    Title: America's Queen
Subtitle: The Life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
    Author: Sarah Bradford
    Narrator: Sandra Burr
    Format: Abridged
Length: 9 hrs and 1 min
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-27-08
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 39 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In America's Queen, the acclaimed biographer of Queen Elizabeth and Princess Grace reveals the real Jackie in a sympathetic but frank portrait of an amazing woman who has dazzled us for years.
Using remarkable new sources - including in-depth interviews with Jackie's sister, Lee Radziwell - Sarah Bradford has written a timely celebration of a life that was more private than commonly supposed.
Jackie's privileged upbringing instilled rigid self-control, while her expedient marriage into the overwhelming Kennedy clan consolidated her determination. Revealing new testimony from many of the couple's friends shows the profound complexities both of this apparently very public relationship and of her controversial marriage to Aristotle Onassis.
Here is the private Jackie - neglected wife, vigilant mother, and working widow - whose contradictory and fascinating nature is illuminated by all that Bradford has discovered.
    Critic Reviews:
"An insightful book about a quintessentially American woman....Even after reading this intensive portrait, we remain insatiably curious about [her]. (Kirkus Reviews)
"Some of the most personally knowledgeable observations about [Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis] that have ever been put into print." (The Boston Globe)
    "Compulsively readable." (The Washington Post)

    American Royalty
This is the most intimate biograghy, and perhaps the most accurate book of Jackie's entire life. It is the second best work ever published about our most beloved First Lady, the finest being Sally Bedell Smith's Grace And Power, which was written some time afterward. This recording of Bradford's biography was originally released on both cassette and CD audio in abridged form, as is this recording. I would have enjoyed this so much more if this audible reading had been unabridged as so many lengthy biographies are, because Sandra Burr's voice is execellent.
    phenomenal!
this was an awesome book. loved every second of it. deducting would recommend it to anyone.
The Life of an American Icon
Where does America's Queen rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This was a fascinating story about one of the most famous women in the world, the story however did not really shed any light on this woman's life.
What did you like best about this story?
I really enjoyed the the whole Onassis period of her life.
Which character as performed by Sandra Burr was your favorite?
I found Sandra Burr's narration competent if somewhat flat. She was just reading and did try to imitate any of the characters in this book.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Double Edge Sword of Fame.
    Any additional comments?
I think it is somewhat sad that this intelligent woman rather than relying on her own obvious skills, choose to marry rich instead of carving out a solid career for herself. Achieving this only in the later part of her life.
    Excellent listening
Would you listen to America's Queen again? Why?
First time listener..great and interesting take on Jackie O.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Her ability to take charge after President Kennedy was killed.

    Publisher's Summary:
With wisdom that only aging gracefully can bestow, she talks frankly about her four marriages as well as her other relationships, including her courtship with Sidney Poitier; racial politics in show business; and the personal cost, particularly to her family, of being a pioneer.
From a recent, Emmy-nominated role on Grey's Anatomy to appearances on Oprah, Diahann Carroll's legendary stage, film, and television career has spanned more than five decades.
Her title role on Julia beginning in 1968 established Carroll as the first African-American actress to star in her own television series. The role garnered her both an Emmy nomination and a Golden Globe win to go along with the 1962 Best Actress Tony Award she won for her role in No Strings (also a first for a black woman). Diahann also received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress for her role in Claudine.
In the 1980s, Diahann joined the glitzy night-time soap opera Dynasty as the jet-setter Dominique Deveraux.
Carroll's career continued strong in the 1990s with appearances in films such as The Five Heartbeats; she also starred as Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard.
As a breast cancer survivor and activist, Carroll invited a camera crew into her treatment room for a national broadcast special to draw attention to the cause.
Ever the consummate performer, her new cabaret show at Feinstein's has traveled nationwide to sold-out audiences.

    Candid, Revealing, and Fun
Diahann Carroll is in fine form and shares some of the most intimate moments and lessons learned from a rich life.
Diahann Carroll, as you never imagined
Loved it. Very forthright and real. I have enjoyed Ms. Carroll over the years, however, hearing her narrate her life's successes and failures with such candor made her seem more of a real person; relatable.
    Mixed up mess
What disappointed you about Legs Are the Last to Go?
In the beginning of her book she talks about how she fell down some stairs. What she forgot to say was that she must have been carrying the final draft of this book with her to take to the printers office, and in fall, the chapters were disarrayed and never put back in order. That is the only reason I can see why this book is just a mass of stories that don't always have a start or sometimes a finish.
It has no flow. It is just a bunch of stories that have no structure. She jumps from one story and subject to another, sometimes in the middle of a story, so you forget what the point of her story was or who she was talking about. One minute she is talking about the death of someone and then she is talking about a dinner she had with them. You sit there and think "I thought they died three chapters back?" She also seems to really think she is the greatest talent out there. No humility in her at all.
She also never really concludes a story she is telling. For instance She talks about her run-in with Andrew Lloyd Webber and how she walked out of her audition for Sunset Blvd. She felt he was a racist. Later she talks about playing the part but you never find out how she got the part in Sunset Blvd if she walked out on him after telling him off.

His adventures on the road are by turns funny and moving as he meditates on growing older, the terrors and joys of trying to be funny in front of a live audience, and on the nature of comedy itself. He interweaves stories of his former laddish behavior and also tells a love story about a girl he had a brief fling with years ago who comes back into his life while he is touring. At the age of 50, Frank Skinner asks himself: Is it time to grow up?

    Beats the Written Word!
I have long been a fan of Frank Skinner. Recently I purchased a couple of his live stand up sets from Audible and was dismayed by their expensiveness and poor sound quality, not to mention all that the listener misses out on by not being able to see what Frank is doing.
I have read his autobiography (with my actual eyes) and was very impressed. However, by this audio book, I was blown away!
It?s unfortunately abridged, but not so heavily that it seems more like a synopsis than a credible book.
It provides a contemporary and honest look at Frank?s life, centring on his recent return to stand up with some old stories thrown in for good measure.
I was laughing out loud in places; Frank uniquely balances fine and fowl language with equal articulacy.
Someone reading the actual book would definitely be missing out on this occasion, with Frank falling into his stand up routines with practiced tone and timing that of course would be missing from the written word.
On a couple of occasions he actually plays an instrument and sings, I can only assume readers got the lyrics.
So this is definitely a good purchase for any Skinner fans, and in my opinion one of the best recorded and involving audio books available.
    Well Done Mr Skinner
Wicked. Narrated by Frank himself, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the ups and downs of his recent Tour. There were plenty of stand up one-liners to whet my appetite for more. The tears just rolled from laughter in many places.
Based on this, if there was a tour venue near me, I'd be there!
    Brummie Gem
A smashing audiobook giving us an honest glimpse into the deepest recesses of this most talented man. And a lot of big laughs. The stuff about granny porn was particularly welcome as well as the George Formby de nos jours .
    Frank Skinner on the road.
Frank Skinner on the road is more of a document/ story. it is not stand up as a fan I am quite disappointed.
Frank, but not as I know him.....
I am an avid fan of Frank Skinner's radio show on Absolute, waiting in anticipation each weekend for the podcast to download and listen to repeatedly during the week till the next is available. Also love his current TV shows, and remember Fantasy Football, the 3 Lions and much of his earlier TV success solo and with David Baddiel.
Due to all the above this was my first chosen download from 'Audible', and some of it is hilarious - all of it is honest, sometimes poignant and touching, but some of it just too close to the mark for me. I didn't consider myself a prude, but some of the graphic detail on encounters and the repeated swearing I found difficult to 'listen' to.

In this deeply personal story, he recalls his rise to stardom. Wagner's life, told in a gracious manner
This is an interesting autobiography. Mr. Wagner narrates his story himself (and sounds more like a 30-year-old than a 78-year-old; his voice has not aged at all), and he does a fine job with it. It's also a generous autobiography, in that Mr. Wagner is more interested in chronicling what went right with his life and praising those who helped him and those whom he loved and loves (Natalie Wood, Jill St. John) than tearing people down.
The only problem is that this is an abridged version, so some parts will leave you puzzled. Out of left field there's a comment about Hjordis, Mrs. David Niven; it's clear that Mr. Wagner doesn't think she was good for David Niven, but why? The answer is doubtless in an abridged part.
Some critics over on Amazon.com have said that Mr. Wagner doesn't say enough about the night of Natalie Wood's death, but the account here is plausible. And please--can't the public let this go? It must have been difficult enough to write about (and narrate) this part without going on for a long time about this painful episode.
    Heart to Heart
There were few downbeat moments in R.J. Wagner's life story reading. His voice seems as young and vigorous as ever and he has many interesting things to relate about his 60 years of interacting with Hollywood's famous, from caddying for Clark Gable to his television years in Hart to Hart. There is more to his life than his marriages to and loss of Natalie Wood.
I really am glad I bought this book!!
I'm glad to have finally read the truth. Mr. Wagner waited a long time to tell his side, but it closed the door on what really happened with Natalie Wood and his family. He covered all the stories that were out there with the truth. You will know it's the truth, because he didn't deny any of them. I ended his book with a renewed respect for him and what really happened.
    The title says it all
What a wonderful experience listening to Robert Wagner tell his love-life story. Loved every minute of this listen, but so still sad to this day at the loss of Natalie. This book and narration is so rich. The picture on the cover and the title say it all. I loved the history again of the good part of Hollywood, and the Golden Era, and this was sheer enjoyment and such extremely good writing. This was the 2nd of his three books I listened to, and I recommend this one 2nd after You Must Remember This.

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
And now, at last, the most important woman in the history of television journalism gives us that "whole package", in her inspiring and riveting memoir. After more than 40 years of interviewing heads of state, world leaders, movie stars, criminals, murderers, inspirational figures, and celebrities of all kinds, Barbara Walters has turned her gift for examination onto herself to reveal the forces that shaped her extraordinary life.
Barbara Walters's perception of the world was formed at a very early age. Her father, Lou Walters, was the owner and creative mind behind the legendary Latin Quarter nightclub, and it was his risk-taking lifestyle that made Barbara aware of the ups and downs that can occur when someone is willing to take great risks.
The financial responsibility for her family, the fear, the love all played a large part in the choices she made as she grew up - the friendships she developed, the relationships she had, the marriages she tried to make work.
Ultimately, thanks to her drive, combined with a decent amount of luck, she began a career in television. And what a career it has been! Against great odds, Barbara has made it to the top of a male-dominated industry.
She has spent a lifetime auditioning, and this book, in some ways, is her final audition, as she fully opens up both her private and public lives. In doing so, she has given us a story that is heartbreaking and honest, surprising and fun, sometimes startling, and always fascinating.

I know Barbara Walters much better now
Barbara and I are the same age. I found her book engrossing and very insightful as to her problems throughout her life. It was good to get to know her a little better and helps me to admire her even more. Good luck, Barbara - and keep smiling!
    Not a masterpiece, but enjoyable!
I enjoy biographies and memoirs, and this one is not bad. Never a real fan of Ms. Walters, I have become one since reading this. Her candor is refreshing, and I came away with new respect for a woman who has shown such dignity and tenacity in her quest for success. Easy listening!
    Well done!
Refreshingly honest without tawdry details of her personal life. Well narrated. An interesting insight to the way things were (and probably still are) for a woman to get ahead in this man's world. Thank you Barbara.
    audition
I thought is was wonderful. I love Barbara Walters anyway. It was nice to listen to how she had to overcome so many battles to become who she is today. She paved the way for women today in her field. I have a sister that is mentally ill and I could understand her feelings about so many things that related to her sister. I love her show the "View". She continues to give us interviews we love.
    Audition
The only thing I found disappointing was that I do not think the whole book is on the audio because she talked on "The View" about her great love affair with a very influential black man and others, yet in the audio, there is nothing listed about any great affairs.

    Somewhat disappointing
What would have made What's It All About? better?
It was too short, but of course that was the length of the book I would imagine.
If youve listened to books by Michael Caine before, how does this one compare?
    Haven't listened to any other.
What didnt you like about Michael Caines performance?
I love Michael Cain but he's not a very animated reader. The material was fairly interesting, but delivery was lacking
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from What's It All About??
    Not sure.
    Fantastic!
I love Michael Caine, and in his autobiography he comes out as witty and entertaining. He has a wonderful voice and it is not at any point boring.
    Oddly monotone
Michael Caine's led a rags-to-riches life and has some amusing stories to tell along the way. Unfortunately his performance on this 1992 abridged reading is almost completely flat and monotone. About the only time it perks up is when he remarks, as part of a major edit in the story, that if we want to know more about his numerous films we'll need to read the book - I could almost hear him laughing as he said it. His 2010 autobiography 'The Elephant to Hollywood' (also available here on Audible) is far more entertaining and far better value too. It covers the same ground and then some - a generous, unabridged 10 hours of the irrepressible Mr Caine rounding up his life so far.
    good but short
off to listen to next book as this was nice but very brief. completely skipped some chunks
Eye opening insight to Mr. Caine's poor backgroun.
Michael Caine's self-narrated Auto Biography makes all the difference to this audible book.
Highly recommend it. Unbelievable how down to earth this immensely successful A-Lister was and still is.
My wife and I listened to this from start to finish within a 280mile round trip in the car.
We hope there's another self-nareated Michael Caine auto-biography.

What a life this man had.
Amazing biography and some morale common sense lessons.
Like his name this book is uniquely informative
Calming voice ,life lessons in stories thank you and bless you. Cherishable read .Your granddaughter is so lucky to have a living father time with so many rich experiences.
    Almost a curates egg
I have admired Sidney Poitier's performance in many films and I thought this book would give me an insight into the real man, which it did. The book is constructed around letters that Poitier penned to his great granddaughter, in which he shares his experiences of life and his home grown philosophy. The problem that I had was that I wanted to know more about his experiences of working on his major films and he does not do that. Also, the start of each chapter directly addresses his great-granddaughter in a way that was rather cloying. So, I found the good bits were the very candid biographical nuggets of a man who started out from a very poor situation and who travelled through life with great dignity. However, about half of the book was of less interest, being either Poitier's philosophical views, or sentiments aimed at his great granddaughter. If an editor had extracted biographical information and enhanced it with inputs from other people, about Poitier's life and career, then I think it would make a five star read.

In a career that has taken him from a schoolboy production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to the red carpet on Oscar Night with "Chariots of Fire", via starring roles in the West End stage, classic television series like "Don't Wait Up", and a cameo in "Little Britain", the Hollywood blockbusters that made him a household name are only the beginning.
With characteristic modesty and a captivating eye for the absurd, he treats us to the highlights and lowlights of a life like no other - a life in which chilling reality (watching his father Michael, later the attorney general, begin his prosecution of the Yorkshire Ripper) and beguiling fantasy (sleeping with Elizabeth Taylor) has continuously and arrestingly collided.

    Embers, not Blazes
Nigel Havers, as well as being a gifted actor, is a gifted raconteur. This book is light and entertaining and moves along at a fast pace. Havers comes from a distinguished judical family, and the most interesting part is the beginning, when he speaks of his family. The anecdotes about the Rolling Stones are amusing [his mother applying calamine lotion on buttocks will make you laugh]. The anecdotes become strained towards the end, however. And if you are looking for character growth or self-revelation, this is not the place to find it. Entertaining, but the book could have been so much more.
lovely read by the author...but abrupt ending...soured it.
This is an abbreviated version of the book read by the author himself in his admittedly very "posh" English accent...which I admire and enjoy. I found the listen very enjoyable...if brief but the ending was absolutely shockingly a "cliff hanger" sort of...without the book it would be even more irritating.

    Publisher's Summary:
Pistol is more than the biography of a ballplayer. It's the stuff of classic novels: the story of a boy transformed by his father's dream and the cost of that dream. Even as Pete Maravich became Pistol Pete, a basketball icon for baby boomers, all the Maraviches paid a price. Now acclaimed author Mark Kriegel has brilliantly captured the saga of an American family: its rise, its apparent ruin, and, finally, its redemption. Almost four decades have passed since Maravich entered the national consciousness as basketball's boy wizard. No one had ever played the game like the kid with the floppy socks and shaggy hair. And all these years later, no one else ever has. The idea of Pistol Pete continues to resonate with young people today just as powerfully as it did with their fathers. In averaging 44.2 points a game at Louisiana State University, he established records that will never be broken. But even more enduring than the numbers was the sense of ecstasy and artistry with which he played. With the ball in his hands, Maravich had a singular power to inspire awe, inflict embarrassment, or even tell a joke. But he wasn't merely a mesmerizing showman. He was basketball's answer to Elvis, a white Southerner who sold Middle America on a black man's game. Like Elvis, he paid a terrible price, becoming a prisoner of his own fame. Set largely in the South, Kriegel's Pistol - a tale of obsession and basketball, fathers and sons - merges several archetypal characters. Maravich was a child prodigy, a prodigal son, his father's ransom in a Faustian bargain, and a Great White Hope. But he was also a creature of contradictions: always the outsider but a virtuoso in a team sport, an exuberant showman who wouldn't look you in the eye, a vegetarian boozer, an athlete who lived like a rock star, a suicidal genius saved by Jesus Christ.

"A delightfully written biography....Highly recommended." (Library Journal)
"What Pistol Pete was to the no-look, 50-foot bounce pass, Kriegel may be to the sports biography: transcendent." (Booklist)

    Extremely Good!
I dont know why exactly but I absolutely love hearing about the story of Pistol Pete. Maybe its just because I am fascinated with the whole child prodigy thing but in any event, I just love this story and could listen to stories about Pistol Pete all day.
With that said, I found that this book takes way too long to get into the story. Slow start. But by the second chapter, this gets great and by the end, it's amazing. I really loved how the author sprinkles in the history of basketball throughout the book and especially enjoyed hearing about Petes father and his beginnings as a player and coach. And the last hour about Pete's children is also very good.
Two thumbs up and if I had more hands, I'd give it more thumbs!
    Surprising Details
I always ratet the book and the reader/production since there are some readers and some productions that can ruin the book as an audiobook. This reader was fine and there was not a lot of unnecessary music etc. in the production. As for the book, very good for a sports biography that pretty much sticks to the details of its subject and does not try to expand the story with too many details about places, historical context, etc.
