    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-14-17

    Publisher's Summary:
Something strange is afoot at the Paris Opera House. When staff and performers spot a skeleton dressed in dinner attire, tales of the opera house ghost begin to surface.
The new manager dismisses the stories as overactive imaginations, but chaos ensues, and encounters with the phantom become increasingly frightening. Who is the mysterious phantom that haunts the theater after the crowds have left for the night? How can he enter locked rooms and get from place to place so quickly? What is his connection to the beautiful and talented Christine?
Gaston Leroux injects the perfect combination of gothic tension and horror in his classic tale of the dark and foreboding. First published in 1909 in serial format, The Phantom of the Opera quickly became one of the most beloved gothic tales of the Victorian era, earning its place as one of the greatest stories of all time.

    Absolutely, thrilling...
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux is quite a tale. Dark, intense, and dramatic. Every page builds the momentum. Suspenseful and cleverly written. The Phantom Ghost is not a ghost at all. But a mere mortal. Yet he brings upon fear and darkness at the Opera. Love, jealous, and murder. This was an interesting piece of literature. I was in love. It had everything I expected and more. Gaston Leroux was a great writer. His words lured me deeper into his fictional world, The Phantom of the Opera. Music, death, and drama at the center. Absolutely, fascinating to read. I recommend this book to readers worldwide.
I bought this copy from my local bookstore.
A classic that never gets old
This is one of those stories that is such a classic that it gets periodic remakes in every medium. It's been retold in books (Susan Kay), masterfully parodied (Terry Pratchett), turned into a movie, a musical, you name it.
Despite his inhuman visage, Erik's tortured tale of love and suffering speaks to us all.
This is also one of the oldest books I know of to employ the "I am a researcher presenting my notes and interviews about events that really happened" plot device, and it carries that off well too, particularly as it helps to preserve some of the mystery surrounding Erik.
He was guilty of not a few horrors
I really struggled with this book in a lot of ways. The hero and heroine are both such ninnies that I really couldn't root for either of them. Christine is meant to be angelic, but the way she leads on the phantom seems quite contemptible. She does it to save her life, of course, but it still seems heartless and cruel (which reaction, I suppose, proves that Erik, the phantom, is the most sympathetic character in the story). Raoul, often described as a lad or boy or child, was hard to like also. His mercurial shifts from belief in Christine's innocence to accusing her of every possible betrayal were exhausting to read. And I have a hard time with a hero who, within the same scene, bursts into a "mad laugh" only to follow it by bursting into tears. Not that he's the only one who bursts into laughter or tears at every turn. All the characters did it. I was really hoping someone would just react by nodding occasionally, but alas, every scene involved extremes of some sort.
The structure of the book was not something I enjoyed either. The conceit--that the narrator is reconstructing these events from diaries, reports, journals, etc.--made for a very uneven reading experience.

Yet, with all his deformity, there is a certain grace and agility in him and he possesses an endearing passion...and when the gypsy Esmerelda stands between his two executioners, Quasimodo makes the ultimate sacrifice.

    A deserved classic
Another tragic work full of love, passion, tears and horror from a true master prose. It took me years to get around to reading it, I thank God that I finally did
    Five Stars
    Have always enjoyed reading Hugo
    Who is Quasimodo?
Great introduction to Quasimodo for young readers. My fourth grade grandson can read in his own
A great and powerful book by a great and powerful author.
It is always worthwhile to read a classic novel. Victor Hugo is among the four of five greatest writers of all time.
    Four Stars
Good read but skimmed thru most of the obsessive detail about city of Paris description and Paris architecture, etc.

    Title: Thus Spoke Zarathustra
    Author: Friedrich Nietzsche
    Narrator: Alastair Cameron
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-01-17
    Publisher: A.R.N. Publications
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 11 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Thus Spoke Zarathustra is the fictional account of the travels and teaching of the prophet Zarathustra. One of the more controversial aspects of Nietzsche's work is that he puts forth the idea of human evolution and the transformation of modern humans from their ape-like ancestors. Nietzsche inserts a number of controversial ideas into his fictional account of Zarathustra, including some reoccurring themes such as the superman, a self-mastered individual who has achieved his full power and promotes the idea that the current state of human development is not the end result.
Thus Spoke Zarathustra is both a work of philosophy and a fictional tale that will appeal to those looking for entertainment that will also spur deep thought.

    My introduction to Nietzsche
Until this book, I had put off reading for nearly 50 years any of Nietzsche's works, expecting that it would be worth my while one day to see how he supports his contention that our diety will cease to exist and subsequently leave a vacuum to be filled by a human being who will appear among us and set things right, surpassing all the myriad limitations previously known to plague mankind. I expected much more from this book then I found. On the whole, "Thus Spoke Zarathustra" failed to enlighten me. I think this book says less about the ills of society then it reveals a desperately lonely individual, plagued by narcissistic tendencies. I suppose he would will fit the description of a hero for many of our alienated youth today. Was it worth my time? â Only in so far as to have satiated my curiosity about Nietzsche.
    Screw Nietzsche
I'm not sure why this would be Nietzsche's most celebrated work. I gathered that he is a butt hurt former catholic all pissed off about his religious upbringing. A bunch of whining in religious prose.

Around the World in 80 Days
Everyone knows the basic story, but reading the book was quite painful and not enjoyable for a middle schooler who chose it from the summer reading list. It's written in a stuffy, 19th century style, which is great if one enjoys such writing. As an adult, I love the stuff, but it really was hard to wade through the formal prose and starchy descriptions. I don't recommend modernizing it, although that would introduce it to a generation that will otherwise not make an effort.
    Accompanies the Video Trip
Having seen this television series of Michael Palin's trip, this is a nice way to refresh the memory. I understand that the book follows the video series very closely. I intend to read it at some time. I got it for my late husband and he did enjoy reading it. Mr. Palin's observations of the world were very interesting.
David Niven was a perfect choice.
Wonderful book. It evoked my memories of the original movie I watched in younger days. It is also quite a lesson in changing perceptions AND realities. It was, after all, written 143 years ago, and the world has changed a bit. Now you can circumnavigate the globe without even an engine (solar airplane), but between Homeland Security, customs officials everywhere, infrastructure maintenance failures and other modern inconveniences, Mr. Fogg's record might beat yours if you attempted the same route. I wonder if TripAdvisor could set me up . . .
    Good translation and nice themes
One of the more simple works of Verne in my opinion. Good translation and nice themes. The characters themselves didn't attract me a great deal. Fine quality book and a fairly easy read.
    I Always Love This One
I give it five stars. It's always a favorite. I read it with my eleven year old in our homeschool. She said, "It's not my favorite book, but it's okay." I, on the other hand, love the beauty behind the message of Mr. Fogg's journey. It would seem as though there really are some things in life that mean more than glory and riches. ;)

    Five Stars
    Excellent prose and captivating story.

    Classic Spanish Theatre
I used Fuenteovejuna as a textbook in my spanish-language theatre class. Even though it was for school and not my own choice, this is an excellent book. It talks a bit about Lope de Vega's (interesting) life, and has a verse translation. The one thing I would say is that don't expect the translation to be word-for-word. Since the original text is in verse, they translated it in verse for staging purposes. But it is an excellent translation. The spanish version is on the left side and english on the right, so as you are reading it you can simply look over if you are unsure of the translation of something.
As far as the play itself, it is a very entertaining play and an inspiring story. In small sections, we staged the whole play and it was very entertaining to watch and perform. This is a classic from Spain's "golden age" and should not be passed up!

    Publisher's Summary:
Note: This is a summary and analysis of The Rebel and not the original work.
The Rebel is a 1951 book-length essay by Albert Camus, which treats both the metaphysical and the historical development of rebellion and revolution in societies, especially Western Europe. Camus relates writers and artists as diverse as Epicurus and Lucretius, Marquis de Sade, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Friedrich Nietzsche, Max Stirner, André Breton, and others in an integrated, historical portrait of man in revolt. Examining both rebellion and revolt, which may be seen as the same phenomenon in personal and social frames, Camus examines several "countercultural" figures and movements from the history of Western thought and art, noting the importance of each in the overall development of revolutionary thought and philosophy.
The work has received ongoing interest, influencing modern philosophers and authors such as Paul Berman and others.
    Members Reviews:
Read the original - forget this one
The review received a "D" grade from me, because it was so empty and didn't present Camus' points with any depth.. Also there were a few grammar and spelling mistakes that were frustrating. Individuals wanting to understand Camus must read the original if they really want to understand him.
