    Publisher's Summary:
"My family doesn't do happy endings. We do sad endings or frustrating endings or no endings at all. We are hardwired to expect the next interruption or disappearance or broken promise."
Hope Solo is the face of the modern female athlete. She is fearless, outspoken, and the best in the world at what she does: protecting the goal of the U.S. women's soccer team. Her outsized talent has led her to the pinnacle of her sport - the Olympics and the World Cup - and made her into an international celebrity who is just as likely to appear on ABC's Dancing with the Stars as she is on the covers of Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, and Vogue. But her journey - which began in Richland, Washington, where she was raised by her strong-willed mother on the scorched earth of defunct nuclear testing sites - is similarly haunted by the fallout of her family history. Her father, a philanderer and con man, was convicted of embezzlement when Solo was an infant. She lost touch with him as he drifted out of prison and into homelessness. By the time they reunited, years later, in the parking lot of a grocery store, she was an All-American goalkeeper at the University of Washington and already a budding prospect for the U.S. national team. He was living in the woods.
Despite harboring serious doubts even about the provenance of her father's last name (and her own), Solo embraces him as fiercely as she pursues her dreams of being a world-class soccer player. When those dreams are threatened by her standing within the national team, as when she was famously benched in the semifinals of the 2007 World Cup after four shutouts and spoke her piece publicly, we see a woman of uncompromising independence and hard-won perseverance navigate the petty backlash against her. For the first time, she tells her version of that controversial episode, and offers with it a full understanding of her hard-scrabble life.
Moving, sometimes shocking, Solo is a portrait of an athlete finding redemption. This is the Hope Solo whom few have ever glimpsed.

    Not your normal memoir
First off, I purchased the book because my son plays keeper, and we both enjoy watching Hope Solo play--she is arguably one of the best goalkeepers in the world, male or female.
I had hoped for some inside tips--special tricks of the trade, a glimpse of a Michael Phelps type diet, a great drill that helped form her amazing reaction to the ball. Nope, not a word and you could probably substitute basketball or volleyball for soccer and still have same story. .
This isn't that type of book(and not for kids!)--if you want a good book to improve your child's game, try Audible's book by Dan Blank=="Everything your coach..."
Also, even though a sports writer assisted with the writing, the game scenes are as thrilling as the ingredients on a can of green beans
So why read this? Well----sports always have characters, people who have not just awesome talent but a knack for garnering as many headlines off the field as on the field.Tiger Woods, Terrell Owens, Michael Phelps, etc. They add the entertainment value to the sport. This is a fascinating inside glimpse of a such an athlete, and will leave you a better understanding of the pressures that they go through to get to the top of their sport and what helps to keep them grounded.
You should listen this book for four main reasons;:

    Title: Hollywood Hellraisers
Subtitle: The Wild Lives and Fast Times of Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson
    Author: Robert Sellers
    Narrator: Jim Frangione
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 14 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-03-13
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 35 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
In his follow-up to the acclaimed Hellraisers, Sellers traces the intertwining lives and careers of four outrageous Hollywood movie mavericks.
I dont know what people expect when they meet me. They seem to be afraid that Im going to piss in the potted palm and slap them on the ass. - Marlon Brando
I should have been dead ten times over. I believe in miracles. Its an absolute miracle that Im still around. - Dennis Hopper
You only lie to two people in your life: your girlfriend and the police. - Jack Nicholson
The best time to get married is noon. That way, if things dont work out, you havent blown the whole day. - Warren Beatty
Theyre the baddest bad-asses Hollywood as ever seen: Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson. They are men to whom rules did not apply; normal standards of behavior were simply too wearisome to worry about. These are men who brawled, boozed, snorted, and screwed their way into legend - but along the way they changed acting and the way movies were made forever. Hollywood Hellraisers is a whistle-stop tour of jaw-dropping sexual activity, misbehavior of an Olympic standard, all-out excess, and genuine madness. Its a wonder Hollywood survived.
    Editorial Reviews:
An early story in Hollywood Hellraisers has Marlon Brando being taken to kindergarten on a leash. Needless to say, most of this book covers the period after which Brando's leash has come off. Robert Sellers, author of a previous book on the bad boys of British moviemaking, gives gossipy, second-hand accounts of the more sordid aspects of the lives of Brando, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, and Warren Beatty, shuttling through stories of sexual conquest, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, and general bad behavior. None of the four legends were interviewed by Sellers, but as a kind of survey course in actors acting out, Hollywood Hellraisers will raise listeners eyebrows, and Jim Frangione's clear, even-handed narration provides a nice counterpoint to these salacious Hollywood tall tales.

    Title: The Gipper
Subtitle: George Gipp, Knute Rockne, and the Dramatic Rise of Notre Dame Football

    Publisher's Summary:
    Win one for The Gipper.
Has there ever been a better-known and widely-used exhortative phrase in sports? Not likely. But who was the "Gipper", this mythical-like sports figure whose nickname has aroused, in turn, awe, wonderment, curiosity, and amusement since the second decade of the 20th century, and why is his story important? Answering those questions is the formidable task taken on here by veteran sportswriter Jack Cavanaugh, whose Pulitzer Prize-nominated biography of boxing legend Gene Tunney was referred to as "impressively researched and richly detailed" by Sports Illustrated.
More than eight decades after his death, George Gipp is still regarded by football historians as Notre Dame's best all-around player. And it was Gipp and his legendary coach, Knute Rockne, who were largely responsible for putting the small Midwestern all-male school on the map.
Like Cavanaugh's other critically acclaimed books, The Gipper is also a period piece, with a considerable focus on the era before, during, and immediately after WWI. It details the changes that the country underwent during that time, including the onset of Prohibition and the gangs that it spawned in the Midwest such as those active in the South Bend area and in nearby Chicago, headed by the notorious Al Capone.
    Editorial Reviews:
Pulitzer Prize-nominated sportswriter Jack Cavanaugh delves into the remarkable story of George Gipp, the subject of the famous phrase "Win one for The Gipper", uttered first by Gipp's coach Knute Rockne and oft-repeated by Ronald Reagan. Using the backdrop of WWI, Cavanaugh - armed with an inquisitive, probing performance by Nancy Linari - masterfully portrays Gipp's impressive talent, and how he was able to capture the hearts and minds of the American public. The Gipper is a probing look at the legend surrounding the man still widely considered to be Notre Dame's best-ever player.

Could you see The Gipper being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

    Publisher's Summary:
Features a bonus interview with authors Terry Francona and Dan Shaughnessy
From famed manager Terry Francona, a lively, unvarnished narrative of his tenure with the storied Boston Red Sox...
From 2004 to 2011, Terry Francona managed the Boston Red Sox, the most talked-about, scrutinized team in all of sports. In Francona the legendary manager opens up for the first time about his eight years there, as they went from cursed franchise to one of the most successful and profitable in baseball history. He takes listeners inside the rarefied world of a 21st-century clubhouse, from 2004 when they won their first championship in 86 years, through another win in 2007, to the controversial September collapse just four years later. He recounts the tightrope walk of managing personalities like Pedro Martinez and Manny Ramirez, working with Theo Epstein and his statistics-driven executives, balancing their data with the emotions of a 25-man roster, and meeting the expectations of three owners with often wildly differing opinions.
Along the way listeners are treated with back-slapping, never-before-told stories about their favorite players, moments, losses, and wins. Those eight years were a wild, unforgettable ride, and now the fascinating full story can be told in an audiobook that examines like no other the art of managing in today's game.

    I enjoyed it a lot,
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I thought it was interesting. I liked the details of working for such a high profile team.
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favorite character was Terry Francona.
Have you listened to any of Jeff Gurners other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No, I haven't.
    Any additional comments?
Even for a more casual baseball fan, this is really good.
    Fly on the clubhouse wall
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Absolutely. Any Sox fan who has felt a little like George Steinbrenner or Bill Veeck has been running things at Fenway for the past few years without quite being able to put their finger on why they have that feeling will find a lot of clarity in this behind-the-scenes look at the ballclub from a manager's-eye-view. Things you may have noticed, without quite making sense of, all add up here. I expected a bit of sour grapes, but Tito's criticisms of the organization all fit with the more-than-casual fan's experiences of the Red Sox over the past decade or so, and he invariably qualifies them with the acknowledgement that the front office and the manager's office have different agendas because they serve different purposes for the organization.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Francona, somewhat obviously. It's good to hear that some of his more seemingly boneheaded decisions were in view of the bigger picture. While it sucks to spend money to go to Fenway on a day the team rolls over, Tito explains why sometimes that's still the best call for the team and the organization.
Have you listened to any of Jeff Gurners other performances before? How does this one compare?
Not sure if I've heard anything else of his, but the occasional mispronunciations of names - it's "Bill Miller," not "Bill Mueller," regardlesss of spelling - exposes him as someone who doesn't follow the team. Distracting? Not terribly.

    Publisher's Summary:
Telling the remarkable tale of a man who is still remembered on the streets of New Orleans and in the hearts of professional-wrestling fans, this book aims to restore the overlooked Junkyard Dog to his proper place in the history books. In 1979, Sylvester Ritter, also known as the Junkyard Dog, managed to break one of the final color barriers in the sport by becoming the first black wrestler named undisputed top star of his promotion, and this biography reveals all the famous feuds and business back stories that made him a wrestling legend. By 1985, New Orleans was one of the hottest cities in the Mid-South for pro wrestling due in large part to the Junkyard Dog; he became a legend in the Big Easy, drawing sellout crowds to the Downtown Municipal Auditorium and huge crowds to the Superdome, a feat unparalleled by any other wrestler. The King of New Orleans delves into wrestlings recent past and recounts how a region known for racial injustice became the home of the sports first black idol.

    A Primer on Mid-South Wrestling's Glory Years
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
As an Amazon reviewer noted, this book isn't really a biography of JYD the man, so if that's what you're looking for, you'll be disappointed. There's a reason the book isn't called "The King of New Orleans: The Life and Times of Sylvester Ritter."
Instead, Greg Klein uses JYD as an entry point and guide to explore the bygone territorial wrestling system, specifically Bill Watts' Mid-South Wrestling promotion of the late 70s and 80s. As the place where guys like Ted DiBiase, the Fabulous Freebirds, Jim Duggan, Jake Roberts, Paul Orndorff, Mr. Wrestling II, and of course JYD came to prominence, Mid-South holds a special place in the hearts of a lot of old-school wrestling fans who had not yet (or never did) buy into the "sports entertainment" offered by the WWF or later WCW. Klein does a nice job detailing how Mid-South, thanks in large part to JYD, transcended the label of "wrasslin'" and connected with its fans on a personal level. (Some of the heels were so hated that fans tried to storm the ring and stab them.) Because it's easy to assume that pro wrestling is the same now as it always was -- a billion-dollar, worldwide entertainment industrial complex -- it's important to remember, as Klein asks us to, the industry's roots as a network of loosely related regional carnivals, with performers and storytelling devices as distinct and varied as the geography. Seeing how this system changed when a black man became a main-event babyface in the deep south helps shed light on the bigger industry changes to come.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The King of New Orleans?
I greatly enjoyed getting a glimpse into the marketing strategy and booking psychology that went into making JYD the promotion's first black main event draw. For instance, Watts took JYD's weakness -- the fact that he was never a great in-ring worker -- and used it to his advantage by booking him in short squash matches that highlighted his charisma and made him seem invincible and credible as a title threat.

    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Born with cerebral palsy, Geri Jewell inspired a generation of young people when she became the first person with a disability to appear in a recurring role on prime-time television, with her groundbreaking character, Cousin Geri, on the NBC sitcom The Facts of Life. The book's title - Im Walking as Straight as I Can - has a double meaning, referring to both Jewell's sexuality and her extraordinary struggle growing up with cerebral palsy.
This candid memoir details her experiences from her traumatic birth in Buffalo, New York, to her rise to stardom as a stand-up comic to becoming a television star. She documents the harsh realities of show business by recounting the relentless discrimination and abuse she suffered at the hands of people she trusted. Her experiences in the shark-infested waters of Hollywood led her on a journey from the Comedy Store to the White House, followed by a downward spiral, tax problems, drug addiction, marriage, and an accident that nearly claimed her life.
When Deadwood creator David Milch recognized Jewell at a pharmacy, he offered her a role in his new HBO series on the spot, and she began to find hope and happiness once again. I'm Walking as Straight as I Can is an inspiring story, told with grace and self-deprecating humor, one that gives readers a rare glimpse of true courage and perseverance.

    Publisher's Summary:
The amazing life story of Britain's world conquering triathlete, Chrissie Wellington. Chrissie Wellington is the world's No 1 female Ironman triathlete, the current quadruple World Champion and World Record holder. In 2009 she was voted 'Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year' and in 2010 was awarded the MBE. She is the undefeated champion of Triathlon, having won nine Ironman titles from nine races. Her World Record setting race time of 8:19:13 at Quelle Roth Germany in 2010 slashed over 14 minutes from the previous record and where she was only beaten by six men. Chrissie has displayed unprecedented levels of stamina, strength and competitiveness in becoming Ironman World Champion in only her second event at Ironman level. Her victory in Kona, Hawaii in 2007 finishing in 9:08:45 - five minutes ahead of her nearest rival - was described as the 'biggest upset in Ironman history' and 'a remarkable feat, deemed to be near impossible task for any athlete racing as a rookie at their first Ironman World Championships'. She defended her World title in Hawaii in 2008 and again in 2009 and won back her title in 2011 after having to withdraw from the 2010 race due to illness.
This is the remarkable story of how a Norfolk girl - a 'sporty kid, swimming, playing hockey, running, but never excelling and always more interested in the social side of the sports scene' - became a world champion. Chrissie Wellington is the world-record holder for ironman-distance triathlon, and she remains undefeated over the Ironman distance.
    Critic Reviews:
"What emerges from this book is the portrait of a thoroughly nice woman. Her exceptional qualities have led her to achievements that her readers can scarcely imagine. But she still remains touchingly connected to that ordinary girl from Norfolk. It s a winning combination. Jane Shilling, (The Daily Mail)
What amazes me about Chrissie Wellington is not that she wins, but by how much [...] Like Usain Bolt, Wellington has burst on to the scene and destroyed the opposition. Those within athletics said that Bolt was coming but Wellington came from nowhere and wins by a relatively greater margin. James Cracknell

On 22 July 2012 Bradley Wiggins became the first British man ever to win the Tour de France. In an instant, 'Wiggo' became a national hero. Outspoken, honest, intelligent and fearless, Wiggins has been hailed as the peoples champion.

Mixed up chapters. But interesting insights.
Would you try another book from Bradley Wiggins and/or Tom Watt?
    Probably not.
Would you ever listen to anything by Bradley Wiggins again?
    Yes, I will try again.
How could the performance have been better?
The accent was not Bradley. A bit frustrating.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from My Time?
I would order the audio book as it was written. Having chapters playing out of order was very frustrating. As the mixup happened early in the delivery, the mix up was not obvious until I had listened to 80% of it. Very disappointing.
    Any additional comments?
How do I get my money back?
Feels like you sitting right next to Wiggo
Would you listen to My Time again? Why?
Yes. The details of his 2012 racing season including his TdF win and Olympic TT gold are vivid and rich. It feels like you sitting in his living room and he is telling you stories of his epic year. Includes detail about training, preparation, his family, the team and all his highs and lows.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Bradley Wiggins for obvious reasons. Its all about his road career in cycling.
What about Tom Watts performance did you like?
His British accent is awesome for sharing Brad Wiggins' story
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The deep insight into how he and his coaches went against tradition in their preparation for the 2012 racing season.
    Any additional comments?
It's a great book that cycling fans will particularly enjoy.
    boring
After listening to Froomes "The Climb" I would expect Braddley's literally attempt to be entertaining, if not exciting.
Perhaps it's just me and my unfair expectations, but there is no mild way to put it: I found the story line just plain boring.

    Audie Award Finalist, Humor, 2014
Kevin Pollak rose through the comedy club ranks at the feet of Don Rickles and Bill Cosby, Johnny Carson, and George Carlin. Named one of Comedy Centrals Top 100 Stand-Up Comedians of All Time, hes a killer impressionist - Falk, Shatner, Walken, Nicholson - a versatile actor with one of the most respected filmographies around, and an Internet pioneer. Hes done it all, and now hes ready to spill the beans.
Ballsy, hilarious, and revealing, How I Slept My Way to the Middle winningly combines never-before-heard stories featuring A-list entertainers with fan favorites and Kevins own thoughts about how he made it. He turned down his first invitation to do stand-up on The Tonight Show because he knew that hed make a bigger splash if he sat on the couch next to Johnny. That huge risk - which paid off in spades - was just the beginning. Find out how he brought John Belushi to his knees, tortured Paul Reiser (twice), bamboozled Larry King, stole Alan Arkins soul, almost killed Warren Beatty, and sucked face with Robert De Niros girlfriend. Now a new media entrepreneur, Kevin is laughing proof that if you follow your gut and believe in yourself, you can do anything you want - except have a rational conversation with Rip Torn, whos an evil, paranoid $#!%.

    Turns out I'm a fan...who knew?!
To begin this review Ill admit to being on the frivolous side when it comes to entertainment. Even in a serious book/movie I prefer large portions of humor without too much dark violence. Pollaks initial movie career consisted of serious films that while amazing, arent generally my thing (A Few Good Men, for example).
To make matters worse, I really dont care for impressionists. I appreciate the skill and talent that goes into that genre of humor, but impressionists just dont make me laugh. Later in his career Pollak did some lighter movies with more of the clever banter type humor I enjoy, such as The Whole Nine Yards. Bottom line is that though I have nothing against him, Ive never considered myself a Pollak fan.until this book.
I honestly dont even remember why I bought this audiobook, but when I ran out of other books and found this on my iPod I figured I might as well give it a try. I am SO glad I did! Not only did I love this book, but after listening to Pollak telling the story of his life, I have become a huge fan. The stories about Bruce Willis, De Niro, Nicholson, Jerry Lewis, Tom Cruise, Naomi Campbell, Rip Torn and others were entrancing, which is saying a lot since Im also not much for keeping up on the latest celebrity gossip. I just got home from the grocery store and caught myself literally laughing out loud as I listened to this book while shopping. It was honestly that funny.
Pollak makes no apologies for his fairly large ego, but hes also surprisingly likeable and almost humble at times. Dont ask me how he can be an egotistically humble man, but he manages to do so in a way that makes you wish you had the chance to get to know him in person. And, once you realize all the cool things hes done in life you see the ego is justified!
His stories about other legendary performers are mostly positive, but in a funny and interesting way. He makes them seem like real people. When he gushes about some legend hes had the opportunity to work with you feel the sincerity in his praise of them.
