If you are looking for a wise and fun guide to surviving in a startup, look no further than The Tech Entrepreneur's Survival Guide. Bernd Schoner hooks you with his sense of humor and humility in the first paragraph of chapter 1 where he describes why he and his mates from MIT graduate school started their company, ThinkMagic, which they ultimately sold to Trimble Navigation.. "Unlike most successful entrepreneurs who leave school to found a company, we founded a company because we had to leave school."

There are so many great books available about how to do startups that it is almost impossible to come up with new material and novel and useful ideas. I have advised startups in Silicon Valley for more than thirty years,and have read many great books about entrepreneurship and was delighted to find so much new advice offered from a fresh perspective. For example, the author does an excellent job translating the complex legalese of venture capital financing practices into plain English that any entrepreneur can understand. The chapter on compensation is equally good. All of the key insights are presented clearly with summaries of the key points at the end of the chapters.

Mr. Schoner has a clear and confident writer's voice that is refreshingly free of ego. The best thing about this book is that Mr. Schoner feels like an ordinary person who built a successful startup. If you are a first time entrepreneur looking for guidance through the startup process, this is a great book for you. Mr. Schoner shares the wisdom of his journey with you in an accessible way that will make you feel like you can build a successful startup, too.

Not Much New Here

This is not a bad book. I could probably give it 3.5 stars if the rating system allowed it. The book is well organized and covers a lot of information regarding the process of re-inventing organizations and yourself. If you need a pep talk, it is a good book and it has a lot of good ideas.

Why not a higher rating? The book simply does not cover much in the way of new ground. There really is not much here that was not covered decades ago by Napoleon Hill and there are many other newer books that cover much of the same subject matter in much the same way.

Still, the book moves well and the stories included for inspiration and explanation, although some are familiar, are good.

The narration, by the author, is not bad. However, as is so often the case, a professional narration probably would have been better.

One word of warning: The author is from Detroit, and a lot of the examples are about Detroit. The author earnestly believes that Detroit will re-invent itself as a great American city. If you do not want to hear repeatedly about that, this book is not for you.

Great copy, horrible diction

I stopped listening at chapter 3. Great content so far but horrible delivery. I stopped and started provably 10 times trying to get past the author's distracting cadence because I love the information presented, but I found that I was simply repeating each sentence in my head using the correct diction and emphasis on words to make sense of the sentences. I am so frustrated right now.

All Business Owners Need This Book

When I grabbed this book I was thinking it would be mostly about including all races in a business. Boy, was I wrong. It goes into detail about women, Latinos, Asian Americans and even LGBTQIA and Seniors in our society. So many of us are so comfortable in our little bubble of like-minded people who are doing the same things we are doing but thatâs not the real world. The real world is full of many different kinds of people and if we are going to be successful at business â and in life â we have to accept and embrace differences.

I enjoyed the case studies, as they really brought some things to light for me. This book is full of great information and is well-written. Canât wait to see what this author does next!

Narrator wasn't that great. The book is fantastic. The story of automattic and its methodology of working is a great case study in collaboration and the future of working with disbursed teams across the globe.

Boring and over the top

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Perhaps people who don't work in the software industry might enjoy this but to those of us who do, his overly excited descriptions of mostly typical activities and people in smaller software companies are a bore.

Would you ever listen to anything by Scott Berkun again?

Probably not.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Chris Kayser?

Anyone who didn't read in such a monotoned and mono-paced voice.

He also should have learned how to pronounce common computer terms such as Linux. Its pronounced lynn-ux, not line-ux. I cringed every time I heard this. There were others as well.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Year Without Pants?

Remove all of the isn't-this-guy amazing worshiping of people. Remove the weren't-we-so-cool attitude. Too much hype of not much specialness.

a great book on the future of work

loved the details, stories, ideals, and really everything about this book. specifically the leadership lessons in such a decentrallized org were very interesting.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Although I believe the narration was paced well with the content, I believe my listening experience would have been a 4 or 5 if the narration used varied tones or alternate voices for the characters to just provide variation with the listening experience. The tone was kind of dry.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the ways Berkun provides a funny and detailed insight look at life inside Automattic. Berkun focused on his interpersonal relationships with colleagues as well as work related duties that allowed him and his team to bond and make the company better and relations stronger.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

Yes, the narration matched the pace of the story.
