Publisher's Summary:
Be Obsessed or Be Average by Grant Cardone explains how to harness an obsessive or addictive personality for success in the business world. Cardone experienced loss in his family, first economically and then when his father died, and eventually became a struggling car salesman with a drug addiction problem. When he finished a short rehabilitation program, he decided to manage his tendency toward addiction by expending his energy on self-improvement in business and his personal life. He became one of the top automotive salespeople in the country, started investing in real estate, and now owns properties worth $400 million. He attributes this to his obsession with success, which he applies to his family life as well as his business.
The first step of obsession-powered success is to embrace an obsessive personality. A person's obsession should be focused on his or her purpose.

Obsessing about obsession
This author is obsessed with obsession. Especially in audio, you hear the word "obsession" a lot. The author suffered from obsession with things like drugs early on in life, and then decided to obsess over what he was obsessing about and decided to obsess over being a successful salesman, and he succeeded.
The main point here are:
1. It's better to be obsessed (purposefully obsessed at least) than to be average.
2. The way to find what someone will be purposefully obsessed about is to find out what they would do if they had no responsibilities and could do anything. For me, right now, that's take a nap, but I don't think there's much call for that as a profession.
3. Obsessing doesn't mean obsessing to the exclusion of all else. It's important to have a healthy family life and connection to community.
4. Obsession must be supported. You have to feed the beast, focus on the future, and reinforce the obsession.
5. People should not worry about burnout or unfounded doubts, but should heed well-reasoned, well-founded doubt in a sensible manner.
6. People should obsess about self-control and self-discipline.
7. All reward requires risk, and obsession can manage the risk.
8. The best sales people are obsessed. This might explain the electricity guy who knocks on my door every single day with a new story.
9. Over-promise then obsess about over delivering.
10. Obsess about bringing together a team of obsessive people, then obsess about rewarding their obsession.
11. Obsessive people are control freaks.
12. Obsessive people don't give up, which is usually a downside of obsessing, but here it is used as a strength.
13. Obsessive people reach a goal then set a new, harder one.
The narrator is fantastic. I think this book in the original would drive me crazy (see the section on Author's Style for why). In summary it works very well. I thought the audio was good for listening to on the bus, but the information is dense enough it would be a problem with any but the most mindless of knitting. You can't drop out and in when it's this condensed.
I received an advanced readers copy of this book.
