This is a great book to support a unit for a Kindergarten/Grade 1 ...

This is a great book to support a unit for a Kindergarten/Grade 1 Social Studies unit on 'Needs and Wants'. The text level is a little more difficult than Needs and Wants by Gilla Olson or Wants Versus Needs - A Place to live by Linda Staniford, but the pictures are very engaging and encourage classroom discussion. I would suggest reading this book after reading the other two books previously mentioned.

Fantastic book!

This is the BEST financial literacy book for kids! It covers the basics extremely well and gives hints of questions to ask the child for his/her feedback. I bought an assortment of financial education books for my grandchildren and this, by far, was the best of them all.

More Explanation Needed

I think more infirmation was need to understand the concept of animal hibernation. It was a little to simplified need more explanation.

This book provides an excellent way to introduce the young student to animals and hibernation science!

The snow-covered evergreens and hardwoods show no sign of animal life because "It is winter." There are no animals in sight because many of them hibernate. We can see bats hanging inside a cave and a squirrel curled up on the underside of a log. When animals hibernate, it is as if they are in "a deep sleep." This is part of their life cycle and they "hibernate to survive the winter." It's not easy to find food in the wintertime because the "snow hides plants and other food." Bears will sleep in dens during the winter only to "wake up and come out" in the spring. A few types of snakes hibernate, but "most ground squirrels" do. In this book the young student can read about and see photographs of animals who are hibernating and they will learn about the cycle.

This book provides an excellent way to introduce the young student to animals and hibernation science. The emergent to early fluent readers will benefit from the large print and the vibrant photographs accompanying the text. Difficult words such as "hibernating" are highlighted in bold throughout the text and explained in the glossary. Each page has a single sentence with the exception of a one page discussion about hibernation at the end. This can be read aloud to a classroom or tackled by the early fluent or confident reader.

In the back of the book there is an index, a glossary, and some interesting "Fun Facts." A typical example is similar to this: "Here are some other animals that hibernate-chipmunks, hamsters, skunks, bats, prairie dogs, frogs, lizards, snakes, turtles, and some insects like bees and ladybugs." This is one in a series of six in the "discovering Nature's Cycles," an interesting nonfiction series you may wish to add to your homeschool or classroom shelves!

New Adventure For Dorothy & Ozma In The Land of Ev

Fresh from reading the 2nd book in the Oz series I jumped right into Ozma of Oz as I was quite curious to see where the story would go with there being such a departure in the 2nd book (The Marvelous Land of Oz) from the 1st (The Wonderful Wizard of Oz).

In this tale, Dorothy returns to the realm of make believe after being swept overboard while on a journey to Australia. She ends up in the far away land of Ev, a place a bit different from Oz, with a talking hen named Billina and she goes on a whole new adventure making new friends along the way, like Tik-Tok, the mechanical man and the Hungry Tiger, whose appetite never seems to be satisfied. She also reunites with some of her old friends as well, like the Cowardly Lion, Scarecrow and the Tin Woodsman, as they team up together with Princess Ozma to rescue the Queen of Ev and her 10 children from the clutches of the evil Nome King.

All-in-all book 3 is a great adventure with somewhat darker overtones than the previous two books that is full of the same whimsical elements and creative ideas common to the earlier tales. Our beloved Dorothy is back in the storyline and this time around her return home to Kansas does not entail a one-way ticket as Ozma retains the means to call her back to Oz whenever she is needed to save the day. A definite must read for any fan of the Wizard of Oz series.

Better and Better

Because The Woggle-Bug Book, is not included as one of the Oz books, Ozma of Oz is considered the third book in the series. Despite the fact that the book is not really about Ozma (introduced in The Marvelous Land of Oz), it gets her name. She doesn't even show up until more than 1/3 into it and hardly takes center-stage after that. The title, though, is probably the greatest weakness of the book. So far, I'm enjoying each of these more than the previous one. Being only three books in, though, that's not saying much.

In a broad, cultural sense, Ozma of Oz may be the most significant of the Oz books. It introduces the character Tiktok, who is considered by many to be the first use of a robot in literature. An actual mechanical person with a mechanical brain. He's a clockwork, as the name implies, and you have to wind him up, but, unlike the Tin Man, he is completely manufactured and his knowledge was "programmed." Of course, we don't really know what that means, but it doesn't really matter.

You loved the movie, your children will love the books

I loved this movie. I've seen it maybe a couple million times. When I was in the Navy, stationed in Italy, I ended up borrowing it from a buddy. I need to track him down and return it, as it's been 9 years. Anyways, Children need to read more these days, and specifically my 6 year old son for his birthday, so I bought this for him and he loves it!

These are great old books I'm so glad they've brought back.

Good book

My girls (4&5) like to watch the Disney movie "The Great Mouse Detective." The movie was based on the Basil of Baker Street books so we started looking for them. My husband reads them a chapter each night before bed. The girls really enjoy the story and so do we. A "simple" mystery that is not to scary, with well thought out characters.

In this book Basil is trying to get to the Grand Canyon to solve a mystery at a hotel but before he can get there he ends up involved in capturing a band of smugglers. This is the last book in the Basil of Baker Street mysterys and my family gives it two-thumbs up!
