Alive with Quick

Such a great pairing with the recently released PBS Series, "Vietnam". I am a cohort of the main character, but was on the anti-war side of the equation during that time period. It was good to get visibility into the psyche of one who put his life on the line for a war that was doomed from the start. Not being a war-monger, it would have been a boring read for me if the author had drifted off into too much technical jargon. The humor and lighthearted treatment of a subject of such gravity was like..."a spoon full of sugar makes medicine go down". I'll borrow the author's name and part of the title to say it was quick and alive!

Matthew Quick wrote another gem

I read all of Matthew Quick's novels, and his latest is a great one as well. I was a bit reticent since I feel that we have all had our fill of Vietnam, but this story is modern day and has a surprisingly lovable protagonist who tells an amazing story.

Positive and uplifting read

Surprisingly well-written novel. The surprise ending is touching and skillfully done. A very worthwhile read.

Fun, and makes you think.

Quirky main character, a strong narrative voice. A former Vietnam Vet who, after having brain surgery, is focused on righting a wrong from long ago. This book will make you laugh, challenge you about your assumptions, and make you question your own prejudices. I love it that he calls a climate scientist a "weatherman.!"

You will enjoy this book. Unless you are weird.

As I finished this book, I concluded I got my money's worth from reading it. Then again I only paid $ 2.99. I enjoyed the stories about becoming parents, becoming a Ninja and becoming a comedian. Which are essentially all the same thing. The essays on becoming a stand up comic were interesting and challenging. I might try it someday. Currently I only do sit down comedy. Anytime I stand up to tell jokes, someone always yells "Sit Down". If there is any criticism to this book, I will say some of the comedy routines don't translate well into writing and are best viewed and listened to rather than read. Otherwise, it was good to read and I think you will enjoy it. I asked the author to autograph my copy and he ruined my tablet by using a ball point pen to sign it. I can hardly wait for the sequel.

This is a great book for anyone looking to get into the comedy scene. I liked that the book could be read cover to cover or essays could be chosen based on interest. I loved the piece on, "How to Ruin Facebook Posts"

~~Lots of Laughs in this one~~

This book has a lot of jokes in it and is written for ages 4 - 10 and P - 4. The categories include the following: Bird, bug, cat, cow, dinosaur, elephant, fish, food, frog, horse, knock - knock, monkey, pig, rabbit, school, snakes and sports.

There are more knock - knock jokes than any others and they are still as silly as ever.

Lots of entertainment in this one...

Most highly recommended.

Nice Little Book

This little book, which I purchased to help me with a story I'm writing, is a nice start to modern Aussie vocabulary and phrases. I loved the explanation of "Waltzing Matilda", which I've often heard, but, as an American, I didn't know its true meaning and the role it plays in Australian culture. The book itself is very witty and had me smiling most of the time. Another plus is the excellent black and white photos of native animals, art, local attractions, people, and nature scenes, accompanied with expressions and cultural explanations of soothing billabongs and a "conch" studying at the library. Although it's a delightful reference book, I didn't give it five stars because I think it could be better organized and although it contains pictures of natives, they're all Caucasians. I suspect they're the author's family members. It would have been nice to include a few Aborigines or citizens of mixed ancestry. On second thought, however, I've lived in the U.S. for more than six decades and, as far as I know, among the thousands of people that I've encountered in my life, I've personally met only four Native Americans. For a non-fiction book, this little book is delightful and will make any reader crack a few smiles.

irrelevant content

I've only seen the preview pages and as a language teacher find the noncontextual inclusion of multiple photos of pretty girls irrelevant. While the slang descriptions are good the material is poorly organised. This book appears to be more suitable for entertaining light reading than a teaching aid for students of English language.
