    Eye opener
This book was well written about a subject that needed writing about. While the narrators didn't speak with the Rastafarian accents of the characters, this worked fine for those of us that aren't exposed to the accent on a regular basis and we could concentrate on the facts involved in this case. This tragedy could have happened to nearly anyone, and even I, a white middle class woman, have found myself afraid enough of our legal system to sincerely worry that this could actually happen to myself or someone that I love. Thank heavens for those who believe in innocence.
    Faith goes a long way!
This is not a type of book I would choose, but I'm thankful I did. It opened my eyes to the sad reality of the system and the true love of friends who believe in you and the strength it is needed to persevere to see the right becomes reality. Wow, this could happen in my life and how would I have handled it? Thank you!
    Wow!!!
Wow! if each of us has at least 1 friend like Carl in our lives, we are truly blessed! This true friendship that crosses over into family status! The injustice that befell Colin was past the point of ridiculous, but the love of that ne true friend that just wouldn't give up, truly made a difference.
And to think, through all the injustice, Colin nor Carl are not bitter, but better because of it! Wow!!!
Amazing Story of Injustice and Commitment
One man, Collin, is unjustly convicted of murder and another man, his friend Carl, is committed to setting him free. 21 years passed before that injustice could be reversed, and Carl could see Collin set free.
Good example of forgiveness and making a difference
I liked the fortitude of all the characters. How they never gave up. Relying on their faith of what they been taught throughout their life. Its amazing Colin, had no bitterness. Was grateful for everything, no matter his cost. Grateful to his friend Carl. What a blessing and example of true friendship. Very few people live with the blessing of such a friend. He gave a lot for his friend. Best heart ever. The more he gives, the more he lives. If only more in this world could live by this motto. He is an inspiration to me to be better, serve more and sacrifice for those I love or the injustices and suffering of others.

Narrator: Kirby Heyborne, Cassandra Campbell, Rebekkah Ross
    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 30 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
This is the never-before-told, riveting true story about a teenage Christian girl who was seduced online by a charming young Muslim man from Kosovo, and her father who ultimately worked with the FBI to save her from disappearing forever.
The Baldwins were a strong Christian family living in Plano, Texas. When their 17-year-old daughter, Mackenzie, met Aadam in a random-match online chat room, she fell for his good looks, his charm, and his respectful conversation. He told her he lived in New York, and they began an online friendship.
But over the course of a few months, Aadam revealed that he actually lived in Kosovo and had only pretended to live in New York so Mackenzie would keep chatting with him. The more attached she became to Aadam, the more detached she became from her family.
John and Stephanie, Mackenzie's parents, had no clue what was behind their daughter's change in personality, her surprising interest in Islam, her suddenly modest dress, and her withdrawal from friends and family. When Mackenzie's attachment to Aadam increased even more and they became "engaged", she started making plans to secretly fly to Kosovo, where she and Aadam would be married.
But 25 days before Mackenzie was scheduled to fly to Kosovo, John found out about his daughter's dangerous plan when three of her friends came forward. John contacted the FBI and asked for help. Though the FBI did not believe Aadam was trying to radicalize Mackenzie, they were concerned about his intentions, as that part of Kosovo was known for sex trafficking, human trafficking, and citizenship frauds. Kosovo was no place for an unaccompanied, naïve teenager to secretly travel and marry a stranger she knew only through online chats. Within the limited time remaining before Mackenzie's departure, John and Stephanie had to confront Mackenzie and stop her before she would be lost to them forever.
Told from the viewpoint of both father and daughter, Almost Gone follows Mackenzie's network of lies and deceit and her parents' escalating bewilderment and alarm. More than a cautionary tale, this is the incredible story of unconditional parental love, unwavering faith, and how God helped a family save their daughter from a relationship that jeopardized not only her happiness but also her safety.

Great book, all need to hear or read.
My only feedback is that the voice of Mac was annoying. Maybe its just that teenage girl voice sound.

    Title: Breaking Free
Subtitle: How I Escaped Polygamy, the FLDS Cult, and My Father, Warren Jeffs
    Author: Rachel Jeffs
    Narrator: Rachel Jeffs
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 3 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-14-17
    Publisher: Harper Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 267 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In this searing memoir of survival in the spirit of Stolen Innocence, the daughter of Warren Jeffs, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the FLDS Church, takes you deep inside the secretive polygamist Mormon fundamentalist cult run by her family and how she escaped it.
Born into the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Rachel Jeffs was raised in a strict patriarchal culture defined by subordinate sister wives and men they must obey. No one in this radical splinter sect of the Mormon Church was more powerful or terrifying than its leader, Warren Jeffs - Rachel's father.
Living outside mainstream Mormonism and federal law, Jeffs arranged marriages between underage girls and middle-aged and elderly members of his congregation. In 2006 he gained international notoriety when the FBI placed him on its 10 Most Wanted List. Though he is serving a life sentence for child sexual assault, Jeffs' iron grip on the church remains firm and his edicts to his followers increasingly restrictive and bizarre.
In Breaking Free, Rachel blows the lid off this taciturn community made famous by John Krakauer's best-selling Under the Banner of Heaven to offer a harrowing look at her life with Warren Jeffs and the years of physical and emotional abuse she suffered. Sexually assaulted, compelled into an arranged polygamous marriage, locked away in "houses of hiding" as punishment for perceived transgressions, and physically separated from her children, Rachel, Jeffs' first plural daughter by his second of more than 50 wives, eventually found the courage to leave the church in 2015. But Breaking Free is not only her story - Rachel's experiences illuminate those of her family and the countless others who remain trapped in the strange world she left behind.
A shocking and mesmerizing memoir of faith, abuse, courage, and freedom, Breaking Free is an exposé of religious extremism and a beacon of hope for anyone trying to overcome personal obstacles.
Rachel Jeffs grew up in the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, the polygamous Mormon sect, which she escaped in 2015. Rachel lives in Idaho with her five children and two dogs.

    American Taliban in our midst
A must listen. FLDS is monstrous. Rachel Jeffs has my utmost respect and I hope for her and her childrens happiness.
    Excellent book.
Very well written. An inspiration to anyone who feels trapped in any way. Rachel you are an inspiration.
Heart breaking addition to the FLDS cult story
I first say Rachel Jeffs on the TV show "Escaping Polygamy" (she talks about writing the book on the show in an interview.) I think most of the reads who pick up this title do so because they've read autobiographies by Carolyn Jessup and Elissa Wall and "Under the Banner of Heaven".
Rachel said in the afterward that she wrote this book to help her process her life inside FLDS as the daughter of the prophet, Warren Jeffs (making her FLDS royalty), as a 3rd wife and mother of 5, and as a collateral damage in Jeff's well-publicised fall from grace.
Rachel describes a sequestered childhood with her beloved sisters, and her father's manipulative sexual and mental abuse.

    Title: Member of the Family
Subtitle: My Story of Charles Manson, Life Inside His Cult, and the Darkness That Ended the Sixties
    Author: Dianne Lake, Deborah Herman
    Narrator: Dianne Lake
    Format: Unabridged

    Release date: 10-24-17
    Publisher: Harper Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 236 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In this poignant and disturbing memoir of lost innocence, coercion, survival, and healing, Dianne Lake chronicles her years with Charles Manson, revealing for the first time how she became the youngest member of his Family and offering new insights into one of the 20th century's most notorious criminals and life as one of his "girls".
At age 14, Dianne Lake - with little more than a note in her pocket from her hippie parents granting her permission to leave them - became one of "Charlie's girls", a devoted acolyte of cult leader Charles Manson. Over the course of two years, the impressionable teenager endured manipulation, psychological control, and physical abuse as the harsh realities and looming darkness of Charles Manson's true nature revealed itself. From Spahn ranch and the group acid trips to The Beatles' White Album and Manson's dangerous messiah complex, Dianne tells the riveting story of the group's descent into madness as she lived it.
Though she never participated in any of the group's gruesome crimes and was purposely insulated from them, Dianne was arrested with the rest of the Manson Family and eventually learned enough to join the prosecution's case against them. With the help of good Samaritans, including the cop who first arrested her and later adopted her, the courageous young woman eventually found redemption and grew up to lead an ordinary life.
While much has been written about Charles Manson, this riveting account from an actual Family member is a chilling portrait that recreates in vivid detail one of the most horrifying and fascinating chapters in modern American history.

Dianne sets the record straight . . . Finally.
I found it interesting hearing what life was like for Dianne (Snake) growing up as a young hippie child in the 60s, but the part that drew me in the MOST, were the events after she joined The Family. I found myself hating to break away from the story (to do something else), and would often say - okay, just FIVE more minutes. Did that a lot. Lol.
There were MANY surprising little details that I never knew about, and over the years were wrongly attributed to Manson himself - or to others as having said or done. For me, THAT made it all worthwhile. It was great to finally hear something NEW in this case, and not simply the same old rehashing of events, but REAL everyday life at the ranch, and then some! Wow. Very pleased that I gave this one a shot.
I thought Dianne did a pretty decent job with the narration ... and in THIS instance, I WOULD rather listen to it straight from the horses mouth so to speak, than have some sing-songy storytime lady voice. If reading about the Manson case intrigues you, then this is a must-get. Some good juicy stuff in here :)
    Riveting Story
The book begins a bit slowly, but the background info Dianne Lake gives is an integral part of her story. Once she gets into her tale of life with Charlie and the girls, it is fascinating in a train wreck kind of way; hard to listen but harder to turn away. As mother of a teen who is about the age she was when she joined the Family, it's horrifying to hear how her parents allowed this to happen. I applaud the author's courage and honesty in revealing her story.

    Publisher's Summary:
Discover the classic behind-the-scenes chronicle of John E. Douglas' 25-year career in the FBI Investigative Support Unit, where he used psychological profiling to delve into the minds of the country's most notorious serial killers and criminals - the basis for the upcoming Netflix original series.
In chilling detail, the legendary Mindhunter takes us behind the scenes of some of his most gruesome, fascinating, and challenging cases - and into the darkest recesses of our worst nightmares.
During his 25- year career with the Investigative Support Unit, Special Agent John Douglas became a legendary figure in law enforcement, pursuing some of the most notorious and sadistic serial killers of our time: the man who hunted prostitutes for sport in the woods of Alaska, the Atlanta child murderer, and Seattle's Green River killer, the case that nearly cost Douglas his life.
As the model for Jack Crawford in The Silence of the Lambs, Douglas has confronted, interviewed, and studied scores of serial killers and assassins, including Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, and Ed Gein, who dressed himself in his victims' peeled skin. Using his uncanny ability to become both predator and prey, Douglas examines each crime scene, reliving both the killer's and the victim's actions in his mind, creating their profiles, describing their habits, and predicting their next moves.

I have purchased every book J.E.D. Has made available
And this one by far was the most interesting to me in terms of cases. One thing about his books , he always takes the first 3 chapters or so ( about 2 hours), talking about his background that gets tedious and Ill be honest, I usually skip those chapters. This one is no different and even with the loss of the first hour or so, I would still recommend this for the really , juicy, detailed and interesting cases that after his initial bio , seems to be back to back for the next ten hours.
Great book, Im hard to please and I really liked this one a lot.
    Interesting but distractingly self-congratulatory
John Douglas writes of his part in the establishment of the behavioral analysis unit focused on criminal profiling at the FBI, and while much of it is compelling it is at tones obscured by Douglas' ego. It's clear that all but two is the cases presented in this book are depicted as total success stories. His profiles are always perfect, or if not perfect the only details he misses are trivial, and he always rides in on his white horse to save the day. Whether the facts are fudged to depict him in a perfect light or he cherry picked cases, it's hard to know, but my take on this is confirmed by the cases he presents on crimes that were unsolved at the time of his writing. In the case of the Green River Killer, his profile turns out to be mostly accurate but he asserts that he believes the series of murders are probably committed by three different killers. This is most certainly a theory he would've omitted had Gary Ridgeway been caught at the time he wrote the book. I say this because erroneous predictions like this were completely absent in the other cases he presented, and it's pretty obvious that profiling is not an exact science. There are similar features to his presentation of the BTK case, which was also unsolved at the time.

It's no secret that federal agencies are waging a broad global war against terror. But, for the first time, in this memoir, an active Muslim American federal agent reveals his experience infiltrating and bringing down a terror cell in North America.

    Fascinating
Thank you for putting your life on the line to keep us ALL safe!
Well-written in that I could picture the interactions as they were being described. Fascinating and unnerving at the same time.
    Incredible
The best book Ive read. The narration of this book is incredible and make you feel like youre actually part of the conversation. The downside to this book is Tamer can never share who he really is. I would love to spend a little bit of time talking to him. I hope this book becomes a movie. There is no doubt in my mind it will be a hit. Anyone who has kept themselves abreast of radical Islam and terrorist organizations will recognize key names in the network. I praise agent El Nourey and hope his life is long and happy.
    Absolute wonderful story.
Very well written, excellent story and I loved every minute. The narrator is excellent, perfectly fits the book.
    Excellent performance! Relevant & truthful.
Loved it. Couldn't stop listening at times. Fastest I've listened to a book since starting audible. I believe it can resonates across nationality, race, and religious lines.
Great! Gave me a new perspective and understanding
This story was well written, performed well and gave me a much better understanding of the difference between the believers of Islam and the radical Islamists. This story puts you inside the minds of both. I have a greater respect for the true Islamists and an even greater disrespect for the radicals. Thank you "Tamer" for writing this and sharing the story with us. Thank you for your service to our country and the world. Thank you to the many others that worked with Tamer to accomplish the noble and brave work it takes to bring down terrorists.

    Publisher's Summary:
The best-selling author of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes expands our sense of what it means to treat the dead with "dignity".
Fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty set out to discover how other cultures care for their dead. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. Grandpa's mummy has lived in the family home for two years, where the family has maintained a warm and respectful relationship. She meets Bolivian natitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls) and introduces us to a Japanese kotsuage, in which relatives use chopsticks to pluck their loved ones' bones from cremation ashes.
With curiosity and morbid humor, Doughty encounters vividly decomposed bodies and participates in compelling, powerful death practices almost entirely unknown in America. From Here to Eternity introduces death-care innovators researching green burial and body composting, explores new spaces for mourning - including a glowing Buddha columbarium in Japan and America's only open-air pyre - and reveals unexpected new possibilities for our own death rituals.

    Caitlin has done it again
This book is a fascinating look at the ways death is handled in various cultures and communities. And it is a look at how our Western approach has fallen short, and needs to change.
Caitlin has a wry voice and an amazing perspective.
    Eye opening and inspiring!
A wonderful insider look to death, ritual, and coming to an understanding of our eventual end. I loved the different looks on going through grief by ritual and community and has helped me not only fear death less but also plan my own passing and made that ok.
    The Perfect Death-tober Read
Caitlin nailed. Killed it? However you want to say it, she wrote and read an amazing book. Humor, beauty, catharsis, it's all in here.
Amazing Round the World Deathling View Point
That was so intimate and enthralling. Wow, just wow!! You did it again Caitlin. Brilliant
    A book everyone should read.
I think this is an important book for people to read.
I also think that this book, her first book, and her YouTube channel are awesome, because its so cool to see someone so unapologetically geek out over something theyre passionate about especially, in this case, because this is something most people shy away from.

    Publisher's Summary:
Joining the ranks of Hidden Figures and In the Garden of Beasts, the incredible true story of the greatest codebreaking duo that ever lived, an American woman and her husband who invented the modern science of cryptology together and used it to confront the evils of their time, solving puzzles that unmasked Nazi spies and helped win World War II.
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.
In The Woman Who Smashed Codes, Jason Fagone chronicles the life of this extraordinary woman, who played an integral role in our nation's history for 40 years. After World War I, Smith used her talents to catch gangsters and smugglers during Prohibition, then accepted a covert mission to discover and expose Nazi spy rings that were spreading like wildfire across South America, advancing ever closer to the United States. As World War II raged, Elizabeth fought a highly classified battle of wits against Hitler's Reich, cracking multiple versions of the Enigma machine used by German spies. Meanwhile, inside an army vault in Washington, William worked furiously to break Purple, the Japanese version of Enigma - and eventually succeeded, at a terrible cost to his personal life.
Fagone unveils America's code-breaking history through the prism of Smith's life, bringing into focus the unforgettable events and colorful personalities that would help shape modern intelligence. Blending the lively pace and compelling detail that are the hallmarks of Erik Larson's best sellers with the atmosphere and intensity of The Imitation Game, The Woman Who Smashed Codes is riveting popular history at its finest.

    Intriguing title and phenomenal woman!
The description said the book might be compared with "Hidden Figures" and "In the Garden of Beasts" or even the "Imitation Game", but that may be an understatement for what this book does for shedding light on the life and work of Elizabeth Smith Friedman. Her work has gone unnoticed because of her husband's work and hidden under the guise of national security. The pdf that is available with the audible book is helpful. The book kept my interest and still left me wanting to know more. This is a dynamite book! This book might be a good book to recommend for students to read. This book will be on my list of books that I listen to multiple times. Many thanks to the author.
    Personal Bio VS World History
This book is a perfect example of how much of history is made up of people toiling away in back offices without fanfare or recognition.

    Typical Kenda! Veryv
As a long standing fan of his TV show I bought both the Kindle book and the Audible Book. This is Kenda at his best. Several of his stories i recognized the TV episode. Many of his stories i recognized them from news coverage. I live in Denver area and so many made the local news here. I must admit that I have a school girl crush on the actor who portrays him in the TV series. Would like to read more about his private life and his wife, Kathy. She obviously spent a lot of time waiting for him to come home each day. Kenda is definitely one of a kind and a dedicated law enforcement officer. He solved more than he didn't. A cop"s cop. If you are a fan of his series you'll love this book. I'm very pleased that he has narrated the book himself.
    A GREAT LISTEN - OUTSTANDING!
I am a lover of true crime books. I WILL FIND YOU gives the listener a very rare intimacy with the author. This is one of my favorite true crime books I have in my library. It was impossible for me to put it down.
I have never watched the television show or heard of Joe Kenda before this listen. (No media influence here) Kenda is not only an excellent story teller, but a fun humorist. If I had the chance to meet an author in this genre, Mr. Kenda would be at the top of my list. If you want to know more about the horrifying human condition including the strange hard to believe behaviors people are capable of DOWNLOAD THIS BOOK NOW! It is not for listeners that have queasy stomachs...very gory at times, but also extremely funny. For those that have a strange sense of humor and a love for true crime stories, this book is for you. I loved it! Steve
    Worth the listen!
Ibought both the hardcover and the audio book. I wasn't given anything by the publisher or anyone else to write this review nor a discount of any kind. I hate those reviews because I always felt it skewed the ratings.

    Publisher's Summary:
Remember when presidents spoke in complete sentences instead of in unhinged tweets? David Litt does. In his comic coming-of-age memoir, he takes us back to the Obama years - and charts a path forward in the age of Trump.
More than any other presidency, Barack Obama's eight years in the White House were defined by young people - 20-somethings who didn't have much experience in politics (or anything else, for that matter) yet suddenly found themselves in the most high-stakes office building on earth. David Litt was one of those 20-somethings. After graduating from college in 2008, he went straight to the Obama campaign. In 2011 he became one of the youngest White House speechwriters in history. Until leaving the White House in 2016, he wrote on topics from health care to climate change to criminal justice reform. As President Obama's go-to comedy writer, he also took the lead on the White House Correspondents' Dinner, the so-called "State of the Union of jokes".
Now, in this refreshingly honest memoir, Litt brings us inside Obamaworld. With a humorist's eye for detail, he describes what it's like to accidentally trigger an international incident or nearly set a president's hair aflame. He answers questions you never knew you had: Which White House men's room is the classiest? What do you do when the commander in chief gets your name wrong? Where should you never, under any circumstances, change clothes on Air Force One? With nearly a decade of stories to tell, Litt makes clear that politics is completely, hopelessly absurd.
But it's also important. For all the moments of chaos, frustration, and, yes, disillusionment, Litt remains a believer in the words that first drew him to the Obama campaign: "People who love this country can change it". In telling his own story, Litt sheds fresh light on his former boss' legacy. And he argues that, despite the current political climate, the politics championed by Barack Obama will outlive the presidency of Donald Trump.
Full of hilarious stories and told in a truly original voice, Thanks, Obama is an exciting debut about what it means - personally, professionally, and politically - to grow up.

    New favorite non-fiction audiobook
This is wonderful. David Litt does an incredible job of providing interesting commentary and unique anecdotes all wrapped up in a flawless narration.
I laughed, I cried, and I felt a little more "hopey changey" than I have in a while.
    A Refreshingly Irreverent Political Memoir
Political memoirs tend to be drab, plodding, and full of posturing. Whether or not you have fond memories of the Obama Administration, a view inside the machine is compelling. Politics can be cynical and political operatives are too often malicious. This is why I enjoyed peeking into this millennials journey from young skeptic to zealot to insider. Any political movement, from Occupy to Obamamania to the Tea Party to Trumpism, gains momentum on the backs of believers who break the political inertia holding back some or the feeling of disenfranchisement felt by others whose political leanings have been formed by the collapse of hope due to the immense weight of lofty unmet expectations. This book gives a glimpse into the ebbs and flows of the Obama era.
    This isnt hero worship.
