Publisher's Summary:
To save the man she secretly loves, a young lady embarks on a dangerous deception in award-winning author Elizabeth Mansfield's delightful Regency romance.
It's a scandal that 27-year-old Sarah Stanborough is still unwed. Despite her matchmaking mother's fervent wishes, Sarah refuses to encourage the eminently eligible John Phillip North, marquis of Revesne. The arrogant bounder has actually fought duels to keep her potential suitors at bay.
Only one man attracts the independent spinster: handsome Edward Middleton, her young cousin's guardian, who detests the frivolous gossip and shallow flirtations of London society as much as she does. But when Lord North threatens Edward's life, Sarah knows there's only one way to save the man who has stolen her heart. Yet even she can't predict the consequences of the risky charade she is about to set in motion.
Members Reviews:
A satisfying read
I love all of Elizabeth Mansfield's books. She makes her characters seem like people you might meet somewhere and enjoy a conversation with them.
This book is a tangled affair about people believing they are in love but the reader can see that they are "in love" with the wrong person. Sarah sees herself as hopelessly on the shelf although she is doggedly pursued by Lord North. Her cousin Corianne wants to marry Lord North, and Edward wants to marry Corianne.
Lord North is incorrectly called that because he is Marquess of Revesne and therefore should be called Lord Revesne. There are a few other errors in the book.
I read some of her books several years ago, but I'm trying to re-read all the ones I can find.
A Recency romance with humor, surprises, and a sweet love story.
This book is about Miss Sarah Stanborough, Lord North, Miss Corianne Lindsay, and Squire Edward Middleton. It is an interesting story about love and changeable attitudes of the main characters as time goes on. I enjoyed this book and I recommend it.
Nice clean read
Was a very compelling storyline. This author keeps her stories clean as a traditional regency romance should be. Had a hard time putting the book down. Enjoy the read.
cliched, cloying and annoying Regency Romance....
Synopsis:
LOVE'S DARING GAMBIT . . .
"There's No Time To Explain!" Sarah said. "Come and sit down beside me. Quickly!" She pulled him to the sofa. The door had been left open so that anyone passing would be bound to see them.
Sarah placed his arms firmly around her waist. "Now Edward, try not to be too shocked. I want you to kiss me."
"What?" Edward gaped at her. "You can't mean."
"Yes, I do!" She threw her arms around him and lifted her face to his. "Kiss me . . . as if you really mean it!"
My review:
Duel of Hearts is based on that tried and true storyline of the shy heroine, secretly in love with the hero, but he loves another. The heroine, as a selfless act, pretends to be lovers with the hero to help him ensnare his "true love", the heroine twenty year old cousin.
While I've seen the story done before, this particular telling was one of the worst. The book spends more time of the hero's love interest-the heroine's vain, stupid and mean cousin, than on the heroine. The heroine is a door mat, and gladly allows herself to be a door mat to everyone including the hero.
