  • Proud Audiobook by Gareth Thomas

    Title: Proud
    Subtitle: My Autobiography
    Author: Gareth Thomas
    Narrator: Matthew Gravelle
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 5 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-03-14
    Publisher: Random House Audiobooks
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Gareth Thomas had it all. He was a national hero, a sporting icon. He was a leader of men, captain of Wales and the British Lions. To him, rugby was an expression of cultural identity, a sacred code. It was no mere ball game. It gave him everything, except the freedom to be himself.
This is the story of a man with a secret that was slowly killing him. Something that might devastate not only his own life but the lives of his wife, family, friends and teammates. The only place where he could find any refuge from the pain and guilt of the lie he was living was on the pitch, playing the sport he loved. But all his success didnt make the strain of hiding who he really was go away. His fear that telling the truth about his sexuality would lose him everything he loved almost sent him over the edge.
The deceit ended when Gareth became the worlds most prominent athlete to come out as a gay man. His gesture has strengthened strangers, and given him a fresh perspective. Gareths inspiring and moving story transcends the world of sport to tell a universal truth about feeling like an outsider, and facing up to who you really are.

    Great Great read
Being Welsh this was ready to relate to. Many of the locations mentioned were placed I grew up visiting and staying at.
I can't say I'm a rugby fan or highly sensitive to the issues he suffered by doing what he did.
But I would highly recommend reading this whatever your into.
    Truthfully engaging.
This is an honest account of a sportsman's turmoil and triumphs. Enjoyed it a lot.
    Compelling story
The book was extremely well written. I question some of the story line though. I had known Gareth for a brief several years before and during his struggle with his sexuality and coming out. I think he left out some very poignant and important parts of his journey that would have given his story more of a overall human interest factor. I look forward to his second book. Hopefully, it will cover more of his personal life encounters and struggles he experienced outside of his professional life. There were very profound relationships he had, that also played a role in his development.
I enjoyed reading his book, but there is way more to his story.
Congratulations Gareth on your contribution to making this world a better place.
    Great read/listen
Great story with great insight into professional sports, the highs, the lows and gives you the realisation that athletes are but first, normal human beings.
    A moving autobiography
I'm not a rugby fan, and I'd never even heard of Gareth Thomas. I was intrigued by the theme of the book and the man on the cover. It's the story of a man who repressed his sexuality, while playing hard to stay hidden in plain sight, on the demanding playing field of life in Wales - where a man had better be a man. Growing up at a time when being gay was unacceptable, he fought on the rugby field, and inside his mind. Playing the game he loved, but maybe didn't quite fit. It's a moving and well written story of the ravages that can come from having to hide your true identity, and struggle to live a lie. Not only psychologically for the first person singular, but for those whose life he touches and entwines with.
The book relays his whole story, the trials, the pain, the triumphs, and does so in a way that is personal and quite captivating.

    Loved it!
I've had the pleasure of meeting. Mario a few years ago when he did a Meet & Greet not far from where I lived at the time.. He was so nice and seemed so down to earth. That's what you get from this book...he's very open and honest about his life from entering the world of being a child star to becoming a loving husband and father. Some of his stories will make you laugh and a couple that might make you cry. All combined I found it very inspirational!
    Learned a lot!
Have always been a fan and so pleased with this book. Mario always looks out for the Latinos. Gracias Mario!
Didn't love this, even though I wanted to
What would have made Just Between Us better?
There's no story. Just Mario talking about how great Mario is at everything, that's the story. It was quite annoying and uninteresting. He ended with a series of cheesy no-brainer quotes.
What was most disappointing about Mario Lopez and Steve Santagati s story?
There's no story. Just Mario talking about how great Mario is, that's the story. It was quite annoying and uninteresting. He ended with a series of cheesy no-brainer quotes.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Mario Lopez?
    Yes.
What character would you cut from Just Between Us?
    There's only one character.
    Any additional comments?
Don't waste your time or money on this book. Listen to JLo's book instead. Lots of real reflection there and she's incredibly sweet and humble. Mario should take notes from Jennifer Lopez.
    As Sweet As He Seems
What made the experience of listening to Just Between Us the most enjoyable?
Learning that the Mario I THOUGHT he was (kind, honest, family man) is the Mario he really is.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Just Between Us?
Learning the truth about his first and very brief marriage
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Possibly talk a little slower at some points of the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There were a few moments that choked me up, mostly the love for his parents and his own family.
    Any additional comments?
It's so nice to learn about a celebrity that has a good normal family background, has "made it", and has remained true to his roots.

    Awesome Book
Loved this book it taught me more about the NBA and the mind of a great but simple basketball player and changed the way I approach the game.
    Very Realistic
Great book very well written. Bird is very honest on his thoughts on the NBA. I would suggest this book to any NBA fanatic.
    excellent fun read
Really enjoyed hearing a legends take on the game. Larry Bird a great player and a great coach. There is quite a bit to take away from this book.
Good book on life and times of Larry Bird
Good behind the scenes insights on Larry Bird. Easy read. Well worth your time and money. Lots of laughs, too.
    Not Great for Me
I bought this book, which was written with Jackie MacMullan because I really liked the book When the Game was Ours, by Bird and Magic Johnson "with Jackie MacMullan." I gave up on Bird Watching after about 40 pages. Much of what I read seemed to be direct quotes from Bird. Bird's speaking style was not that enjoyable for me to read and much of the same material was covered in When the Game was Ours and was, to me, much more readable in that particular book. I highly recommend When the Game was Ours.

    Publisher's Summary:
Ray Mears is a household name through his television series Tracks, World of Survival, Bushcraft Survival, The Real Heroes of Telemark, and many more.
He is a private individual who shuns publicity whenever possible and would prefer to let his many skills tell their own tale - until now.
In My Outdoor Life, Ray tells of his childhood and the formative years when he first developed a passion for both bushcraft and the martial arts skills that are central to his life. Having travelled the world several times over, he is no stranger to risk and has had more than his fair share of dangerous and life-threatening encounters to share with his listeners. But his life is so much more than a tale of derring-do. Shortly after he returned to England having narrowly survived a serious helicopter crash, his father died. Just a year later, he had to face the death of his first wife, Rachel. The book conveys the many sides of Ray Mears, taking us up to the present day - including the previously untold story of his involvement in the man-hunt for murderer Raoul Moat. My Outdoor Life gives us all a chance to share a life story as rich and as inspirational as a walk in woods with the man himself, Ray Mears.
    Critic Reviews:
"Moving...gripping...The rather old-fashioned qualities he admires in others: fortitude, understatedness, loyalty, above all stoicism, are the same ones we admire in him. Long may he survive." (Daily Mail)

    Publisher's Summary:
Special Heart is a deeply touching personal story told through the eyes of a journalist as he faces the most daunting challenge in life - far more frightening than reporting from battlefields, infinitely more momentous than interviewing newsmakers of the day: caring for his critically ill newborn son.
Baier reflects on past challenges as he looks forward with hope, chronicling the steps on his path to national prominence as a television anchor, as well as his unexpected journey into the world of pediatric cardiac disease. With the finely honed insight of a seasoned reporter, and the deep love of a husband and father, Baier shares with listeners the behind-the-scenes stories and emotional narrative of young Paul's life thus far, including the heart-wrenching fears and decisions he and his wife, Amy, have faced together. Surviving every parent's worst nightmare, Bret and Amy emerge - just like their brave young son - scarred but infinitely stronger, and clearly understanding what matters most in life. Reliving three open-heart surgeries and seven angioplasties, the story continues today as the Baier family faces a long road toward a normal, healthy life for Paul. Told by a loving father and master storyteller, this hope-filled account offers an inspirational glimpse into the family of a man who just happens to be someone millions turn to for the day's news.
One hundred percent of what the author receives from the sale of this book is donated to various non-profit pediatric heart causes.
    Critic Reviews:
"Nothing gives you perspective like a medical crisis affecting someone you love, especially a child. "Love conquers all things, and for Bret Baier's family, it helped heal his son's special heart. This is a story you'll never forget - about a child's devastating medical diagnosis - and his parents' courage to fight for their son and then give back to those who saved his life." Interesting look at the businessman
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Definitely. It touches on a more human side of JFK, Jr. that some may have forgotten while remembering the icon.
What was one of the most memorable moments of JFK Jr., George & Me?
The visit to Barbara Streisand's house.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Presenting George Washington's sword like it's no big deal.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
He knew everybody but he was just John.
    Any additional comments?
You also get some insight on his wife. The press had her all wrong. Not an ice queen. Mistakes were made, but they all worked hard on George. John wasn't perfect but this book told me he was everything I thought he'd be; and the good outweighed the bad tenfold.
    A MUST READ
Extraordinary book! Absolutely loved every second of this story. Every detail, every moment, every word was so vividly described! You can imagine every person, place and thing happening from the detailed descriptions. Reading or listening to this book you can envision the events, the characters and locations. You don't have to know anything about politics to enjoy this book. If you love fashion, celebrities, and pop culture you will LOVE this book. Well done Matt Berman!
A different perspective on JFK Jr's life
What did you love best about JFK Jr., George & Me?
The author told the story from his perspective as creative director for George Magazine. He talked about what he knew best--how the covers were chosen, designed, and shot. It was a fascinating way to weave in what he knew about JFK Jr (and his wife Carolyn).
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author--after I read the book I went back to follow up on how his career has unfolded after he left George.

    Publisher: Macmillan Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 158 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
The sensational true story of Eddie Rickenbacker, America's greatest flying ace.
At the turn of the 20th century two new technologies - the car and airplane - took the nations imagination by storm as they burst, like comets, into American life. The brave souls that leaped into these dangerous contraptions and pushed them to unexplored extremes became new American heroes: The race car driver and the flying ace.
No individual did more to create and intensify these raw new roles than the tall, gangly Eddie Rickenbacker, who defied death over and over with such courage and pluck that a generation of Americans came to know his face better than the presidents. The son of poor, German-speaking Swiss immigrants in Columbus, Ohio, Rickenbacker overcame the specter of his fathers violent death, a debilitating handicap, and, later, accusations of being a German spy, to become the American military ace of aces in World War I and a Medal of Honor recipient. He and his high-spirited, all-too-short-lived pilot comrades, created a new kind of aviation warfare, as they pushed their machines to the edge of destruction - and often over it - without parachutes, radios, or radar.
Enduring Courage is the electrifying story of the beginning of Americas love affair with speed - and how one man above all the rest showed a nation the way forward. No simple daredevil, he was an innovator on the racetrack, a skilled aerial dualist and squadron commander, and founder of Eastern Air Lines. Decades after his heroics against the Red Barons Flying Circus, he again showed a war-weary nation what it took to survive against nearly insurmountable odds when he and seven others endured a harrowing three-week ordeal adrift without food or water in the Pacific during World War II. For the first time, Enduring Courage peels back the layers of hero to reveal the man himself. With impeccable research and a gripping narrative, John F. Ross tells the unforgettable story of a man who pushed the limits of speed, endurance, and courage and emerged as an American legend.

A true ace, and an example for us all.
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Great performance, fascinating story.
What did you like best about this story?
Eddie Rickenbacker! That man overcame huge obstacles through determination, planning and unrelenting effort. His very full life held more experience than can be imagined until his biography is read or, in this case, experienced through an audiobook.
Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmanns other performances before? How does this one compare?
None prior, but I certainly appreciated his narration of Rickenbacker's story.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Extreme admiration for the man and his contributions.
    Any additional comments?
This is a keeper. I will listen again and again. I wish I could meet Eddie Rickenbacker and say, "Well done. You are an inspiration to us all."
    Quite a life
    Any additional comments?
This is a good story. I didn't know Eddie was a race car driver early in life nor that he was lost at sea or in a commercial airline accident. It is a good listen.

Pete Rose played baseball with a singular and headfirst abandon that endeared him to fans and peers, even as it riled others--a figure at once magnetic, beloved and polarizing. Rose has more base hits than anyone in history, yet he is not in the Hall of Fame. Twenty-five years ago he was banished from baseball for gambling, then ruled ineligible for Cooperstown; today, the question "Does Pete Rose belong in the Hall of Fame?" has evolved into perhaps the most provocative in sports, a layered, slippery and ever-relevant moral conundrum.
How do we evaluate the Hit King now, at a time when steroid cheats appear on the Hall of Fame ballot even as Rose is denied? What do we make of this happily unrepentant gambler, this shameless but beguiling showman whose post-baseball journey has led him to a curious reality show and to the streets of Cooperstown to hawk his signature, his story, himself?
Best-selling author Kostya Kennedy delivers an evocative answer in his fascinating re-examination of Pete Rose's life; from his cocky and charismatic early years through his storied playing career to his bitter war against baseball's hierarchy to the man we find today--still incorrigible, still adored by many. Where has his improbable saga landed him in the redefined, post-steroid world? Do we feel any differently about Pete Rose today? Should we?
    Critic Reviews:
"Kennedy's book on the tarnished and enigmatic Rose is exceptional. Like the best writing about sport--Liebling, Angell--it qualifies as stirring literature. I'd read Kennedy no matter what he writes about." (Richard Ford)

Good book, not so good production.
It would be nice if the producers took the time and effort to pronounce baseball players names correctly.
    Worst narrator ever
Would you try another book from Kostya Kennedy and/or Ben Bartolone?
    No
What did you like best about this story?
The story's was excellent and appeared to be very well researched giving us a good insight into Pete Rose. Very compelling read.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator was horrible. The story was great. The delivery was maddening, scores of mispronounced names. This is unacceptable. He couldn't even pronounce the name of the current commissioner of baseball correctly. Bud Sell'-ig. What a joke.
This greatly detracted from the story. Where did they find this guy? The worst I have ever heard.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Anger, due to the horrible delivery
    Any additional comments?
Don't ever use this narrator again. He either doesn't care to take his job seriously or those who should have been checking on him should be fired. I wish I had read this great book instead of fuming over the presentation.
    Ben Bartolone--narrator--is terrible
What did you like best about Pete Rose? What did you like least?
Bartolone ruined this book for me. Consistently mispronounces names. Leo Durocher (Da-row-sher, not Due-row-shay), Maury Wills (wills, not will-is).
Narration and Mispronunciation Reduces my Rating
