This book should be required reading for high school and college kids as well as their parents. Even parents who don't have their heads in the sand about what actually transpires day to day in their teens' lives will be grateful for the detailed information. The tips for kids on handling the hook up culture, drinking and general social awkwardness of college are invaluable - a helpful guide to not only surviving, but thriving in the social scene of college. I am giving this book to friends with teens as well as to several teens in my life. What a resource!!!

I gave this book to a friend of mine's daughter who has just started her Freshman year. She told me she could not put it down and was SO THANKFUL I had given it to her. Have decided all my nieces and nephews, currently in college, will be getting this book for Christmas! Sex, College, and Social Media is now my go to gift for everyone heading off to college! Thank you Cindy Pierce for getting this information out there!
PARENTS of College Students: BUY & READ THIS (then tuck it in your kid's next care package)
College students most definitely NEED this guide, as do any PARENTS of college students who want a better grasp of the social challenges our kids are facing. As a family physician who now exclusively treats current college students, I hear first-hand how frustrating and confusing the current social climate is on campus- NOT just for those hooking up, but for their entire extended friend group. I see too many young people "after the fact" who wish they could turn back the clock and change last night's series of decisions (regarding alcohol, sex, drugs, or purely relationship missteps with friends or potential dates.) This book is a great way to open conversations and/or provide accurate information and practical advice on traditionally awkward topics.
Pierce starts with "Facebook friend" envy/depression as teens compare the reality of their life in one moment to hundreds of carefully orchestrated social media posts, then addresses how their subsequent "lack of social patience" from these one-sided communication norms affects relationships in "real life". She explains the dating apps like Tinder or Hinge, why and how they appeal to young people (including those who peruse these apps for entertainment, without any intention of an actual hookup.) If you've never heard of YikYak...you need to learn about it.
