    Publisher's Summary:
6599 A.D.: The war between the Earth Federation and the Herculean Empire had been over for more than three centuries. The planet in the Hercules Globular Cluster was a cinder; the few descendents of the surviving Herculeans lived on Myraa's World, half a galaxy away, in what seemed to be a religious commune. But on an unnamed planet, deep within the Hercules Cluster, two survivors, father and son, gather their resources and plan to enforce a reign of terror over the Federation worlds. But the woman Myraa has a different vision - one which excludes empires and warring armies. Subtly, she strives to shape events toward a different end.
Rising to one of the most unusual climaxes in recent fantastic literature, this novel of chase and vengeance depicts a colorful, poetic future which is struggling to overcome its past. Filled with striking twists and vivid ideas, this is space opera at its most modern.

I had forgotten how bad this is
What do you think your next listen will be?
Just finished Glen Cook's The Dragon Never Sleeps (GREAT BOOK!), about to start Ann Leckie's Ancillary Mercy.
What three words best describe Oliver Wymans performance?
    "Better than deserves."
What character would you cut from The Omega Point Trilogy?
Can't think of many I'd keep.
    Any additional comments?
I generally try to avoid bad reviews, except in those cases where it's SO bad I wish someone had warned me off.
This is one of those times.
The book only really has one interesting plot-related idea, that the Terrans would really rather capture and rehabilitate the terrorist main character, rather than kill him. Of course, this horribly backfires through a series of increasingly weird and arbitrary deus ex machina moments.
There's some interesting tech ideas, which I remembered, any which continue to be somewhat nifty. The story, though, is a waste of time, and the cool stuff isn't enough to make it worth it.
Megalomaniac author's story about a megalomaniac
George Zebrowski should have been a poet. That is his true calling in my view.
In a really long novel though, his megalomania really shows up. The story is about a twit who survived the fall of his humanoid race. The twit then goes in a rampant murder spree against civilians of the opposing race, i.e. behaves like a terrorist. And he behaves in a delusional way with no real self reflection to realise he's been wrong. He just keeps going on despite his friends and foes alike trying to help him stop his own self destruction and his wanton maasacres.
That above passage pretty much covers what happens in the first part of the book. George Zebrowski however drags it out right into the second part.
Somewhere in the middle of part 2, I gave up. I couldn't listen to rantings of a self obessed terrorist repeating what he said earlier. Never mind that the reviews talked about "building towards an innovative end". The reality is that George Zebrowski indulged in wordiness and high level concepts at the EXPENSE of the listener. These additional words served no other purpose than to feed George's ego in his superior writing skills. So, this review is based on listening to almost two third of the book.
In summary, as a listener, I found this novel to be a waste. Perhaps other people can be more patient than I and listen the whole way through.

    Publisher's Summary:
High crimes call for high punishment.
It is the 21st century. Convicts are sentenced to asteroids that move in ever-widening solar orbits, timed to return when their terms run out. But a few ambitious administrators discover that small "errors" in velocity can rid them of selected groups altogether: the hardcore violent, the mentally defective, and especially the political dissidents.
Enduring the black vise of interstellar space-time, these human rejects - men and women mixed together - create their own Darwinian societies, struggling to survive. Back on Earth, a handful of sympathetic and curious scientists have not forgotten these lost citizens.
When a technological breakthrough makes it possible to overtake these scattered asteroids, a courageous team sets out to go where none has willingly gone before. What they discover in these "brute orbits" is both provocative and moving - a startling vision of humanity you will never forget.
    Critic Reviews:
"Like his previous tales of technocratically engineered futures (Macrolife, Stranger Suns, etc.), Zebrowski's latest evokes the pioneering SF of social philosopher Olaf Stapledon." (Publishers Weekly)

    Alcatraz in Orbit
Would you consider the audio edition of Brute Orbits to be better than the print version?
Earth dumps its prison population in space in hollow asteroids without guards and eventually without hope. Initial premise is that the asteroid would return after the sentence is served. After consideration, why bring them back?

    Somewhat Dissapointing
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I'm in the process of writing a Science Fiction story about astroid mining. So I was interested in reading someone else's story plot. It was time well spent.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
I would have included more imaginative technical details.
What about Paul Costanzos performance did you like?
he was smooth in his deliveryand allowed the story to flow.

It's a fantastic book with a well-crafted plot that takes you through the galaxy with a main character you feel that you know immediately. This is space opera in the best sense of the term.

Most of the book is his trip from the backwater planet where he grew up to the University on Mars. Publisher's Summary:
A heart-warming tale of Armageddon from one of the funniest, most original voices in comic fiction today.
The third planet out from the star was blue, with green splodges. Dirt. Oh, the bomb thought. And then its courage, determination and nobility-of-spirit subroutines cut in, overriding everything else, adrenalizing its command functions and bypassing its cyberphrenetic nodes. Here goes, said the bomb to it. Calibrate navigational pod. Engage primary thrusters. Ready auxiliary drive.
It knew, in that moment, that its own doom was near; because it was giving itself orders, and it wasnt putting in any thes. That was what you did, apparently, when the moment came. You could also turn on a flashing red beacon and a siren, but mercifully these were optional. Oh #//+! thought the bomb, and surged on towards Dirt like an avenging angel.
    Critic Reviews:
"A clever, funny, tirelessly inventive, apocalyptic leg-hump of a book. Tom Holt may be the most imaginative satirist to land on our shores since Douglas Adams." (Christopher Moore)

    Simply Fabulous!!!
What made the experience of listening to Blonde Bombshell the most enjoyable?
To put it simply, this is a hilarious and truly original story which read in way which not only tells that story but also brings the characters to life
What other book might you compare Blonde Bombshell to, and why?
If you enjoy the DiscWorld series by Sir Terry Pratchett, you'll love this. Not because the subject matter is at all similar, but rather that the writing style has the same depth of character and subtle deftness of hand that even the most ridiculous scenarios are totally immersive.
What does Ray Sawyer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
A great style of reading, nae acting, for these titles truly are performed by Ray Sawer. This in turn make these stories almost impossible to pause as the ride is so enjoyable.
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Laugh out loud comedy. well written, with a subtle hand which make the humour all the better
    Any additional comments?
if you only but one book this year, you could do far far worse than pick one of Tom Holts. It just happens that Blonde Bombshell is my personal favourite. If I could give it 6 stars, I would.
Just as good every time you listen
If you could sum up Blonde Bombshell in three words, what would they be?
    Funny, different, entertaining
What was one of the most memorable moments of Blonde Bombshell?
I always love the "Barbie" moment
What about Ray Sawyers performance did you like?
He has great voices and great comic delivery.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The book is more funny than moving but I did empathise with several of the main characters.
    Any additional comments?
This is one of my favourite audiobooks. The characters are likeable and interesting and I laugh at the same bits every time. Entertaining escapism when you need cheering up.
    smart and hilarious!
an awesome story that had me laughing out loud at the intelligent humour.
Tom Holt's unique mix of aliens space travel and household "pets" make it a great read/listen!
Not as expected- even better than thought
Once again a throughly great read, or should I say story. Love being read to
    A voyage of discovery

    Critic Reviews:
"[This] playful take on fashionistas of the future is diverting." (Publishers Weekly)
"Grey is a legendary book waiting to happen. It's a mad, stylish, trippy, endlessly inventive romp through the biohazardous wastes of post-genre literature. Jon Armstrong is a genius, with an umlaut, to the fifth power." (Michael Chabon)
    Members Reviews:
    Imaginative, revolutionary, original.
If you could sum up Grey in three words, what would they be?
    Imaginative, revolutionary, original.
What other book might you compare Grey to and why?
It's the first book of it's kind I've listened to. But in terms of vision and innovation I put it up there with Neuromancer, Snowcrash, or Ender's game.
    Which scene was your favorite?
I love the opening scene with Michael and Nora on their last date on board of the super-luxury Bee Train. It sets the mood for the rest of the book. If you enjoy the first chapter you'll love the rest of the book. In-fact even the first sentence of the book is a great indicator of where things are going.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Grey had me completely captivated from the opening scene. I had a hard time putting it down. I am listening to it for the second time and once again, I am completely engrossed in it.
    Any additional comments?
While I enjoy many books it isn't often that I come up against one that breaks new ground. Grey did that for me. It is set in an amazingly well imagined world that with strong characters that, while completely crazy, are also internally consistent. This book is definitely on my top 10 list of all time best.
    Listeners "Be Ware"
This listen was the most disgusting piece of "I don't know what" that I have ever listened to. Filthy depictions of characters eating, wearing, and playing with explicite, human, body parts.... gross. I am so disappointed that "Audible" would even allow this in their reporatoire that it temps me to disconnect my subscription with Audible. The introduction of this book in no way warns the listener of the filth they are about to invade their mind with. If Mr, Armstrong used his. grotesque, twisted mind and exuburance for imagination and put it towards the positive, he would be brilliant. The narrator is the only one getting a star from me.
    shocked by content!
this book should have a warning about its explicit content! which is extremely crude, the plot is rather confusing.

    Publisher's Summary:
What happens when the inevitable zombie apocalypse finally does arrive? Does the world bow down to the masses of shambling dead? Do we run out with flame-throwers and chainsaw-bladed weed-whackers to take care of the undead horde? No, we do to them what we do to every other annoying person in the world: We put them on television for our entertainment.
Set in a near future in which society has dealt with the global outbreak of the living dead, a new, highly lucrative international sport, zombie pit fighting, emerges. No Flesh Shall Be Spared is the story of Cleese, his recruitment and rise to supremacy in this violent world, where every match could be his last. The Dead will fall. Friends will die. The question that arises is that of Cleese's fate in the ensuing mayhem.
    Members Reviews:
A gory gem of a novel, Carnell has created a cult hero that deserves a place in the horror pantheon.
Thom Carnell's No Flesh Shall Be Spared manages to muscle its way into the crowded zombie genre with a stirringly tense and violent take on all things undead. While all the elements of classic Z-fare are here, Carnell's novel takes place post-crisis, when humanity has turned the tide on the walking dead. Vengeance and bloodlust give rise to human vs zombie pit-fights as sports entertainment.
Into this 21st century Colosseum steps the protagonist of NFSBS. Cleese possesses the cult charisma of Ash Williams and the hidden depths of a latter-day Musashi. This is the story of his triumphs, and his heart-rending losses. He deserves a wider audience, and one hopes that more of his tale is yet to be told.
    Fantastic!
This book is one of the reasons I can justify sifting through mountains upon mountains of 99cent to 3 dollar crap in the Kindle store. Because sometimes you stumble upon that diamond in the rough and you end up with a truly great book that you got for less than the price of a Happy Meal. Total steal. This story is the most wonderfully realized and complete universe I've ever encountered in a zombie novel. Every detail is so well-thought out and described that I couldn't help but smile at some of the more eloquent passages. Yes, eloquence in a zombie story. Almost every character gets a chapter of back story and these are almost more interesting than the story that takes place in the "present." Each one of the flashback chapters could be its own short story and it'a kind of a shame that the author blew through so many of these great angles and included them all in the same book. He could have gotten years of mileage out of seperating them! Oh well, it just makes the story that much better and the astounding length of the book that much more of a bargain. My only complaint is that some of the more interesting characters and developments get dropped halfway through and the climax was not the big disaster I thought it was building to. But I'm not going to knock points off of a well-written story just because it didn't go where I thought it would. No Flesh Shall Be Spared is an A+++ and I can not recommend it highly enough.
