If you like QI and the like, you'll love this!

What made the experience of listening to The Museum of Curiosity: The Complete Gallery 3 the most enjoyable?

The fact that it's a collection of interviews with different figures, all from very different walks of life, means it's a great collection that you can just dip in and out of, and always be sure of a laugh, a giggle, and a though provoking moment.

Title: Ladies of Letters Go Crackers (BBC Radio 4, 11th Series)

Author: Lou Wakefield, Carole Hayman

Narrator: Prunella Scales, Patricia Routledge

Format: Original Recording

Length: 1 hr and 9 mins

Language: English

Release date: 01-14-11

Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 19 votes

Genres: Radio & TV, Entertainment

Publisher's Summary:

It's Christmas and the Ladies of Letters are busy stuffing homemade turkey sausages, adding hot pepper to their mulled wine and giving each other totally unsuitable Christmas presents.

Vera has just returned from a festive trip to the Holy Land, where she has purchased Mary Mother of Jesus Jam and realised that the only universal religion is shopping. Then she and her family face homelessness when a heartless bank buys up The Bothy for redevelopment.

Irene, meanwhile, is inundated with family visiting for the Festive Season and is annoyed that Vera seems too caught up in her own concerns to consider hers. But Irene has to hold back on her grievances when Vera's daughter, Karen, finds a lump - not as Vera originally thought, in her Nigella-style Christmas gravy - but in her breast.

As family descend on them both, pressure mounts and Christmas chaos inevitably ensues in this 11th series of the radio comedy. Prunella Scales and Anne Reid star in this fractious festive series of the popular BBC Radio 4 comedy.

Members Reviews:

Not quite the same without Patricia Routledge!

I adore the series, but while the story is very good, I missed Ms. Routledge's wonderful Vera Smalls. Not the best in the series, but as it seems to be the last,I would recommend it as you will hear the end of storylines that have been woven through the series.

I do so wish there were more!

Good, but not read by Patricia Routledge

Vera is read by someone else this time (the cover art on this page reads Anne Reid)

ladies of letters go crackers

I loved this audible book. Very funny as are all the titles in this series

Missing Patricia Routledge

I do enjoy listening to this series but am missing the original cast. But it's still well worth the money.

Immense, clever, fast sharp fun. Get it

Any additional comments?

What can I say. I have all 3 seasons but it great. The story is creative and hilarious, add the Dickensian style and it just gets funnier. The language is sharp and witty and you often miss a joke for the sheer slickness of the delivery. If you like sharp clever language you will love this. A bit like Stephen Fry on speed. And goodness, the Admiral on his flagship, the HMS Ggghhhrrrrrr !!! Get it and annoy your colleagues with the best one liners ever. The books are comic genius, I know, I have spent so long looking for something like this.

Fantastic series, I wish there was more

I just love the surreal humour, reminiscent of the Goon Show, and the whole cast does a great job!

Excellent !!

Whew, had to wait FAR too long for volume 3 to appear.

Just as good as the previous two series- give your laugh muscles a real good workout.

Completely excellent and the funniest thing the BEEB have put out in years.

Expectations exceeded

I came late to the Bleak Expectations series having missed it on Radio 4 but after a few friends praised it I thought I would give it go on Audible. I wasn't disappointed and chuckled my way through the cod-melodrama of seasons one and two; particularly enjoying the moustach-twizzling evil of Anthony Head. The third series is the strongest to date and won't disappoint. Do start at the beginning if you have never listened before, you won't be sorry.

Bleak Expectations

Absolutely love this . This may seem an odd choice for an 81 year old !

It may seem quite demented but the humour and word play are wonderful. Always play it when feeling down. Full marks to writers and cast. Thank you.Patricia.

Family Guy and Philosophy brings together low-brow, potty-mouthed, cartoon humor and high-brow philosophical reflection to deliver an outrageously hilarious and clever exploration of one of TVs most unrelenting families. (Okay, its not that high-brow.)

A sharp, witty, and absurd exploration of one of television's most unrelenting families and one of the biggest-selling TV series ever on DVD, now in its fourth season, this audiobook:

Freakin Sweet!

I ordered this book thinking it looked both interesting and humorous. As a Family Guy fan, I was not disappointed! I really enjoyed this book. The essays are witty, funny, and intelligent. There are references to the psychological and societal aspects of Family Guy as well.

I read this book in two sittings. I just devoured it. If you are a Family Guy fan who just knows there's something more going on in the show THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! These essays give so much insight and I couldn't have been more pleased with the essays themselves.

Ignore the reviewer who read 5 pages (why even review or buy the book for that matter?) and the reviewer who said the title is misleading (really?! READ the title!)

Get this book. It's fun and smart! Yeah I just called Family Guy smart. WHAT THE DEUCE!?!

Horrible book, the writes try to be funny but ...

Horrible book, the writes try to be funny but come across as pathetic, some contributors write like they have never seen the series. Very shallow.

Five Stars

This is a good quality product. It more than met my expectations. It arrived on-time and with no issues.

Great Book

Loved it!!! Any Family Guy fan would love to recieve this as a gift

Awesome, hilarious, and thought provoking... who knew Peter was so deep????

So many wonderful things in this book. I really enjoyed reading it!

Title: The Lady in the Van (Dramatised)

Author: Alan Bennett

Narrator: Maggie Smith, Adrian Scarborough

Format: Unabridged

Length: 1 hr and 32 mins

Language: English

Release date: 06-26-09

Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited

Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 36 votes

Genres: Radio & TV, Entertainment

Publisher's Summary:

In the 1970s, an eccentric old lady called Miss Shepherd lives in an old caravan opposite Bennett's house in Camden. That is until new parking regulations come into force - and he suggests moving the van onto his driveway...

Members Reviews:

Hillarious

This is a gem. The language is brilliant with the true British understated comedy. Maggie Smith is excellent but Adrian Scarborough steals the show with his superb caricature

Laughter through the tears

What did you love best about The Lady in the Van (Dramatised)?

I loved how Maggie Smith's voice can contain such poignancy and humor at the very same time.

What did you like best about this story?

I found myself admiring its humanity and its sensitive approach to the subject of aging.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There is a section in the last "act" of this play for voices that's flooring in its beauty and pacing, as Margaret, for the very first time, opens up and talks about her difficult relationship with music.

Performance Par excellence

This an amazing story about the most common people that one may meet in life but dealt deftly with expertise. Unusual nuances unexpected turns at every poignant corner of the unfolding events

Feelings and softness handled with not so much as a whit of mushiness

Yet plenty of wit and humor interspersed occasionally with the right sarcasm make-for riveting reading

The performance is undoubtedly one of the most outstanding I have ever come across. So vastly visual considering it is only the engaging of voices modulated beautifully and so aptly

One gets to watch with one's mind's eye the acts unfold and not merely listen to the audio

It is no wonder Dame Maggie Smith and Mr Alan Bennett and Mr Adrian Scarborough have reached the heights they are at .

Kudos and many thanks to audible.com for bringing this to the

enthusiastic listener.

Memorable

It's many days since I listened to this dramatization and I still can't get it out of my head. It haunts you because it's so real and because the lady in the van is such denial. There are lovely pieces like when he says she has a lot of success when she stands her ground with officials and it's because they can't stand the smell so do whatever will get her out of there fast. I am using my new credits on more Alan Bennett dramatizations. They are excellent. I love that you can hear the audios as there are some books I would have bought had this not been possible, and then been disappointed with the reader.

The Lady in the Van - by Alan Bennett

I was totally engrossed in this book. The storyline was both, very humorous and at times, quite sad, when it became apparent that the lady was not having an easy life.

Maggie Smith was wonderful as the lady in

another brilliant story from Alan Bennett.

I just did not want the story to end.
