The Ethics and Morality of Ivory Poaching

In this short children's book, McCall Smith is as usual interested in ethics and morality. The book centers on Akimbo, a child of about 7 or 8 years of age. Akimbo becomes aware that there are people that poach Ivory, by killing elephants illegally and taking the tusks. Akimbo learns this when he and his father, a park ranger come upon a dead elephant and a live calf. Akimbo is bothered greatly by this situation. Not only is he bothered by the dead mother, but also by the calf left behind.

In discussing this with his father, Akimbo discovers that it is very, very difficult for poachers to be caught and brought to justice. He hatches a plan to do just that. His plan is to find out who the poachers are, and get proof of their illegal activity. Then to turn this information over to his father so the poachers can be brought to justice.

In effectuating his plan, Akimbo is exposed to considerable personal danger. Nonetheless, he decides that the unethical behavior of the poachers is worth the risk to his person. The story tells how Akimbo achieves this objective. The book is an excellent story for children and teaches not only ethics and morality, but also something about Africa and elephants and Ivory. It should be considered by all parents trying to show examples of ethical and unethical behavior to their young children. In addition, it shows the concept that one has the choice to act ethically, or to just sit it out and watch. Akimbo chooses the former rather than the later.

Akimbo is a passionate and brave boy. This is the kind of story my grandson will enjoy. I look forward to reading the rest of the series with him.

Redefining Pollyanna

Rebecca Burns has great accent. I can't quite put my finger on the origins but she is perfect for this story. The word Pollyanna has taken on something of a negative connotation, a kind of empty headed happiness despite circumstances, usually said in a sneering condescending tone after the fashion of some college professors or self righteous politicians. I carried away a very different idea of a Pollyanna. For your consideration: Her father died. Her mother died. Her brothers and sisters all died. She is homeless and penniless. She is sent to live with a relative who doesn't love her or want her. She truly stands alone. She took all the hard knocks that the world threw her way. As often as she was knocked down; she picked herself up, dusted herself off and found a reason to smile as she faced the next trial. Even when pummeled with blows which have brought great men to their knees, Pollyanna did not yield. Almost, perhaps, but she never surrendered. Further evidence for your consideration: Who changed? Not Pollyanna; she was the glowing wondering little person at the end that she was when we first met. Nope, it was the adults who were changed by this small force of nature: Aunt Polly, the doctor, Nancy, Mr. Pendleton, the minister, et al, in fact an entire town. So if someone is Pollyannaish, what are they? In my book, brave as a combat Marine, loyal as a Saint Bernard and tough as a Pollyanna Whittier.

Fun little book!!!

Although there were parts I lost patience listening to pollyana being TOO GOOD, I love the fact that it is so well described that made me feel as I was living the story caring for Pollyana and her loved ones :)

Read it for your Kids or listen for your entertainment :)

Old-fashioned, but excellent

Pollyanna is a very, very old-fashioned novel, but it's very well done. Its very similar to the Disney movie, although not identical. This version was extremely well narrated, too.

Very reminiscent of Tarkington 's Penrod books (among the funniest books ever written) and just as good.

Wonderful story, beautifully read.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Absolutely. The whole family listened to Just William stories on a very lengthy car trip (15 hours drive). The time passed quickly, with my 7 year old boys, my mother-in-law, myself and my husband entranced by the stories. We roared with laughter at Williams antics and at times the car literally shook with laughter.

The stories are so simple and yet extremely clever and the reading is wonderful. My husband still repeats some of the phrases sometimes: "I'm just bein' plite" says my husband in his best William voice when he does something especially annoying...

What was one of the most memorable moments of Just William?

Every story was just so wonderful it's hard to pick a favourite moment. I'd say my best memory was looking around at the faces of my family, the seven year old boys and their grandmother sitting togethor, eyes bright with joy, at one, roaring with laughter.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Laugh, and laugh and laugh some more. At one point, we were rolling around the floor (in the Shakespeare story) weak with laughter. The boys didn't get all of it, but they did get the 'ham and eggs and bacon' jokes.

You will love, love, love these stories. I have already told my mother off for not giving them to me as a child. But I can still enjoy them now!!

Be Prepared to Laugh - Lots!

Would you listen to Just William again? Why?

We enjoyed this on holiday, as a family,.

We had to pause the story a time or two as the adults were in fits of laughter and the story could no longer be heard.

I think this would be our favourite Just William audio, thanks mostly to the excellent narration by Martin Jarvis - that man is an artist!

Not for us

We thought this would be an intereseting series The stories have a little rascals in England twist to them but the story lines did not captivate my 7yr old son's attention and he was lost in all of the english phrases.

This is an entertaining children's story, interrupted by long digressions on Dutch history and culture. This is one of the few occasions where I would have preferred an abridgement.

Great if you Love Baseball

My youngest boys, 8 & 11, love these stories. They involve real professional baseball teams, and the kids are related to the sports reporters and go to various stadiums with them. These are perfect for young boys or girls who love baseball.

Good finish, but poor main character and confusing ideas.

This the Eighth and final book of the missing series and I have to say, the author did a pretty good job as far as happy endings go. Without giving away too much, our favorite characters emerge unscathed and become one,big happy family. Almost literarily. I can't say that i was enthused with Jordan. He seems whiny and incompetent, not just compared to Jonah, but in general. I can understand Jordan's shock and desperation for things to be fixed, but he seems too caught up with himself. The other element of this book that cost it a star is something that I noticed in the last book too. It's a hodge-podge of ideas, thrown together so rapidly that it takes at least two reads of each sentence before the meaning seeps into his brain.Nevertheless, it's a good story and I'd recomend this book to anyone.

Series was AWESOME this book not as much

I loved the entire series but the last book I did not like as much. I did not like that Jordan understood time travel so quick and when it said that he could be wiser then Jonah and Katherine just because he watched them save time. It was not like he had to make the choices he did not have to think how do I do this how do I solve this problem. Jordan also seemed a lot wimpier and more babyish especially compared to Jonah also I know in the 7th book Jonah was worried about his parents but Jonah felt the need to protect them and Jordan wanted them to protect him, and in the book I saw no moments where Jordan and Jonah had like a brother bonding moment that I crave for in books. I am sorry for being a complete critic but this was not Margaret Peterson's best work.

Different from the other books in the series.

I loved this series, but this book is lacking a lot of what made the other books great. There is a lot of time travel in the book but there is no history. I loved the history in the other books. Also, while in the future, the kids are kept from learning too much about the future (so we don't get to see what it is like either). Much of the book takes place in a bland setting. This story is character driven, but it is a new character that we don't know very well. I was rather disappointed in this book.

Worth the buy for younger kids (7 and under in my opinion)

This ebook of short stories is the first of a few I have. It consists of the following:

-5 short stories

-13 jokes

-maze activity

The stories are short, and take a few minutes to read. I read them with my five year old daughter, and we take turns: I read one paragraph and she reads the next. There are a few words here and there that challenge her (which is good!). And we've both learned a couple things from the stories.

I gave this four stars because I personally think that this book would be good for kids up to age 7, not 10. That's my personal opinion though. Also, there is one image at the beginning of each story. An improvement point would be to have more images, or a better, more detailed image that has to do with the story at its beginning.

Otherwise, it's great for my daughter and I to read together.

Cute little book for kids

This is a cute little childrenâs book by Uncle Amon. This author writes quite a few childrenâs books. This one is about Willy the Whale.

Willy is a baby whale who is just learning about his body and how to move around in water and what everything is in the world. He learns about his fins, tails, diving deep, jumping, breathing, singing and having fun in general.

This book also has a few jokes in the back and a pirate themed puzzle for you to figure out.

Excellent book for younger children to learn more about whales

Uncle Amon has yet again wrote another book that not only is enjoyable to children but teaches them about animals. This book is all about a young whale named Willy. Throughout the story Willy learns about why he has fins and tail, the dangers of the oceans, predators of whales just to name a few. But most of all Willy learns life lessons, that we need to listen to our parents, be an active part of our family, and obedient when our parents ask us to do something.

Children will certainly enjoy the adventures that Willy goes on in the ocean. But teachers will enjoy using this book as a resource for their students when they are writing research papers about whales. The information is listed in an easy to read manner that will help younger students when learning about whales.

Great read..teaches lessons.

I am reviewing Wily the Whale, Short Stories, Games, and More! by Uncle Amon. My grandaughter and I are in love with this collection. I love how each short story begins with a wonderful graphic of a whale or creature from the sea. I think these stories have great points to them and really work on expanding a child's character while also teaching them about the . Not just a book for the sake of having words on the page. The stories are short enough to keep even the youngest child's attention. Definitely worth it! I think that we will be reading this over and over again.

Perfect short stories

I'm so glad I found these adorable stories! My kids (and I) love them! They're the perfect length for when you only have time for one, but it still leaves your kids satisfied. The language is perfect, not dummed down (like some other kids' books), a little old fashioned (consider the time they were written), but still understandable. I got them on Kindle for free, which is an added bonus, and will be reading all his other stories when we're done with 'Old Mother West Wind.'

I love this book.

these children's books are wonderful to improve the imagination of your child. I am 57 years and I love this book.I bought it for my 9 year old granddaughter. I loved these books as a child and I know she will love getting lost in these stories about all different kinds of animals from the meadow to the woods and all of the small winds that blow called the little breezes. Lots of fun packed in a book. Wonderful reading.

A hit with my kids. Not a pic with every story.

Had never heard of these. My book-loving 5- and 3- year old boys enjoy the stories, though I'll say they're nothing too exciting. I like that most are short enough to read to them in just a few minutes. We skip around. Many stories have an accompanying illustration, but some do not.

Out of order

The story chapters are out if order in this audiobook. All of the sudden the book started over and then in the next chapter the princess was trying to escape. Frustrating.
