  • The Portal in the Park Audiobook by Cricket Casey

Title: The Portal in the Park
Subtitle: Songs and Audio Book Performed by Grandmaster Melle Mel, Featuring Lady Gaga
    Author: Cricket Casey
    Narrator: Grandmaster Melle Mel
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-16-10
    Publisher: More Books Press, Inc.
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 5-7
    Publisher's Summary:
The Portal in the Park is a modern day Siddhartha with an urban multicultural edge for a multitasking generation of young listeners ages 6 to 10. It is a musical fantasy adventure that takes its 11-year-old hero - hero and audience - into another dimension, a world where magical creatures introduce the boy to new awakenings of his body and mind.
It tells the story of Scott, a typical bored 11-year-old boy, who one afternoon, while playing with his friends in Central Park, leans too far over the bridge and tumbles off unexpectedly into a magic portal that leads him into another world where he meets frightening creatures who attempt to destroy his spirit with their negative energy and attitudes. Further on his journey, he encounters other magical creatures who, in dialog and song, teach Scott about positive feelings, managing his emotions, self-discipline, and the value of exercise. As good and evil battle each other, Scott experiences a personal transformation.
Returning to the real world, he is a changed boy with new, healthier values, and a happier attitude. This is a fictional tale that is brought to life with music and songs that move children in a new direction of holistic literature, using both right brain and left brain to help them Read, Rap and Remember.
NOTE: The audiobook consists of narration of the story plus seven original songs performed by Grandmaster Melle Mel and two songs featuring Lady Gaga. This interactive book "reads" to the class, teacher, kids, or family members while they can all sing-a-long. It is geared to elementary school age children 6 to 10 years of age.
    Critic Reviews:
"Grandmaster Melle Mel has done it again! Melle Mel and Casey have written and produced a read and rap fable with a new Message for our youth through story and hip-hop songs, to help kids choose the right path of activity not passivity. Read 'n' rap with your kids and join Melle Mel and Lady Gaga as they give Grammy-worthy performances. It's The Message that counts and Melle and Casey are our kind of messengers for the future." (Quincy Jones)

Great story for our youth today.
This is a wonderful story for our youth told in an unusual story of a journey through a portal. I highly recommend it.
Alice in Wonderland New York Style
This is a must read for all grade schoolers. It is written in large print as well accompanied by a CD with Narrated by Melle Mel and Lady Gagg teaming up with Melle to crank out some soon to be toons that will hit the charts like bullets. I think this first editition will also become a collectors item. The book's author Cricket Casey an educator herself know how to inspire the young and take them away from the negative influences tugging at them and brings them into a world of new values and self worth. I don't want to say to much because this is one those books that you need to read, and will find yourself enjoying for different reasons each time you read it. The average adult can read this right through on quiet day without distractions.
I personal endorse this book and bet it wil reach the hights of Dick and Jane in a short time.
A really good book for school children !
I really enjoyed the animated voices and the uplifting songs in the audio book. It really captivates the reader.

    Members Reviews:
    Where my Brooklyn peoples at?
Once I was perusing a children's literature listserv when someone proposed the following question: Are there any good children's books about Jewish children that don't focus solely on the Holocaust? Locating such tales is not easiest task in the world. In fact, finding modern books about contemporary Jewish children is well nigh impossible sometimes. You're better off if you look for books containing recent Jewish immigrants, if anything. The best books of this kind is definitely the "All-of-a-Kind Family" series by Sydney Taylor. Less well-known but still worthy reading is Joan W. Blos's, "Brooklyn Doesn't Rhyme". A familiar story of a girl living in early 20th century New York, the tale focuses on the lives of Jewish arrivals in America and the world in which they lived.
Rosey has a pretty darn good life. Her father has a steady job, she lives in a nice house in Brooklyn, and her family loves one another. But when asked in school to write her family's story in a composition, Rosey finds herself stymied. According to her, nothing interesting has ever happened in her family. Sure, there was that time when Rosey bought a bag of chocolate babies for her new baby sister and then ate every last one. Or when she tried to help out her depressed serving girl by taking her to the doctor. There was the story of how her brother made friends with a boy in her grade, or that grueling move the family made from their flat to their new home. Eventually, Rosey tells us the stories of her family's life and how well they've survived in Brooklyn itself. And we find that perhaps she's got a lot to say about her world and people. Much of it is very interesting indeed.
As I mentioned before, this book is closest to "All-of-a-Kind Family" in a variety of ways. The setting, the characters, and the time period are very similar. Most surprising to me was the fact that both books even went so far as to arrange storylines around those tasty chocolate babies. There are some distinct differences, of course. For one thing, "Brooklyn Doesn't Rhyme" places itself firmly within its time period in each and every chapter. Sometimes it teaches the reader about suffrage or the rights of women to unionize. Other times it adds little period details while furthering the plot. Kids who read this book will learn about hauling ice to the ice box or the early years of the Ford motor plant. Oddly enough, this book isn't very Jewish. Where "All-of-a-Kind Family" made certain to mention specific holidays, foods, and religious customs, "Brooklyn Doesn't Rhyme" just mentions that characters were forced to flee from different countries because of their religion. That's about the extent of their culture. "All-of-a-Kind Family" tackled questions of inter-religious marriage and the breaking of faith. This book is more interested in presenting the time period than it is handling the tough questions.

    Critic Reviews:
"It's an unabashedly old-fashioned retelling, making few concessions to modern sensibilities; as such, it carries a power rarely found in fairy-tale retellings." (Kirkus Reviews)

    Fairytale at its finest
I love this fairytale and am surprised how few adaptations there are. I also enjoy the illustrations I this book. I am glad to finally own my own copy to have in my library. I recommend it to everyone.
A soldier with nothing to return home to and down on his luck has been tricked by the devil to enter into a 7 year pact. The first year was easy enough, but then he realizes how the devil will succeed and take his soul. Thankfully, he discovers the saving power of charity and selflessness that carries him through the rest of the pact years.
This doesn't tell the whole tale, but is appropriate for children. I like the message it teaches and look forward to raising my children with this fairytale.
I taught 5th grade religion in a Catholic school, ...
I taught 5th grade religion in a Catholic school, and I always read this picture book when we studied prayer. The character in this book is not allowed to pray for himself, so he asks others to pray for him. It really gets the idea of intercessory prayer across to kids--that sometimes people are in such a dark place that they need others to pray for them. It has always riveted my students and will remain on my bookshelf for my grandchildren.
This book captures the essence of the beautiful tale really perfectly
Amazingly moving story with striking art. This book captures the essence of the beautiful tale really perfectly. Children and adults both are spell bound and inspired by this. Wish all children's literature was like this!

What bumosaur is that is amazing
I liked how andy griffiths was able to turn names like stingray into a bumray but I didn't really like some of the maturity
    Boys love the humour
I have 10 and 12 year old boys, they first read the bumosaur book when in grade 2-3 at school (Aged 7 or 8) They absolutely love the humour and giggled the whole way through the book... frequently running to me with eyes wide open and hand over mouth gigggling 'read that bit mum!!' It has encouraged them to continue reading, and they still struggle to find books that they think are as funny as this one was.

Once again, a super book in the series. I thought I would use it as a mentor book when we get ready to write our own books.
    A guide for serious procrastinators
The Mr.Putter and Tabby series is quite good in general, and is worth multiple trips to the library. This particular edition, however, will greatly appeal to parents as well as to kids. The kids will enjoy the story of how Mr. Putter sets out to write a book and how Tabby enjoys the resulting snacks, but parents will truly appreciate Mr. Putter as a first class procrastinator.
