What a Way With Words!

You know what I love about Silkstone's writing, besides interesting stories that pull you in and keep you wildly turning pages? She has an incredibly clever way with comic phrasing that just cracks me up. I don't know how she does it...kind of like a wacky Raymond Chandler. Anyway, Cold Case Morphs is funny, touching, and quite compelling. Silkstone has an imagination that just doesn't quit. I'm always looking forward to her next work!

Interesting Choice of Attire

While I liked the comedic action and light-hearted touch along with an interesting story, I had trouble visualizing this strange choice of apparel. It does cut down on the need to look good and be fashion conscious but is so bizarre and would seem to strip the individuality of the wearer, however for a group of private detectives they would be anonymous...might work. No one seemed to be aware of their strange look so I'd guess they were not as unusual as I thought. I'd give it an extra half star for its originality.

I just gave this story another extra half star (for a full star) because I've seen a Morphsuit in action and while they may sound extremely unconventional and far-fetched, they actually exist and are inexplicably popular. Who knew??? I bet you did. Just knowing that and being able to visualize what they look like makes the story a teensy bit more plausible. It is a fun read and I did enjoy it.

We have another division in The Morph outfit, a Cold Case Crime solver set, a Cold, yet warm case.

Cold because it's a case that has been soooo long open,yet warm because of the love.

Zo White appears in this, on her honeymoon,in Ashville,N.C.

We get ghosts,morphs, paparazi,love, and foam!

I suggest this as a weekend read to keep you laughing while on a brain vacation.

Fun Read

Love Barbara's books! One must read all of them to get the full depth of the characters, as each book expands on at least one of the previous book's characters. Set in South Florida and Sarasota areas, where I have lived for over 50 years, it is easy to visualize her stories, as unlikely as they may be. Fun stories to read and love the names and occupations she gives her characters. Will be looking for more from Barbara!

Great Read!

Barbara Silkstone always gives me a fun, feel-good reading experience and Cold Case Morphs was no exception. If you're in the mood for something different, then you should read this book. I recommend it!

I thought this would be better

I have really loved what I have read of the Bibliomystery series. I love that they are well written short stories all about a book or books in general. It is a clever idea and some of the biggest names in writing have written stories for the series.

Now I was fortunate enough to read this story for an honest review and help spreading the word about the story. Well, I must be honest and say I was not overly impressed with this book. I was excited to read this one because it had elements of Tragedy, Anger, Lies, and Scandal. It turns out that the story just wasn't for me. I thought it was a bit slow for the most part and maybe if this was a full novel it might have been better. If there was more time to develop the characters and plot this might have been a much more entertaining story. It is very difficult to try to discuss the plot of the story because since it is such a shot story I would be afraid of giving things away.

That being said the writing was very well done. I liked the style it was written in and again, if there was more to this story I might have enjoyed it more. I still like the series and I am glad I read this. I would just have to say that this is my least favorite so far.

Would you lie and kill to survive a death camp?

What would you do to survive in a concentration camp? Would you lie, kill, abandon your essential humanity? This strong tale, well conceived and written, with enough suspense to keep you wondering, looks at these questions and a survivor -or is he? Weisen's new life, based on lies, begins to unravel till the obvious end - I wish Coleman had been more creative and fashioned an even more ironic ending.

No Second Thoughts Here

I've been a fan of Steve Berman's fiction since reading his short novel VINTAGE, a love story involving living and ghostly gay teens. I read his collection TRYSTS a few years back. I somehow lost this collection in the shuffle of releases from Lethe Press in general and all of the multi-author anthologies Berman has edited in recent years and so placed it on my "TBR Challenge" List for 2013. I read it a few months ago, but then fell behind on writing my reviews, so here it finally is.

Unsurprisingly, I loved most of this collection. The stories are all speculative fiction of some kind (horror, fantasy, even a bit of SF). Almost all feature gay protagonists and antagonists, but the emotions they touch on and the life-moments they elicit are universal. Several take familiar stories and riff uniquely on them (for instance, "Bittersweet," which riffs on the story of the gingerbread man, and "Secrets of the Gwangi," which gives us a secret history of that great claymation dinosaur western "Valley of the Gwangi"). Only one, "Tearjerker," takes place in Berman's SF world The Fallen Area (visited previously in four of the stories in TRYSTS), a world I wish Berman would return to and develop more. "Tearjerker" is one of my favorite stories in the collection, alongside "Bittersweet," the disturbing "Well Wishing," which puts a different spin on the old trope of the lonely traveler who spends the night at a rural residence and is warned not to touch the farmer's daughter "or else," the longing-filled "Kinder," in which German brats infest a historical house and bedevil the live-in docent, and the playful-yet-dark "The High Cost for Tamarind," which takes place in an alternate London where the Fey thrive unseen among normal people.

There are thirteen stories listed in the TOC, but the book actually contains fourteen stories. Each piece of fiction is followed by an Author's Note, but even here Berman cannot resist tweaking the trope: the author's notes taken together tell a story with as solid a thru-line and building tension as any of the book's stories, adding a nice depth to an already full single-author collection.

inspired and highly original

Second Thoughts is a collection of extremely imaginative, often paranormal short stories along with a group of affecting and very personal author notes which weave more of a connected, largely non-fictional account. There are some instances where the notes noticeably stray from the truth, and at least one moment may give the reader a shock while he or she tries to decide whether the author is retelling an actual event.

Some of the stories take place in well-described and exotic locations such as Tampico, Mongolia or Japan.

Funny, fun fairytales

Because this was a collection of stories and Poems somewhere better than others but on the whole this was a great book. The narrator also sometimes seemed better than other times, but in some of the stories he did a masterful job.

Overall this was a delightful and foot are you book full of lots of short reads.

I loved the The Gingerbread Puppet Boy recording.

Where does Open Doors: Fractured Fairy Tales rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Pretty good. It's not Focus on the Family Radio Theater, but it's fairly decent.

What did you like best about this story?

Well, I listened to it because my story, the "Gingerbread Puppet Boy" (Section 60) is on the recording. I found the dramatic rendition to be highly entertaining--in fact it moved me to joyful tears. (I worked with the Tears of Joy Puppet Theater in Vancouver, WA years ago.)

Which character as performed by Andy Babinski was your favorite?

I thought the English accents were hilarious, especially since the story is set in the United States. The discrepancy, and Mr. Babinski's delightful stiff reading manner only added to the humor.

If you could take any character from Open Doors: Fractured Fairy Tales out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Probably I'd take the puppeteer, his wife, and the puppets. Why not? It would be fun. I'd want to ask them to speculate as to why people felt an irresistible compulsion to chase him.

Any additional comments?

Just one critical remark: The audio book should contain a printed Table of Contents that includes the titles and author's names. Also, a way to link directly to a story without scrolling through them all. And the cover of the book itself could be better, much better!

Funniest "Dirty,Cheating, Husband" Story EVER!!

I read the first short story in the book about 9 years ago. It remains the funniest piece of fiction I have ever read. In fact, I'm lauging thinking about it right now.

This is a "dirty rotten cheating husband" story. It explodes as our heroine learns her husband is leaving her for another woman, and proceeds with a continual string of insane antics for the purpose of getting revenge on her ex. She justs takes a mini break from sanity and indulges herself in hilarious wild romps meant to humiliate and financially ruin her ex husband. However,the process eventually rewards her with the return of her self esteem,dignity, and inner strength.

The other stories are very good also, and the narration is excellent.

These are really wonderful stories for any reader who likes short form fiction. I'm not a western-genre reader by any means.

Great stories

I loved these stories! Like a cross between Mark Twain, Hemmingway, and L'Amour. Most westerns treat the reader like a dummy, and spoon feed the story. This author let's you figure out the moral of the story.

Great short stories.

Estleman is a first class writer. His stories of the west ring true and are quite enjoyable. A good read.
