A little slow

I enjoy Susan Wiggs' books, but I found this book to be a little slow. Great characters, but not much plot. It just sort of ambled along.

Why do I hate this book?

Let me count the ways. This is my 2nd read/listen for this author and definitely my last. The only way I was able to go through it was by putting it on fast settings. The pace of her stories are just too slow for me, the characters are selfish and don't draw me in. This one in particular was distasteful to me because I felt she was too preachy and one sided with her social commentary and views on immigration. By the 1st chapter, I got it illegal immigrants are "undocumented" and "have done nothing wrong", "except went to work every day". A LEGAL immigrant myself, I will leave a debate about those who breach our country's immigration laws for another forum, I will just say that the premise of the story was completely unrealistic. A woman who lived here all her life, got married, divorced, gave birth, and worked, yet never had to show proof of residence in the US; has no mexican citizenship, yet gets deported to Mexico; gets detained, without her son being allowed to see her or talk to her over the phone; this is not how the system works and I have personally been through the system myself. I also could not stand that little boy who was just annoyingly selfish and rude to his dad. I had a similar opinion after reading "Table For 5" which took half the book to get us through one day of the story. Never again.

Enjoyable

I selected one of the books the Lakeshore series on a lark from my local library and have gone on to read/listen to the entire Lakeshore Chronicles series. It's and enjoyable series when you are looking for light, easy reading/listening.

Yes. The caracters are very lively and good written.

Hard to choose. it is several of them. perhaps the snowman episode.

If you could sum up Super In The City in three words, what would they be?

Crazy Good. Yes.

What did you like best about this story?

Zephyr! Best heroine ever. Better than Carrie in Sex and the City. Funny, odd, caring, crazy, the kind of girl I'd want to hang out with!

What about Emily Janice Cards performance did you like?

Her really solid voices. There wasn't a question abut who was talking. Lovely French accent, which can be painful if done wrong.

If you could take any character from Super In The City out to dinner, who would it be and why?

Zephyr! We would have such a good time gossiping about everything!

This was such a crazy story. I laughed so much, which is worth five stars alone. Add in all the unique characters and you have a hit. I really loved the Sterling Girls and of course Gregory. Give this book a listen. You will love it!

"Enjoyed" the movie more

The novel is beautifully written with prose and imagery that, to me, provides new ways of looking at nature and fertility. Yet, the story is so languid and dry that it takes forever to get anywhere. This novel is brilliantly written, but I really enjoyed the movie more, although they are really two completely different things.

How did this thing ever become a best seller?

What would have made The Witches of Eastwick better?

Never to have been written! How did this thing become a best seller? The story is bad and the people in the book are all so nasty and unlikable that you want them all to just die by the end of the book. What was the point of this mess and it is gross about sex and woman.

Has The Witches of Eastwick turned you off from other books in this genre?

I don't know but I do know I will never read anything by John Updike again!

I really was looking forward to this book. I had heard it was nothing like the movie so I did not go into it thinking it would be. However, I have never read a book before that makes you hate every person in it and can also makes you sick with the gross details of the women's monthly and what they do with their fluids. Mr. Updike must hate woman big time to write this book. Good God what did his mother do to him as a kind for him to feel the way he does about woman?

Bewitched!

This is a brilliant novel by one of the best contemporary writer. It is full of fun, sadness, wisdom, and deep understanding of life's desires.

I'm not really sure what I was wanting to gain....

....from reading this book.....I had seen the movie years ago and thought it was pretty good and I think Jack Nicholson is the PERFECT Darryl Van Horne....just what you imagine him to be while reading the book. The book...at times....made me feel a bit uncomfortable because of all the wanton sexual escapades between Darryl and the 3 women/witches (Alexandra, Jane, and Sukie. I really like the women when they were struggling with everyday life situations and I loved Sukie and her happy-go-lucky spirit. Jane was just a bit too brash for me to feel any kind of emotion towards her other than a bit of dislike. Alexandra was the typical reminder of how all women seem to be too hard on themselves and worry to much about weight.....illness......looks......children.....etc.

The book was funny in places but it was more of a heavy type read and the ending was really not that happy......I felt a bit sad and disheartened by it and it really wasn't what I thought would be a more light....quirky type of read. I guess I was just expecting more and so therefore I was letdown.

Not very good chick lit.

Actually, it's Christian Chick Lit, really. The characters are SO judgemental. Kendall is a bimbo, and it really shows that the author is painfully white,with no knowledge of hispanic culture, repeating that Ana is latino this and latino that. SO annoying. I hated it. I would give it a 0 if I could.

I am glad they figured out how to pronounce the Spanish. This story is one of my comfort reads. It isn't ground breaking or world changing but I enjoy it as a story.

I wanted to like this book

I've read some other Sophie Kinsella books that I loved and laughed out loud at-this story was not one of them. I disliked the narration-it seemed tinny and unpleasant and I had a difficult time enjoying the story because of the narration. It felt like the narrator was talking too fast. I also couldn't deal with all the swearing and off color comments. There was just so much of it that I stopped listening and wasn't looking forward to see what happened. I will try other books by this author and hope for better luck. I absolutely loved "I've Got Your Number ".

Amazing, thoroughly brilliant.

Absolutely amazing stuff. I could hardly believe how much I enjoyed this book. The narration was lively and enjoyable (adorable accents) and the story itself was brilliant. I really do enjoy Marian Keyes' portrayal of strong, smart and yet flawed women. I think that much of her brilliance lies in her ability to pull her reader in with humour, and then deliver her sucker punch. I also liked that it was a big fat long unabridged book - totally creditworthy! :)

I got this book, because I heard that Dakota Johnson was in the movie coming out in 2016. This book had me laughing even though I'm not single any more I felt like I coukd relate. it's a great story and it has a lot of truth to it. I suggest listening to it.

I love this book so much , it was a fun book to listen to on the bus and at work. The characters were exciting and funny and being single it certainly made sense the craziness of not being able to find the one. It was weird to see parts of myself in each character and realizing that I need to really let go.

Sister Sister is Sensational!

Eric Jerome Dickey at his best! You'll know and love these unforgettable urban charactures, that will take you on an emotional ride from begining to end. One minute it's laugh out loud funny, the next, it's painstaking, heart felt emotions that will have you wishing you could just reach out to all the characters and hug them....I loved this book!

Did not like it at all. I wasted a credit and I really wish I could return it.

What would have made Sister, Sister better?

The book has a decent storyline but it just too wordy for no reason and it just seem to drag on. I couldn't seem to connect to this book.

Not his best work

This book is not a real page-turner like the author's Gideon saga. The only character of interest was Chiquita, who was noticeably overshadowed by Inda. The narrator for Inda lacks creative range, which made the book seem to drag on even longer. Pass on this one, ladies, and use your credits on another one of EJD's best sellers.

Funny!!

I really enjoyed this book. The main character is so regular she might be your best friend...the best friend that moved away and now struggles to just meet somebody to have lunch with, and the result of her search are BOTH disastrous and hilarious.

I really liked this book and was sad to have it end. The narrator got irritating at times but the book was just too good to care.

Is it over yet?

I kept waiting for it to get better. Never got better and it seemed to take forever to go away.

The reader did an ok job with what she had to work with, the characters, scene, and entire story was boring to the point of nausea. Speaking of points, there wasn't one.

I love Notaro!

She is such a funny author. Just separate yourself from the world for a while and enjoy this book. Yes, it's silly and tongue in cheek, but that's part of the charm. Notaro can always make me laugh. The "Idiot Girls" books will make you snort out-loud with laughter!

So negative it was hard to listen to

The combination of the negative narration with the negative writing was too much to bear! I couldn't even finish part one. On top of the negative experiences the author encountered in WA, she also went on an on with her own self-hateful comments. Too much. Maybe if she'd lightened the mood with something positive every now and then it would have been tolerable.
