Difficult for non-native speakers, but rewarding

A moving, tragic story. Some of the passages are astonishingly vivid, for example when the protagonist improvises an organ piece that is his lifeâs masterwork. For a someone whoâs not a native German speaker, itâs a challenging read. Schneider uses many antique words and words that are peculiar to Austria and Switzerland. Often I couldnât find them in my Wahrig Kompaktwörterbuch (which actually isnât very compact) nor in Duden online. Considerably harder to read than a typical Krimi, but more rewarding.

One of my favorite books of all time

One of my favorite books of all time. Even reading it again after 26 years it still leaves me depply touched. The story of Johannes Elias Alder is a great example to push for greatness in everything and everyone.

'Upon my word, Semyon!' he cried, seeing the attendant running towards him. 'What is the meaning of it? I am a rheumatic, delicate man and you make me go barefoot! Why is it you don't give me my boots all this time? Where are they?'

Titel: Die Nibelungen

Autor:: Joachim Heinzle

Erzähler: Axel Thielmann

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 1 hr and 10 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 10-27-17

Herausgeber: Lindhardt og Ringhof

Kategorien: Classics, European Literature

Title: The Red and the Black, Volume 2

Author: Stendhal

Narrator: Peter Newcombe Joyce

Format: Unabridged

Length: 12 hrs and 26 mins

Language: English

Release date: 10-12-17

Publisher: Assembled Stories

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The author dedicates his story to 'The Happy Few'. This presumably means those who lead lives free of hypocrisy and deceit. They are few indeed in the second part of this authoritative novel of early 19th-century France.

Julien Sorel leaves the country town of Verrieres and flees to Paris with the sound of guns in pursuit. He is to take up a post as secretary to M. de la Mole, an influential businessman in the capital. Peasant though he may be, Julien is a man of ideas, and in the drawing rooms of Paris in 1830, gripped by the fear of a second revolution, anyone with intellect is treated with disdain.

However, Mathilde, the daughter of the house, has a reverence for past days of glory and honour and, although repulsed by his low status, sees in Julien a chance to break away from her boring suitors and the staleness of her social life. She seduces and rejects him twice before Julien learns the ways of polite society and convinces her of his merit: she becomes infatuated and soon expects his child.

When her father is informed, he requires reassurance that Julien is not just an ambitious social climber who exploits women for the benefit of his career, so he writes to Madame de Renal, with whom Julien had a passionate love affair. The young secretary learns of the nature of her reply, and his following action results in a trial which could end in one of three ways: his freedom to live with Mademoiselle de la Mole, to run away with Madame de Renal or death by guillotine. But while in prison, the young cleric finds the truth of his beliefs and convictions, and he's not prepared to compromise!

Título: Sonata de otoño [Autumn Sonata]

Autor: Ramon del Valle-Inclán

Narrador: Pablo Lopez

Formato: Unabridged

Duración: 2 hrs and 31 mins

Idioma: Español

Fecha de publicación: 10-05-17

Editor: Sonolibro

Autor:: Uwe Johnson

Erzähler: Gert Haucke

Format: Unabridged

Spieldauer: 9 hrs and 34 mins

Sprache: Deutsch

Veröffentlichungsdatum: 09-14-17

Herausgeber: Der Audio Verlag

Kategorien: Classics, European Literature
