but I wasn't too pleased when I did

It took me a minute to recall this plot, but I wasn't too pleased when I did. It's pretty boring, and, while I read this as part of two different horror collections, and there's really not much in the horror genre to speak of. A man's wife passes and a wildcat tries to take her body from the house at night. It's, honestly, just something that would have happened. Nothing really strange about it.

Surprising Throughout!

Excellent plot twists satisfied and leave you gasping.

Mismatched narrator, good story.

If you've ever had the good fortune to read "The Devil's Dictionary" you know Ambrose Bierce is a very, very funny writer. He is a master of irony and subtle and keen insights on the human condition.

I really wanted to enjoy this book and experience his great sense of humour again, but unfortunately the narrator was a mismatch for the material. I'm not criticising him. I can hear this narrator doing adventure stories with lots of drama. But he did not capture the humour or "feel" of this subtle tale and transmit it to me, the listener.

This story needs to be re-recorded with someone who will give it the treatment it deserves. It could be very funny, if read right.

Not a great selection of her short stories. I would highly recommend getting the complete collection in a book format, as there are some cracking stories, quite unlike Little Women et al, which are fantastic.

Great Short Read

What made the experience of listening to One of the Missing the most enjoyable?

The author was very descriptive with his writing. I felt like I was really there!

Shakespearing Tragedy

Would you consider the audio edition of One of the Missing to be better than the print version?

Yes as I usually do not pick up short stories but when I travel to work it is a long trip so short stories are perfect.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The three characters are equally interesting. They all together make the story complete.

What about John Michaelss performance did you like?

His reading seems to make the story real. I seemed to be an observer.

If you could rename One of the Missing, what would you call it?

The way things, sometimes, just are!

Interesting tie in to my recent battlefield visit.

Had picked this up expecting a discussion of the Civil War battle but found instead it is a 12 page 99 cent short story written in 1889. Story is of a 6 year old boy lost in the woods after playing warrior with his wooden sword. Arises the next morning and sees men crawling through the woods. He climbs on the back of one to play "horsey" only to be tossed off and noticing the man is missing his lower jaw and bleeding profusely. The others are also badly wounded and attempting to crawl to safety. The boy then notices an orange glow in the distance and hears the sound of battle and off he heads in that direction. I will spare you the grim ending but note that Bierce is often reported as "Poe like" in his writing and is known for his disturbing realism.
