We bought this for my son since his name is Axel. It's a cute little book, flows well, and doesn't grate on your nerves as a parent. Our son, who is 4, has now even learned/memorized the words well enough that he can read the book to us.

Great book for my six year grandson he throughly enjoyed this book.

Seven Year Old Loved It and Wants Rest of Series

Cute book my seven year old brother loved. The illustrations are really vivid and beautiful and the story was entertaining. There are also many other books about this cute little hamster that any child will love.

Really fun book

We first checked this book out from the library, and my boys (ages 2 and 3) couldn't get enough. After renewing the book from the library several times it was clear we should just buy it. I can see them enjoying this book for years.

The words are catchy and engaging ("Great day, grin day, build a car to win day") and the story is uniquely entertaining (A hot rod for a hamster? Who would think it would be so fun?). My boys like to say the words along with me and the race at the end is always greatly anticipated. They also like the "What would you choose?" parts where they can pick what they would want for a hot rod. I don't buy kids books unless I love them (or my kids do and I can tell it's a good book), and this one's a keeper.

Hot Rod Hamster is a HIT with my boy!

My 3 YO son absolutely loves Hot Rod Hamster! We have one other book too; HRH-Monster Truck Mania. They are fun books that engage him with colorful illustrations, and by asking the reader "which would you choose?" His favorite part is choosing!! It's not your typical storybook either. Although there is a story being told, it's not in the traditional sense. Most of it is through dialogue between the characters... think those little bubbles in comics that show what a character is saying or thinking. It really is a fun way to tell a story and kids love it!!

A classic

This book is a classic. The kids love coming up with ideas on how they will decorate the hot rod. They love the hamster. Cynthia is a fabulous author and Derek Anderson has included beautiful illustrations on a book that is of very high quality. Can't wait to see more of these books.

Good books but complex for a 4YO

We bought these for our 4YO,who was progressing quickly through the Bobs books but getting little out of them as they had no story. If you've not used these books before there are some things to note.

These are more complex than other first readers, it's nice t just 3 or 4 letter words, it took my LO a long time to work out how to say favourite

There is word repetition and as an adult, by god it can be annoying

The books are pretty long so don't expect to finish it in one go

That beings said hard work is ok and my son has enjoyed working on these. We have a process of I read a page, then he reads one to boost his confidence

Overall I'm happy with the book but I would like a slightly simpler first reader

Easy read for young readers

This is a great book for new readers. My son, who just started 1st grade, was able to read it in about 3-4 minutes. He only needed help with one word throughout the entire book. The pictures are GREAT. If you have a kid who loves trucks this book is a must-have. There isn't too much of a story line, the book just tells you a lot about what Axel likes to do, but kids like it.

I bought this for my Great Grandaughter, who lives aboaut 1,200 miles away, and we hardly ever see one another. Books are my way of keeping in touch. She is 8 and loves to read.
