    Do Not get this Story!!
What was most disappointing about John Galsworthys story?
If you are a fan (as I am) of Victorian fiction, this book completely misses the mark. It long and the details are unnecessary the central point of the story. Matter-of-fact i don't think there is a central point to this story.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I can't think of any redeeming qualities to this book. I found it very boring and hard to follow, with too many characters and nothing about the characters to make you want to care about their fates.
    Any additional comments?
I wouldn't recommend this book, especially if you a a fan of the works of Jane Austin or Charles Dickens or any other author during this period. The book felt written by someone who researched the times and not actually lived it. The story is lacking in the Victorian sensibility that drives us to read and re-read those stories written so long ago.

    Publisher's Summary:
We meet Jacob as a small boy; follow him through Cambridge, sharing his thoughts on philosophy and literature; and enjoy his travels and romances in Greece. Then we learn how others see him. The remarkable imagery in Virginia Woolf's classic makes some sections of this book seem almost poetical.

    Jacob, Jacob, wherefore art thou?
If you already love Virginia Woolf's fiction, this is not to be missed. It is the first of her modern novels. Its non-linearity succeeds when her tour de force "The Waves" only comes close. [my somewhat controversial opinion, but I wrote a critical piece that demonstrates my point]. If you want to figure this out for yourself, then read "The Waves" yourself, after reading "Jacob's Room," and compare for yourself. If you're considering this as your first Virginia Woolf fiction, please press pause, and begin with "To the Lighthouse," or maybe "Mrs. Dalloway." CAUTION: This is NOT a standard narrative. Jacob himself hardly shows up. It's usually only people talking about him. And when he does show up, he's usually on his way out of the scene. There really isn't a beginning, a middle, or even an end, and there are some parts that sag. But the parts that soar are breathtakingly outstanding.

This is the first novel in Virginia Woolf's mature style. It is the precursor to her great novels : Mrs. Dalloway and To The Lighthouse. The tone and the imagery are ists best qualities.
    Sophisticated?
This is a strange book. Woolf deliberately cuts the usual connections that conventional novelists present to give the reader continuity. The effect is challenging; one can easily get lost. One could say that some of cuts by the author are arbitrary, can be different simply to be new as music and painting were "new' at the time. Certainly this is not a novel for inexperienced readers, and perhaps would have its audience in advanced college courses. The ending seemed arbitrary, as though Woolfe couldn't manage to sustain a conclusion based on her own characters and chose to use outside events, the First World War, to close her narrative. This said, the book is still sufficiently "new" to be worth the effort needed to get through it.

A beautiful book--the clear predecessor to Mrs. Dalloway, Jacob's room is filled with simply rapturous lines and insights into the working of the human mind. I'd warn that this isn't exactly the place to begin for those who aren't used to stream-of-conscious writing: the book is very experimental and can be hard to follow. But people who have read Mrs. Dalloway and liked it will find this an even more penetrating, tender, and insightful book.
This version of the text was great. No major glitches in the copy-editing. Of course, you also can't beat the price!

    Publisher's Summary:
A main-stay of British children's literature through the 1920's, The Water Babies, A Fairy Tale for a Land Baby was written by Rev. Charles Kinglsey as a serial for Macmillan's Magazine in 1862-63.
Although some of the author's opinions seem dated now, the journey of a little chimney-sweep water-baby through rivers and storms, under sea and over icebergs, is still a wonderful adventure tale for children. The book was adapted into an animated film in 1978 and produced as a play at the Chichester Festival Theatre in 2003.

    Social conditions in England
The Waterbabies, by Charles Kingsley is not only a fairy story, it is also a commentary on social conditions during the industrial revolution in England. Child labor was the norm, and many children were crippled for life due to labor practices. This is the second time I have read this book. I would highly recommend it. We need to know what goes on around the world.
Dated, but still fun to read
Classic 19th century children's literature. A bit dated, and not particularly politically correct, but not overtly offensive either. It's a cute fable with strong moral lessons.
at almost 60yrs was great fun! What I did not understand then
Read this as a child and going back and reading it now, at almost 60yrs was great fun! What I did not understand then , I understand now. A cute book that makes for a good good night story.
    Great Book!
This was a great version of a classic book! For some reason, not all Kindle books include the pictures, but this one does and they are gorgeous. I really enjoyed re-reading a childhood favorite, without having to actually carry the book with me.
    Brings back memorys.
I got this book because I remembered reading this story as a child and loved it and I found out that I still do. Great read if you want to give great memories to someone or walk down memory lane.

    Title: Dracula [Cherry Hill Edition]
    Author: Bram Stoker
    Narrator: Roger Watson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 16 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-12-12
    Publisher: Cherry Hill Publishing
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 13 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Although myths about vampires had existed since ancient times, Bram Stoker's Dracula is considered by many to be the work that launched the vampire into the human lexicon, and is undoubtedly the most popular and well-known vampire story ever written. Stoker's inspirations for Count Dracula are heavily debated, but most agree that Dracula was based in part on the historical figure of Vlad the Impaler, a fifteenth-century Romanian ruler known for his indiscriminate brutality, which included a taste for impaling people alive on wooden spikes and watching them die in slow agony.

Pay the price for a better narrator
The story...obviously a classic. The narrator...well, as mentioned in another review, as he fades out (I assume for dramatic effect), it is incredibly difficult to hear him. There are several spots with duplicated recording, but the greatest problem, by far is the narrator's mixing up Quincy and Arthur. At the beginning he give Quincy a wrangley American voice and then forever after uses that voice for British born Arthur!!!! It was very annoying. But, you do get what you pay for....
    Dracula done very well.
Would you listen to Dracula [Cherry Hill Edition] again? Why?
Probably wouldn't listen to it again. So many books, so little time!
Have you listened to any of Roger Watsons other performances before? How does this one compare?
I had not previously, but would choose a book narrated by him in the future.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes.
This story is a classic for a good reason
This story is fantastic. Part detective novel, part fantasy.
The narator was great. The voices really suited the characters, particularily the professor.
The audio was not quite perfect, a few time 5 seconds was repeated.
    I definitely enjoyed this book.
    How it all started- Dracula
Ok, so the story was pretty good. I felt as thought the ending was pretty anti-climactic. I am like waiting for this huge battle to unfold between the 4 gentlemen and Dracula and then the time kept getting shorter and I was thinking, "How is he going to cram this epic battle in the end!?". No epic battle. On to the actual narration. Meh. There is a lot of the narrator whispering at the ends of sentences which was pretty annoying and I don't know if this just a quality issue but there were some skips here and there where the audio would repeat itself for about 8-10 seconds. I'd recommend it, but maybe a different version. This one was fine for the price I suppose.
    Badly Edited version
Great book, I have read it before, but wanted to re-read quickly and therefore decided to buy this (cheaper) audio version. Whilst Roger Watson's narration was quite good - his Dracular was excellent - the editing was very poor. On too many occasions sentences were re-read and the original mistakes were left in. Also Quincey, who was an American, started with an American accent but half way through the reading Lord Arthur Holmwood some how acquired the American accent and Quincey became English! This lack of "proof listening" rather spoils this version. Otherwise it would have been excellent value for money for this classic.

    Title: The Beautiful Lady
    Author: Booth Tarkington
    Narrator: Jim Killavey
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 1 hr and 34 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-12-12
    Publisher: Jimcin Recordings
Ratings: 1 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
The Beautiful Lady, is a short novel from Booth Tarkington's early career. The story was originally published in two parts, December of 1904 and January of 1905, in Harper's Magazine, and then as Tarkington's fifth book in May of 1905. Mrs. Landry is The Beautiful Lady, a woman with a soul as beautiful as she it. Who will win her heart? Ansolini, an Italian from Naples now living in Paris? Rufus Poor, a young man who needs to be kept out of trouble or another mysterious man? This breezy read, is a fine introduction to one of Booth Tarkington's early works.
    Members Reviews:
    A light, diverting tale
During a visit to Paris, Booth Tarkington observed the bizarre figure of a young man sitting at a café with a theatre advertisement painted on his (shaven) head. Wondering what could have led someone into such a humiliating situation, he wrote this humorous novelette, first published in "Harper's Monthly."
What resulted is an amusing tale. The protagonist of the story is Ansolini, a young man from Naples who has run through his funds and is desperate for money. Soon after the café incident, he is offered a position acting as an escort and tutor for Rufus Poor, the son of a wealthy man. Ansolini is wholly unsuited to the responsibility, and easily manipulated by Rufus into accompanying him on wild evenings of drink and gambling. In the course of their adventures, Ansolini saves the "beautiful lady" of the story from a rascally fortune- hunter and helps Rufus win her favors. The plot entails love triangles and social intrigue, and the tone is light- hearted.
As Tarkington's biographer notes, "The Beautiful Lady" is "a minor but diverting work." It will mainly be of interest to readers seeking the author's early works, from before he gained fame for his fictional portrayals of the Midwestern US in the early decades of the 20th century.
    Real Beauty Comes From Within
"The Beautiful Lady", is another of the short novels from Booth Tarkington's early career. It was originally published in two parts, December of 1904 and January of 1905, in "Harper's Magazine", and then as Tarkington's fifth book in May of 1905. As with many of Tarkington's other works, it is a bit too predictable, though in this case that doesn't detract too much from the story.
The story appears to sets up a love triangle (or in this case it may be a love square), but it does deviate from that a bit. The story is told from the point of the Italian, Ansolini from Naples, living in Paris who due to being down on his luck is forced into a most embarrassing position of acting as a billboard by shaving his head and having an advertisement for a show placed on the back of his bald head. It is while performing this job, that he nearly meets the "beautiful lady", though he keeps his head down and sees only her feet and the hem of her skirt and hears her lovely voice as it has sympathy for his plight. In fact, Ansolini's feelings are appreciative of her beautiful soul, and not that of romance.
The job gets him out of his immediate need for cash, but he is resolved to find a better line of work, and after writing to a friend he is setup for a position where he needs to appear much older, and so he continues to keep his head shaven as to appear older. The job is for him to take care of Mr. Lambert R.

    Title: Pictures from Italy
    Author: Charles Dickens
    Narrator: Peter Joyce
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 43 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 11-28-11
    Publisher: Assembled Stories
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
In 1843 the material that Dickins had gathered on his trip to America was published with the title American Notes [also produced by Assembled Stories]. The book was viewed with disdain from both sides of the Atlantic and in some quarters, strong disapproval, his criticism having done little for Anglo-American relations. It was no coincidence then, perhaps, that Dickens and his wife, sister in law, five children and assorted servants left England for Italy soon after, in June 1844, for an extensive tour. The plan was to use Genoa as the base for excursions to some of the sights and monuments of the country. In one year the author saw most of Northern Italy and made frequent forays down to Rome and Florence. The family finally left the country via Naples after a terrifying and dangerous visit to the crater of Vesuvius.
Dickens was as strongly opinionated as ever but, nevertheless, kept the promise he made in the Preface and refused to mention politics - though he is not reticent about condemning the poverty. It was more difficult to stop his pen when it came to religious matters. Although he apologised in case of any misunderstanding his comments regarding the excesses of piety and profit, there can be no misunderstanding what he thought - particularly in one episode in Rome involving a holy staircaseAnyone familiar with his fiction will recognise the atmospheric and beguiling descriptions of this fascinating country, rich in art, character and scenery. This alternative travel guide must have been an excellent substitute for those not wealthy enough to make the tour themselves.
    Critic Reviews:
"Peter Joyce is the most remarkable one-man band in audiobook publishing. Joyce, an experienced actor, reads them all himself." (The Independent)
    Members Reviews:
    Dreadfully read
What disappointed you about Pictures from Italy?
Peter Joyce's reading is simply so bad that he has managed to ruin this book. His complete inability to read a full sentence without marking a pause every three words with such arrogance demonstrates his complete and utter lack of comprehension of literary verve. He should have been sacked after having read the title.
