    Publisher's Summary:
The United States prides itself on being the worlds melting pot, but during a long, hot summer in coastal North Carolina, three young people will put that theory to the test. A German named Tillmann is vacationing in the States with his girlfriend and corresponding with an African American colleague about the evolution of blues music.
Over the course of the season, the trios discussions range from Mariah Carey to Ronald Reagan, from the Black Power movement to Nazi Germany. And as a hurricane churns across the Atlantic, their exploration of how ethnicity, race, and gender are defined particularly for Americas African and Jewish diasporas will culminate in revelations about their own ethnic identities.
Thomas Meineckes groundbreaking writing style is on full display in Pale Blue, as the writer-DJ has crafted his insightful novel with the same uncanny skill with which jazz and blues musicians create their improvisational styles.

    Pale Blue: Color me confused...
Reading Thomas Meinecke's novelPale Bluewas more of an experience than reading a novel, and that's not necessarily a good thing. It's a subjective thing, but some literary experiences are enlightening; some are not.
It's difficult to even write a rational review much less a synopsis for this one, as the book itself isn't very coherent, at least for this reader. Three times I've discarded my notes for this title as I struggled my way to get through it, thinking that perhaps I had lost some brain cells along the way, trying to make sense of it. I lost in that respect, but did manage to make my way through the book.
We meet Tillman, said to be a German vacationing in the U.S. while on a work visa. There's Yolanda, a German expatriate who works at an organization in Chicago. We also have Cordula, a woman who's a diving instructor and student in Berlin, and who happens to have been born a Black German. Their conversations take place via their phone calls, supplemented by regular mail and email. By the end of the third page we find Tillman in a public phone booth facing a tropical storm headed for the coast of New Bern, NC.
But by that third page we've also read Tillman going off about his Korean transistor radio warning people to drop to the floor as the weather danger approaches, then shifts back to music by Mariah Carey, as he goes back to his work, copying a report about a Congolese man who was bound and gagged in an airliner as he resists deportation. During this he notices that his fingernails are too long, and then he drives to that phone booth to call Yolanda, leaving a message about an article that he found in an Israeli newspaper about the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest, a music group described as German Turkish (or vice versa), and asking her what color is Mariah Carey.
All of this takes place by the end of the third page, while a tropical storm is headed for the North Carolina coast. And on the fourth page we find our narrator reading that Queen Elizabeth has African ancestors, and there's a lengthy discourse on this topic. It ends with the narrator getting off of a Chicago bus and listening to Tillman's message asking about Mariah Carey's skin color.
Disjointed? Yes it is, and that's what we find as we go on, page after page, trying to figure out who is saying what to whom, and why. There are three narrators here, and it often takes that many times reading each paragraph to figure our what is going on here.

For Penelope, wife of Odysseus, maintaining a kingdom while her husband was off fighting the Trojan War was not a simple business. And then, when Odysseus finally returns and slaughters the murderous suitors, he brutally hangs Penelope's 12 beloved maids. What were his motives? And what was Penelope really up to?
    Members Reviews:
    Alright I suppose
I didn't really enjoy this one that much. A nice idea but never really developed into anything.
On the general quality of this audiobook however: awful. The woman's voice was irritating enough before they put the horrendous treatment on to turn her into the chorus. That was so uncomfortable to listen to, I tried to skip through whenever "they" were speaking!
    Interesting concept, not enough depth
If you have read the Odyssey and know your mythology there's not a lot more here to engage a reader. The concept of telling the story from a different angle is interesting but could have been expanded more. I didn't really feel any emotion for Penelope, just absorbed her story. having said that, portraying the maids as a Chorus was very clever and the narration very good. Interesting listen.
Short but sweet exploration of Penelope
    Any additional comments?
I thought this was a solid novella, which was both funny and moving. I felt a lot of unexpected sympathy for characters, and felt the narrator, as well as Atwood, really drew on Penelope's negative emotions well, in a way that didn't make her seem whinging or unlikeable.
Tongue and cheek feminist outlook of mythology
This is pretty hilarious. Once again, the master of feminist prose Margaret Atwood has created a modern day version of Penelope from the Greek mythology of Odysseus in which she is no longer alive. She's rather outspoken, feisty and sly attempting to live with her brutish husband while on Earth. At the same time, her hatred for Helen of Troy has seeped into her afterlife as well. I love the ending talking about liposuction and heels. A fun listen.
A retelling of a story that adds new facets.
This is very much a Tragicomedy that more than a novella wants to be a satirical feminist play. For those of us that enjoy the heroic retelling of this stories this will come at first like a cold shower or boiling hot one, but if you stay and continue reading you will see an unmasking of the romanticised cruelties required for our heroes to be so virile and disdainful of others lives and the bitterness that that injects into women's lives no matter what their social status.
The Penelope we encounter in these pages is honest but guarded with her honesty even now that she is just a spirit, she is also bitter and resentful of her times and what was imposed on her, she dislikes to this day Helen for making her life more difficult, but we see she can not escape her tender feeling for Odysseus though she knows him better than most, perhaps she forgives him because he returned. When she looks at our world she still sees it as dangerous and chooses not to reincarnate.
The twelve maids are a chorus that interrupts and interjects their views and represent women in the lower classes and slaves.

    Publisher's Summary:
The thought of him was irresistible, a mystery. It made her feel beautiful. And, while it lasted, it gave her a glimpse of paradise.
A once bustling convent in the south of France is closing, leaving behind three elderly nuns. Forced for the first time to confront the community that she betrayed decades ago, one of those nuns, Sister Bernard, struggles to reconcile her uncertain faith with the passionate, impulsive actions of her youth.
The young Sister Bernard is slow-witted, dreamy, and tormented by the voice of a judgemental God. Only when one of the young Nazi soldiers starts showing her attention is she given a reprieve from Gods voice. Soon she is meeting him in secret and breaking her vow of chastity with disturbing ease. Illicit love leads her into a far worse betrayal, one she fully understands only when it is too late, and a horror that endures in the memories of the villagers in the decades that follow.
With an elegant, devastatingly effective style, this story of one womans forbidden love, uncertain faith, and guilt-ridden past is told in alternating vignettes, bridging her imminent, present-day reckoning with the complex emotions behind her misdeeds of the past.
    Critic Reviews:
An intense and powerful story.... Wartime stories and nuns tales are common enough but Obedience manages to be something different. [It] is a tightly written study of betrayal, faith, loneliness and desire. The coolness and restraint of her prose seems ideally suited to the storys setting and its themes. (New Zealand Herald)
An intensely imagined novel... thought-provoking. (Hilary Mantel, Man Booker Prizewinning author of Wolf Hall)
