    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-26-11
    Publisher: Brilliance Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 81 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In the early 1970s, as our nation's youth railed against every conceivable societal norm, a funny-looking teenage Jew started turning up at open mike nights in various New York City comedy clubs. Surprisingly, he didn't suck. That funny-looking teenage Jew is now the even funnier-looking middle-aged comedian Gilbert Gottfried, who despite his transparent shortcomings has managed to carve out a hardly-respectable career - and a reputation for shock and awe unrivaled outside the Bush administration. With this scathingly funny book of rants and musings, Gottfried sullies an entirely new medium with his dysfunctional worldview.
    Critic Reviews:
"One of the most touching, eye-opening historical accounts - one day I may even read it." (Howie Mandel)
"This is definitely the loudest book I have ever read. It changed my life. After reading it I decided to go through transgender surgery." (Bob Saget)
"Truly the funniest book ever, by one of the funniest guys on the planet!" (Paul Shaffer, musical director, Late Show with David Letterman)

Like being at the Comedy Club!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Gilbert Gottfried is a Master Comedian. I have read/listened to other comedians' books and they are basically their stand-up act in written form. Gottfried is more of a story teller and his book is funny without being a string of jokes loosely tied together.
    loved it!
I am so glad that Gilbert chose to narrate the audio version of this crazy book. it was fabulously entertaining, and heartwarming.
You just want to hug that very funny man...
Where does Rubber Balls and Liquor rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Mister Gottfried is not a Christopher Hitchens or a Noam Chomsky. But I have to say I enjoyed every minute of his book. Since the early '70s, he had a "brilliant" career and he recounts the adventure with his priceless wit.
    Love Gilbert
Great book for a few laughs if you love the comic like me. Only scant deadspots.
    Gilbert Gottfried is amazing...
... but you already knew that. Do you want a book about Gilbert's life, this is it. Do you want something to laugh about, Gilbert will not disappoint. Do you want this total package to be read to you by the Aflac Duck, too bad; they got Gilbert to do it instead which makes this audio book worth all of your accumulated credits. Buy this audio book, laugh, realize how terrible your life is in comparison and move on with your life better for having heard this book.

Title: The Best Advice I Ever Got

    Format: Unabridged

    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 131 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
What was the tipping point for Malcolm Gladwell? What unscripted event made Meryl Streep who she is? How did Mario Batali cook up his recipe for success? In this inspiration-packed book, Katie Couric reports from the front lines of the worlds of politics, entertainment, sports, philanthropy, the arts, and businessdistilling the ingenious, hard-won insights of leaders and visionaries, who tell us all how to take chances, follow our passions, cope with criticism, and, perhaps most important, commit to something greater than ourselves.
Among the many voices to be heard here are financial guru Suze Orman on the benefits of doing whats right, not whats easy; director Steven Spielberg on listening rather than being listened to; quarterback Drew Brees on how his (literal) big break changed his life; and novelist Curtis Sittenfeld on the secrets of a great long-term relationship (she suggests marrying someone less neurotic than you); not to mention:
Along the way, Couric reflects on the good adviceand the misstepsthat have guided her from her early days as a desk assistant at ABC to her groundbreaking role as the first female anchor of the CBS Evening News. She reveals how the words of Thomas Jefferson helped her deal with her husbands tragic death from cancer, and what encouraged her to leave the security of NBCs Today show for a new adventure at CBS.

    Awesome
A great listen....it was a joy to listen to such real life wisdom...again showing us that it is not about how perfect our lives are but just about how we rise to the occasion despite the muddle we get stuck up in.
I recommend this book for anyone looking for retrospection and feeling a bit lost....Katie Couric's book just might point you to all those amazing people in your life who've given you advice despite you noticing it!
    Excellent
If you could sum up The Best Advice I Ever Got in three words, what would they be?
I really got a lot out of this book. I would have bought it as written text, but I really enjoyed
listening to it, piece by piece.
    Any additional comments?
Each piece of advice was unique, yet all advice was divided into sections so that it made sense within the context of the book. There were also introductions for the sections by Katie Couric, which were all enchanting. I will surely listen to it more than once and definitely get my money's worth!
    some inspiring, many banal
Katie should have chosen the best and left out the rest. In addition, having the authors narrate their own advice would have brought it to life. Sadly, the narrators overperformed.
    Good advice
What did you love best about The Best Advice I Ever Got?
It really was full of good advice. Some very common advice, some more spectacular or unexpected.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Best Advice I Ever Got?
    The story from Bill Cosby.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Great read overall
Overall it was a great read. Admittedly there are some pieces of advice that drag on and can get downright painful to finish but the good far outweighs the bad.

    Publisher's Summary:
This is a searing indictment of Rush Limbaughs bankrupt ideology and how he has singlehandedly quashed American political debate.
With almost 20 million listeners on more than 600 stations, Rush Limbaugh is the leading and most dangerous figure in the conservative movement today. John K. Wilson uses the most effective strategy of allRushs own wordsto show how Limbaughs flagrant disregard for the truth and penchant for savage personal attacks laced with racist, sexist, and homophobic slurs have held the political arena hostage. In this scrupulously documented dissection of the media giant, the author reveals how Rushs seductive message of hatred has replaced political debate with paranoia. Limbaughs machine has become so powerful that even Republicans dare not question his conclusions, while liberal shows are forced to engage with him and provide a forum for his venomous agenda.
The Most Dangerous Man in America is a rigorous, definitive takedown of the one man who does more than any other to poison the American airwaves.

  • Reading Jackie Audiobook by William Kuhn

    Title: Reading Jackie
    Subtitle: Her Autobiography in Books
    Author: William Kuhn
    Narrator: Susan Denaker
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 30 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 12-07-10
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 48 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis never wrote a memoir, but she told her life story and revealed herself in intimate ways through the nearly 100 books she brought into print during the last two decades of her life as an editor at Viking and Doubleday. Based on archives and interviews with Jackie's authors, colleagues, and friends, Reading Jackie mines this significant period of her life to reveal both the serious and the mischievous woman underneath the glamorous public image.
Though Jackie had a reputation for avoiding publicity, she willingly courted controversy in her books. She was the first editor to commission a commercially successful book telling the story of Thomas Jeffersons relationship with his female slave. Her publication of Gelsey Kirkland's attack on dance icon George Balanchine caused another storm.
Jackie rarely spoke of her personal life, but many of her books ran parallel to, echoed, and emerged from her own experience. She was the editor behind best sellers on the assassinations of Tsar Nicholas II and John Lennon, and in another book, she paid tribute to the allure of Marilyn Monroe and Maria Callas. Her other projects take us into territory she knew well: journeys to Egypt and India, explorations of the mysteries of female beauty and media exploitation, into the minds of photographers, art historians, and the designers at Tiffany & Co.
Reading Jackie provides a compelling behind-the-scenes look at Jackie at work: how she commissioned books and nurtured authors, as well as how she helped to shape stories that spoke to her strongly. Jackie is remembered today for her marriages to JFK and to Aristotle Onassis, but her real legacy is the books that reveal the tastes, recollections, and passions of an independent woman.
    Editorial Reviews:
William Kuhn has written delicate political biographies before, on the life of Queen Victoria's private secretary and on her Prime Minister, Benjamin Disraeli. Reading Jackie is his first foray into American royalty, and it does not disappoint. The life of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis was both devastatingly public and utterly protected as private. Made famous by her two powerful marriages, most people have no idea that Jackie spent two decades, from 1975 until her death in 1994, as an editor at Viking and Doubleday. More than 100 books passed through her hands during this time, and Kuhn insightfully interprets how Jackie's editorial decisions reflect on her own history, from books on assassination to fashion.
Her work in publishing was of course almost as star-studded as her work in politics, and she often wielded her publishing power for greater political good. Narrator Susan Denaker presents these cameos with the utmost respect, from a soft London undertow for John Lennon to a gentle New York sparkle for Diana Vreeland. Reserving the subtlest of lilts for Jackie herself, Denaker's formidably broad dialect work as a stage actor is tightly reined in here, giving a power to the writing that any attempt at straightforward impersonation would have made laughable. Kuhn's presentation is primarily to lavish praise on the choices our virtuous hero made, but he also allows some more humanizing glimpses into Jackie's coy sense of humor.
This book is not meant to be particularly revelatory, but instead to view from a fresh angle the image America already knows.

  • Seven Dirty Words Audiobook by James Sullivan

    Title: Seven Dirty Words
Subtitle: The Life and Crimes of George Carlin
    Author: James Sullivan
    Narrator: Alan Sklar
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 20 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-08-10
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 89 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In Seven Dirty Words, journalist and cultural critic James Sullivan tells the story of Alternative America from the 1950s to the present, from the singular vantage point of George Carlin, the Catholic boy for whom nothing was sacred.
A critical biography, Seven Dirty Words is an insightful (and, of course, hilarious) examination of Carlin's body of work as it pertained to the cultural times and the man who created it, from his early days as a more-or-less conventional comedian to his stunning transformation into the subversive comedic voice of the emerging counterculture. Sullivan also chronicles Carlin's struggles with censorship and drugs, as well as the full-blown renaissance he experienced in the 1990s, both personally and professionally, when he became an elder statesman to a younger generation of comics who revered him.
Seven Dirty Words is nothing less than the definitive biography of an American master who changed the world and also a work of cultural commentary that frames George Carlin's extraordinary legacy.
    Critic Reviews:
"An excellent account of the life and work of an important and greatly missed artist." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    Couldn't Get Halfway Through
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Obviously not, since I decided not to continue before getting even halfway through. There is nothing wrong with the book, it was just not as interesting as I expected. I love George Carlin and have quoted his bits my whole life, and I was interested in understanding how he developed his unique brand of comic observation of modern life. After five hours of listening, I discovered nothing remarkable there, and I grew tired of listening to what amounted to a detailed long-form version of Carlin's CV.
What could James Sullivan have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
He could have written in more of Carlin's actual comic bits, analyzing where in his history they came from. There are some short examples (how he got his weatherman schtick from Bob and Ray), but not enough, and not all that interesting (his weatherman schtick for example, was lifted straight out of Bob and Ray). Again, nothing wrong with any of this, just not that interesting for me, and I'm a huge Carlin fan.
What does Alan Sklar bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He sounds like he can barely contain himself from laughing out loud as he reads Carlin's lines. Unfortunately, he sounds that way even when he's reading straight exposition as well -- a bit disconcerting.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Definitely, if it was a 60- or 90-minute documentary with a healthy dose of clips of Carlin performing (especially if they were able to unearth some of his early TV work). But as a 10-hour audiobook with someone else reciting his lines (and not enough of them), it just didn't grab me.
    Any additional comments?
I've read similar books about other pop culture figures that I admire -- Woody Allen, J.D. Salinger, Harpo Marx, the Beatles and other rock figures. I tried this book out because I had enjoyed all of those and anticipated a similar experience learning about Carlin's background and career.

    Title: Psychic
Subtitle: My Life in Two Worlds
    Author: Sylvia Browne
    Narrator: Hillary Huber
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 59 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-25-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 87 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
At the age of 73, New York Times best-selling author Sylvia Browne is ready to tell the whole story of her extraordinary life. In Psychic, we meet the woman behind the public figure: from the child receiving her first visits from the spirit world to the teenager doubting her own sanity; from the new mother living through staggering highs and lows to the burgeoning celebrity, and, ultimately, the successful, happily married woman she is today. Filled with never-before-told stories and otherworldly encounters, Psychic is a riveting account of how Sylvia Shoemaker, a traditional girl from Missouri, became world-famous psychic Sylvia Browne.
Nothing is off-limits. Sylvia tells the little-known truths behind her three failed marriages, including physical abuse, bankruptcy, and legal troubles, and the financial and emotional damage they wreaked. She revisits her personal demons and describes her physical challenges, including her relatively recent discovery that she'd suddenly gone blind in one eye. And then there is the greatest surprise of all: Sylvia tells how, once she had reached her 70s, and believed her romantic life was over, the real Mr. Right finally - impossibly - showed up.
While the press has freely, often bitterly, weighed in on Sylvia's most painful stories, she has remained quiet...until now. Unlike any other book Sylvia has written, Psychic reaches deep beneath the surface of her life, including professional and personal experiences that she is sharing publicly for the first time. With candor, warmth, and a great deal of humor, Sylvia Browne has written the singularly captivating tale of a life lived in two worlds, filled equally with harsh earthly realities and mesmerizing spiritual insights.
    Members Reviews:
Great author, fascinating story, terrific narrator
I have either read or listened to a few of Sylvia's books, and this is definitely my new favorite! I have a brand-new level of respect and love for Sylvia - all that she has been through, and she is still looking out for other people, caring for them, loving them, forgiving those who need it (even the former husband who forced her into bankruptcy and caused her public humiliation!)
I don't know that I could be as gracious - but then, after reading her book, I doubt I could live up to most of her humanitarian work and loving people. From the love and care given to the little girl who's mother basically abandoned her, leaving her in Sylvia's care - and Sylvia took her in and loved her and raised her as her own, to her strength in dealing with (and leaving) an abusive husband as soon as she saw even an inkling of a hint that he might start abusing their children, Sylvia has endured more hardships than many ever will, and come through it all with a shining, loving spirit, and a heart that loves God and desires to help her fellow man reach their full potential. I never knew she was a school teacher and found that really interesting - and I bet she was a great one!
The book is beautifully written, with humor, style, and grace; the story completely engrossing (I listened to the entire 8-hour book in 2 days).

Subtitle: A Life of Henry Aaron
    Author: Howard Bryant
    Narrator: Dominic Hoffman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 21 hrs and 48 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-11-10
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 21 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In the 34 years since his retirement, Henry Aaron's reputation has only grown in magnitude: he broke existing records (rbis, total bases, extra-base hits) and set new ones (hitting at least 30 home runs per season15 times, becoming the first player in history to hammer 500 home runs and 3000 hits). But his influence extends beyond statistics, and at long last here is the first definitive biography of one of baseball's immortal figures.
Based on meticulous research and interviews with former teammates, family, two former presidents, and Aaron himself, The Last Hero chronicles Aaron's childhood in segregated Alabama, his brief stardom in the Negro Leagues, his complicated relationship with celebrity, and his historic rivalry with Willie Mays - all culminating in the defining event of his life: his shattering of Babe Ruth's all-time home-run record.
Bryant also examines Aaron's more complex second act: his quest to become an important voice beyond the ball field when his playing days had ended, his rediscovery by a public disillusioned with today's tainted heroes, and his disappointment that his career home-run record was finally broken by Barry Bonds during the steroid era, baseball's greatest scandal.
Bryant reveals how Aaron navigated the upheavals of his time fighting against racism while at the same time benefiting from racial progress, and how he achieved his goal of continuing Jackie Robinson's mission to obtain full equality for African-Americans, both in baseball and society, while he lived uncomfortably in the public spotlight. Eloquently written, detailed and penetrating, this is a revelatory portrait of a complicated, private man who through sports became an enduring American icon.
    Critic Reviews:
"Plenty of baseball for the fan, but even more insight into why Aaron matters beyond the game." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Bryant evokes the apparently distant world marked by cruel segregation, racism, and poverty of the soul, as well as reliving some of the greatest moments of baseball. A most welcome book, most highly recommended." (Library Journal)

The Last Hero; A Life of Henry Aaron
The truth be told, I am a huge baseball fan so I love these books about the players I watched as I grew up. This book is a really interesting story, includes lots of baseball detail, and offers insight into the history of the sport during Aaron's great career. The reader is good, though someone should have checked the pronunciation of well-known player's names before releasing this audiobook (thus the 4 out of 5 stars). For example, it was distracting and irritating to hear the reader mispronoun Red Schoendienst (I didn't recognize who he was talking about at first) and Bill Virdon's names. Still, this is a small glitch, overlook it and enjoy this book. If you like this, read the wonderful biographies of Clemente and Koufax too.
    Outstanding!
The most complete biography of Henry Aaron I've ever read. Howard Bryant's opus peels back the layers of a man more complex than people were willing to believe he was and puts his quiet strength and dignity on full display.
