The Crescent Spy

Rosemary Benson's reading of The Crescent Spy had me on the edge of my seat. Voicing so many characters and accents in my minds eye I was at a movie. Can't wait to buy another one of her narrations. Listened to many books where the narrates, she was acting out all the parts. Thank you so much for bring Michael Wallace's book to life.

Great book

Really enjoyed this book! The narration was excellent. Michael Wallace's writing placed me in the middle of the Civil War.

The Crescent Spy

The Crescent Spy was was a well told story set during the American Civil War. The principle character, Josephine Broh a young gifted writer at first thought to be a Confederate spy was recruited by the Pinkerton Agency to gather information that will turn the ride of the war.

This Civil War thriller by Michael Wallace was brilliantly told and performed by Rosemary Benson.

Excellent US Civil War novel

The protagonist in The Crescent Spy is young journalist Josephine Breaux. Most of the novel, all except the first few chapters, is located in New Orleans where Breaux was a journalist with a local newspaper while also serving as a spy for the US government. The novel ends soon after the fall of New Orleans to Union forces.

Author Michael Wallace does a great job of character development with Breaux. It is a superb historical fiction novel. The narration is very well done.

not as much about Jack the ripper

this 20+ hour audiobook is less about Jack the ripper, and more about the authors candidate for the identity, James Michael Maybrick.

the content regarding JTR could easily have been cut down to a handful hours.

The book revolves around James Maybrick, his associates, and sometimes people only vaguely related to him, and not at all to JTR.

the authors theories are presented in a form that reminds me of a political debate. presenting everything as fact, while condemning or mocking other theories. Sometimes presented rather arrogantly and condescending.

Some of the theories are quite interesting, while others seem to be grabbing at straws, built on wishful thinking or assumptions.

This is more a book about Maybrick, free masonry, and the police in London around the time of the JTR events.

If you want this book based on your interest in JTR. Don't! I would suggest a better use of your time is to Google "James Michael Maybrick + jack the ripper" and get your info that way. The book has far too much side-info, and non related facts and/or fictions to be worth it.

however, the book isn't a complete waste, it's interesting on another level.

Think of it akin to start watching the movie "one hour photo" because "Robin Williams is a funny guy". you would be disappointed, not because the movie isn't good, but because you expected something else.

in summary :

interesting book, but too much filler to be worth it purely as a JTR theory book. Google the theory, or hope for a severely abridged version

It is a great series set in Elizabethan times with great atmosphere and characters.

This mystery is the kind you cannot put down . It is totally absorbing, and it is also funny; full of wonderful historical details and interesting characters. The reader is perfect.

Complex, Layered and Thoroughly Entertaining!

I have read most of her books, and this must certainly be Graciela Limón's best work so far. All her writing is resonant and meaningful, but Ximena Godoy is exceptional. Ximena is a complex character of strength, determination, and intellect, but she is also flawed and tragic. The flow of her life calls on all her best qualities and her skills and abilities create the heights she reaches from her most humble beginnings. There is sadness and dramatic lows because of her decisions and behavior as well. For me, a third generation Latina with roots in Mexico, it took me back to my Grandmother's kitchen listening to the stories the grown ups recounted of their experiences and struggles during the Revolution. The historical context is depicted with great care for accuracy and becomes a character in the story of Ximena Godoy. Limón writes without judgement as to good or bad, and only the humanity of Ximena shines through. She leaves the judgement to you. Enjoy and read on!

Intrigue is the word for it...you won't cheer for the protagonist but you keep reading to find out what her passions lead her to next.

A modern woman born before her time...

It was a good read but I was a little unhappy with the ending. I would have liked to hear how she handled herself during that time.

Another Hit

The sons of the Republic are back and they want payback for the events in Freedom. Dane and Bones will need to put their minds, wit and skills together in order to Come up with a crazy scheme to save themselves and get to the bottom of The Republics plan. In pure Dane & Bones style you can expect action, history, humour and those pesky bad guys. Wood and Talbot really know how to entertain and weave a good tale.

Jeffrey Kafer once again puts in a great performance that makes the audiobook a pleasure to listen to. I listened to this in one sitting and really enjoyed it.

I enjoy a mindless action novel on occasion. This story had potential; however, the narrator ruined it by not having the ability to differentiate his voice for different characters.

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is not a book for Sherlockiana fans, or Lovecraftians, but if you like weird for weirdness sake, it might be up your alley.

What could Christian Klaver have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The writing could have used a little tightening, and more familiarity with the Holmes canon and Lovecraftian style.

I was very disappointed by this. It seemed lazy, and not at all in the style of Holmes or Lovecraft.

fun to follow along with Fidelma in a foreign land with dubious authority.

Fidelma and Eadulf are returning home from the last book and chance upon her cousin in Breton as well as the ship's captain from a while ago. The ship is taken by pirates and those men are killed while Fidelma and Eadulf jump into the sea. Fidelma's sense of honor demands she find the culprit. As usual she finds much more. The culprits were easier to discover than the motives, but fun to follow along with Fidelma in a foreign land with dubious authority.

A Bit Disappointing

I am a big Sister Fidelma fan. I read this book on Kindle & was a bit disappointed. The setting for this book is the European continent (as opposed to the Irish island)in the 7th century AD. I found it very frustrating that I couldn't place the location in my mind because I wasn't sufficiently versed in the ancient place names for the area & whether the location was Brittany or Burgundy. I don't know if the paper edition included a map, but a map would have been very enlightening. Actually, an actual map of the setting & a fictitious map of the relation of the fictional locations to each other would have been ideal.

The events of the book occur as Fidelma & Aedulf are returning from the Conference at Atun in Burgandy, France which is the setting of the book immediately preceding this oneThe Council of the Cursed (The Sister Fidelma of Cashel). The pair are onboard a ship when they are attacked by pirates & end up marooned on a small island where they are assisted by a monk. They make their way back to the mainland where they attempt to identify and apprehend the pirates.

While I am aware that the rift between the Celtic Church & Rome was a major component of the time period in which Fidelma lives, the constant encounter of nasty, oppositional clerics over the course of a number of books is beginning to wear on me. Conversely, I felt the differences between the 7th century Irish culture & the culture of Brittany, which is alluded to in the book, could have been further elucidated.

The characters were well drawn, as one would expect from Mr. Tremayne, but the sheer number of new characters was daunting. The plotting was excellent and kept me riveted until the final page.
