Boston, 1765: In D.B. Jackson's Thieftaker, revolution is brewing as the British Crown imposes increasingly onerous taxes on the colonies, and intrigue swirls around firebrands like Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty. But for Ethan Kaille, a thieftaker who makes his living by conjuring spells that help him solve crimes, politics is for othersuntil he is asked to recover a necklace worn by the murdered daughter of a prominent family.
Suddenly, he faces another conjurer of enormous power, someone unknown, who is part of a conspiracy that reaches to the highest levels of power in the turbulent colony. His adversary has already killed - and not for his own gain, but in the service of his powerful masters, people for whom others are mere pawns in a game of politics and power. I wanted to like it more...
Let me start this review with the preface that I love Johnathan Davis and everything he narrates. That being said, I really wanted to like this book more than I ended up doing. It's a murder mystery (sort of) set in pre-revolution Boston, about a magician Ethan who works as a thief taker. As a murder mystery it's not exactly interesting, it tries to focus more on the magic side of things.
The book was too long and rather repetitive. It wasn't that it reiterated plot points again and again (like some mysteries), but the scenes seemed to repeat. It could easily have been pared down quite a bit. The character's motivations were a little vague, especially Sophira. There were times that it felt like things were happening just so that Ethan could get beaten up more. For a supposedly smart guy, Ethan takes a long time to figure out some seemingly basic plot points. There seems like lots of interesting back story that could be expanded upon in further books, but even on the strength of Johnathan Davis's narration (which is absolutely excellent as always), I'm not sure I'll be getting any of the rest of the series.
    Original, compelling and addictive
"Thieftaker" is not just a modern urban noir supernatural detective story dressed up in a period costume, it is driven by the events and the mindset of the period, which gives it a distinctive and intriguing flavour.
It is driven as much by character as by plot. Our hero is not an easy man but he is one you could learn to care about. The people who threaten or help him (sometimes the SAME people) have motives and emotions of their own that make them much more than plot devices.
The supernatural world is well thought through and skillfully revealed and the plot stands up as a detective/thriller story in it own right.
Jonathan Davis narrates the book with a steady voice that has exactly the right pitch and pace to get the most from this tale.
I've already ordered the next in the series and I have high hopes of it.
A unique blend of history and fantasy
What did you love best about Thieftaker?
Its a historical fiction, but wait, its also an urban fantasy set in historical Boston.

Among inhospitable and unforgiving seas stands Khalakovo, a mountainous archipelago of seven islands, its prominent eyrie stretching a thousand feet into the sky. SONG OF ICE AND FIRE MEETS EARTHSEA
A Song of Ice and Fire meets Earthsea in this highly original and exciting novel set in the Grand Duchy of Anuskaya, an archipelago of bitterly cold islands where flying ships soar on dangerous winds. The Winds of Khalakovo is awesome epic fantasy with a Russian Czarist slant. The narrator nails it and made the prose by Writers of the Future award winner Bradley Beaulieu so interesting and tense.
Life in the bleak islands was already difficult before the wasting disease blighted the land and started killing the inhabitants. No one knows what has caused the blight, or that Prince Nikandr Khalakovo has been afflicted by it. Nikandr has been hiding the illness for months and his betrothed, the strong-willed Atiana Vostroma does not realize that she will marry a dying man who is in love with a darkly beautiful Aramahn woman, Rehada, who keeps many secrets from her aristocratic lover.
Atiana, Rehada, and Nikandr are all strong point of view characters who power the plot of this fast-paced novel full of spectacular imagery and emotional punch. The book is rooted with realistic characters in a harsh world that can only be tamed by the elemental magic practiced by the Landless Aramahn, who specialize in air, earth, fire, water and the stuff of life as they wander the world seeking knowledge and wisdom. Also fascinating were the Matri, the matriarchs of the great families who submerge themselves in freezing water and leave their bodies to navigate the dangerous aether and help guide the wind ships that follow the ley lines that connect the islands.
Winds is filled with twists, turns and palpable danger as Nikandr risks everything to protect a young Aramahn boy, an autistic savant, who may be the key to healing the blight. Atiana struggles to stay loyal to her family and the man she is supposed to marry.

another great book by Dave Duncan
    Any additional comments?
When i first started this series i was skeptical about whether i would like it or not because i generally don't like light fantasy. However, I am happy to say i was wrong about this particular series. After reading and enjoying book 1 i was excited to read book 2 and it didn't disappoint. Again, Duncan impressed me with his well developed and exciting characters, a story that was even better than book 1, and a more complex plot than book 1. This complex plot was especially important to me because i thought one of the few shortcomings of book 1 was a straight forward plot. Also, the narrator mill did another excellent job making the characters come alive with a good range of voices and an inflection that kept one interested. The only problem I had with this book was that i thought that the main character, inos, was starting to seem airheaded. This was entertaining at points, but at other times her seeming utter lack of comprehension was obnoxious. Despite this slight issue, i thoroughly enjoyed this novel and am planning on buying book 3 very soon.
Promising story, but no real progress
The story hooks you from the beginning, promises to be great, gives goals and questions that need to be answered, but never makes real progress in answering the questions - each book ends without progress being made in answering the very first questions asked - to me, it seems an exercise in frustration; others might enjoy this style of writing. This series, though it has a very promising story, is just not for me. If you like stories where the answers all come towards the end, this series will be ideal for you. If you like stories where the answers get revealed throughout the story, this might not be ideal for you.
    Excellent sequel.
An excellent read. It's a bit split as it follows both convergent stories of Rap and Inos.
    Excellent story, great narrator.
Fun fairy tale with excellent characters, a fascinating magical world with all kinds of different races (Imps, Jottnar, Fawns, Goblins, Trolls, Faeries, Jinn, and who knows how many more, each with a unique look and racial characteristics) a rollicking storyline with lots of twists and turns. I'm buying the whole series of 4 books.

    Great story, awful narration
What made the experience of listening to Night Shift the most enjoyable?
I love the fast pace of the story. Never a dull moment and easy to keep paying attention to the story for long periods of time.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I liked Jill be because she is strong but flawed. She is a hero but not a perfect person and it's easy to sympathize with her character.
Would you be willing to try another one of Joyce Beans performances?
Joyce Bean is one of the worst narrators I have ever listened to and it's a shame that she has ruined otherwise good books with her voice and over pronunciation of words. When I purchased this book I didn't think to check to see who the narrator was. If I had known it was JB then I would have just read the book instead of listened to it. She is the reason I didn't give this book a 5 star rating.
    Well written, well read
The story will leave you wanting more (thank God this is a part of a series) and the narrator really takes an ownership to where you really feel you are listening to Jill Kismet.

Once in Ninavel the mission proves more treacherous than even Dev could have imagined. Betrayed by allies, forced to aid their enemies, he and Kiran must confront the darkest truths of their pasts if they hope to save those they love and survive their return to the Tainted City.
    Editorial Reviews:
The second in Courtney Schafer's enchanting and engrossing Shattered Sigil fantasy series, The Tainted City follows familiar protagonists Dev and Kiran, now prisoners, through a complicated web of magical and political machinations, as they fight to save themselves and the people they love in an increasingly dangerous world....
Andy Caploe's deep, gruff voice, and dramatic performance enhance the tensions inherent in this action-packed audiobook; Caploe imbues the text with a serious, high-fantasy feel, deftly navigating through Schafer's skillfully constructed world. Listeners will find themselves swept away to a place - and a story - which feel foreign, and exciting, and very, very real.

Excellent, and now I want the next one!
    Any additional comments?
I found this to be a worthy follow-up to the Whitefire Crossing. Lots of interesting and not altogether predictable things happen and the characters continue to develop nicely. I was particularly fascinated with the interplay between Dev and Kiran in the later parts of the book, when theyve got this barrier between them and yet they somehow remain connected. There were a couple of nice twists toward the end - I got a little worried about how she was going to resolve it but the ending quite pleased me and made me look forward to the next one. This book asks an interesting question: Are we the sum of our experiences or only the sum of our memories of our experiences? Im looking forward to finding out how she will answer this in the third book.

Lens of the World, published in 1990, is the first book in R.A. MacAvoys LENS OF THE WORLD trilogy. Its a coming-of-age story which reminds me of several fantasy epics Ive read, especially Ursula K. Le Guins EARTHSEA series, Robin Hobbs FARSEER saga and, more recently, Patrick Rothfusss KINGKILLER CHRONICLE.
Those are some big names Ive used as comparison. Can MacAvoy really stand up to that? Mostly yes. Nazhuret is not quite as likable as FitzChivalry Farseer and not quite as interesting as Kvothe, but hes an appealing hero, as are a couple of the other main characters such as Nazhurets enigmatic teacher, Powl, who lives in a strange round building and teaches Nazhuret to sit still, think, speak several languages, dance, fight, and appreciate optics, linguistics and other academic subjects. Then theres a girl named Charlin who Nazhuret thinks he loves, though hes not sure. (Sexuality is confusing to Nazhuret since he was raped by his schoolmasters when he was a boy.) And finally theres Arlen, a thief who remembers Nazhuret from his school days, and the red-headed King whom Nazhuret meets later in the story and to whom we assume hes writing.
Plot-wise, Nazhurets story is always interesting and I often found it absorbing, but I wouldnt say that it quite reaches the level of exciting. For nearly half of the book hes being educated before he sets off on his own and works odd jobs such as farm hand, janitor, and bouncer. He encounters bar fights, murderers, a wedding, a werewolf, a dragon, and makes friends with a dog. All this time, of course, were aware that hes casually addressing the king as he writes his autobiography, so this makes us realize with anticipation that something important is going to happen. Toward the end we find out why his teacher is so interested in him, and learn that perhaps Nazhuret has a destiny. Other revelations about Powl and Arlen made me want to read on.
This doesnt sound too much different from many other coming-of-age fantasy novels Ive read, but what makes Lens of the World stand out is R.A. MacAvoys style, and this is why Ive compared her to Hobb and Le Guin.

    An enjoyable listen
What did you like best about this story?
The plot was straight-forward, easy to follow, and was enjoyable to listen to.
    Any additional comments?
If you are looking for an enjoyable story, you might like this one. It is not full of intrigue, or complicated, or full of politics. It is a simply story, simply told. Having said that, I would say that I enjoyed listening, both to this book, and to the following two books in the series. The story isn't complicated; It doesn't arrive at the end you would think it will come to from the beginning, but the ending was not terrible either. All in all, I enjoyed listening to it.
Before you decide, though, please find out what other reviewers think. All things aren't for everyone. I always like recommending that the reader considers other reviews before deciding.
    Book of jobe
I strongly suspect that this is a rewrite of some ancient Incan story, mixed with the book of jobe, with a pinch of fantasy soul translocation. Well written and a whole lot of fun. I have to get up tomorrow at 5.30am, it is now 11pm and I am downloading the next book. Don't you just hate those sort of authors. Elol
    Engaging story
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is the first book in a series that takes you through a world of swords and sorcerers that is well thought out, with characters that grow on you. Overall, I enjoyed the story, but felt the pace moved a bit slow.
Without giving away any spoilers, by the start of the second book I was seeing some obvious plot points that took the characters in the story the entire volume to recognize as important. I am not sure I have the patience to wade through the third volume to see how it all ends.
Donald Corren does a great job with the narration.
If you are a fan of the "swords and sorcerers" genera, you will probably enjoy this series of books.
    Mediocre book depending on taste
I say its mediocre depending on taste because I tend to lean toward more graphic novels with gritty characters. This book has a character with scruples & that plays a part in the overall book. I don't think I will end up reading the other 3 books after this because I'm in the Cornwell, Martin, Ambercrombie type of violence & character depiction. I will give KUDOS to the author writing a enjoyable book while avoiding mass violence (considering everyone is running around with swords) & the language is not vulgar at all...

The Princess series finale, a friend gone bad
Jim Hines's Princess series is enjoyable light fantasy, the sort of thing that will appeal to fans of the early Xanth series (before Piers Anthony got really skeevy), but with more self-awareness. The first book was novel mostly for the premise: Cinderella, Snow White, and Sleeping Beauty turned into real, flesh-and-blood characters, not fairy tales but actual princesses with plausible backstories with just enough connection to the "fairy tale" version to make it understandable how the legends started.
The next two books were basically continuations of the adventure, adding the Little Mermaid and Red Riding Hood to the mythos.
In the fourth and last book in the series, there's little adaptation or subversion going on; it's just the final adventure of our three heroines, with some revelations about little details that have been running throughout the series (like just why is Danielle/Cinderella able to talk to animals?), and a resolution, of sorts, to the unfortunate Talia's crush on Snow.
Snow White, the flirty sorceress who's been the "fun" third of the trio for the past three books, becomes the Big Bad in this one, corrupted by a demon through the power of her mother's magic mirror. All of a sudden she's turning everyone evil, destroying armies, and toppling kingdoms. Danielle and Talia have to go after her, with the question hanging throughout the book being whether they'll be able to save Snow without killing her.
I won't say anything about the ending, other than that it was not unexpected, and I felt it was satisfying without being a cop-out.
There are a lot of magical battles, including battles of wits with faeries. While, as with previous books, it was rather AD&Dish at times, I think Hines made the action and the magic consistent enough for his setting without making me hear dice rolling in the background.
While this is the last book in the series (for now), there is certainly potential for Hines to continue the series in the future if he chooses to do so, and I would probably read them.
The Princess books wouldn't make my Best Fantasy list, but they're fine, enjoyable adventures with a surprisingly detailed amount of worldbuilding and character development. The Snow Queen's Shadow brings it to a bittersweet conclusion; I would definitely recommend reading the previous books first.
Imaginative twist on happy ever after
Mr. Hines has a wonderful sense of slightly twisted humor that gives us a what if look at the fairy tales. The story is captivating and the characters are very real. I love stories with a twist, and the author does not disappoint!

Hard not to get pulled in
This book started out rough, Anna attitude is tough to handle at times, but about an hour into it, the book got a lot better. The story took off and I was hooked, it was just a rough start. Honestly though I am not sure how many more books they can continue to write in this series without really ruining the entire storyline.
Decent Transition Story for the Series.
I was wondering where this series was going to go next. This book is a good transition story for the series as a whole. Quite Enjoyable.
This series is becoming a winner
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would be willing to recommend this book to anyone who reads fiction. I had no interest in the vampire genre at all until I read a book by Jeanne C. Stein. She is the one who got me interested in the genre and her books are still the best.
Have you listened to any of Dina Pearlmans other performances before? How does this one compare?
Dina Pearlman has read all the books in this series and it is clear that she is getting a better grip on the characters in each new book. This is her best yet.
    Any additional comments?
This series may not have many installments to go and that is a real shame.
    IT JUST KEEPS GETTING BETTER....
Would you listen to Haunted again? Why?
Yes, I have the entire series and had to listen to them all right before this one came out. When I find a series I enjoy I will listen to it often, and this is one of them.
    Any additional comments?
Ana continues to grow into her powers and into the person she will become. I truly have enjoyed all the different paths her life has taken through out each story, and am looking forward to the next story.
    Slow
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
It was Ok, the story was very slow.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Predictable

    Publisher's Summary:
I stopped believing in monsters long ago. But I knew I wasn't imagining things when I found one in my kitchen baking muffins. I'd seen him before: lurking in my closet, scaring the crap out of my five-year-old self. Turns out that was a misunderstanding, and now Maurice needs a place to stay. How could I say no?
After all, I've always been a magnet for the emotionally needy, and not just in my work as a wedding planner. Being able to sense the feelings of others can be a major pain. Don't get me wrong, I like helping people - and non-people. But this ability has turned me into a gourmet feast for an incubus, a demon that feeds off emotional energy. Now, brides are dropping dead all over town, and my home has become a safe house for the supernatural. I must learn to focus my powers and defeat the demon, before he snacks on another innocent woman and comes looking for the main course.

    Quirky with Unusual Characters.
Right away I knew this would be a good book. I was engaged with the silliness right from the beginning. I loved finding out what monster was coming next in the story. There are both good monsters and evil monsters, the trick is to figure out who is who. There's also a sexy guy that is all kinds of delish and I think there is promise there. Overall a fluffy story. ***spoiler*** there was a rape scene at the end that was a bit disturbing and then glossed over a little too much. I did think the heroine was a little naïve, not to check on her friends when she knew a monster was targeting them. A fast pasted audio that made the day go by super-fast. Narrator is good and I will be defiantly getting the next book in this series.
    Thank you Audible
So this was actually a whim buy for me. Audible had it on a list of recommended books for me. I can not tell you how happy I am to have started this series. I have now read/listened through book 3. I think it is now one of my favorite series. A lot of times when reading/writing reviews we say new and interesting idea. I can actually say that this is one of the most inventive books I have read in years. It is a fun paranormal book that is not the same old vampire/warewolf/kick butt heroines that all the books seem to center around. There is no love triangle either which is also a fantastic change.
How many time are you going to get to read about a lovable closet monster. It is a nice change of pace to read about random and different "monsters". I don't think that they even once mentioned vampires. Maurice the mothering hen closet monster, Iris the quiet flower loving Yeti, Bruce the pygmy dragon, and Milo the fennec fox made this book well worth the read all on their own.
To make it even better the main character kind of reminds me of Stephanie Plum and Jane Jamison. She is funny and quirky and in way over her head most of the time. Through help from new friends and old she seems to find a way to make it through. Plus whats not to love when a line like "what if everything Andrew was saying was a wheelbarrow full of manure from a flying circus elephant" There were a couple lines like that through out the book that not only cracked me up but stuck in my head.
I also like that there is romance in the book but it is not the main story line or even the secondary story line. It is interwoven in the story with out over taking it.
