    Publisher's Summary:
The world has been fascinated by Hollywood, California, for years. The glamour, the sophistication, the scandal - the world can't help but follow the happenings of this incredible city. It is a city where stories are created, stories that come to life on a screen and allow viewers the chance to escape their everyday lives for a bit. But few people know the story of how Hollywood came to be.
In this beautifully written biography, author Gaelyn Whitley Keith introduces readers to her great-grandfather, H. J. Whitley, "The Father of Hollywood".
Keith uses her research and her great-grandmother Gigi's journal and memoir to recreate the story of H. J.'s life, a story as captivating as any film. You'll travel to the Midwest, interacting with cowboys and Native Americans. You'll cruise around the world. But most importantly, you'll watch the development of an unforgettable community. You'll witness the creation of Whitley Heights. You'll learn how the famous Hollywood sign came to be. And you'll discover just what brought the movie industry to its home. One man was behind it all. It's time to meet The Father of Hollywood.

    Interesting but Gushy
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really wanted to know how Hollywood was established and I got that information. It was a very interesting story from that perspective. However, the telling of H. J.'s and Gigi's personal story was told in a way that seemed to try to romanticize a relationship that was perhaps anything but. Perhaps it was the narration that made it seem particularly gushy at times. The quality of the narration was mediocre and, particularly, the sound quality needs to be improved as the volume goes up and down constantly, needing me to adjust my volume to listen to it quite frequently.
Horrible narration knocks OK book down a peg.
Would you try another book from Gaelyn Whitley Keith and/or Shawna Windom?
Only if I were really mad at myself. The narration was among the worst I've ever heard. And the story, while somewhat interesting, is told as if the main character, Hobart Johnstone Whitley, were far more interesting and important than he actually was. The author is Whitley's great granddaughter, and she is massively over-impressed by her ancestor's life and character. She describes relatively ordinary and common characteristics and actions as if they were profoundly extraordinary.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Father of Hollywood?
I most remember how astonishingly bad the narration was.
Would you be willing to try another one of Shawna Windoms performances?
Absolutely not! Judging by the atrocious narration, I thought for sure this book was read by a family member of the author. I was shocked to see that Windom the list of her narrations on Audible.com. stretches to 13 pages. (Then again, the general quality of the material on that list supports my suspicion that Windom is not a top shelf talent.) Windom reads this book with the intensely annoying habit of frequently using pauses where there should be none. Worse yet, instead of simply taking a quick pause for breath, she inflects her voice as if she were at the end of a meaningful phrase. I can't recall a specific example from the book (I must have blocked it out for sanity's sake), but here's what I mean.

    Ok but
Hours of repeating things. The reader must tell you a least 15 times that Simon is linked to Sony. You told us this in the first chapter. Why do we need to be told this every 30 minutes? Interesting book if you remove everything thats repeated it would last half the time.

Hour of fun for the price of a pint
Look, you know what you are going to get, a funny story read in a funny accent. Its cheap, its 'simples' and really when you think for under 3 quid you can have an hour book that will amuse you on the way to work as you listen to it in your car/ipod you really dont have an excuse not to download it.
    Simples!
What did you like most about A Simples Life?
A funny story and easy listen
Who was your favorite character and why?
Aleksandr, however sergai is a close second
What about Aleksandr Orlovs performance did you like?
    The story line
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
    No
    Any additional comments?
If you need a quick story and a few laughs then this book is just for you. (if you like Meercats)
    Hilarious Fun
I needed cheering up whilst in hospital. This did the trick. Listened to it multiple times. Shame not longer. Great for wanting some easy listening that puts a smile on your face.
    Great stuff!
I could listen to Aleksandr until the meer pups arrive home every day!
The epic story is great and with the asides about other characters very amusing. Sergei comes in for some criticism but that's only to be expected and what we want anyway. Can't get enough of the Meerkats whether it be a book, advert or outshining Coronation Street.
This has given me the opportunity to improve my accent as I've listened to it so much I could narrate myself. One of those audio books that makes you laugh out loud and gets you funny looks when listening to it while driving.

    Publisher's Summary:
Eduardo Saverin and Mark Zuckerberg an awkward maths prodigy and a painfully shy computer genius were never going to fit in at elite, polished Harvard. Yet that all changed when master-hacker Mark crashed the universitys entire computer system by creating a rateable database of female students. Narrowly escaping expulsion, the two misfits refocused the site into something less controversial The Facebook and watched as it spread like a wildfire across campuses around the country, along with their popularity.
Yet amidst the dizzying levels of cash and glamour, as silicon valley, venture capitalists and reams of girls beckoned, the first cracks in their friendship started to appear, and what began as a simple argument spiralled into an out-and-out war. The great irony is that Facebook succeeded by bringing people together but its very success tore two best friends apart.

    Interesting read for sure
Very interesting book. The authors tried to make it as interesting as possible all the time.
Great author, good book, but don't write your history reports based on this.
If you've ever read Ben Mezrich you know what you're getting into. He's a very solid writer who is great at putting forth the actual ideas and feelings of what happened, even if the details aren't exactly accurate. Read this book, enjoy it, but don't expect it to line up exactly with the events.
    blueprint for TheSocial Network
I really enjoyed reading this book. I was amazed at how much the film, The Social Network, stayed true to the source material. Many scenes in the book are mirrored in the movie. But that's because Ben Mazirch has a knack for creating compelling scenes and dropping the reader right into the middle of the action. This gets you turning the pages at a rapid rate, and, despite it being so similar to the film, the book still thoroughly entertains. The story does seem to end abruptly, which is my only gripe. That might have something to do with when it was originally released and what was known at the time about facebook versus the added info to date. In any case, I wanted more -- which, if you think about it, is a compliment. Regardless I still highly recommend this book.
    Great tale of obsession
Great story and good chronological account of not the most pleasant of characters, this true story told of Facebook "founder" Zuckerberg as a prime example of the type of person who becomes extraordinarily successful in American business today. Single minded to the exclusion of many of the normal and good things in life, untrustworthy, oblivious to even valid criticism, highly exploitative of others, carelessly treacherous when deemed useful, he was a weird and difficult but brilliant tech nerd, and nearly pathologically driven to succeed at almost any cost to others and does so to the highest level in the American social networking boom that almost defies logical understanding by anyone over 30 or so to see how a social chatroom could be so desperately important to users and seen as a true revolution by many.
    Entertaining but innaccurate
This book was very interesting it's a fictional book. If you want some entertainment it's an excellent choice but for more accurate information about Facebook I recommend "The Facebook Effect".

    Iron Horses Chug a Bit
Sonja Howle begins IRON HORSES OF THE SANTA FE SOUTHWEST by describing a personal encounter with the Super Chief as it tore across her father's ranch one day. The incident and good use of sound effectscaught my attention in this audio book about the history of the Santa Fe Railroad. From that point, Ms. Howle traces the railroad's history from laying the tracks to the latest 21st Century mergers for the line. She gives the reader a good sense of the business of railroading, and also talks about the Santa Fe Railroad's influence on an important New Mexico commodoty--art. Agents from the railroad commissioned both Native American and Non-Native painters, sculpters, and designers to create everything from curios to sell along platforms, to tableware for Fred Harvey Houses. Under architect Mary Coulton's eye, the designs maintained a unifying theme--to sell people on traveling to the southwest.
The influence is felt to this day among New Mexico artists, as they sell to the crowd that descends from the sky now for summer hiking and music, and winter skiing. In addition, Ms. Howle explores the development of the hotel industry, and the social implications of being a Harvey Girl in one of Fred Harvey's restuarant. IRON HORSES OF THE SANTA FE SOUTHWEST: THE POWER OF VISION is a fascinating look at the politics and sociology of art, business, and daily life as influenced by a corporate giant. Ms. Howle is a master at writing for the ear, so the book is pleasent to listen to and easy to follow. Unfortunately, it can get dry at times, reading like a term paper. She might have considered adding music, and environmental sounds, or using actors to read quotes from people involved in developing, running and maintaining the Santa Fe Railroad. IRON HORSES OF THE SOUTHWEST is a human story that Ms. Howle tells in very human terms. Let's have some people-sounds to complete the image, since we're using the audio medium.
Corporate Social Responsibility and the Santa Fe Railway
Conventional wisdom states that the highest goal of a business is to maximize shareholder return. The only constraint is to do nothing illegal.

    Publisher's Summary:
New York Times best-selling author Jenny McCarthy returns to her comic roots in this candid, wise, and witty look at women, men, sex, romance, heartbreak, love, and how (not) to fake it.
In Belly Laughs, Jenny McCarthy told you what you could really expect when you're expecting. In Baby Laughs and Life Laughs, she gave you the unfiltered ups and downs of motherhood and marriage. Now, in Love, Lust & Faking It, the inveterate truth teller turns the lights on for a funny, often poignant, and no-holds-barred look at the essence of relationships: love and sex.
Jenny explores the intensity of first love, introducing us to Tony, the boy of her teenage dreams, and Tubby, her dirty, sexy, stuffed teddy bear. She takes us on a whirlwind tour of the world of aphrodisiacs and fetishes, explains the importance of playing doctor and other nice and naughty fantasies, and gives thanks for the pleasures of chocolate. And she sets the story straight on STDs, man junk, and lady bits, why we really cheat, why women are master manipulators, the virtues of sex with the lights off, the power of a "loving no", the satisfaction of the perfect booty call, and so much more.
Filled with humorous stories about her own outrageous exploits - from becoming a Playboy Miss October to the pain of getting a discount boob job to meeting Brad Pitt - as well as the lessons she's learned from family, friends, and fans, Love, Lust & Faking It takes on a subject the sex symbol, mother, television star, comedian, and divorcée can be trusted to examine with nothing but unvarnished honesty and earthy humor. Throughout, Jenny reminds us to aim higher, believe in true love, and, most of all, be kind to ourselves. And to have lots of fun and sex - without faking it.

    Title: Reach for the Skies

    Publisher: Random House AudioBooks
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 11 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
"As far back as stories go, pioneers have reached for the skies. In the last two hundred years, they have mastered the air and made the modern world possible. Today they are bringing outer space within our reach. They're inventors and toymakers, amateurs and adventurers, visionaries, dreamers and, yes, crackpots. Some have called them irresponsible, even dangerous. But I have met many of them. I have worked with them, and funded them, and flown with them. I admire them, and trust them, and I think they and their kind are our future.
"In this book I look at the history of flight through the stories and people who have inspired me. These are tales of miraculous rescues; of records made and broken; of surprising feats of endurance and survival, including some of my own adventures, as well as developments in the future of air (and space) travel.
"This is a story of pioneers, and of course it includes the world famous Montgolfiers and the Wright brothers. But I also want to describe some of the lesser-known trailblazers - people like Tony Jannus, who in 1914 created the world's first scheduled commercial flight, flying his passengers over the waters of Tampa Bay at an altitude of just 50 feet; the bird man Leo Valentin, who in the 1950s jumped from 9,000 feet with wooden wings attached to his shoulders; and my friend, Steve Fossett, who dedicated his life to breaking records and having adventures."
    Richard Branson
    Members Reviews:
Fascinating but let down by poor narration
What did you like best about Reach for the Skies? What did you like least?
Branson's passion for flight is palpable in every phrase in this remarkable potted history of manned flight. It is well researched, full of interesting little morsels of information, and structured in as logical a manner as one could hope, given the breadth of material covered. There is a sense, in places, of the sales pitch for Virgin's various airlines and, in particular, Virgin Galactic, but this seems more an honest byproduct of the author's infectious enthusiasm for the subject than calculated self-promotion.
What didnt you like about Adrian Mulraneys performance?
Mulraney's pacing is slow (I listened at 1.25x, which I very rarely feel compelled to do) and the tempo of some phrases awkward. I found him rather jarring, and would avoid choosing another work performed by him, which is unfortunate as he seems to have rather the monopoly on the unabridged audio versions of Branson's work.
    Amazing Overview of Manned Flight
I'm a big fan of Branson's writing style - he means it, it's from the heart and it's how he speaks. This is even more powerful as it's narrated by Sir Dick himself and you can hear his passion and love for the subject in every sentance. Not quite as engaging as 'Losing My Virginity' which is one of the best business audo books available but nevertheless a great yarn about manned flight and his own record-breaking feats and playing as a kid with Douglas Bader! I'm heavily into the history of science and there was a few terrific stories and short bio's that were detaield here. If you're into 'boys toys', 'flying', 'adventure' or simply Brand Branson you'll love it!

    Humor from Hammy
    Any additional comments?
This book is filled with interesting little tales from Hammond. Each one funnier than the last. It very much helps that it it narrated by the Hamster, you get the full feel of his sarcasem and wit that may have been lost if read by someone else. A great light read/listen that is easy to pick up/put down whenever the mood strikes. Very witty, very Hammond.
Enjoyable, funny, insightful. wish it were longer
Richard Hammond is clever and funny, and all his books are also. he shares experiences from TG and his personal life candidly, making it impossible to not relate and laugh. just wish it went on longer, could listen to his stories for days!
    Gotta love English humor.
If you love Top Gear and like the presenters, you'll like this. As expected Richard Hammond. Nice bloke and tells a great story.
Just a few stories from the hamster himself.
It is a fun, short listen, most of which are very enjoyable, and uterrly hilarious.
certainly worth my credit. My only gripe is the editing. I'd prefer unabridged but it's still great.
Good book but shorter then the others by Richard
Would you consider the audio edition of Or Is That Just Me? to be better than the print version?
Yes, by all means because of the narration.
Would you be willing to try another book from Richard Hammond? Why or why not?
Yes i would, I like his humor and his reading.
What about Richard Hammonds performance did you like?
Voice and the way he tells you the story first hand.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    I laughed a few times.
    Any additional comments?

    Language: English
    Release date: 05-11-10
    Publisher: HarperAudio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 76 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
No owner has changed the landscape of sports more than New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. From the moment he bought the team in 1973 for $10 million, Steinbrenner's monomaniacal pursuit was to restore the most fabled franchise in baseball history to its former glory. Today the New York Yankees are worth more than $1 billion and are once again world champions.
Award-winning sportswriter Bill Madden traces Steinbrenner from his early days in Cleveland through his years as a shipping magnate, a Nixon fund-raiser, and a champion horse breeder to the fateful moment when he bought the Yankees, even though his father disparaged George's desire to own a professional sports team as a "hobby".
Over the next four decades, Steinbrenner's tumultuous reign included his epic battles with Billy Martin, Reggie Jackson, Dave Winfield, even beloved Yankee captain Derek Jeter. His ruthless and free-spending tactics made him a lightning rod for controversy, but they also paid off: Steinbrenner's Yankees have won seven championships and remain the gold standard in all sports. In the last few years, with his health declining, the Boss ceded control of the team to his sons, but not before lording over the team's historic transition from the House That Ruth Built to the House That George Built.
Throughout his three decades of covering the Yankees, Bill Madden has cultivated hundreds of sources at every level in the organization, from the many managers and front-office personnel Steinbrenner has fired to the bat boys who are ever present in the locker room. All of them have colorful stories about the man with whom they have enjoyed a love-hate relationship, but it is the Boss himself whose voice rises above the rest. And when Steinbrenner decided to give his final print interview, he spoke to Madden to set the record straight on his extraordinary life and career.

George Steinbrenner was indeed the Last Loin
So misunderstood other teams would begged him to be their owner He was also Generous
Not a biography of a life, but of a baseball owner
Great book that details the Steinbrenner years of the Yankees. Not really a biography as little to nothing is discussed regarding his relationships with his wife and children. Only a brief description of his father and how that may have influenced his life. I enjoyed the book as a book centered on baseball and Steinbrenner's drive to win. Great narration.
    Interesting, yet Polarizing, Personality
This is a 3.5-3.75 rating for me. I read this in print and listened to it on audio concurrently, due to the book's length.
This was an interesting and comprehensive (sometimes a little too comprehensive in the amount of minute detail) look at Steinbrenner's life. There were some parts that seemed to skip around, or jump ahead in time without explaining how someone arrived at the Yankees, and some parts were a bit repetitive. Overall, though, Steinbrenner was an interesting personality and I enjoyed his story. He was quite polarizing, quick to anger and ridicule, yet generous with others. I also learned a few things about baseball that I didn't know before, such as how free agency started.
Very Entertaining Book For ALL Fans of Baseball
    Any additional comments?
Extremely well-written and narrated, I was especially impressed with its objectivity.
