    Publisher's Summary:
With so much written, rumored, told, and retold about Marilyn Monroe, it's amazing to consider how much we still don't know. On the screen she was iconic, radiant, yet her talent so rarely earned her respect. In life she was intelligent, brilliant, yet regarded as little more than Hollywood's blond bombshell. But who was the real Marilyn Monroe beyond the hit films and the headlines? Take away Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and The Prince and the Showgirl, Some Like It Hot, and The Misfits, and who was the Norma Jean underneath?
Brilliantly, entertainingly, and movingly, Marilyn Monroe: On the Couch shows just what lay beneath Marilyn's iconic beauty. Dr. Dale, a fictional stand-in for the author, sees Marilyn Monroe as few ever have, both inside and out, and transfers those insights to listeners. It's impossible to imagine anyone providing a better or more complete, intimate, and unforgettable understanding of this truly remarkable, even pivotal figure in film and sexual history.

    Good Listen
Although it was pretty sad listening to how needy and delusional she was. It was interesting hearing the other side of what seemed to be a confident woman. I guess she was an even greater actress than everyone thought.
    Nothing original, a waste
Just another rehash of the same bio any Monroe fan has read, only worst. Nonsense, annoying and insulting.
    Magnificent Marilyn!
What an insightful book to her last days, her life and her thoughts. Though, maybe a heavy dreamer a remarkable woman and free thinker! Every person should live so freely! A very nice and light listen. Very enjoyable.
    very revealing.
very interesting way told and atleast was to me revealing. Enjoyed it much. Nothing but respect for Shrinker and Marilyn.
    Loved this book
Lovely read, didn't want it to end would recommend this book to every Marilyn Monroe fan

    Title: Bowie
    Author: Simon Critchley, Eric Hanson
    Narrator: Simon Critchley
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-08-15
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 16 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Simon Critchley first encountered David Bowie in the early '70s, when the singer appeared on Britain's most-watched music show, Top of the Pops. His performance of "Starman" mesmerized Critchley: it was "so sexual, so knowing, so strange". Two days later Critchley's mum bought a copy of the single; she liked both the song and the performer's bright orange hair (she had previously been a hairdresser). The seed of a lifelong love affair was thus planted in the mind of her son, aged 12.
In this concise and engaging excursion through the songs of one of the world's greatest pop stars, Critchley, whose writings on philosophy have garnered widespread praise, melds personal narratives of how Bowie lit up his dull life in southern England's suburbs with philosophical forays into the way concepts of authenticity and identity are turned inside out in Bowie's work. The result is nearly as provocative and mind-expanding as the artist it portrays.
    Critic Reviews:
"Critchley lovingly unearths profoundly deep cuts from every Bowie era in a short sharp book worthy of its subject. Miraculously doubles up as an introduction to philosophy." (Gruff Rhys, member of Super Furry Animals)
"The most powerful and provocative philosopher now writing..." (Cornel West)
    "A truly inspiring voice..." (PopMatters)

the best music culture theory book that exists
the deepest and riveting piece of music criticism i have ever read. and i sm occasionally in the music press. to come even close we're looking at work like modris eksteins rite of spring or gesualdos death in five voices or david byrnes how does music work. but everything mentioned and critchleys book as well are singularities and have only the faintest similarities insofar as they are narrative meditations about music. this is avery special book.

What about Matthew Modines performance did you like?
Modine is a fine actor and reads it well. I didn't like all the chapter breaks that told you where you were, what date, etc. They were too frequent, interrupted the flow.

    Title: You Might Remember Me
Subtitle: The Life and Times of Phil Hartman
    Author: Mike Thomas
    Narrator: Corey Snow
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 35 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-18-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 226 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Beloved TV comedic actor Phil Hartman is best known for his eight brilliant seasons on Saturday Night Live, where his versatility and comedic timing resulted in some of the funniest and most famous sketches in the television show's history. Besides his hilarious impersonations of Phil Donahue, Frank Sinatra and Bill Clinton, Hartman's other indelible characters included Cirroc the Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer, Eugene the Anal Retentive Chef and, of course, Frankenstein. He also starred as pompous radio broadcaster Bill McNeal in the NBC sitcom NewsRadio and voiced numerous classic roles - most memorably washed-up actor and commercial pitchman Troy McClure - on Fox's long-running animated hit The Simpsons. But Hartman's seemingly charmed life was cut tragically short when he was fatally shot by his troubled third wife, Brynn, who turned a gun on herself several hours later. The shocking and headline-generating turn of events stunned those closest to the couple as well as countless fans who knew Phil only from afar.
Now, for the first time ever, the years and moments leading up to his untimely end are described in illuminating detail through information gleaned from exclusive interviews with scores of famous cast mates, close friends and family members as well as private letters, audio/video recordings, extensive police records, and more.
Both joyous tribute and serious biography, Mike Thomas' You Might Remember Me is a celebration of Phil Hartman's multi-faceted career and an exhaustively reported, warts-and-all examination of his often intriguing and sometimes complicated life - a powerful, humor-filled and disquieting portrait of a man who was loved by many, admired by millions and taken from them far too early.
    Members Reviews:
I Will Remember You Phil Hartman
You Might Remember Me: The Life and Times of Phil Hartman is a meticulously researched book that gives a clear and affectionate although unbiased look at Phil Hartman's life.
I was especially taken with his early days and could relate easily as another California kid growing up surfing and hanging out--with the knowledge that Hartman managed to have a ringside seat and know a lot of the musical icons of the end of the 20th century personally.
Mike Thomas hits the nail on the head in his narrative about Hartman's learning to inhabit his characters as he grows up. Hartman is ultimately another one of those successes who are only really alive when they become someone other than themselves.
Listening to this book was like being there in many ways, Hartman was always the good looking glue of whatever he was involved in and gave 100% to his work. His personal life could never match his romantic expectations and that comes across clearly. I would have liked to know more about his personal life but this book focuses extremely well on how his work life and career developed in the unforgiving arena of comedy and television. The book builds a portrait of a complex man who never could quite figure out what the rainbow was that he was chasing until the night it all came apart with his murder.
Narrator Corey Snow does an excellent job of delivering a plethora of voices that are believable from Paul Rubens to Jan Hooks to Dana Carvey.

    Title: American Titan
    Subtitle: Searching for John Wayne
    Author: Marc Eliot
    Narrator: Pete Larkin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-14
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 20 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
From the veteran New York Times best-selling biographer comes a major, in-depth look at one of the most enduring American icons of all time, "the Duke", John Wayne.
As he did in his best-selling biographies of Jimmy Stewart and Clint Eastwood, acclaimed Hollywood biographer Marc Eliot digs deep beneath the myth in this revealing look at the most legendary Western film hero of all time; the man with the distinctive voice, walk, and demeanor who was an inspiration to many and a symbol of American masculinity, power, and patriotism.
Eliot pays tribute to the man and the myth, identifying and analyzing the many interesting contradictions that made John Wayne who he was: an Academy Award-winning actor associated with cowboys and soldiers who didnt like horses and never served in a war; a Republican icon who voted for Democrats Roosevelt and Truman; a white man often accused of racism who married three Mexican wives. Here are stories of the movies he made famous as well as numerous friends and legendary colleagues such as John Ford, Maureen O'Hara, Natalie Wood, and Dean Martin.
A top box-office draw for more than three decades - starring in 142 films from Stagecoach and True Grit, for which he won the Oscar to The Quiet Man and The Green Berets - John Wayne's life and career paralleled nearly the entire 20th century, from the Depression through World War II to the upheavals of the 1960s. Setting his life within the sweeping political and social transformations that defined the nation, Eliot's masterful portrait of the man they called Duke is a remarkable in depth look at a life and the "American Century" itself.
    Members Reviews:
Poor writing and worse editing. Don't bother.
DON'T BUY THIS BOOK. My wife bought the Kindle edition of this book because i am a fan of John Wayne's movies. While i greatly appreciate the thought and love my wife, I greatly appreciated the gift.
Now that I have done my duty as a husband, I will say the book was a HUGE disappointment. Eliot is both an overly verbose and poor writer, there is not a lot of accuracy in this book. I hope the author did not pay an editor a lot of money to edit this because if he did, Eliot got ripped off as badly as my wife did when she purchased it. I cannot recommend purchasing this unless you need something to help with your insomnia. Exceptionally long sentences that seem to be incomplete in many places will soon lull the reader to sleep from simple boredom.
Poorly Researched-Not to be Relied On
Full of errors, Eliot seems to have done little research and obviously did not screen Wayne's films. (nobody who actually watched "Three Godfathers" would state that the baby was a girl!). Add to that the obligatory left-wing p.c. horror Eliot expresses at Wayne's politics and what results is an embarrassing mess. I give it two stars only because there's nothing better has been published to date.
    Keep on Searching
Last spring Scott Eyman's biography of John Wayne was published. I bought it and read it over several days. As a long-time Wayne fan (well, at least of his movies and not his politics) I found the book to be very well written and probably the closest we'll ever have to being the definitive Wayne bio (although one written in 1997 by Randy Roberts and James S.

    Title: No Land's Man
Subtitle: A Perilous Journey through Romance, Islam, and Brunch

    Narrator: Aasif Mandvi
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-04-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 655 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
"My father moved our family to the United States because of a word. It was a word whose meaning fascinated him. It was a singularly American word, a fat word, a word that could only be spoken with decadent pride. That word was . . . Brunch! 'The beauty of America,' he would say, 'is they have so much food, that between breakfast and lunch they have to stop and eat again.'"
    from "International House of Patel"
If you're an Indo-Muslim-British-American actor who has spent more time in bars than mosques over the past few decades, turns out it's a little tough to explain who you are or where you are from. In No Land's Man Aasif Mandvi explores this and other conundrums through stories about his family, ambition, desire, and culture, stories that range from dealing with his brunch-obsessed father, to being a high-school-age Michael Jackson impersonator, to joining a Bible study group in order to seduce a nice Christian girl, to improbably becoming America's favorite Muslim/Indian/Arab/Brown/Doctor correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart.
This is a book filled with passion, discovery, and humor. Mandvi hilariously and poignantly describes a journey that will resonate with anyone who has had to navigate his or her way in the murky space between lands. Or anyone who really loves brunch.
    Editorial Reviews:
Editors Select, November 2014 - After years of watching him bait crooked politicians and naïve bigots into falling over their own stupidity and ignorance, I knew Aasif Mandvi as the hilariously deadpan "Senior Middle East/Muslim/All-Things-Brown Correspondent" on The Daily Show. So, when I got the opportunity to listen to his new memoir No Land's Man, I was sure it would be an entertaining experience. And while this held true and I found myself consistently laughing out loud at passages, what really surprised me was how unique his story is and how well he tells it. Mandvi possesses that rare, Sedaris-like ability to tightrope walk between moments of humor and poignancy, relaying one man's journey to find his place in both a funny and moving way.
    Critic Reviews:
"It always bothered me that Aasif was more than merely funny - he's also a great actor. Now I've learned he's an amazing storyteller as well, and I am furious . . . but also grateful. Aasif's movement between cultures and genres is what makes him and his story singularly funny, poignant, and essential." (John Hodgman, author of The Areas of My Expertise and More Information Than You Require)
    Members Reviews:
    Witty and Thoughtful
In No Lands Man, actor Aasif Mandvi recounts his experiences growing up and feeling like an outsider. He moved from Bradford, England to Tampa, Florida with his family when he was sixteen, which was quite a culture shock. In No Lands Man, Mandvi talks about his experiences as a multicultural actor, leading up to his breakout role on The Daily Show.
It seems like every week there is a new celebrity memoir, though Aasif Mandvis wasnt really on my radar until recently. You may be familiar with Mandvi from The Daily Show, where he is the Senior Middle East correspondent. I must admit I dont really watch the show, but I looked up Mandvi on IMDB and found Im familiar with his work in The Proposal and The Internship.

    Publisher's Summary:
The number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Day John Died delivers another dramatic installment in the lives of the Kennedys - including new details about JFK, Jr., his relationship with his mother, his many girlfriends, and the night of his tragic death.
Critically acclaimed author Christopher Andersen is a master of celebrity biographies - boasting 16 best sellers, among them These Few Precious Days, Mick, and William and Kate. Now in his latest thrilling book, untold details of the life and death of JFK, Jr., come to light, released in time for the 15-year marker of the tragic plane crash on July 16, 1999.
At the heart of The Good Son is the most important relationship in JFK, Jr.'s life: that with his mother, the beautiful and mysterious Jackie Kennedy Onassis. Andersen explores his reactions to his mother's post-Dallas suicidal depression and growing dependence on prescription drugs (as well as men); how Jackie felt about the women in her son's life, from Madonna and Sarah Jessica Parker, to Daryl Hannah and Carolyn Bessette, to his turbulent marriage; the senseless plane crash that took his life; the aftermath of shock, loss, grief, and confusion; and much more. Offering new insights into the intense, tender, and often stormy relationship between this iconic mother and son, The Good Son is a riveting, bittersweet biography for lovers of all things Kennedy.
    Members Reviews:
    Glance at JFK Jr. life
Disappointing story about JFK Jr., sells him short on his life story, he had ADHD, Graves Disease, and reckless. Made the case that it was inevitable, he would die, because he was unfocused . More information about his wife. My personal opinion is that John decision to run for the Senate, was the deciding factor for his death.
    This book contains nothing original
This book is just a compilation of information from other books written about the Kennedy's and written by JFK, Jr.'s ex girlfriend, coworker and at least one friend, though possibly Rob Littel's book as well. If you have read those books, you have read this one.
    Robertson Dean makes this book
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it is a good tabloid story for Kennedy fans and Robertson Dean is wonderful
What about Robertson Deans performance did you like?
His delivery was spot on. Great pacing, great consistency in Jackie's voice and he didn't overdo it by trying to hard on the females. Great sound quality, good editing.
    Interesting but repetitive
Good narrator, interesting insight, but repetitive writing. The author repeated phrases and plot points like a bad comedian repeating a joke that flat lined.
    Good Son, Bad Book
What would have made The Good Son better?
The author posited complete knowledge of intimate conversations all through the book. He needs his view to be more believable. He outed the most salacious things about everyone without substantial backing, How he knew about actions, complete conversations, thoughts etc. was/is totally questionable.
Has The Good Son turned you off from other books in this genre?
Unless I know the author, yes.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Robertson Dean?
    Yes
    You didnt love this book...
