Baldie of the Week: Eddie James

For over thirty years, Eddie James has performed comedy skits and improv on thousands of stages all over the world, acted in hundreds of short films and skits viewed by countless millions, and yet he is still brought to tears almost every day when he gets letters and emails from fans far and wide describing the personal impact The Skit Guys’ skits and short films have had on others' lives. In addition to being one half of The Skit Guys, Eddie starred in The Skit Guys’ first feature film, FAMILY CAMP, a faith-based family comedy, which released in theaters across the U.S. on May 13, 2022 and ranked as the No. 1 new family movie during its opening weekend. Eddie has co-authored over a dozen publications with Tommy Woodard, including their latest book about friendship, “Smells Like Bacon.” Eddie lives with his wife and two daughters in Sachse, Texas, and is a creative consultant and online pastor at The Cross Church in Wylie, Texas.

National Celebration: April 11, International Be Kind to Lawyers Day

International Be Kind to Lawyers Day, falling on April 11 this year, is all about showing the lawyers in our lives the love and respect they deserve. A 2018 poll by Gallup found that lawyers received pretty average ratings for their honesty and ethical standards (51%). Yes, lawyers find themselves in the middle of many sticky situations but that’s part of their job! Let’s take a moment today to recognize the great work they do to help us out of the messes we get ourselves into.

Baldy of the Week: Eli Coyote Mandel

ELI MANDEL is a comedian, improviser and actor hailing from the small foothill community of O’Neals, CA, just outside Yosemite National Park. He studied theater at UC Santa Cruz before coming to Chicago, where he understudied for The Second City Touring Company and The Second City Mainstage. He also wrote for Saturday Night Live in 2018 and 2019.

I want to highlight him because he wrote a piece for the New Yorker called Bald Manifesto. We do not have to read all 27 articles, but let’s take turns picking out ones we like:

Baldy of the Week: Verne Troyer

Verne Jay Troyer (January 1, 1969 – April 21, 2018) was an American actor, comedian, YouTuber, and stunt performer. He had cartilage–hair hypoplasia and was 2 ft 8 in (81 cm) tall.

The son of Susan, a factory worker, and Reuben Troyer, a repair technician. He had two siblings, Davon and Deborah. He stated that his parents "never treated me any different than my other average-sized siblings. I used to have to carry wood, feed the cows and pigs and farm animals." Troyer was initially raised Amish, but his parents left the faith when he was a child.

His debut role was in “Baby’s Day Out” where he played a stunt-double for a 9-month-old.

His big break was when he got the role of Mini-me in the Austin Powers franchise.

He died in 2018 of alcohol poisoning.

National Celebration: Respect Your Cat Day (March 28)

Did you know today is Respect Your Cat Day? It’s the day to celebrate you and your feline bestie! Your kitty pal has been there when you were happy—your kitty pal has been there when you were sad. Your kitty has, and always will, be there for you. So, this March 28, acknowledge all the hard work your cat puts into being your loyal companion.

National Celebration: March 20 - The Feast of Saint Joseph

The Feast of Saint Joseph is observed on March 20. This is an annual celebration in honor of Saint Joseph. Joseph was the legal guardian of Jesus Christ and was venerated by the Catholic Church as a patron saint of workers.

This day is celebrated during Lent. Typically it is observed by wearing red, fasting, and caring for the poor and needy by providing them with food.

This Day in History: March 23, 1933 - Enabling Act: German Reichstag grants Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers

The Enabling Act allowed the Reich government to issue laws without the consent of Germany’s parliament, laying the foundation for the complete Nazification of German society. The law was passed on March 23, 1933, and published the following day. Its full name was the “Law to Remedy the Distress of the People and the Reich.”

National Celebration: March 7 - Erev Purim

We are celebrating Erev Purim on March 7. Purim Day is calculated based on the Hebrew calendar. It usually falls on the 14th day of the month of Adar. Since it is based on the Hebrew calendar, the dates usually differ in the Gregorian calendar every year. It is a day of celebration to commemorate the victory of the Jewish people over their enemies. The festival is based on the stories from the biblical “Book of Esther.” The word ‘Purim’ translates to ‘Feast of lots.’ The Jewish people were marked for death by the Persian emperor, Ahasuerus.

National Celebration: February 28 - Car Keys & Small Change Day

Car Keys and Small Change Day takes place on February 28 every year. It’s not a day to celebrate car keys and small change, as the name implies. The day is actually a celebration of the place where those seemingly unrelated items are stored: pockets. Yes, the small opening or pouch that forms part of a person’s clothing and is used to carry small items. This necessary but often undervalued part of our clothes has been around much longer than you think and can be traced as far back as 3300 B.C.

National Celebration: International Language Day

International Mother Language Day is observed annually on February 21. The first observance was organized by UNESCO as a celebration of linguistic and cultural diversity. There are over 7,000 languages spoken in the world — this is a large number considering that some languages are better documented and more spoken than others. Many ethnic languages, some of which are still spoken by small groups today, will most likely be extinct in a few decades. This is why International Mother Language Day is so important, as it is part of a larger initiative to revive many communities’ linguistic heritage.

Baldy of the Week: Michael Clark Duncan

National Celebration: Frederick Douglas Day

Frederick Douglass Day is observed on February 14 to celebrate this author, publisher, writer, orator, and most prominent African American abolitionist of his time. Through his public presence, oration, and writing, Frederick Douglass inspired an entire generation of Black Americans to fight for their liberation. Born into slavery in Maryland, Douglass went on to become a lightning rod for abolition in America. His master’s wife made the mistake of teaching him how to read and write, which Frederick Douglass repaid in full by transforming himself into the antithesis of a slave. On his chosen day of birth, we celebrate one of the greatest leaders of America and take inspiration from his example.

Have you ever gotten excited when you open the mailbox and you find a hand written card or letter? We all love getting items in the mail. But why? Perhaps its the time it takes to sit down in our busy lives and write the card. Perhaps it’s the fact that the person was thinking about you when they selected the card. Perhaps it’s the quaintness of receiving something so physical in our age of rapid digital and instant gratification. Whatever the reason, join us on February 7th as we celebrate National Send a Card to a Friend Day!

Hug and Addict or Alcoholic Day

Hug an Addict or Alcoholic Day is observed every year on February 7 in the United States. The day is dedicated to destigmatizing addiction and rehabilitation. Strangers and addicts get together to observe the day understanding how addiction can be cured. Many addicts suffer from stigma and alienation and this is worrisome since companionship and acceptance are important on their road to recovery. With correct resources and empathy, addicts can be free of alcohol and drug addiction, and find their footing after recovering.

This Day in History: 1964 Baskin-Robbins introduces Beatle Nut ice cream

The Beatles were set to perform in the United States for the first-time ever, so it was only right Baskin Robbins would offer a new, special edition flavor in commemoration of this historic event. But, that's not exactly how the story goes. Legend has it, Irv Robbins was confronted about a Beatles-inspired flavor by a Washington Post reporter just five days before the band was expected to arrive (via Mentalfloss). At the time, there had been no talk about releasing a promotional Beatles flavor. So, a flustered Robbins told the journalist that Baskin Robbins would be debuting a new ice cream called "Beatle Nut" in honor of the English rock band.

Somehow, the Baskin Robbins team was able to pull it off and Beatle Nut was created, made, and delivered to Baskin Robbins locations in under a week. Per Decades TV Network, the ice cream was pistachio and walnut flavored with a chocolate ribbon.
