    Title: Everybody Dies
    Author: Lawrence Block
    Narrator: Mark Hammer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 11 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-07-07
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 123 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
In Everybody Dies, Matt is finally leading a comfortable, almost respectable life - until he helps an unlikely friend uncover a nameless enemy. The Big Apple seems to be mellowing, now that the crime rate is down and gentrification is sweeping the old neighborhoods. But when a hoodlum buddy from the past asks Matt to investigate the murders of two employees, the spruced-up sidewalks seem as mean as ever.
Suddenly, Matt finds himself in a world where every step leads him through a mine field, and no man's survival can be taken for granted.
Well-crafted characters, action-packed plots, and gritty, realistic settings have earned Lawrence Block multiple Edgar and Shamus Awards. With his dramatic performance, narrator Mark Hammer expertly captures all the restless rhythms and street-smart language.
    Critic Reviews:
Block's seamless weave of thought and action, and his matchless gift for dialogue that is true, funny and revealing, have seldom been on more effective display. The pages leading up to the climax have an almost Shakespearean feel for human resignation in the face of mortality. (Publishers Weekly)

    Excellent
I had a hard time taking pauses in listening to this book. Good story and excellent narration.
    Ruined by the NARRATOR!
I have read every Matthew Scudder book prior to this one and loved them all. Lawrence Block knows NYC and he knows his character. This series is character driven. You keep reading because you come to relate to the character and you want to know what happens next in his life.
This narrator makes Scudder sound like a doddering old drunk working on his 10th bourbon and trying to keep his face from hitting the bar when he passes out. He does NOT sound like the man who lives with the beautiful, sexy Elaine, or who can talk his way in and out of so many situations. He sounds BORING, befuddled and banal. He puts me to sleep.
And when I first heard Mark Hammer's version of TJ, I almost cried. This smart, savy, cool street kid, struggling to make himself better, sounds like a dumb white-boy cartoon version of a young, hip, black man. It's disgraceful.
I am NOT finishing this download, but I AM racing to buy the book and go back to reading the Matthew Scudder I know and love.
I gave this a 3 star Overall and Story because I KNOW Lawrence Block writes great books and couldn't stand to rate him any lower. If I had listened to this never having read the previous books in the series, I would have thought it was all 1 star drivel!
Matt Scudder is a modern Philip Marlowe !
The story is somber, witty , hardboiled. Lawrence Block is a great and probably understated writer ; his characters are powerful and captivating and the New York "ambiance" absolutely faboulous.
    Another great story!
All the Scuder stories are great, but this one has a depth to it that makes it irresistible. Narrator Hammer brought the characters to life. Highly recommended.
    Worst of the series
Why LB thought he should move into multiple gory deaths with no redeeming features is a mystery to this reader....maybe it's a new popular genre that's a moneymaking venture
After listening through to the end, skipping over repetitive sad and gory scenes, my main reaction is Yuck!

The Wheel of Darkness shines Bright!
The Preston/Douglas team, write the kind of novels you can't put down. Partly due to the fact that, they write from factual historical and well researched information. I deeply enjoy getting myself lost in one of their books. Wheel of Darkness was a great story about good and evil. I was inspired, astounded and totally captured by every word. This book's story took me into a whole new world I'd only read about on the internet and seen on Nationa Geographic. I enjoy the ever continuing storyline, which follows agent Pendergast's like experiences and adventures. I do hope that like with Relic, The Wheel of Darkness makes it to the big screen someday. In my head I have modern actors/actresses of today that I know would be perfect for the part of the characters in this novel. I have explored and experienced schools of thoughts, while reading Wheel of Darkness, that I'd never entertained before. It was a unique journey and very entertaining. It has been enlightening and continues to open my literary mind to worlds I've only dreamed about. I strongly recommend any Douglas/Preston novel. It is a read that will change your reading experience for the better. I won't give away any details of this book. All I can say is try something different, you'll surprise yourself.
Don't Bother with the abridged version.
The abriged version of this audiobook leaves so much to be desired, it is not worth wasting a credit on it. Get the unabridged version much better.
    Don't get abridged version
I love the Pendergast novels. Unfortunately ,BY MISTAKE, somehow got the abridged verson. Some of the transitions were abrupt and didn'T make sense... total bummer.
Not bad, gets a bit far fetched.
What did you love best about The Wheel of Darkness?
A X L Pendergast, and the Narrator. It moves along quite well.
Would you recommend The Wheel of Darkness to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes, as long as they were Pendergast fans.
What does Rene Auberjonois bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Always good to listen to, he pulls you into the story.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Hmm, I don't think I would make a film about this book, I think it might not do so well at the box office.
    Any additional comments?
The authors tend to wander a bit far into the spiritual realms for my taste. I liked that Pendergast was always a very logical chap and was a bit disappointed with his mystical straying s. Still a good listen though.

    Title: The Bookwoman's Last Fling
    Subtitle: A Cliff Janeway Novel
    Author: John Dunning
    Narrator: George Guidall
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-08-06
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 203 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Tempted out of his bookstore into the world of horseracing, Janeway accepts an invitation from wealthy horse trainer H.R. Geiger to travel to Idaho and look at some rare first-edition books. The books are stunning, flawless children's classics that render the usually eloquent Janeway speechless. It's a collection worth millions of dollars, a fact that Janeway would be happy to discuss with Mr. Geiger if the man wasn't dead. Janeway becomes convinced that someone has been cherry-picking the book collection for personal profit. Soon he's off on Geiger's cold trail, to the California Races at Golden Gates Fields and Santa Anita Park.
Bringing together his inside knowledge of both books and horseracing, John Dunning provides another memorable, hard-boiled detective adventure, filled with all the authenticity and delicious trivia that fans have come to expect from the Bookman series.
    Critic Reviews:
"Dunning's exceptional gifts at plotting and characterization should help win him many new readers, while the horse-racing angle is sure to lure Dick Francis fans." (Publishers Weekly)
"Bursting with inside dope about forged autographed copies and other dastardly examples of book fraud...it's great fun thumbing the pages with Janeway, who knows his business and takes a keen, almost sensual pleasure in a virgin edition." (The New York Times Book Review)

    Wish I could enter "unrated"
Because I listened to only a couple of hours -- and part of that time I had my ear buds out so I could skip a part. Just couldn't take it anymore -- and all of this for reasons that might very well have been unrelated to the central plot.
The problem? One of the major characters -- presumably -- owned and operated a rescue farm for old or abused horses. Fine and dandy -- I admire people like that more than I can say. BUT.. but... as the story continued, as Janway began to get to know this character, there seemed to be an almost unless litany of stories of abused horses, so much that I just couldn't take it. I don't want to read -- or listen to -- stories of abused animals of any kind. Does it exist? Of course. But all sorts of things go on in this world that I don't want to spend leisure time hearing about. It's just too painful.
What a shame! I've both listened to and read every other one of the Cliff Janway books at least twice, some three times, over the years. I love them. I love the book trivia, the tales of collectors, of the obsession with books, some part of which I'm chagrined to admit I share. You can imagine how disappointed I was to have to deep-six this last one in the series.
But I can't listen to accounts of horribly abused horses. Life is too short, y'know?
Another Good Book in the Cliff Janeway Series
I like the books by John Dunning. If you are new to the Cliff Janeway series, I suggest that you read them in order.
    1. Booked to Die
    2. The Bookman's Promise (currently not being offered on Audible, hopefully they will bring it back)
    3. The Bookman's Wake
    4. The Bookwoman's Last Fling
The Bookwoman's Last Fling has a bit more character development, and many more leads to chase down.
Readers, who like the Cliff Janeway, enjoy the journey of the story besides just trying to get to the end.

Grafton doing a good job keeping the mysteries fresh
So I pointed out in my last review that I prefer Kinsey working on her own and that is exactly what you get with H is for Homicide. This book went very fast for me as compared to the other books. I think because the story is confined to such a narrow point once Kinsey goes undercover. Yep, thatâs right Kinsey is undercover and unable to break cover without risking not her life but the lives of some of those around her.
Even though the story spans from Santa Theresa to Los Angeles, Grafton does a fantastic job of making you feel just as trapped and confined in the environment as Kinsey is with her precarious situation. I think some of the appreciation also must go to Judy Kaye and her narration. She emotes and helps the reader build the world in their head. The story moves at a very quick pace and the action scenes convey a profound sense of tension of excitement. I developed a true appreciation for some Kinseyâs abilities as clues âclickâ in her head and she is able to put the big picture together.
I also liked the integration of more of Lt. Dolanâs character and you can tell he may not fully like detectives but he has a great deal of respect for Kinsey.
    Must read mystery series
What can you say about Sue Grafton other than she is a great mystery writer. Kinsey Milhone is an ex-cop and has her own detective agency and never much of a sex life if that what your looking for, go elsewhere. This is a traditional gumshoe story with action and danger for our heroine. After some spotty success writing books, Grafton changed to writing screenplays for TV and movies. With the success of her first Alphabet series book ' A is for Alibi' in 1982 it has continued to date. I first discovered her books when I came across 'G is for Gumshoe' (pub 1990) in a recycle center in 2000, I proceeded to local bookstores and Amazon to acquire all of this series up until the current at the time 'O is For Outlaw'. It's always great when you come across a great series in progress as it's a joy just reading book after book from a great writer. Much like 'binge watching TV series on Netflix nowadays. Only problem with an ongoing series is waiting for the next book. Grafton has done only a couple of yearly books and mostly every other year since 'P is for Peril' in 2001. It is now up to just plain 'X' in 2015 and will end with 'Z is for Zero'. I'm hoping she has Y & Z completed as she is 75 now and I'm 70 and don't want to miss the conclusion of this great series.
Its ok. I really don't understand the title because ...
Its ok. I really don't understand the title because its more about insurance fraud and a tourette syndrome afflicted psycho than Purnell's murder investigation. I cant believe the cops screwed up a sting operation and put an informant in danger. I cant understand why the psycho was so obsessed with the Bibianna woman or why he had to cut her mother's face open because she left him.

    Huge Disappointment
I have listened to all 14 previous JP Beaumont novels. They were great!! I could NOT believe the disappointment (to put it mildly), I felt when I began to listen to this horrific tragedy. Who ever decided to change narrators and not offer the unabridged version should be shot!!!! This was disgusting!!! The narrator was horrible not too mention not even close to Gene Engene as JP Beaumont. I am contacting Audible for a refund and the author to find out who is responsible for such a devastating decision. Don't waste your money or a credit you will be sorry.
    Entertaining
I listen to at least one book a month and this was a great book. The narrator was great and the quick humor fun.
    Where's gene
The story was sorely lacking and not your typical jp Beaumont series if you have listen to the previous audiobooks with gene you missed that characteristic he brings to the story
    It's Abridged!
Would you listen to Birds of Prey again? Why?
I seldom read a book twice but I might in this case. Why? Well, what do birds have to do with anything? I'm wondering if the title refers to something not included in the abridged version.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The default answer as to the favorite character must, I suppose, be JP Beaumont. The only character who stood out as a separate voice in the narration was his new Grandfather-In-Law.
    Any additional comments?
I think the setting is a great way to change our perception of JP Beaumont as a cop, to JP Beaumont as a private investigator. The change in narrators was jarring at first. The new voice seems flat in comparison with Gene Engene, but the second time I came back to the story I found myself going with the flow.
    New narrator
This is another great book by J A Jance; however, we did prefer the previous books narrator-Gene Engene.

    Dance of Death
This was my first one. And I wanted to stay in the car, listening to it. since downloaded two more and each just keeps getting better and better. I don't know what I will do when I have heard them all.
You have to listen to this one.
    Good listen
Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?
    Yes, but I am a fan of A X L Pendergast.
If youve listened to books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child before, how does this one compare?
A good listen, not the best, but not bad. Relic was my favourite.
Have you listened to any of Rene Auberjonoiss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Always consistently good.
Could you see Dance of Death being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
No, Relic would be good though.
Diogenes is back and he has a score to settle
Dance of Death is a fast-paced thriller that never lets up and keeps the reader turning pages, so to speak.
Pendergast is back, but this time his evil brother is out to finally extract his revenge on the FBI Agent. Targeting those close to Pendergast (friends and colleagues), the evil Diogenese embarks on a quest to methodically murder them while framing Pendergast and while planning on carrying out the "perfect" crime.
I can't say more without giving away important plot points, but I will say "read this book!" You will not be disappointed.
    good for the abridged version
I was surprised that the story did not suffer to much being abridged. It's not as good as other Pendacast stories as its missing the more super natural accepts of other stories but its still very good.
    Not as good as Brimstone.
Would you try another book from Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child and/or Rene Auberjonois?
Preston and Child, absolutely; Mr Auberjonois, maybe.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    No favourite.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Rene Auberjonois?
I'm undecided. Obviously if I wanted to listen to the book badly enough, I would tolerate
Mr Auberjonois's delivery, but there are better narrators out there.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No.
    Any additional comments?
The story did hold my attention, but I felt it was let down a little by the narration. I understand Scott Brick is in high demand, but I thought he brought something special to other books I've read by the boys, especially Riptide, Ice Limit and Brimstone.

    bad reader
I had to stop listening to this book because the reader sounded like a news anchor rather than a storyteller. Clipped and monotonous in tone.
    Shoot the narrator !
The narrator has the worst, most phoney Scots accent I have ever heard. He murdered the Scots language, mispronounced dozens of well-known placenames, and even tried a phoney US accent... ouch ! He pronounced Kirkcaldy as Kirk-cal-dee... painful to the ears. In no way does he do justice to Ian Rankin's writing.
    Better and better
Seriously, each book is better than the preceding one. This book was great! Ian Rankin is simply brilliant.
We learned about the young Johnny Rebus. A new villain kept Rebus, and readers, on edge. Too bad John is off the wagon, though.
The narrator was not as bad as some listeners have said. He wasn't as good as the previous narrators but he was easy to listen to.
I am so into this series. Can't wait to start the next one.
Not a fan of the reader
We have had the same voice for 9 books and this new voice really took some time to get used too. Made me not want to finish the book.
    Awful, awful monotoned narration.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I would only recommend this audio book if you, like me, are trying to go through the Inspector Rebus series in order and you really need it to be audio. I'm only partway through and I'm severely tempted to stop and buy a Kindle or printed version instead. This guy's reading has all the pizzazz of an old fashioned radio weather reporter.
I think this may be only the second book in my life where I'll try accelerating the speed to 1.25x in the app, just to get it over faster.

    Poor Narration
I really enjoy the Shane Scully series, but the narration was so bad it distracted from the story. Try one read by Scott Brick.
    Lots of fast-paced fun action
The book manages to do something that action books rarely accomplish: it is both funny and taut. It is a thriller with a sense of humor that actually works. I've read a fair number this autho's work and he is not usually this good. He tries hard, though and THIS time, he got it right. Give this one a listen. It's worth it.
    Ratso Rizzo lives again!
I loved this book! Just cannot get over the fact that "Nicky" charactor sounds sooo much like the Ratso Rizzo charactor from Midnight Cowboy! Maybe Joe Pantoliano could play him in a movie version? I'd love to see it. Book is one that grabs and holds ya!
    Great dialog, light entertainment.
Great book. Some of the best dialog I've listed to in years. Plot-twists are a little far fetched, but I highly receommend it to anyone who is looking for light entertainment.
    Just like on tv
If you like books that sound as fantastic and ridiculous as the average television cop drama, then this is the book. Full of cliches and far-fetched plot twists, it is absolutely believable that this book was written by the man who has brought us "Hunter," "The A-Team," and "Rip-Tide." These are basic entertainment-good to waste time and immediately forget.

    Publisher's Summary:
And big trouble it is, not just for his friend, but for Billy Bob himself- in the form of Wyatt Dixon, a recent prison parolee sworn to kill Billy Bob as revenge for both his imprisonment and his sister's death, both of which he blames on the former Texas lawman. As the mysteries multiply and the body count mounts, the listener is drawn deeper and deeper into the tortured mind of Billy Bob Holland, an incredibly complex hero, tormented by the mistakes of his past and driven to make things - all things - right. What makes him especially fascinating is that beneath the guise of justice for the weak and downtrodden lies a tendency for violence that at times becomes more terrifying than the danger he is trying to eradicate.
    Critic Reviews:
"Those who relish Burke's patented mix of supercharged violence and overheated passions are in for a treat." (Publishers Weekly)
"[He]... does a wonderful job of contrasting that harmonious and peaceful setting with the jarring dissonance of failed human relations." (Booklist)

    Another Formulaic Burke Novel
This performance is head and shoulders above Cimarron Rose with it's irritating and intrusive dobro interludes. No interludes here, but Burke started phoning it in about 10 years ago. His books have become as formulaic as Dean Koontz. There is always the creepy, sexually deviant psychopath, the rich family that is involved in some dirty dealings, the cardboard cut-out mob guys who are somehow involved, and the hero who gets sexually involved with every female character, normally to his detriment. That said, even the worst Burke is better than 90% of what is out there. Will Patton, as usual, does an astonishing job of bringing Burke's characters to life.
    Bitterroot
James Lee Burke is one of my favorite authors. He doesn't write anything that's bad. Will Patton is SOOOOO good it is no wonder he had narrated most of Burke's Books. Great Listen

Always an immersive experience. Brilliant metaphors, deep characters that you truly care about, engrossing plot lines.
Will Patton is the PERFECT narrator. Always.
    DISAPPOINTMENT IN AUDIO PERFORMANCE
Storyline, somewhat interesting. However the reader mispronounced many names and other words. Glaring error is Raton Pass.
