AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall: 5 Narration: 5 Story: 5

This was my first introduction to the work of Avrom Reisen, but I could not have imagined enjoying a collection more: even being predisposed to appreciating short stories. This collection was not one that I listened to in one sitting, I did separate my listening into chunks over several days, but the stories would run about in my head until I started again.

Truly about nothing and everything, there is no common thread that ties these stories together but the experience of being human: with all of the frailties, faults, hopes and dreams that are universal. The unique perspective of the characters, as most are Jewish and tend to identify strongly with their faith and family, brings the realization that people are universally good and bad, flawed and foolish, and most dreams are similar.

Narration is provided by David Skulski: his ability to enhance the characters with emotion in subtle inflection changes, and the smooth transitions from the few Yiddish or hybrid Yiddish/English phrases gives the sense of being present when conversations take place. His voice is a comfortable listen with tone and pitch that are pleasing to listen to, and quite relaxing. Perhaps the stellar moments for me are the ones where the character he is portraying is taking pains to enunciate clearly: either for effect or because they are taking pains to speak carefully the few words of English they are not embarrassed to speak. I couldn't help but chuckle, as I have encountered other immigrants who are very precise in their speech patterns when first using English.

Many of these stories feel very `of their day' and almost quaint in the topics that are addressed, but that makes the collection even more charming and endearing. I did not listen to this collection all at once, in fact, after the first hour or so I used these stories as my `mid-day relaxation', taking some time to do nothing in the middle of the day BUT listen and imagine the scenes being set. Whether you use it as I did, or find other moments to listen and enjoy, you should take the moments.

Enjoyable jungle tales

This is a very entertaining selection of surprisingly well-written (by pulp standards) jungle tales. No jungle superheroes here. Rather, each story is told from the point-of-view of two rubber-plantation workers focusing on the folly of some evil-doer(s) leading to their well-deserved punishment; this does result in a certain sameness one story to the next, but this is mitigated by the author's flowing writing style, keen descriptive abilities, and the absence of Hollywood jungle movie cliches (keeping in mind these are set in the jungles of South America, not Africa). I lack the expertise to say whether these tales actually ARE more realistic than others of their ilk, but they certainly SEEM to be (due, no doubt, to a combination of Friel's firsthand Amazon jungle experience, creative imagination, and writing talent). There are occasionally SOME exaggerated plot elements; this is, afterall, pulp fiction, but overall there is a subdued and subtle, understated tone to these tales which adds to their crediblity. To conclude, this is an enjoyable collection that I would recommend to discriminating fans of the genre.

Rhonda Nelson is always a great romantic read. She's sassy and funny, and adds little idiosyncratic moments to the story that are creative and nuanced. She's one of my favorites!

This is one of my favorite short stories. I first read it when in ninth grade and it has never lost its' allure. There was a movie made on the same premise with James Garner, Eva Marie Saint and Rod Taylor, titled 36 Hours.

Too short.

A novel would have been better. Not much of a story line. It would of been nice to know more about both Mom and Dad.

Happily. Ever after

I chose to give this book five stars, because even though it was sad because the mother dies, it ends happy for a lonely woman when she gets a child and later on a man to love her. This is what Christmas is all about miracles. If you believe in miracles this is a must read book.

Unfortunately, this 10 minute (at most) read was goofy in the extreme, had multiple grammatical errors and just wasn't worth the 10 minutes it took to complete the book.

Good short story

This book was very good. It was a short story, but it was nice to take a break from the other books that have over 300 pages. It keep you interested and was just a nice feel good book and you can't beat $.99
