    Title: The Dillinger Days
    Author: John Toland
    Narrator: Grover Gardner
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-14-17
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 4 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
For 13 violent months in the 1930s, John Dillinger and his gang swept through the Midwest. The criminals of the Depression robbed almost at will, as the Indiana State Police had only 41 members, including clerks and typists. Dillinger's daring escapes at Crown Point jail or through the withering machine gun fire of FBI agents at Little Bohemia Lodge, along with his countless bank robberies, excited the imagination of a despondent country. He eluded the lawmen of a half-dozen states and the growing power of the FBI, earning him the dubious honor of Public Enemy Number One and captivating Americans to the present day. His brief but significant career is vividly chronicled here in extraordinary detail, as is the entire outlaw era of Baby Face Nelson, Bonnie and Clyde, Ma Barker, and Machine Gun Kelly. John Toland conducted hundreds of interviews; his research took him through 34states, into the cells where Dillinger was confined, and into every bank he robbed.
The Dillinger Days is the inside account of a desperate and determined war between the law and the lawless, a struggle that did not end until a unique set of circumstances led to Dillinger's bloody death outside a Chicago movie house.

    So far, highly questionable scholarship
Having just finished Jeff Guinn's exhaustively researched book on Bonnie and Clyde, I was disappounted as well as concerned to find that Toland merely spewed forth the most cursory scurrilous and disproved information about them. Straight out of the mouths of period news hacks, completely irresponsible sensationalistic journalism regurgitated as fact. It makes me question the veracity of everything else Toland writes. I am returning this rather than waste my time on false accounts.
Mr. Gardner's reading is of the usual excellent quality.

Short, interesting, but would like to have learned more
This book was interesting but it did not include a lot of information that would have made it really great. It was too short and each killer was only a sketch of their crime and potential capture. The most important thing I did get from this book was that there were several on that modern list that has not been caught. that is a pretty scary revelation.
I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject
This book unveils the stories of five of the most evil and gruesome serial killers who terrorized the US population over the last 50 years or so, Each story is based on real-life police and witness accounts that reveal the sadistic methods and the fate of these notorious murderers. I definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in the subject!
This is a super fast read
This is a super fast read. The author writes quick information about 5 serial killers: The Long Island Killer, The Zodiac Killer, Genene Jones, The Boston Strangler and Richard Ramirez, but none of the information was new or different than anything else I've ever read about the cases. For me, it wasn't an exciting or informative book and not one I would recommend.
It's more like a college paper
Read it in about ten minutes with constant interruption. Had I been left alone I could have probably read it in 5 minutes. Not very informative and certainly not worth $3. It's more like a college paper, not a book.
Good short overview about some serial killers
This is a short book that gives some basic information about some serial killers. The book will trigger you to find out more about this serial killers. The book reads fast and easy.

At 41 - with two teenagers and a contentedly unadventurous life - Heather Hawkins made a doctor's appointment. Diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer, within nine days she had surgery to remove an 18cm tumour and a full hysterectomy. Instead of chemotherapy, she chose a noninvasive surveillance treatment.
The experience reignited Heather's adventurous and invincible spirit. At 47 she pulled on an old pair of shorts and runners and struggled to the end of a four kilometres mothers' day fun run with her kids. Five years later she has 17 marathons and three ultra-marathons under her belt, including the North Pole Marathon and the extraordinary World Marathon Challenge - a gruelling seven marathons in seven days on seven continents. She topped that off by trekking 1,700 km in the thin air of Nepal's Great Himalaya Trail.
And she's only just getting started....

    Publisher's Summary:
It's still difficult for people today to conceive of someone being born bad, even as more and more studies are coming out each year that point to the significant effects of DNA on human behavior. But of course, it is also rare that a child born to parents carrying the genes for mental illness or antisocial behavior grows up in a happy, stable home where the parents are equipped to provide a living, nurturing life. Even children who are adopted into loving homes have to deal with feelings of having been unwanted by their biological parents. Simply put, nature and nurturing can often have countervailing influences.
Unfortunately, in the case of David Berkowitz, best known as the "Son of Sam", it seems almost as though nature and nurture both conspired against him. In the wake of his notorious crime spree, one of the most infamous of the 20th century, he recalled internal struggles to conform from a very early age and had to deal with the baggage and insecurities that came from his adoption. As he grew up, he seems to have lacked the will, or at least the fear of the justice system, that kept many others like him from going too far down a bad road. Indeed, he later claimed to be unable to control himself, describing dark forces that pressed him on to do things he would never have otherwise done, even as he ultimately confessed to his heinous acts and accepted his punishment rather than drag himself and his victims through a long, drawn out trial.

Authorities have attributed the death of up to 48 elderly women in Mexico to Juana, and she was found guilty in 2008 of several murders and was sentenced to a total of 759 years in jail for her crimes. Referred to as Mataviejitas, or Little Old Lady Killer, Juana's killing spree and the subsequent police investigation became national news in Mexico in 2007 and 2008, and led to widespread pressure on the police department to solve the series of crimes against the nation's most vulnerable members of society.

I am fascinated by Serial Killers. This one works!
Would you listen to Serial Killer Juana Barraza again? Why?
I would listen to it again to hear the names of the many different people that lost their lives to this woman. They were very trusting, most of them were.
Who was your favorite character and why?
I didn't have a particular favorite character. I was truly mystified that Juana was able to go on as long as she was undetected until she made her mistakes and got caught. So many people were very trusting. Makes me want to keep my doors locked.
What about Brenda Lees performance did you like?
This person sounded enthused about telling the story. The words were clear and concise. I appreciate that in an audio book.
If you could give Serial Killer Juana Barraza a new subtitle, what would it be?
    The title is fine.
    Any additional comments?
I enjoyed it. I wouldn't have minded it being a little longer, but I still liked it.

Length: 10 hrs and 36 mins

    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Criminals
    Publisher's Summary:
'Main Shakeel Bhai bol raha hoon. Farmaiyen, Sheelaji!'
Among the first female journalists in India to investigate crime and the underworld, Sheela Raval has had an eventful three-decade-long career in print media and television that has seen her track India's most notorious criminals across different parts of the globe. Always hot on the trail of a story, Raval broke the news about Chhota Rajan surviving a brutal assassination attempt in Bangkok in 2000, attended Dawood Ibrahim's daughter's wedding in Dubai and is the only person to have interviewed Samira Jumani, noted gangster Abu Salem's first wife, after Salem's arrest and extradition.
Now, in a candid memoir of fearless reportage, Raval recounts her interactions with the much-feared dons, and the revelations they brought forth about the intricate workings of organized crime within Indian borders and beyond. Raval's bold writing gives fresh, and so-far unpublished, insight into the D Company's evolution as a criminal organization with transnational influence and connections with foreign governments; the much-talked-about split between Dawood and Chhota Rajan; a once-promising cricketer who became one of Mumbai's most-feared dons; the Abu Salem - Monica Bedi affair; and the circumstances that led her to appear as a state witness in the high-profile case against film producer Bharat Shah and Chhota Shakeel.
Chilling and revelatory, Raval's stories provide a fascinating glimpse into the minds of organized criminals who have long haunted India's security forces. Godfathers of Crime is a chronicle of men who have lived outside the boundaries of the law for most of their lives, told through the personal experiences of an intrepid journalist.

Length: 5 hrs and 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-18-17
    Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
Written with self-excoriating candour and the driest humour, a book about being a dad from one of our best loved journalists.
"For me the hardest task of fatherhood was always the oppressive obligation to lead by example. My sons have been present on countless occasions when I have, as we say in my homeland, completely lost my shit. During these stressful moments I have often wished to turn to them as a judge might to a jury and say, 'Please strike the next few minutes from the record', but many of those instances are chronicled here. It's not because I'm any less ashamed now; it's because if I left them out there wouldn't be enough for a book.
"Perhaps this is my life's true purpose: maybe I'm here to teach my sons that self-esteem comes and goes - it can get rolled right out of you at short notice but that you still can get by in life without any, as long as you don't want to be a contestant on The Apprentice. That, at least, is my experience. And for what it's worth, my example."
    Critic Reviews:
Praise for How to be a Husband:
"You'll whoosh through this book with cheery hoots of laughter.... Dowling's a very fresh and smart writer.... There's a proper laugh every couple of pages.... But as well as being funny, which he has to be, Dowling is sometimes plangent...and he is more often than not wise...there's pleasure and treasure here." (Sam Leith, Guardian)
"There's no denying [How to be a Husband's] enormous readability.... Dowling's frequently hilarious Bildungsroman, detailing his evolution from feckless layabout to equally feckless husband and father, offers wisdom, insight and laugh-out-loud one-liners in equal measure.... Gloriously entertaining." (Alexander Larman, Observer)
"This isn't a self-help book.... What [Dowling] has done, effectively, is invent an entirely new genre in literature: that of the self-hinder book.... A rare delight." (Spectator)
"Less a self-help than a self-hinder book, the Guardian columnist's account of how he has coped with the challenges of matrimony (answer: badly) should really be called How Not to Be a Husband." (Thomas Hodgkinson, Spectator, Books of the Year)
"A charming book that claims erroneously, not to be a self-help guide. I've read it. My wife has read it. Divorce has been postponed, at least to Boxing Day." (Sunday Times, Books of the Year)
    "A charming book." (Sunday Times)
