Silly, funny comedy. I wish they would do a remake on Broadway. On the order of Oscar Wilde comedic plays.
    She Stoops to Conquer
The L.A. Theatre Works production of this late-1700's play of mistaken identities and drawingroom manners is fresh and funny even today. James Marsters is wonderfully funny in the lead role, and the entire cast is excellent.

  • The Lifted Veil Audiobook by George Eliot

    Title: The Lifted Veil
    Author: George Eliot
    Narrator: Clive Chafer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 54 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-04-16
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
George Eliot's The Lifted Veil was first published in Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine in 1859 and has now become one of the author's most widely read and critically discussed stories. Told from the point of view of a young, egocentric, and morbid clairvoyant man, Latimer, it is a dark fantasy portrait of an artist whose visionary powers merely blight his life. The story reflected the scientific interest of the time in the physiology of the brain, mesmerism, phrenology, and experiments in revivification. It also is a reflection of the author's moral philosophy.
The Lifted Veil is a significant part of the Victorian tradition of horror fiction, along with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Robert Louis Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

    Must Read Melancholy Romance
    Wow...
This book had me saying wow early on, and perhaps this was the first sign that I was in the presence of significant literature. Basically, George Eliot (literature buffs know this is Mary Anne Evans) strikes you in 'The Lifted Veil' immediately with a somber punch worthy of Edgar Allen Poe, followed by drama, romance, and a hint of the mystic. The tone remains constant in it's dark mood, but this did little to dampen my enthusiasm as a reader. Already this book has climbed into my top 20 short stories involving romance.
I really would hate to spoil your reading of this great tale with spoilers, but suffice it to say the allusion of the title is referring to the marital veil primarily, and not the veil of death, although that could be also intended on a lesser note. So, basically, I would consider this a great read for anyone ever contemplating marriage, as a cautionary tale. It really does have some good insight into that, as well as the 'pecking order' of family relationships.
Overall, a period romance with a very personal, very somber, slightly mystic and very male feel to it, which distinguishes it greatly.
    Highly recommended.
If you really enjoy Algernon Blackwood
This was a cross between a romance and a mystery, with a slight touch of the occult, which could almost be explained away as personal quirk. If you really enjoy Algernon Blackwood, you'll enjoy this book. The main character has the same kind of sensitivity many a Blackwood character possesses. The protagonist becomes fixated upon a deeply flawed woman. He knows he's fixated and he knows she's flawed. There's ample warning this is a mistake. Such behavior might inspire eye rolling at the least, but there's a curious self awareness to the protagonist. He's not blind, even though he's making a mistake. It's impossible to lay out all the details, without spoiling the story, but it ended up being a dark romance, with some surprising twists.
it's a pretty dry read that doesn't really go anywhere
Although there are a few thought provoking moments in this book, it's a pretty dry read that doesn't really go anywhere. None of the characters make any changes, they aren't that interesting, and certainly don't be on the lookout for anyone likable. Not sad I read it, but not excited either. I kept it on my phone for moments when I was out and about and needed to kill a minute. Perfect for that.

  • She Audiobook by H. Rider Haggard

    Title: She
    Subtitle: A History of Adventure
    Author: H. Rider Haggard
    Narrator: Robert Bethune, Susie Berneis
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 12 hrs
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-13-16
    Publisher: Freshwater Seas
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
At one point in his moody, erotic, and barbarous romance of She, H. Rider Haggard puts into the mouth of his narrator, Horace L. Holly, the observation that her story sounded like some extraordinary invention of a speculative brain. That, precisely, is what She is: a really marvelously inventive story, combining an amazing variety of what should be utterly implausible ideas into a fabric that constantly feels like truth.
Even though we know that there was never a diabolical, immortal, fantastically beautiful white queen ruling over a barbarous tribe of cannibals in the heart of what is now Mozambique, it is hard to resist the impulse to pull up the map and muse about where she might have been hidden. As we get to know Her, H. Rider Haggard ensures that the mystery only deepens. We see her dispense cruel, swift justice; we see her indulge murderous passion; we see her show superhuman devotion; we see her speak from the wisdom gathered in her 20 centuries of life.
We can never be sure just who or what she is. We see her through the eyes of Haggard's protagonist, Holly - a Cambridge don utterly out of his depth in a wild and savage world, utterly English to the core, which is what sees him through in the end. Bitter, misogynistic, and more than mildly racist, he is also a devoted father to his adopted son, Leo - who turns out to be the carrier of an incredible fate - and an unusually determined survivor. We have no trouble believing in Holly, and thereby we suspend disbelief and accept his tale.
There was a strong streak of racism and anti-Semitism in Victorian England, and Haggard was not proof against it. We have not altered or omitted such passages but rather have left them as Haggard wrote them. We do well to remember that just as Haggard fell prey to such thinking from time to time, so too can we, despite all our modern enlightenment.

    Classic Fantasy-Adventure
"She" was first published in 1886, and is written in the florid literary style of the day, but it still reads like the wind. Haggard was a born storyteller, and he never lets his overblown prose slow down the pace of this adventure. It is no wonder that this book has never been out of print in the last 124 years and has sold a reported 44 million copies.
The plot involves three Englishmen who follow the clues written on an ancient piece of pottery to find a fabulous kingdom hidden in the interior of Africa, where a strange lost race is ruled over by "She-Who-Must-Be-Obeyed," a mercurial Queen with supernatural powers, including near-eternal life. The suspense and action rarely flag, and the story set the pattern for countless "lost world" and "lost race" stories that followed, most notably those of Edgar Rice Burroughs. A great read.
One caveat: the $1.00 Kindle version has some typos, and the author's illustrations are missing.
a classic tale of a Lost World
In the style of the times, this is a tale of adventure passed off as truth by the narrator. Unique is that this is purportedly the first instance of the use of a lost civilization in science fiction and it carries many of the hallmarks that later authors shall employ. In particular, a remote civilization cut off from the world in a volcanic caldera.
Also, in the style of the day, the characters oft wax philosophical, which can bog down the adventurous nature of the tale.

    Title: Silas Marner
    Author: George Eliot
    Narrator: Sian Phillips
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-18-15
    Publisher: silksoundbooks Limited
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Framed for a theft he didnt commit and expelled from the church which has been his life, Silas Marner, the weaver, exiles himself to the remote rural village of Raveloe to bury himself in making money with his loom. The arrival of a golden-haired orphan toddler at his door, however, drags the recluse back into the world and away from his obsession with his hoard.
This astonishingly beautiful tale of the importance of human relationships in the redemption of man is set in George Eliot's home county of Warwickshire and is filled with her own knowledge and affectionate dissection of the rural life she witnessed there.
The dissenting church that Silas rejects so totally following the failure of his god to prove his innocence can be seen to mirror the dogma that Eliot herself rejected so fiercely in her own life. Having been a devout follower of a highly evangelical Christianity gleaned from her school days, as Eliot matured she left the self-repression of her youth behind and adopted a firm agnosticism, which she maintained until her death.
Like her other novels, Silas Marner was not written until the writer was in her 40s (it was published in 1861), and the gentle rationalism that runs through the book and its belief in the remedial power of what Eliot called 'pure, natural human relations' create one of the most uplifting and positive of Eliot's works.

A welcome return to George Eliot
Would you listen to Silas Marner again? Why?
George Eliot writes a gripping story which provides an acute social commentary of the time. The novel Silas Marner has a strong storyline which is beautifully narrated and vocally illustrated by Sian Philips.
What other book might you compare Silas Marner to, and why?
It might just be compared to a novel by Dickens - but Eliot does not deliver the overly sentimental endings or "hand of God" plot drivers often characteristic of Dickens novels.
Which character as performed by Sian Phillips was your favourite?
    Dolly Winthrop
Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Although there was little "action" in the conventional sense beyond the first chapters the story kept me gripped throughout.

Fun listen of an H.G.Wells story
What did you love best about The Sea Raiders?
I enjoy a lot of H.G.Wells stories, and this was a new experience.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I love the idea of a "movie" like experience to an audiobook, especially an H.G.Wells story. However, some of the special effects can overpower the narration at times
    Any additional comments?
This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBlast dot com.
    Great story.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
Sounds effects cut back some, so the narration could be heard better but I'm not sure if it was actually because of all the conversions of the file downloaded.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
    Any additional comments?
Classic H.G. Wells story and it is awesome. Love it
I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review via AudiobookBlast dot com.
    Old Time Ocean Horror
Where does The Sea Raiders rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It's hard to rank them, so what I'll say instead is that it was a really good story done in a really entertaining way and deserves to be near the top of audiobooks.
What other book might you compare The Sea Raiders to and why?
Probably Jaws, just because that's the only real ocean related story I ever read where the creatures are wreaking havoc, but it's a tough comparison as they definitely differ greatly.
What does K. Anderson Yancy bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The production of the book and the background noises and everything gives it a lot more tension and creepiness, then he hits it with a very tense tone and everything just ratchets up that much more. This isn't an audiobook, it's more of an old timey radio drama with modern technology.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I didn't, but I did really enjoy it so I'll take that.
    Any additional comments?
I got this in exchange for an honest review, and to be honest I'll be listening to as many as I can get my hands on because I am a big fan of old stories and this production makes them good as new again in my eyes.
