I recommend "The Devil's Seal" to anyone who likes a good ...
The scholarship alone behind the Sister Fidelma mysteries makes these stand out, but the stories are compelling, using puzzles, suspense and interesting characters. Fidelma's character has developed increased grace, making her a more likeable person, not so dominating of her husband and partner Edulph. They share more of the credit for solving the crime than in the earlier novels, and the interplay of their characters seems more natural. I recommend "The Devil's Seal" to anyone who likes a good mystery, especially one with an historical setting. It is good for those who love Ireland, too.
    Not bad
A 3.5. Not bad, but not the best in the series, either. As usual, the mystery plot was intricately woven and each time I focused my suspicions on one person, another had to be considered. The problems came in other areas. While I enjoy the history learned in this series, Tremayne relayed most historical details and, worse, plotlines from previous stories in the dialogue between characters. This proved awkward and bogged down the story. I realize dialogue is not Tremayne's strong suit, but it seemed worse than usual here. I still enjoy the characters and, as stated above, the mystery was quite strong. I only wish the journey had proved a little smoother sailing.
    Not Tremayne's best
âThe Devilâs Sealâ reminds me of earlier volumes in the series in which complicated plots sometimes overwhelm genuinely fascinating characters and historical settings in ancient Ireland. But as the relationship between Fidelma and Eadulf developed and as readers were drawn deeper into the world Peter Tremayne so faithfully recreated, the novels themselves grew in clarity and narrative power. By contrast, Fidelmaâs challenge in "The Devil's Seal"âa complicated conundrum involving church politics and multiple murdersâfeels sterile and contrived. By the end, I didnât care who was guilty. But donât judge this usually excellent series by this book.
Murder and Ecclesiastical history in the Dark Ages.
This is one of the latest in the Fidelma mystery series. Set in Ireland in 671 it provides an outstanding mystery wrapped in ecclesiastical history as well. One note of caution, this book follows the events of the previous books and should not be read out of order. The first book in the series is Absolution by Murder which takes place at the Synod of Whitby (664AD).

Another great one, but a missed opportunity
Another great collaboration and stellar job by Caroline Lennon. But a missed opportunity: there is a very important author's note at the front of this book, that was not part of the audible performance. As all-but-this-one the books/stories follow a chronological order, its context is off without that note.

    Publisher's Summary:
In AD 670 Fidelma of Cashel is asked to act as an advisor to the Irish delegation to a church council hostile to the Celtic Church. In an abbey in Burgundy, Bishop Leodegar of Autun has assembled church leaders from all over Western Europe - an assembly that soon descends into chaos. That night one of the delegates is found murdered, his skull crushed, and Fidelma and her companion, Brother Eadulf, are suddenly in the midst of a murder investigation involving some of the most power religious leaders.
Between the autocratic Bishop Leodegar and the malignant abbess Mother Audofleda, a web of sinister intrigue soon spreads. The theft of a priceless reliquary box, the disappearance of women and children, and rumours of a slave trade make this one of the most sinister and deadly puzzles Fidelma and Eadulf have ever faced.

Fidelma unravels the threads and discovers much more than the killer.
Fidelma and Eadulf journey to a Church Council at Autun in the land of the Franks to advise her brother's abbot at the proceedings. Before they arrive an Irish cleric is killed seemingly in a locked room mystery with a Saxon and Briton cleric dispatched in the same room. Fidelma and Eadulf seem perfect investigators given the nationalities involved but the house doesn't admit women. Soon other mysteries are uncovered. Fidelma unravels the threads and discovers much more than the killer.
    Battle Over Rites
    .
The Council of the Cursed by Peter Tremayne (pseudonym of historian Peter Berresford Ellis), is an exceptional historical mystery. It is set during the seventh century in Autun (an ancient French city founded by Augustus Caesar). Leodegar, Bishop of Autun, called a council to fulfill Pope Vitalian's request to determine which rules and rites should prevail in the Western European churches.
Before the council can convene, one of the key officials attending the meeting is murdered. The host Bishop decrees that Sister Fidelma investigate the crime so that the council can proceed in peace. Fidelma and Eadulf agree to investigate, on condition they can be seen as neutral and have the Bishop's full authority.
The case is complicated and the plot full of suspense, intrigue, and numerous plot shifts. Each plot shift contributes layers of additional suspense. Fidelma and Eadulf face multiple barriers, reluctance, and even death threats.
About a year before the Council, Leodegar, the host Bishop, decreed that male clerics be celibate, and if already married, they must give up the family, and divorce their wife, or leave "religious life". Many men, especially those without a "civilian skill" are essentially forced to deny their family. The Bishop then cancels the marriage. What did they do with the wives and children? The answer, although historically accurate, is not pleasant.
The Council of the Cursed is an excellent mystery. The major characters are well drawn, the plot is believable, and the intrigue impressive. The final conclusion is realistic and understandable.

And as the case builds to its crescendo, the sky will darken and a great storm will loom over the city.
    Members Reviews:
    Good first effort
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Axeman's Jazz?
Semi- spoiler alert. The author used a technique I quite liked. There are three separate groups who try to solve the murders for three separate reasons following three separate leads. All discover the "trurh" but each discovers only a part of the truth. It is only the reader who knows it all.
It should be stated that the author takes considerable poetic license with the truth.
What do you think the narrator could have done better?
This must have been a challenge considering the polyglot nature of New Orleans and the characters. Still some things were jarring. For example, the reader pronounces "penchant", a perfectly cromulent English word as if it were French and pronounces "sangfroid", a common French term, as "sang freud". Some of the voicing of the female characters is a tad too precious as well.
    Any additional comments?
Louis Armstrong is one of the characters which caused me to buy a couple albums from back when, you know, music sounded good.
Ingenious, eye-opening mystery, very poorly read.
The Axeman's Jazz is an ingenious and provocative portrait of post-World-War-One New Orleans; the mystery is good and the characters, who range across the entire spectrum of New Orleans society avoid stereotyping. Everyone with an interest in the contemporary charms of this great city should read this novel set in its past.
Everyone should read this, but it is seriously unfortunate how poorly Christopher Ragland reads it. Clearly a book like this is a genuine challenge to any reader; there are a dozen or more main characters, and several times that secondary characters, and each has a distinctive accent, nationality, country of origin, speech pattern. Mr. Ragland simply does ot display that chops to pull this off; when he reads in his natural voice, he is clear and easy to listen to, but when he tries to read in the voice of the women, or Irishmen or Italians, or the Creoles or Cajuns with whom this book is so well-populated he just fails to portray anything believable. His rendition of the African-American male characters isn't as jarring. I suspect this is just a casting problem; the actor just lacks training in all of these accents; I haven't heard any of his other readings, but I wouldn't hesitate to buy a different audiobook if he were reading it. Lots of pronunciation errors, too. Doesn't anyone proof-listen to these books, anyone who knows how to pronounce words like "banquette"?
A poor reading performance really mars a terrific novel.
    Fantastic book
Such an amazing book. I'm sad I'm done with it. The narrator was good except for his attempt at women's voices.

In the Swinging Sixties, a battle for the soul of the city is fought between cops and criminals, the corrupt and the corrupted.
November 1968. Judy Garland is performing drunk at the Palladium and the city of London is about to catch fire - literally. Summonded to a gas explosion, Detective Sergeant Cathal Breen unearths a shocking discovery beneath the rubble: Mind-bending paintings by Bridget Riley and Peter Blake... and the garroted body of Jacob Pugh, a playboy god in the art world. With Detective Helen Tozer, Breen must infiltrate the artistic demimonde of a volatile and increasingly murderous city.
Seen through the eyes of an irresistible pair of detectives, the real London comes in view in The Kings of London: a gritty metropolis thrives in the shadows beyond the spotlights, and all manner of vice is committed in the name of liberation.
    Members Reviews:
    Not cutesy-cozy, but not hard-boiled; a delight
This second in a series is an excellent mystery, with storylines that hold up for all 13 hours, quirky and well drawn characters, great period setting, some humour. Main character Breen gets slightly darker through his experiences in novels 1 and 2: If the series continues for many instalments, he could became a Rebus!
To the squeamish (me): One corpse description near the beginning and one near the end are a little grisly (and as in the first novel, a small passage in the middle could bother sensitive animal lovers). Apart from that, no graphic violence but some good suspense. I work with technology all day, so I welcome older mysteries or period pieces that dont hang on digital devices. And my inner social history geek loves Shaws 68-69 London. Of course the plot is good but secondary to the other elements and is as much about petty office politics and corruption as the BIG corruption described in the blurb -- more about how mundane compromises come in shades of grey.
Stewart's narration continues to be excellent EXCEPT that some of his womens voices are too shrill, almost Pythonoesque. As in the first novel, I found this jarring for the first few chapters but then either my ear adjusted or he found a rhythm.
I so wish there were a dozen in this series rather than two. I stumbled across the first as a Whispersync bargain and thought Id found more in Kindle, but it appears that the novel is published under different titles in the UK perhaps so shop carefully.
I don't usually rate a detective novel 5 stars - but this deserves it as solid, smart entertainment that provokes a little though but no angst.
    Captures the Atmosphere
What did you love best about The Kings of London?
I was 17 years old and living in the UK in 1968, and as far as I'm concerned the author captured he atmosphere of Britain at that time perfectly. Coupled with the fact that I really cared about the characters, and the story-line was compelling, I give two thumbs-up for this book. Nice narration too!
The dreadful narration couldn't ruin it
If you like police procedurals, this is a terrific story, and one that doesn't require that you have read She's Leaving Home, the first in the Breen/Tozer series. It's 1968 in Swinging London, but it's not swinging for Detective Sergeant Cathal Breen.

    Members Reviews:
The worst book out of the Jack Howard Series
I have pretty much enjoyed the Jack Howard Series so far until I got to this book. I really wanted to like it because of the Egyptian subject and the adventure you would imagine that would come along with it. BUT I was disappointed! As I listened more and more to the book, the narrative began droning on and on and on about military campaigns and different Officers in the army in Egypt and it just got away from the exciting adventure that the other books in the series had. I did get through it but I found myself daydreaming and not paying attention because I felt like I was back in school with a boring professor just droning on about dates and times. I really was disappointed with the ending. The climax just ends just where you should start the adventure!
I do like David Gibbins as an author because of the cool archeology and historical tales he incorporates in his books but this one unfortunately fails in my opinion. Hope the next one is better!
Tried To Finish, But Gave Up
Would you try another book from David Gibbins and/or James Langton?
I've heard David Gibbins writes great stories, but this isn't one of them. The narrator was fine, it's the book that's boring.
What was most disappointing about David Gibbinss story?
I'm at the halfway point, and from the synopsis and cover, I expected to be reading about Akhenaten, but he's barely even been mentioned up to this point. However, if you're interested in the minutia of British rifle cartridges from the 1880's, this book is for you. Nearly the entire book thus far has been about Britain's participation in the Sudan during the Mahdist War. Which is not what I was looking for. I'm a huge Egyptology buff, and was expecting something about... oh, maybe a Pharaoh. It's barely keeping my attention, and I have to keep going back because I find I have zoned out from boredom. At this point, I'm not even sure what's going on with the 1880's storyline, I've completely lost interest over the last hour.
Have you listened to any of James Langtons other performances before? How does this one compare?
    First book of Langton's.

    More I want more
Having read all the books in this series I am anxious for the next. Ryan has patiently and believably developed the personalities and relationship between Nell and Will. The supporting characters have substance and credibility and come in and out of the series to help build the drama and mystery. It is fun to visit the fascinating city of Boston in the 1860s. Ryan evokes this richly layered period in US history and carefully weaves the influences of Boston Brahmins, Irish immigrants , Harvard and post civil war America into a good story worth reading

Robert O'Hara Burke (1821-1861) was one of the great Victorian explorers. In 1860 he was appointed to lead the Victorian Exploring Expedition, which aimed to cross the Australian continent from south to north. The expedition left Melbourne on Monday, 20 August 1860 with a total of 19 men, 27 (rum fuelled) camels, and 23 horses.
The expedition was dogged by disputes and poor leadership decisions from the start. Even at the first staging post the second in command and the medical officer resigned. Burke left groups of men, horses and camels at staging posts along the way to provide a supply chain of provisions for the return journey. However the supply chain was poorly managed and provisions ran low.The small team of Burke, William Wills, John King, and Charley Gray set off on an impetuous dash for the northern coast and reached the mangroves on the estuary of the Flinders River, near where the town of Normanton now stands, on the 9th of February 1861. Weakened by starvation and exposure, progress on the return journey was slow and hampered by the tropical monsoon downpours. Gray died four days before they reached the staging point at Cooper's Creek. The other three rested for a day when they buried him.
They finally reached the meeting point on 21 April 1861, 9 hours after the rest of the party had given up waiting and left, leaving a note and some food, as they had not been relieved by the party supposed to be arriving from base camp.
The final three made a valiant attempt to find their way back from the desert, and despite much help given to them by local Aborigines, by the time a search party arrived, there was only one survivor left of the original party.

In the books this is where we meet Theresa, Sharpes tv love. But the story is more, greed, desperation, fight and flight, and a decision of huge morality. Expertly written, each chapter leading to more intensity. Richard Sharpe is a great hero, but he has friends willing to follow him, and from theses characters we learn snippets of history which show the detailed research taken before writing even starts. This then shows why Cornwell has been the master of historical fiction for nearly half a century.
    Another classic
You always know with Cornwell what you are going to get. This is Cornwell at his best. Dig in!
    Sharpe's Gold
Great story with admiral research. Must say the ending sagged somewhat. Didn't like the bed hopping part. It made Sharpe somewhat shallow. Overall it was a good and interesting story
    Sharpest gold
Another great read by Mr Corwell. I felt some of the chapters were a bit of a specie filler but over all it is dam good read.
    Sharpe's At It Again!
This series is simply great stuff, real Boys' Own style adventures and Sharpe's Gold is no exception. Sharpe is drawn like a magnet to history's most explosive moments and no more so than in this one. This is a man who can take on all manner of enemies at long odds and come up trumps, though often at personal cost to himself.
This time he's sent on an impossible mission and in El Catholico he meets a charismatic and stylish partisan who is as deadly as Sharpe himself. Of course, this is Sharpe, a man who can march for days in high temperatures without a wash and still have more luck with the opposite sex than most people do in their best togs in the UKs clubs and bars on a Saturday night! Cornwell could make millions more revealing how he does it!
In reality, if you've enjoyed the previous eight books in the series and want some more then Sharpe's Gold hits the spot!
