    Title: My Fair Junkie
Subtitle: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Staying Clean
    Author: Amy Dresner
    Narrator: Amy Dresner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 58 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-17
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 95 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In the tradition of Blackout and Permanent Midnight, a darkly funny and revealing debut memoir of one woman's 20-year battle with sex, drugs, and alcohol addiction, and what happens when she finally emerges on the other side.
Growing up in Beverly Hills, Amy Dresner had it all: a top-notch private school education, the most expensive summer camps, and even a weekly clothing allowance. But at 24, she started dabbling in meth in San Francisco and unleashed a fiendish addiction monster. Soon, if you could snort it, smoke it, or have sex with, she did.
Smart and charming, with Daddy's money to fall back on, she sort of managed to keep it all together. But on Christmas Eve 2011, all of that changed when, high on Oxycontin, she stupidly "brandished" a bread knife on her husband and was promptly arrested for "felony domestic violence with a deadly weapon".
Within months, she found herself in the psych ward - and then penniless, divorced, and looking at 240 hours of court-ordered community service. For two years, assigned to a Hollywood Boulevard "chain gang", she swept up syringes (and worse) as she bounced from rehabs to halfway houses, all while struggling with sobriety, sex addiction, and starting over in her 40s.
In the tradition of Orange Is the New Black and Jerry Stahl's Permanent Midnight, Amy Dresner's My Fair Junkie is an insightful, darkly funny, and shamelessly honest memoir of one woman's battle with all forms of addiction, hitting rock bottom, and forging a path to a life worth living.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like Carrie Fisher's 1987 autobiographical novel,
Postcards from the Edge, and Mary Karr's 2009 memoir,
Lit, Amy Dresner's story of addiction and recovery,
My Fair Junkie: A Memoir of Getting Dirty and Stay Clean (Hachette Books), is one for the ages." (
    Elle)
"Effortlessly candid and wryly written chronicle of a life hijacked by drugs, booze, and bad behavior. As a noted West Hollywood stand-up comedian and addiction journalist, she handles this complex tale with wit.... A hard-knocks addiction memoir buoyed with humor and insight." (
    Kirkus)

    Terrible
I've read all the junkie highlight books and this is not one of them. Nothing cool, nothing enlightening just the memoir of a self hating drug abuser.
    great book!!!
this is a fantastic book. it is a moving story that never gets bogged down. from start to finish it is a page Turner.
    Amazing
The overall honesty in this book is amazing! I love how accountable she is and open! Such a great book and so awesome she narrated it.
    Great read.
I listened to this book in less than a week, and I liked it a lot. Amy is charismatic and entertaining, and she also did a great job narrating (her voice reminds me Laura Prepon). Im fascinated by drug addiction and I love female hot-mess biographies, and this is a good one.
    Loved this
Although this is a shocking and sad story at times I laughed out loud so many times. The author is so irreverent but so honest about her addiction and her life. Not sure it's for everyone but I loved it.

    Title: Adventures in My Youth
Subtitle: A German Soldier on the Eastern Front 1941-45
    Author: Armin Scheiderbauer
    Narrator: James A. Gillies
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 27 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-17
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 43 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
The author could be described as a veteran in every sense of the word, even though he was only age 21 when the war ended. Armin Scheiderbauer served as an infantry officer with the 252nd Infantry Division, German army, and saw four years of bitter combat on the Eastern Front, being wounded six times.
This is an outstanding personal memoir, written with great thoughtfulness and honesty. Scheiderbauer joined his unit during the winter of 1941-42 and, during the following years, saw fierce combat in many of the largest battles on the Eastern Front. His experiences of the 1943-45 period are particularly noteworthy, including his recollections of the massive Soviet offensives of summer 1944 and January 1945. Participating in the bitter battles in East Prussia, he was captured by the Soviets and not released until 1947.
Adventures in My Youth is a unique memoir - the author originally wrote it only for his daughter. It has never been published in any language until now.

    Fantastic
Best ww2 autobiography Ive listened to. And Ive read/listened to a lot! Very recommended.
    Heartfelt, vivid and sober story
An absolute pleasure, quite eloquently written and performed. Other biographies can learn much from this one.
Compelling story of a pious youth brought up by war. Starkly vivid view of the life in and around the frontline, from the perspective of a junior infantry officer. Subject of crimes was directly dwelled upon at great length, perhaps by the nature of very active frontline career. My impression is that the author was honest throughout, especially considering the fact that this manuscript was not intended to be published.
A View of the German - Soviet Russia War
Detailed report of the experience of young German infantry officer fighting against the Russians and being a POW.
    Unique view of the war
World wRitten two in the east is incredible and those who f ought there dealt with truly brutal conditions and combat. Not that it's different but the scale was clearly magnitudes bigger than any other war in human history. This book captures person story and story of t he eastern front.
    A disjointed story.
It was a bit of a struggle to finish it as the storyline felt somewhat disjointed. There seemed to be a lot of editing going on here from the author. It did not feel like a warts and all revelation of the life of a soldier on the Eastern front. Rather it seemed like a very self censored and selectively sanitised recollection.

A remarkably bold and inspiring story of crime, motherhood, and redemption - not since Cupcake Brown's A Piece of Cake has there been a memoir this unforgettable.
You want to know about the struggle of growing up poor, black, and female? Ask any girl from any 'hood. You want to know what it takes to rise above your circumstances when all the cards are stacked against you? Ask me.
Comedian Patricia Williams, who, for years, went by her street name, Rabbit, was born and raised in Atlanta's most troubled neighborhood at the height of the crack epidemic.
One of five children, Pat watched as her alcoholic mother struggled to get by on charity, cons, and petty crimes. At age seven, Pat was taught to roll drunks for money. At 12, she was targeted for sex by a man eight years her senior; by 13, she was pregnant. By 15, Pat was a mother of two.
Alone at 16, Pat was determined to make a better life for her children. But with no job skills and an eighth-grade education, her options were limited. She learned quickly that hustling and humor were the only tools she had to survive.
Rabbit is an unflinching memoir of cinematic scope and unexpected humor that offers a rare glimpse into the harrowing reality of life on America's margins - a powerful true story of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of love.

    Any additional comments?
This was the realist book I've listened to so far!!!!
Thank you Ms.Pat for sharing your story!!!
    So so so good!!!
I laughed, I cried, then laughed some more.... I admire Ms. Pat a great deal, what an amazing story.
    Amazing story but dry reading
I have listened to several books by comedians, and loved them better than reading because the comedian would add flavor and rhythm. I was looking forward to hearing her read the book in the animated and laughing way she talks live. Unfortunately, that isnt the case. She read it very dry and monotone. Never broke away once from the script to add anything. No laughter. Adam Carrolas In 50 years we will all be chicks is what I am comparing this too. Overall the story was entertaining and I found myself trying to listen at any opportunity.
    Excellent
This book kept my attention all the way through. Very inspiring and very thought provoking. Love it

    Title: Assata
Author: Assata Shakur, Angela Davis - foreword
    Narrator: Sirena Riley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 18 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 07-04-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 164 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted terrorist list.
Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign to criminalise and suppress black nationalist organisations.
This intensely personal and political autobiography reveals a sensitive and gifted woman, far from the fearsome image of her that is projected by the powers that be. With wit and candor, Assata recounts the formative experiences that led her to embrace a life of activism. With pained awareness she portrays the strengths, weaknesses and eventual demise of black and white revolutionary groups at the hands of the state.
A major contribution to the history of black liberation, destined to take its place alongside The Autobiography of Malcolm X and the works of Maya Angelou. Foreword written by Angela Davis.

  • Hunger Audiobook by Roxane Gay

    Title: Hunger
Subtitle: A Memoir of (My) Body
    Author: Roxane Gay
    Narrator: Roxane Gay
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 5 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-13-17
    Publisher: Harper Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 1999 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From the New York Times best-selling author of Bad Feminist, a searingly honest memoir of food, weight, self-image, and learning how to feed your hunger while taking care of yourself.
"I ate and ate and ate in the hopes that if I made myself big, my body would be safe. I buried the girl I was because she ran into all kinds of trouble. I tried to erase every memory of her, but she is still there, somewhere.... I was trapped in my body, one that I barely recognized or understood, but at least I was safe."
In her phenomenally popular essays and long-running Tumblr blog, Roxane Gay has written with intimacy and sensitivity about food and body, using her own emotional and psychological struggles as a means of exploring our shared anxieties over pleasure, consumption, appearance, and health. As a woman who describes her own body as "wildly undisciplined", Roxane understands the tension between desire and denial, between self-comfort and self-care. In Hunger, she explores her past - including the devastating act of violence that acted as a turning point in her young life - and brings listeners along on her journey to understand and ultimately save herself.
With the bracing candor, vulnerability, and power that have made her one of the most admired writers of her generation, Roxane explores what it means to learn to take care of yourself: how to feed your hungers for delicious and satisfying food, a smaller and safer body, and a body that can love and be loved - in a time when the bigger you are, the smaller your world becomes.
    Critic Reviews:
"There's no better person to narrate this audio than Roxane Gay herself. Her calm, consistent inflections are juxtaposed with the content of the audiobook.... Her narration is filled with careful intentions - as if every single word stated and not stated explains her existence spatially.... Most of all, her story is felt because content and narration explore the concept of un/control of the body, self, and existence through her voice." (

    Dark, thought provoking, sometimes frustrating
Would you consider the audio edition of Hunger to be better than the print version?
I never know what to do with this question...people tend to read OR listen to a text, but rarely encounter both the print and audio versions. That said, Gay's performance probably adds quite a bit to the experience, so I am giving the audio version the edge here.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Hunger?
I was often struck by how difficult it is -- practically speaking -- for a person of size to simply go through the world. Roxane Gay details her struggles with flying on airplanes, sitting in certain kinds of chairs, and finding clothing she likes. These are things I understood before reading her book, but presented as a daily lived struggle, I found a new sense of empathy and compassion for people of size.
What about Roxane Gays performance did you like?
She has a lovely voice. It is well-modulated and soothing. That said, there is very little (perhaps zero?) humor in this book. This is understandable, as the subject matter is dark and personal, but it would have been nice to have a few small moments of levity, if only to introduce another dimension to her speaking voice.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not particularly. The book feels less shocking or revelatory than it does meditative.

    Publisher's Summary:
An exquisite memoir about how to liveand loveevery day with death in the room, from poet Nina Riggs, mother of two young sons and the direct descendant of Ralph Waldo Emerson, in the tradition of When Breath Becomes Air.
We are breathless, but we love the days. They are promises. They are the only way to walk from one night to the other.
Nina Riggs was just thirty-seven years old when initially diagnosed with breast cancerone small spot. Within a year, the mother of two sons, ages seven and nine, and married sixteen years to her best friend, received the devastating news that her cancer was terminal.
How does one live each day, unattached to outcome? How does one approach the moments, big and small, with both love and honesty?
Exploring motherhood, marriage, friendship, and memory, even as she wrestles with the legacy of her great-great-great grandfather, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Nina Riggss breathtaking memoir continues the urgent conversation that Paul Kalanithi began in his gorgeous When Breath Becomes Air. She asks, what makes a meaningful life when one has limited time?
Brilliantly written, disarmingly funny, and deeply moving, The Bright Hour is about how to love all the days, even the bad ones, and its about the way literature, especially Emerson, and Ninas other muse, Montaigne, can be a bomb and a form of prayer. Its a book about looking death squarely in the face and saying this is what will be.
Especially poignant in these uncertain times, The Bright Hour urges us to live well and not lose sight of what makes us human: love, art, music, words. Stunningheartrendingthis years When Breath Becomes Air. Nora Krug, The Washington Post

Awe inspiring legacy of A Brave Young Woman.
Nina Riggs was an intelligent woman who was living her life just the way that we all do, one day at a time. This was one 'smart cookie' who managed to juggle her family, friends and career. However at no time does she try to kid us that she was even close to perfect. It is more than apparent that she is blessed with an exceptional sense of humor and as you dig deeper into her book. Through the last two years of her life she really needed that sense of humor.
It will make you smile, perhaps giggle. In fact I laughed out loud at a couple of Nina's observations. Sadly I am sure that much of her suffering will make you cry. On the upside I think that it will also make you grateful for what you have.
Beautifully and compassionately narrated by Cassandra Campbell and Kirby Heyborne.
I am so grateful to the Riggs family for publishing this after Nina's passing as I really feel that it is Nina's gift to the world and needed to be heard.
    Bright Memoir
Like Kalanithi's When Breath Becomes Air, Gawande's Being Mortal, and Nuland's How We Die this is a must read for everyone who is interested in life and death. Nina faces her journey without self-pity determined to love the bad days not just the good.

For nearly four decades, David Sedaris has faithfully kept a diary in which he records his thoughts and observations on the odd and funny events he witnesses. Anyone who has attended a live Sedaris event knows that his diary readings are often among the most joyful parts of the evening. But never before have they been available in print. Now, in Theft by Finding, Sedaris brings us his favorite entries. From deeply poignant to laugh-out-loud funny, these selections reveal with new intimacy a man longtime fans only think they know. Tender, hilarious, illuminating, and endlessly captivating, Theft by Finding offers a rare look into the mind of one of our generation's greatest comic geniuses.
    Critic Reviews:
"Only David Sedaris should narrate books by David Sedaris. He's simply wonderful.... With his inimitable sweetly sarcastic delivery, he precisely records encounters with anti-gay thugs and gay perverts and recounts examples of the ignorant sexist, racist, and vicious comments he experiences. Everyone who listens to these diary entries, beginning in 1977 and going through 2002, will be satisfied, but waiting eagerly for more, narrated by Sedaris, of course." (
    AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
    A softer, sweeter Sedaris
Having grown up with super snarky David Sedaris, this is a much gentler version of the guy we love so much. I guess because it's David as a person rather than David as a writer, everything seems to have a smoother edge. Yes, the funny is still there, but the tender and sadder part of him is just more so knowing that he lived through all of this and came out on the other side as a sophisticated artist born from a picked-upon kid. It's fascinating to see how he records the racism (they ASSUME he's a racist) homophobia (they KNOW he's one) and anti-semitism (they aren't sure IF he's one) that is overt and part of his day to day life.
Now, don't get me wrong, he still often doesn't take prisoners, but knowing that comes from some real poverty, drug fueled concerns, and a desperate need to finally grow up makes following this time of his life often uncomfortable but ultimately deeply satisfying. And, as always, listening to him deliver this is just perfect. Can hardly wait for 2003 to whenever.
    Brilliant!
This book! These stories are so honest and the perfectly timed narration by David Sedaris. This collection is like watching the young voice develop and struggle into the person none of us can get enough of. This book is him at his very best and it just keeps getting better and better!
    Don't hate me but...
I love David Sedaris so much that criticizing him is tantamount to sacrilege for me but I was not that entertained by this book. I did have a chuckle or two in the latter part of the book but for me it didn't get remotely interesting until about chapter 25. Hearing so many mundane diary entries about things like the price of chicken per pound on sale that day were mind-numbing.

    Release date: 05-02-17
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 269 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
From Patricia Lockwood - a writer acclaimed for her wildly original voice - a vivid, heartbreakingly funny memoir about having a married Catholic priest for a father.
Father Greg Lockwood is unlike any Catholic priest you have ever met - a man who lounges in boxer shorts, who loves action movies, and whose constant jamming on the guitar reverberates "like a whole band dying in a plane crash in 1972". His daughter is an irreverent poet who long ago left the church's country. When an unexpected crisis leads her and her husband to move back into her parents' rectory, their two worlds collide.
In Priestdaddy, Lockwood interweaves emblematic moments from her childhood and adolescence - from an ill-fated family hunting trip and an abortion clinic sit-in where her father was arrested to her involvement in a cultlike Catholic youth group - with scenes that chronicle the eight-month adventure she and her husband had in her parents' household after a decade of living on their own. Lockwood details her education of a seminarian who is also living at the rectory, tries to explain Catholicism to her husband, who is mystified by its bloodthirstiness and arcane laws, and encounters a mysterious substance on a hotel bed with her mother.
Lockwood pivots from the raunchy to the sublime, from the comic to the deeply serious, exploring issues of belief, belonging, and personhood. Priestdaddy is an entertaining, unforgettable portrait of a deeply odd religious upbringing and how one balances a hard-won identity with the weight of family and tradition.
    Critic Reviews:
"Patricia Lockwood's side-splitting Priestdaddy puts the poetry back in memoir. Her verbal verve creates a reading experience of effervescent joy, even as Lockwood takes you through some of her life's darker passages. Destined to be a classic, Priestdaddy is this year's must-read memoir." (Mary Karr, author of The Liars' Club)
"Beautiful, funny and poignant. I wish I'd written this book." (Jenny Lawson, author of Furiously Happy)
"Priestdaddy is a revelatory debut, a meditation on family and art that finds poetry in the unlikeliest things, including poetry. Patricia Lockwood's prose is nothing short of ecstatic; every sentence hums with vibrant, anarchic delight, and her portrait of her epically eccentric family life is funny, warm, and stuffed to bursting with emotional insight. If I could write like this, I would." (Joss Whedon)
    Members Reviews:
    Holy Smutty Metaphors!
Lockwood is a new author to me. If I was hip, I'd have heard of Lockwood prior to buying this starred darling. I'd have known that the NY Times has crowned Lockwood the "smutty-metaphor queen." She has a big Twitter following and is the author of a book of poetry, "Motherland Fatherland Homelandsexuals." Lockwood is also a boundary pushing comic with an acerbic wit and a long windup into a delivery that packs a punch to your thinking process.
Lockwood as an author is a fantastic writer with a keen sense of observation. Her stories in this memoir are skillfully told with heart; her narrative smoothly slips from quirky hilarity into depths of sincere revelation. Daddy was a former Lutheran minister, married with children when he is compelled to convert to Catholicism.
