Three very captivating and interesting stories

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Theses stories where captivating and include almost every thing you can think about, deceit, murder and secrets are just a few of the things that will intrigue you. The story flows and kept my interest all the way through. You will not be tempted to speed through any part of this book. From the very beginning of the first story I was engaged and listened to the first one twice and replayed some parts of the other two stories. I went to bed thinking and trying to analyze the stories and wondering about how human nature is so complex and people so multidimensional. Yes I highly recommend this audio book.

What other book might you compare Escaping Psychiatry to and why?

I cannot think about any book that this remind me of but I am a big fan of the TV show "Lie to Me", this book remind me of this show.

What aspect of Alan Cookes performance would you have changed?

I have to admit I did not particularly like the narrator but the narration fits the story.

THE best Conan story.

ONE OF REH'S BEST STORIES EVER!! A MUST READ!!

This and Red Nails, that is FREE on Kindle, are two of my favorite stories by Robert E. Howard! If you've never read a REH story you're in for a real treat. This story has a young Balthus and his dog Slasher meeting Conan on a trail and fight the Picts to give settlers time to escape. The young Balthus is REH and the dog is REH's dog Patch. More is told about this in the Robert E. Howard Reader that is another must have for REH fans!

Scholar Damon Sasser says, "Robert E. Howard was born and raised in Texas during the early 1900s, a time not too far removed from the days of the Old Frontier. While growing up, Howard talked to many old timers who still recalled the days when Indians were a threat to the frontiersmen and danger lurked at every turn of the road. Howardâs bookshelf was also well stocked with books on the West and the colorful characters that populated it. So itâs not surprising that he wrote so convincingly of it, particularly during the later years of his short writing career. Even his epic hero, Conan of Cimmerian found himself in some pseudo-Western settings.

âBeyond the Black Riverâ is universally recognized as one of the best Conan stories Howard wrote. Battle Moose, Witches, & Memory Loss

This is a big book of stories, no question about that. Here, Dale T. Phillips has put together 30 tales ranging from horror to fantasy, from scifi to mystery. I quite enjoyed this collection (as you will see by the summaries below). Most of the tales had a little surprise or three for me, which was a delight. With a collection this big, all by 1 author, I always worry that the stories will become predictable. That was not the case with this collection.

My one criticism lies in the lack of female characters. The female characters come in a few flavors: simply referenced but no appearance (dead wives is a common theme) 3; physical appearance but they have no speaking lines 2; the ladies (or just one lady) do have a few lines, but they arent particularly important to the plot 12; the ladies (or just 1 lady) make a difference and are integral to the plot 7 speaking roles, 2 nonspeaking roles. 4 tales lacked women of any sort (unless you count a female moose, which would still leave 3 tales lacking women). It is obvious that the author knows how to write female character (basically, just write them like real people) and I wonder why he doesnt do so more often.

Over all, an excellent collection of entertainment. Yes, I can totally love a book even if it lacks equality kind of like real life and The Hobbit. Briefly, I want to gush a little about my favorite stories in this collection. Two of them are fantasy tales Our New Queen and Froggy Went a Courting. I loved both of these because of the darker natures to the tales. And each is told from a single narrator explaining the situation, so it was very easy to follow. Oddly, each lacked proper names for the characters, which worked just perfectly for short stories. The Tree of Sorrows was also a favorite. It dealt with a heavy topic suicide. In the end, the choice is still left up to the main character, but he is given knowledge that allows him to weigh his choice wisely. This tale, more than the others, shows the authors insight into human nature.

I highly recommend this collection if you are into short story collections. The range of genres promises to keep you entertained and the collection as a whole is far from boring!

The Easiest Man to Kill The narrator was in in WWI, Korean war, and then worked for the government. His daughter died and that starts the downhill decline for our narrator. He blames one man for the losses in his life and his experience in chemical labs lets him take his vengeance. I was surprised who he decided to blame! 4/5 stars

Bootleggers Prohibition Era Billy the Bootlegger is recruiting more muscle. He chooses Davie Donaldson, who knows how to work a boat. His first job is moving whiskey for a rich guy, Cane. But things get complicated when one of the rum runners starts an affair with canes wife. I found the ending a bit predictable and the dialogue was like something out of an old black and white gangster movie. 3/5 stars

I liked these stories because they were short and to the point. No words wasted. Great endings with each story better than the one before. Mr. Wolinsky reads clearly and smoothly.

Great superhero fiction

These stories reminded me a lot of Kurt Busiek's "Astro City," both in their tone and form. Like those books, these stories deconstruct the superhero genre - embracing the trappings of the form (skintight costumes, silly villain names, etc) and imbuing them with a real world sensibility and darkness.

I particularly liked the sexual politics and gender roles at play in these stories.

To be clear, if you've never read anything but 70's era Superman books, these stories are not for you. But anyone who likes the work of Mark Millar, Kurt Busiek, or Warren Ellis should find these six stories a real treat.

Different for me... but I liked it!

I'm a big sci-fi fan, but don't usually go in for superhero fiction, because the whole black-and-white red-white-and-blue thing is boring to me. But these stories weren't like that at all, and got into the gray zones I find intriguing. I took a chance with this one, but I'm glad I did!

Superhero Stories, not for the depressed

So, here's the thing: I understand the desire to take superheroes and turn them into people, and one of the key features of the genre is actually the perversion of tried and tested genre rules to make the story different. What I don't get is the desire to produce six stories about superheroes with the goal of depressing the reader half to death.

Frankly, few of these stories needed someone with powers to justify the plotline. The stories tend to explore sacrifice a lot, but the one thing I got out of them, which I think indicates the way the author's mind was working when he wrote these, is a total lack of hope. There are no happy endings in here.

So, don't read this expecting what it says on the cover. These are not superhero stories, the contents is about some people who can do some stuff that isn't normal and they are about to have their lives ruined. Superheroes don't always win, but there's always hope.

Technically: I can't help but wonder whether the author is better at comic scripts. The narration isn't bad, though the breathy voice isn't exactly perfect for the subject matter, and a female voice would have suited the female roles (of which there are many) better.

The Innocense of Father Brown Vo. 2 (complete classics)

Father Brown brings a Christian voice to his stories but in a quiet manner that is not in your face.

These stories have such a twist and turn that they keep you dangling until the end. It always appears that

the bad guy didn't do it until the end and sometimes he didn't do it. It is my type of mystery -keeps you on your toes, without much blood and gore! This last set of CDs, we purchased for our 95 year old priest who loves reading but has problems with his eyes. He is loving them. I give them 4 stars.

Excellent - The Hammer of God

This, "The Hammer of God", is a short story in audio format. It s an excellent narration of what is, to this point, my favorite "Father Brown" mystery. The short story is written by G. K. Chesterton. The protagonist is Father Brown who was inspired by a friend of G. K. Chesterton. To my knowledge, there are approx. 53 Father Brown stories. This is possibly favorite one. I cannot really tell you why without risking spoiling the story. Thank You...
