Members Reviews:
Very underrated book, and one of the best books on both politics and psychology
Most books in the "political" category are designed to make you angry at the other side, and succeed at that. Others are designed to give you a deeper understanding of the facts, and leave you feeling smarter but without a sense of how it connects to you.
"Cracking the Code" is the rare book that reaffirmed my own political standings while simultaneously having *less* contempt for the other side. It works simultaneously as a lesson in political science and a self-help book, even though it's much more of a lesson in political science. Hartmann breaks down the basic motivations behind both left-wing and right-wing politics, and, in doing that, he shows very clearly how things are, in many ways, more complicated than they appear, and, in others, more simple than they appear.
The book should be required reading for anyone interested in American politics - especially people on the "left," but people on the right, too. It will give you a better understanding of how politics works and a lot less anger and frustration.
Feelings and Emotions over the Rational
After reading the reviews replete with encomiums for this book, I had to show the other side. Hartmann speaks about identifying modes people experience the world in: seeing, hearing, feeling; then their brains: lizard, dog or cat, and human (survival, emotional, rational). Anchor words to feelings (dog and cat brains) then to rational brain (human). Throughout the book he appeals to the dog cat brains (feelings and emotions) which he later says one must get them to focus, by creating a trance. This book is dangerously close to conversational hypnosis, and I hope the only people that have read it, are those who have reviewed it!
A true genious
I have a college degree in graphic design, communicating visually, so this book, communicating verbally was a great compliment to that for me.
Thom has figured it out! This book tells us the tricks talkers on both the left and the right use to create effective communication, so we can learn how to communicate better. This is a book anyone who wants to communicate better should read, who already know where they stand on the issues (this is a political book), but has trouble communicating them effectively to people. It goes into subtle language. Language with positive or negative associations. How the brain decodes language. Famous speeches and how they used the communication code to change the path of America. This book is a quick read, easy to understand, and very powerful. Its worth reading more than once. It could almost be used as a reference guide if you blog/forum political messages.. or even in your workplace in a non-political setting.
