"Boredom is dangerous," writes Benjamin Samuel, Co-Editor of Electric Literature, in his introduction to this issue of Recommended Reading. "It can make us lazy, complacent, and if we suffer too much of it we're liable to become boring ourselves. For the whalers at sea in Anu Jindal's Not a Bad Bunch, boredom is far more insidious; according to the ship's surgeon, who narrates the story, it's an early symptom of an infectious and barbarous madness. The crew isn't looking for trouble - they're hunting for whales - but in such close quarters with few distractions, any transgression is cause for revenge."

Welcome to Trace Italian, a game of strategy and survival! You may now make your first move.
Isolated by a disfiguring injury since the age of 17, Sean Phillips crafts imaginary worlds for strangers to play in. From his small apartment in southern California, he orchestrates fantastic adventures where possibilities, both dark and bright, open in the boundaries between the real and the imagined. As the creator of Trace Italian - a text-based, role-playing game played through the mail - Sean guides players from around the world through his intricately imagined terrain, which they navigate and explore, turn by turn, seeking sanctuary in a ravaged, savage future America.
Lance and Carrie are high school students from Florida, explorers of the Trace. But when they take their play into the real world, disaster strikes, and Sean is called to account for it. In the process, he is pulled back through time, tunneling toward the moment of his own self-inflicted departure from the world in which most people live.
Brilliantly constructed, Wolf in White Van unfolds in reverse until we arrive at both the beginning and the climax: the event that has shaped so much of Seans life. Beautifully written and unexpectedly moving, John Darnielles Wolf in White Van is an audacious and gripping debut novel, a marvel of storytelling brio and genuine literary delicacy.

    Powerful, but perhaps not enjoyable
I have a theory about people who didn't "get" this book, but it's a bit spoilery, so I'll save it for the end. If you want to avoid all spoilers, and you want the quick-and-dirty of my opinion, here it is: I cannot recommend this book enough, but there's no neat wrap-up, and by the end of the book, you will have some ugly and uncomfortable feelings stirring.
Wolf in White Van begins with a memory, made up of many memories, of the protagonist's father carrying him up the stairs in the aftermath of a terrible incident. We know from the get-go that something terrible is coming, and it short order, we learn that book is driving us closer to that event.
The formatting can be a bit off-putting. Darnielle writes in long, lyrical sentences, in a style which fans of his music will recognize immediately, but it is somewhat stream-of-consciousness. The narrative meanders around events in a way that will drive some readers absolutely crazy, but which seems (to me) to be skillfully employed stream of consciousness. If that's not your literary bag, and you don't love Darnielle's lyrical style already, you may want to avoid this book.
The story is about Sean, a man who makes a living writing and running by-mail role playing games. A player sends him envelopes and subscription fees, and he sends them a scene to play out. They send him their move, and he sends them the next scene, which explains how their move played out and what their new situation is.
Sean has been disfigured by a particular incident which I won't disclose here, and the book spends much of its time slowly revealing the nature of his injuries and the life he leads as a result. We learn about how he started writing his first, favorite, and most profitable game, Trace Italian.

    Publisher's Summary:
East Texas in the 1960s is not the worst place to have grown up, but for narrator Jake of The Jugheads, it was a minefield. Describing clearly and courageously first jobs and first kisses, family vacations and family fights, Jake takes us through a wild coming-of-age ride, in an ordinary American family that he believes is as violent and dysfunctional as they come. By turns hilarious and moving, The Jugheads is a compelling return to form for a master of the underside of the American psyche.

and am really glad this book has finally been published
My long-awaited copy of "The Jugheads" will arrive from Amazon any day now, but -- through a friend of the author -- I had a chance to read the original manuscript a while back. I've been thinking about it ever since, and am really glad this book has finally been published. It tells the thoroughly All-American, yet darkly subversive tale of a young man growing up in Texas, that most iconically American state. There, J.R. Helton rips the smiling Happy Face off the suburban American Dream to reveal the reality therein, and it's not a pretty sight. It is a very entertaining drama, however, in which Helton spares no one -- least of all himself -- in telling the ugly truth behind so many of the self-serving, onanistic cultural myths that shimmer like quicksilver on the road ahead.
It's a road we all drive, and as society we've put the pedal to the metal trying to catch up with those mirages, but it can't be done -- they dance forever beyond our grasp on the Highway to Nowhere. We do learn a thing or two on that futile quest, though, even if those hard lessons serve only to underline just what fools we've been.
"The Jugheads" is one harrowing, painful, but darkly funny ride, and well worth your time. Take a deep breath before you read itâ but read it.

Heartbreaking and funny. Protagonist Jake Stewart shares a stark story of survival in a home dominated by a relentlessly dysfunctional father. If you grew up in Texas in the 70s, you'll recognize the people and places and ethos of the time. If you didn't, Helton puts you right there. Absolutely loved every page of this book.
    Jugheads
If you read "Drugs", this story is the coming of age story of Jake, its main character. Admittedly, a hard read at times as you see how a father repeatedly imposes his mania on a family as he tries, and often fails, to do what he believes is right. As a teacher I winched reading the first few pages of the book. I know that many of my students come from similar, painful home situations. The beginning reads like a movie, flashing from scene to scene. Keep reading. The book will pull you in.
I'm not sure what order to recommend that you read first ... Drugs is Jake as an adult and The Jugheads him as a child and teenager. Read them both.
    Masterful storytelling, biting cultural critique
As in Drugs, J.R. Helton again balances masterful storytelling with biting cultural critique. The Jugheadsâboth excruciating and darkly funnyâfollows Jake Stewart (of Drugs) as he grows from boyhood to manhood in a household dominated by a narcissistic, pathologically controlling father.

Sie behauptete, man könne durch ihn in eine andere Welt gelangen. Und was dann geschah, hätte sich eigentlich niemals ereignen dürfen.

    Publisher's Summary:
For more than 30 years, William Adair's faith in life was based on two indisputable principles: the exceptional good looks and athletic talents of his three daughters and the historical status of his family in their Philadelphia suburb. After suffering a stroke, William wakes up in his hospital bed to realize that his world has collapsed: his children are less extraordinary than he had remembered and his family's notable history has been forgotten. William's daughters - all tennis champions in their youth - are in decline. Having lost their father's pride, the three sisters struggle to define themselves. Their mother, whose memory has started to fade, is unable to help them recall the talented girls they used to be.
For three generations, a carriage house has stood on the Adair property. Built by William's grandfather, it was William's childhood refuge and a sign of the family's prominence. Now held captive by a neighbor due to a zoning error, the house has decayed beyond recognition and may even be condemned. Rallying to save their father, Diana, Elizabeth, and Isabelle take on the battle for the carriage house that once stood as a symbol of their place in the world. Overcoming misunderstandings and betrayals both deep in the past and painfully new, each of the Adairs ultimately finds a place of forgiveness. The Carriage House is a moving, beautifully wrought debut novel about the complex bonds of siblings, about rebuilding lost lives, and about the saving grace of love.

"Where do these parts of our children fly off to?"
William sits watching his three daughters Elizabeth, Diana, and Izzy and despairs of the women they had become. He longs for the fierce girls eating up the Tennis courts with ferocity and flare. William in fact is my least favorite character in this book. While I understand his late life musings of dreams lost and found, I was repelled by several scenes in which he internally or verbally castigates his daughters for their lacks. Even his flashes of love for them do not really make up for his pettiness.
I liked the daughters. And I liked the way the book is written with chapters exploring the internal dialogues of various characters. It is true, as one neighbor intuites, that they cling almost sullenly to disappointment and failure. And these moments of self pity are not their finest. But I think the writing fleshes them out to a more dimensional presentation. Of the three, Diane's struggle to reclaim the parts of herself she thinks lost is the most compelling to me.
I liked the story overall, and I kind of got sucked into the drama of saving the carriage house now bereft and derelict. The plot drew me in and I found the writing to have moments of intense insight. The book is entertaining and I found myself thinking over some of the life choices of the characters between readings; I like that quality in a book.
Lovely and achingly good. Hooked by the end of the first sentence of chapter 2
This book is well worth the read. It is a grand novel about a family in distress. Their journey is wonderful. Modern day Austen.
    DISAPPOINTED AFTER THE GOOD REVIEWS
A bit fragmented and not easy to get wound up in the story. Haven't finished it yet and not sure that I will. Didn't actually warm to the characters.

Found this book very slow and did not enjoy it.

Sweet story for middle school girls
Penny is a young Mennonite girl sent to summer camp for a week by her parents. She's convinced her friend Gina to come along with her and it's a huge surprise for them both. No swimming, not even baths, showers, or water to wash clothes. As they deal with the boredom of a religious camp circa 1980; Gina is faced with raging hormones and Penny with the memories of her last day in Guatemala. This story is a sweet look at the a slice of a young girl's life as she tries to deal with culture shock, her memories, and the pain of becoming an adult.
    Beautiful Story, Unfortunate Spanish Pronunciation
Would you consider the audio edition of Small Country to be better than the print version?
The only reason the audio edition is not better than the print version is because the narrator's pronunciation of Spanish is horrible! If the listener has never taken an introductory Spanish course, the listener will not detect anything is wrong. However, anyone with even a basic level of Spanish proficiency will not only cringe, but find the pronunciation unintelligible. When Penny, the protagonist, encounters Lucas, a fellow M.K. (missionary kid) from Honduras, they engage in a casual conversation about Guatemala, Honduras, and the common aspects of Central America they know and share. In the written story, this is a a wonderful moment for Penny, who is trying to navigate unfamiliar territory -- US culture, her rural and conservative Mennonite heritage, and adolescent sexual expression. Unfortunately, the Spanish is so poorly pronounced by the voice artist that I couldn't understand the Spanish being used. When the narrator then provides the English translation I was amazed at how the words were butchered. What the reader of Small Country identifies as a moment of hope for Penny in the written story, becomes, for the Spanish proficient listener, an extremely awkward, cringe-worthy sequence of events. What would have just been a misfortune early in the story when the Spanish is used in casual conversation, absolutely destroys the climax of the story. King beautifully weaves two dramatic climaxes together, a real-time event prompting a vivid flashback. Unfortunately for the Spanish-proficient listener, the incredible climactic build is dashed by Holloway's unfortunate mispronunciation of "señor" (saynyor) spoken by a Guatemalan character as "senior" (SEEnyor). The recording is painful. If you haven't guessed by now. This audiobook needs to be re-recorded. The current narration does not do justice to the storyline.
What did you like best about this story?
King has created a story that is as vibrant and complex as a Guatemalan huipil.

Jake Whyte is the sole resident of an old farmhouse on an unnamed British island, a place of ceaseless rains and battering winds. Its just her, her untamed companion, Dog, and a flock of sheep. Which is how she wanted it to be. But something is coming for the sheep every few nights it picks one off, leaves it in rags.
It could be anything. There are foxes in the woods, a strange boy and a strange man, rumours of an obscure, formidable beast. And there is Jakes unknown past, perhaps breaking into the present, a story hidden thousands of miles away and years ago, in a landscape of different colour and sound, a story held in the scars that stripe her back.

    Annoyingly incomplete and woeful accents!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I'm afraid this audiobook was ruined for me by the unbelievably bad British accents of the reader. They wavered from vaguely Scottish to Irish, to Yorkshire, to Welsh, to Indian! I just couldn't take it seriously - and as for the imitations of birdsong - I know it's a tall order, and I doubt if I could do them either - but I was in stitches!
Would you recommend All the Birds, Singing to your friends? Why or why not?
No - I found it annoying that the book ended with me having an incomplete picture of the entire story.
Would you be willing to try another one of Caroline Lees performances?
Only if she sticks to her own accent!
One of my favorite books from the past few years
What did you like best about this story?
The settings are so real, so beautiful and capture the character's struggle brilliantly. The narrator was great, I wasn't sure about the British parts at first but I decided that it added to the ambiguity of the location and went with it. Having loved the book when reading it myself I was more than happy with the narration.
Have you listened to any of Caroline Lees other performances? How does this one compare?
I have not but I will be looking out for her in the future!!
Great story worst accents ever heard
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
No definitely not.I would tell them to read it or listen to a different version as it is spoilt by the narration. The story is well written and enjoyable.
What was one of the most memorable moments of All the Birds, Singing?
Sadly the terrible attempts at accents will be the most memorable.Otherwise poor Lloyd digging the hole.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
She absolutely ruined the book for me!!!!The narration in her own accent was fine but when she attempted a " British" accent it was absolutely awful. The policeman on the island could have been in Jamaica, Pakistan, Newcastle, Scotland or Ireland in one sentence!Part of the intrigue of the book was to work out where she could be farming her sheep so remotely in Britain and there was no clue from Caroline Lee.I am a surgeon and would not attempt an operation I couldn't do. What a pity t the narrator doesn't share this view.
