GREAT Series....Narrator change from Book 4 on

I wrote Kevin J. Anderson at his blog about the change of narrator in mid series(book 4 and on). I made similar comments to the ones I found here about bad pronunciation of names and do the narrator's ever read the book. To my surprise, he responded the next day, and very much appreciate him taking the time to respond:

The audio publisher changed after book 3 (from Recorded Books to Brilliance); in most cases, Scott Brick or Jim Meskimen have read my books, and I have very close contact with them. For the first three Seven Suns books, I had a long phone conversation with George Guidall to guide him through the pronunciations. For the other Seven Suns books, I sent a pronunciation list, but I did not have any contact with the reader.

Like nails on a chalkboard...

I initially felt like the last reviewer, thinking that this narrator would've probably been acceptable (even given the ridiculous accents) if I hadn't already listened to 60 hours of the previous, excellent narrator, and that I would hopefully get used to him eventually. The different name pronunciations were distracting, but not deal-breakers. UNTIL NOW! I just reached the part of the book where Tasia's compie "EA" comes into the story again. Amazingly, the narrator even manages to mispronounce this two letter name, saying "ee-aah", despite the fact that it states clearly in an earlier book that compies are referred to by the first two letters of their designation, and there are copious examples already mentioned ("U-R", "D-D", etc...

Wow Finally!

the first four were good but i kept waiting for some things to happen ( i dont want to be a spoiler) and wow did they happen. i do like the new narrator we got in the last book i think he ads a bit more drama to books and makes them more enjoyable to listen to. i get to start the next one in the series tonight and i am looking forward to it!!

Great series!

I love this series.

I thought I would've been used to the new narrator by the end of this book but.... nah, It's not merely the pronunciations but the accents as well.

It's bad enough to speak the Compi names in such a screwy manner, it's far worse to make seemingly random decisions about the dialect and therefore the origins of several characters. This narrator Colacci decided, for some reason, that people with names like Nikko Chan Tylar and Kotto Okiah should sound like U.S. southerners and the older roamer men should all sound like grisly characters in a western shoot-em-up. Even the "Alien with British Accent" clich'e finally becomes less than outrageous but really, rednecks in space? Not even genteel southern gentlemen but crusty old gosh-darn dusty pantsed cowpokes? Perhaps a listen through of the earlier books for continuity would've been informative.

Perhaps they should've started from book 1 with the new narrator thus buffering us from the shock of being forced to leave the marvelous George Guidall for this hideous treatment.

sigh.

Recaptured My Interest

This is a long series and I've wanted to make sure and finish it - but I was getting a bit bored by end of 4th book. So it's been about a year and now listening to this book I am much more excited about the series and will jump directly to next book. Tons of action - good flow, narrator is great.

Saga of Great Reads

The Saga of Seven Suns, much to my surprise, produced equal to better books throughout the series. Usually, the 2nd, 3rd and beyond books don't measure up to the original. This series is an exception. Unexpectedly, the Saga of Seven Suns has become my favorite book series, one of my favorite science fiction stories. I really enjoy the narrator. He is consistent and doesn't over-act. Regarding this particular book... just another great read equal or better to the previous book in series.

Back on Track

Very much better than book #4. The narrator has toned it down a bit from the previous extravagant performance.

The plot is growing ever wider. There could be 100's or even 1000's of sequels.

More of a set up book for the rest of the series

This one (in the series) has the feel of a set up for the rest of the books that come after it. On its own it is a good book, but if it is taken as a piece of the large picture of the series then it really keeps your interest. It still has some good action, mystery, and suspense. The characters introduced and developed end up playing key roles in the plots to come in future books. For these reasons, I have to take a starr off my review even though I loved the book. I love the series! If you like the 'Prince Roger' series by David Weber and John Ringo then you will love these too!

"He's not so short. He's just concentrated."

Roughly the eighth book featuring Miles Vorkosigan in Lois McMaster Bujold's ever-entertaining space opera series the Vorkosigan Saga is Komarr (1998). It opens about three months after the events of the last one, Memory (1997), when the brilliant, curious, hyperactive, and independent Miles apparently found his calling as an Imperial Auditor, a detective/diplomat/judge/paladin who speaks with "the Emperor's Voice." Because Miles and his eight fellow Auditors wield the authority of the Emperor without rules as they solve unusual, challenging, and politically delicate cases, it would seem to be an ideal gig for Miles. And it is, but for one small drawback: it tends to put him on the defensive and to deny him his "forward momentum" that has entertainingly (for us) helped him get into and out of so much trouble in past novels. In this one Miles has traveled to Komarr with his older Auditor colleague Vorbathys to investigate the accident which may be sabotage by which a freight space ship crashed into the solar mirror system vital to the ongoing terraforming of the harsh planet.

Great Writing

This is the first sci-fi series that I've read. I went through all three books in this series in about 4 weeks.

One of the best things about this series is Anderson's ability to bring the worlds and charcaters to life with believeable conflict and plot lines.

Warning...he ends each novel with a cliff hanger, which is madening now that book 4 won't be published for a few months. Book 5 won't be out for another year and book 6 in two years. Ick! I'm not a patient person and I can't wait to find out what happens to the characters.

Is definitely worth the time.

Fun-Fun-Fun; Saga of Seven Suns is Fun!

Anyone who has loved Robert Heinlein, Ben Bova, Spyder Robinson, Andre Norton, Timothy Zahn, Bill Smith, Brian Daley, A.E. Van Vogt and too many others to remember to mention will love Kevin J. Anderson's Saga of the Seven Sun Series. His character development and plot twists keep the books unpredictable, the universe he has created is interesting, and the stories come to life as you read or listen.

I will rate every book available on this web site in this series as 5 stars for the same reason, so will not restate this or the written evaluation I added for A Forest of Stars, part of this series.

I highly encourage Audible to add Books 4, 5, and 6 as soon as possible so that its listeners can follow the schemes, characters, and enemy introduced in Book one to an ending of sorts.

Kevin J. Anderson's Book 7, Metal Swarm, not listed as "Book 7," continues the story of these same races, planets, empires, etc., and will be released on audio in December 2007. I hope that audible will add this one to its libray ASAP.

But wait a minute...

I've stuck with this series so far, but just barely. I found the universe represented here to be interesting and inventive, and I liked many of the characters.

My main complaint is the many, many holes in the plot that leave you saying, "But wait a minute. That doesn't make sense because..." And I'm not talking about minor quibbles. I'm talking about major parts of the plot. For example, if the Mage Imperator of the Ildirans retained the memory of the ancient war and how his race was almost exterminated by it, why didn't he stop the humans from deploying the torch, which would surely reignite the war? If the wentils can make a ship for Jess Tamblyn to fly, why do they need him at all? Why don't they fly their own ship and seed the new worlds themselves? And speaking of Jess Tamblyn, if he could be inhabited and transformed by the wentils, why would touching other humans supposedly be fatal for them? And why does everyone keep saying that the existence of the hybrid child of the Mage Imperator and the green priest vindicated a heinous forced breeding progam, when said child was not a product of said program?

After awhile, so many inconsistencies become a constant irritant.

Another complaint is the great amount of filler in this book.

Serious Science Fiction

I'd give this novel 2 stars for page turning entertainment, 4 stars for true science fictional speculation, and 5 stars for hard science research. What held back the entertainment value was the relentless political conflict. I selected this book because I'm fascinated by the idea of a descended species for mankind. I've always hated that most science fiction books create a homo superior by giving them ESP as their defining trait. Greg Bear's approach is far more creative by exploring how this new species evolves. However, Bear spent to many words on political infighting and not enough on what these new people would be like - maybe he's saving that for another novel. I do give Bear great credit for writing a serious science fiction novel and not fantasy escapism that's common to the genre.

A sequel that stands alone

I downloaded this book without realizing that it was a sequel to "Darwin's Radio." I was pleasantly suprised to find a sequel that stands on its own merits and doesn't have to retell the original story for the reader to follow along. This book was a riveting listen. The ideas that Bear presents are amazing and the characters are all very real people. Some characters, such as Stella, are developed much more intensely than others but I think that "Darwin's Radio" probably addressed these characters in more detail. This was my first exposure to Greg Bear's science fiction and I can't wait for more! Now, if only Audible would get the unabridged "Darwin's Radio" ...

Enthralling

Simply put, this book is fantastic. Even though the scientific parts (and they are long when existent) are best taken in short doses, the rest is very immersive and I have gone for hours upon hours without being able to stop listening. With a healthy dose of science, politics, and anthropology, this book is a great listen.

I was thrilled to find this old favorite amongst Audible's new releases, and Ellen Archer's performance truly did it justice. I am very much hoping to see World's End and The Summer Queen follow it up!

Excellent performance of a sci-fi classic

Very pleased with this performance of a much loved book. The narrator did a superb job matching voice to character. Also, kept the complex tale moving forward between the various locales and character groups.

I very much hope that Audible.com will take on Joan Vinge's other works such as the Summer Queen and the Cat/Psion series.

A masterful mix of fantasy and scifi

The writing and world building of this story is magical in tone as well as nature. It has the same feel of wonder that a child might have experiences Alice's adventures for the first time. Yet, the story itself is certainly not child's play, but rather a complex and mature drama set within a world that is both immersive fantasy and scifi.

As with any well crafted tale, in The Snow Queen it is often tough to distinguish hero from villain. In this story, as in real life, things are just not that cut and dried. There are characters with noble intentions who have become corrupted by the ideal of any means to justify to end. Other characters might start with a strong moral compass and flounder when faced with difficult circumstances. The result is that as a reader, one might love each character a little, but then hate them just a bit, too.

Then there are the politics. Vinge is quite masterful in her layer upon layer of intrigue. There is the primary culture clash between Winter and Summer, which plays its own metaphor for so many things; cycles of change, old versus new, technology versus faith, class conflict, and finally recreation through rebirth. At the same time, there is the influence of the off-worlders which contributes to the same concepts and adds even more.

This is an outstanding read and I look forward to exploring the world future through the other books in the series.

Star Wars meets Hans Christian Anderson

A true Sci-fi classic, given a terrific performance. The basic plot focuses on a hero with mysterious powers on a journey to defeat a malevolent space emperor, so Star Wars comparisons are inevitable. Still, published in an era where pulp sci-fi novels were short, morally simplistic, and largely targeted at young boys Joan D. Vinge did something very ahead of it's time. Not one to be missed.

great book

I liked this book. Several spots were predictable but it was overall great. It has the depth and feel of dune meets Hans Christensen; the snow queen is a jewel.

well written steampunk with a real plot

Where does A Study in Silks rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Certainly not among the very best, but really worth a listen for steampunk fans. Holloway does lean on the world building of previous steampunk novels, which makes it useful to have read in the genre already. (She also includes a magical component to her world, which isn't the general rule.) Many steampunk novels so far are so taken up with the technology that the story itself is sometimes rather thin and often short. Holloway instead has a complex plot and real character development; there are real villains, but the heros/heroines are flawed and do evolve over the course of the book. Evelina Cooper, the heroine of the book is the niece of Sherlock Holmes, not a terribly original concept but which gave her a (fairly absent) mentor of a sort and a grounding in the times. She has a mixed background, raised in a circus family, but also the daughter of a society woman of good enough standing that she is able to be on the edges of the aristocracy. There are two romantic threads in the story, but they are not the focus of the story, and it is not at all a typical romance. There are two more books following up on this story line; the book itself is long enough that it doesn't feel like an arbitrary way to sell more books. A Study in Silks is truly finished, but I do want to read more about these characters. (Neither sequel is available in audio yet.)

Pretty well the whole book; a few slow moments but mostly the book moved forward consistently quickly. A few repetitions in scenes that could have been helped by better editing.

Not really that kind of book. More of a thriller/adventure.

it's entertaining but.....

I'm enjoying listening to this story overall don't get me wrong. that being said a few of the voices are well terrible. And lets face it a few of these storylines we have heard before.

Getting a bit disappointed

While the story is still interesting and the narration not bad, it's getting annoying now that different narrators are doing the same characters voices in different chapters. The characters keep changing voices now and it's just not as nice to listen to.

Very addictive! I will be telling all and sundry about this series. Better than Walking Dead!

Enjoyable series. If u like Lost u will like this and I hate it when u have a maximum word limit on reviews so annoying

The crazy, scary journey continues

This amazingly well made production continues. I refer you back to my review for episode 3 as everything still applies.

And I am impatient to move on to episode 6.
