Not Trollope at his best

What did you like best about Linda Tressel? What did you like least?

Loved the setting and the albeit limited descriptions of the house and of Nuremberg from another time. Trollope writes insightfuly from a womans perspective . The religious fanatacism of the Aunt strikes a chime with contemporary society. Thought the plot was thin when compared to other Trollope novels and that some of the twists and turns felt contrived. One for die hard Trollope fans only. The narration is not good...

Would you be willing to try another book from Anthony Trollope? Why or why not?

Yes, Yes, Yes! Trollope is a literary genius and must reads are all the Barchester novels, 'Can You Forgive Her', and 'The Eustace Diamonds'.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The narration was poor. Sounded speeded up and digitally altered. The characters were not sufficiently differentiated. Linda Tressel sounded like a wimp...but was in fact a courageous young woman.

Was Linda Tressel worth the listening time?

Yes...for me, but I am a huge fan of Trollope.

Only if you want to listen to everything Trollope. Definitely not for newbies.

Three Short Stories with Varied Themes - Horror, Lunacy, and Love

Robert Louis Stevenson is best known for Treasure Island, Kidnapped, and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, but he also created a remarkably varied collection of short stories. This Dover Thrift Edition, titled The Body Snatcher and Other Tales, offers three tales: The Body Snatcher (1881), The Merry Men (1884), and The Bottle Imp (1890).

In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century grave robbers provided stolen corpses to medical schools for dissection in anatomy classes. On occasion grave robbers took short cuts, apprehending and murdering individuals on lonely backstreets in London, rather than making a somewhat arduous and risky journey to a rural cemetery. The Body Snatcher is one of Stevenson's most popular short stories, and has been published in many anthologies, especially collections of horror stories.

The Merry Men are not inebriated revelers and party-goers, but a local name for fearsome, pounding breakers along the rocky cliffs of a Scottish isle named Aros. This isolated location is the setting for a tale of greed and lunacy.

The Bottle Imp is a clever tale of a genie trapped within a round-bellied, narrow-necked, milky white glass bottle. The imprisoned imp satisfies all that the bottle owner desires - love, fame, fortune. But there is a catch: for if a man dies before he sells it, he must burn in hell forever. Despite this ghastly premise, Stevenson has woven an intriguing tale of love and adventure, and of good and evil.

Super short book - not the size of other novels

Just be aware that The Guilty River is a short/tiny book of just over 80 pages, the size of a pamphlet, and not the size of some of the other Collin's novels. Keep this in mind to deterimine if the price is worth it. Book is so small they can't print the name of it or the author's name on the binder.

This was a nice surprise

Since reading Wilkie Collins' book, Woman In White, I have been hooked. I love his style, his way with words and his unique way of inserting unexpected twists and turns into a tale. This book was no exception.

At times it is difficult to tell the "good guys from the bad guys" and Collins is a master of leading you to the precipice and throwing the written curve ball. In this story, I missed that curve, absolutely did not see it coming and was delighted when all was revealed.

This is a book I would enjoy reading again. Again, the price of this book, makes it a MUST read.

What makes this special is that while Wilkie Collins may appear to have a "formula" for his stories, it is not as blatant as a Harlequin Romance or Danielle Steele's stories. In this book, the story gets on with it, it's not a hash and rehash of a lack of communication or misunderstanding between the main characters - the story moves the entire time. You won't be bored and you will not have to suspend your belief system in order to get through the story.

Now, if you are reading this and waiting for me to tell you what the book is about - don't hold your breath - I'm not going to do it. If you want the story without reading the book, get the Cliff Notes. It's the end of summer, the skies are blue, there's still time for the beach or the pool or the chaise lounge on the patio or deck - have a staycation and go back to a different time and visit...the price of this ticket on Amazon - can't beat it.

As with all Wilkie Collins's shorter works, it disappoints. He either needed to write books of at least 500 pages or else have Dickens stand by his side.

Happy To Have This One!

WOW This one should be a good read. A Christmas Carol plus 19 other of Charles Dickens classic short stories. The book is thicker than I thought it would be (quite a few pages).

The font is average sized, not large print, not tiny print. This should be great for those occasions when I want to read a good ghost story.

A bit of a difficult read

I'm going to have to read this again as I had a bit of a hard time understanding these stories. I am a die-hard Dickens fan and I can understand most of his prose..but for some reason I had a hard time with this one.

Can't Go Wrong with Dickens, or the Collector's Library!!!!

I love everything written by Charles Dickens. I received some of these Collector's Library books some years ago, and I was so happy with them and the size I searched for more and found them on Amazon.

They are beautiful little books and the quality is wonderful - especially for the price.

They make great stocking stuffers or a little token present for someone who loves to read. I intend on buying many more.

Five years after his death, there is no doubt that Keating would have been delighted that A Kind of Light is surfacing as an original audiobook - he was passionate about the spoken word.

A terrible place to be, Wilde's experience in Reading Gaol changed him. He claimed to be haunted by the pitiful cries of children, it highlights a terrible time in British history.

Beautiful reading by Roy Macready, he really does it justice.
