How is a prison like a war?

The similarities between mass incarceration and mass murder have been haunting me for a while, and I now find myself inspired by Maya Schenwar's excellent new book Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn't Work and How We Can Do Better. This is one of three books everyone should read right away. The others are The New Jim Crow and Burning Down the House, the former with a focus on racism in incarceration, the latter with a focus on the incarceration of youth. Schenwar's is an overview of incarceration in all its absurd and unfathomable evil -- as well as being a spotlight leading away from this brutal institution.

Locked Down, Locked Out is both an incomparably put together report incorporating statistics and studies with individual quotations and anecdotes, and a personal story of how incarceration has impacted the author's own family and how the author has thought through the complex issues.

Yes, I did recently write an article specifically criticizing the widespread habit of calling everything a "war," and I do still want to see that practice ended -- but not because the linguistic quirk offends me, rather because we make so many things, to one degree or another, actually be like wars. As far as I have seen, no other practice bears remotely as much similarity to war as does prison. How so? Let me count the ways.

1. Both are distinctly American. No other nation spends as much on its military or its prisons, engages in as many wars or locks up as many people.

2. Both are seemingly simple and easy solutions that don't solve anything, but seek to hide it away at a distance. Wars are waged thousands of miles from home. Prisoners are stored out-of-sight hundreds or thousands of miles from home.

3. Both are fundamentally violent and dependent upon the notion that a state "monopoly" on violence prevents violence by others, even while the evidence suggests that it actually encourages violence by others.

4. Both rely on the same process of dehumanizing and demonizing people, either enemies in a war or criminals in a prison. Never mind that most of the people killed by bombs had nothing to do with the squabble used as motivation for the war. Never mind that most of the prisoners had nothing to do with the sort of behavior used to demonize them. Both populations must be labeled as non-human or both institutions collapse.

5. Both are hugely profitable and promoted by the profiteers, who constitute a small clique, the broader society actually being drained economically by both enterprises.

Makes Great Mentoring Accessible

Weâve used this book for 3 mentoring events/programs in my company, over 85 people participated in these events. We partnered with the authors throughout the first event, which was quite powerful, and have since continued to use the book with other groups and programs. Weâve gotten great feedback from both mentors and mentees who read and continue to refer to the book. They commented that they thought they knew what mentoring was but after reading this, there was this realization that their ideas were dated or stale or distorted. Experienced associates who had been mentoring for years realized they had some areas to grow and improve. Many commented that they could relate to the characters, Cynthia or Rafa or both so the learnings were really important to them personally. It was great to see the mentoring pairs put their ideas into words based on the examples from the book and have this shared language we all understood on topics that can be difficult to nail down (goal setting, confidentiality, visionâ). The book is satisfying if you learn through stories/examples or if you learn through concepts. The dual nature of the content made it broadly valuable to more people. I would highly recommend the use of this book in your mentoring programs.

This book is written sort of like a story. It chronicles the series of conversations and thoughts of two fictional characters as they interact in a company sponsored, formal, internal mentoring program. The conversations cover basic such as setting expectations, getting to know one another, goal setting, etc. At the end of each chapter there are some key points summarized and some questions for reflection.

Narration won't let me appreciate content.

The narration style is very annoying to me. Sounds like a robot when he makes. Pauses. When. Talking.

It was really distracting from the content. I would love to have the option to chose another narrator.

Great content (if u survive the first 3 chapters) , beautifully read

Even though the first three chapters take a lot of determination to get through - replete with management speak and lots of smart one liners - the book really blossoms into something of its own after that. A great read with lots of good and practical advice after that.

Brilliantly read aswell that makes the audiobook very energising and inspiring.

once you pass the first 3 extremely poorly written chapters it's easier and faster to listen. few really good points you probably knew already just in right context it makes better sense.

Worth a listen to...

I got about 50% through this audio book, then bought the hard copy so I could make notes and reinforce my learning. Theres a lot to grasp and luckily I have been listening to a lot of books on this subject so I was able to access the ideas.

He mentions a number of strategies, and within an hour or two of listening I implemented them to test their effectiveness.

So far Im impressed.

Going to listen to his next book Quest now to reinforce what Ive learned so far...

Great insight into Google

The great insight into the culture and business model of Google and Silicon Valley. A must listen.

Detail oriented

The book is detailed, coupled with real life examples from the company that so many of us admire. The narrator has done a good job of narrating it with voice modulations wherever required to enhance the impact.

Good book but terrible narration

It's an ok book but No where near the likes of "The everything store" by Brad Stone about Amazon. That's probably because this is a book by an insider. Nevertheless there are nuggets of information that's valuable to learn: how to hire, how to think about product development, what products to prioritize etc.

Some interesting concepts here about ensuring everyone knows what the meeting is about and the meeting canoe. 'Reading' this book has not significantly altered the way I run my own meetings. However, it has enabled me to better share with and teach others why I do certain actions.
