    Title: Casting the Runes
    Author: M. R. James
    Narrator: Roy Macready
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 52 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-30-16

    Publisher's Summary:
    M. R. James (1862-1936) was provost of King's College, Cambridge, and Eton College. He was a highly regarded scholar and academic in his time but today is remembered for his ghost stories, which are considered among the finest in the genre. Here is one of them: "Casting the Runes".

got this for the short story Casting the Runes. Which the movie Curse of the demon is based on.
    Night of the Demon
This is the story that the film "Night of the Demon" is based upon. It was interesting to finally read it.
One of the great voices in horror
    First, about M.R. James:
He is excellent! He is one of the best, most underappreciated voices in horror. Lovecraft admired him. His stories, though old, are quite scary. Also, they are very well written. As Chabon points out in his intro, Poe and Lovecraft weren't the best literary stylists. Most people cite "Oh, Whistle..." as James's best story, but I think I'll vote for "Count Magnus." Certainly all of them are good. More than that, they are REQUIRED reading for anyone who wants to have a basic understanding of horror literature. It is also a hell of a good read.
    Second, this edition:
I was greatful to a previous reviewer for explaining the asterisks. There are asterisks without footnotes all over this book, as well as other Oxford University Press books (The Monk). Now we know that these are residue from a previous edition that HAD footnotes. Perhaps you might want to get that version.
However, I take great issue with the disparaging of Michael Chabon's essay on M.R. James. If you don't get the edition with his introduction, I recommend going to the bookstore and reading through it anyway. His comments are very illuminating on James and ghost stories in general.
Casting the Runes (Fantasy and Horror Classics) M. R. James
An ancestor to ghost-story books and it has stood the test of time well. A good antidote to American-dominated ghost books. Worth reading.
Night of the Demon Movie Novel
Not really like the 1950's era movie, "Night of the Demon" but taken alone this novel is suspenseful leaving the reader waiting to turn the next page.

Almost wish there was such a lovely shop.
    Good Story!
Very interesting & Scarey Story, also was a Great episode of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour starring Leslie Nielsen!
A good short story, if not a little confusing
I've been thinking about getting the story for a while. It's simple enough, a father and his son visit a mysterious magic shop. The visit begins in the standard fashion, but it evolves into a series of strange events that continues to concern the father. The child seems to enjoy himself thoroughly.
It's a wholesome story, but my concern comes with some of the grammar and language. Some of it was just confusing. I use the dictionary on a few words and found no entry (A great feature of the Kindle app), and in a few places i tripped upon grammar that just seemed out of whack.
All in all - a good short read. Very descriptive.
    Successfully Magical!
Excellent, but it needs footnotes related to when it was written in the early 20th century to put its various references into better context.
The illustrations were successfully magical but sometimes didn't follow the text.
The magician seems based on Alfred Hitchcock's TV episode with the clerk looking like David
Opatoshu, who's probably best remembered for hos role on Star Trek as Anan 7 in "a Taste of Armageddon.
    Enjoy!
    Loved it!
Gip and his father wander into a London magic shop for a look around. The proprietor playfully shows off his magic skills for the boy. At a point, the magic starts to get a little too genuine. And that is when the story starts to get a bit creepy.
    Loved it!

    The "second" American Revolution
This is the perfect complement to Whirlwind, a new history of the Revolutionary War that makes clear just how fragile the new independence of this nation was. And Quartet focuses on the period after the military victory, when the new Americans figured out how to become a governable nation. BTW, we're still figuring it out; and the issues that drove the debate then (strong federal control vs independent states) continue today.

Publisher: Spokenworld Audio & Ladbroke Audio Ltd
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 1 votes
    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
Considered by many to be the foremost author of the traditional ghost story, M. R. James was a distinguished scholar who spent his entire adult life in the academic atmospheres of Eton and Cambridge. His classic supernatural tales draw on the trepidations of the everyday, in which documents and objects unleash ghastly forces, often in enclosed confinements and nighttime settings where the imagination runs riot.
From isolated country houses to remote inns, ancient churches and vast libraries... These locations deliver intolerable menace from malevolent spirits seeking vengeance and harm. Eighty years on, these stories have lost none of their power to unnerve and disturb.
This new volume includes four tales which have been adapted for audio, expertly narrated by actor David Troughton: 'Number 13', 'The Tractate Middoth', 'Lost Hearts' and 'A View from a Hill'.
About the reader: an established stage and television actor, David Troughton's credits include Father Brown, The Café, Outnumbered, New Tricks, Midsomer Murders, Heartbeat, Fingersmith, Born and Bred, Casualty 1907, All the King's Men, Trevor's World of Sport, Drop the Dead Donkey, Kavanagh QC, Cider with Rose, Ted and Alice, Paradise Heights, Chips with Everything, Crime and Punishment and The Last Detective.
David's association with Doctor Who is vast and varied; he is probably best remembered as King Peladon in the Third Doctor adventure 'The Curse of Peladon' and as Professor Winfold Hobbes in Midnight, alongside David Tennant. He has also appeared in two other television serials, The War Games and The Enemy of the World, as well as voicing a huge variety of audiobooks and plays.
    Critic Reviews:
"I have given M. R. James the title of genius, an accolade which should not be lightly bestowed." (Ruth Rendall)
"A writer of great supernatural imagination, a master of style and purity.... I believe that it is unlikely his ghost stories will ever be surpassed." (Christopher Lee)

    Genres: Classics, British Literature
    Publisher's Summary:
William Hope Hodgson (1877-1918) was an English author. He produced a large body of work including horror, fantastic fiction, and science fiction stories.
'The Baumoff Explosive' (sometimes known as 'Eloi, Eloi, Lama Sabachthani') was first published in 1919. This story is one of Hodgson's most powerful and disturbing and is especially relevant to modern times because of its themes of blasphemy, religious mania, obsession with the crucifixion of Jesus, and suicide bombing.
A group of friends is discussing the rumour that a strange new explosive has been invented by a man named Baumoff, which has the effect of creating a temporary area of darkness. One of those present describes his last meeting with Baumoff - a scientist who is also profoundly Christian and obsessed with the crucifixion.
Baumoff believes that aspects of the crucifixion story - in particular the sky turning black between the sixth and ninth hour - have a rational, scientific basis. He believes the human psyche can affect the aether and impede the transmission of light.
Baumoff demonstrates how a tiny quantity of a chemical compound, when crushed and burned, creates a region of temporary darkness. Baumoff then goes on to demonstrate what happens when the substance is 'burned' (metabolised) within his own body. While his friend watches in horror, Baumoff's heart rate and respiration increase dangerously, and he begins driving metal spikes into his hands and feet to simulate the pain of Christ's crucifixion.
The narrator begs him to stop his demonstration, but Baumoff insists that the narrator only observe and take careful note. But as the experiment continues, things become increasingly sinister...and it becomes clear that Baumoff has unleashed forces which he cannot control.
