in an underground world, Pimp shows us the game doesnt change; it just has a different swagger.
Only Slim could tell this story and make the reader feel it. If you thought Hustle & Flow was the true pimp story, this book is where it all began. This is the heyday of the pimp, the hard-won pride and glory, small though it may be; the beginnings of pimp before it was dragged in front of the camera, before pimp juice and pimp style. Though it is a tale of his times, it will remain current and true for as long as there is a race bias, as long as there is a street life, as long as there is exploitation.

This is a Urban readers paradise. It tells it straight forward and as the actual character would view the situation. Very raw and paints vivid pictures.
What did you like best about this story?
    The Hardcore, Urban feel
What does Cary Hite bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He gives the emotion, feeling and the anger that you may not get from reading.
I have to thank Dave Chapelle for this...
I heard this mentioned during his Netflix special. As a white man who grew up in the most traditional and sheltered manner possible, I can't think of a more direct road to scraping the opaque naivete from my eyes about the underbelly of our society - black or white. My jaw was left agape more than once listening to this man's saga. But what's more, is the disgust I feel when I pause to reflect on the disgusting, vile behavior of the authority figures, institutions, or prominent social figures of his day who seem to simply drift across the stage of his life. Volumes could be written about the sins of his world. I don't mean those committed by him, but by you and me. We're all complicit.
    A must read.

My favorite character was Iceberg Slim. The reason is that I love the fact that he did not try to display himself as some kind of godlike figure, with this being an autobiography about his life. Instead he explained everything about his life, from child to middle-aged Man. From a non-pimp adolescent to a retired middle-aged Pimp. The good, the bad and the "extremely ugly." And from there he let the reading hear, feel, and interpret his story, as they so choose. Autobiographies like this are without a doubt "The most interesting."
    Which scene was your favorite?
    His entire 1st, jail stent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I did not have an extreme emotional reaction, but I did have an extreme intellectual reaction.
