The Scarifyers is a series of rip-roaring tales of comedic supernatural intrigue set in 1930s Britain, distilling the likes of Dick Barton, The Avengers, The Devil Rides Out and Quatermass into cracking new audio adventures. The Scarifyers is broadcast on BBC Radio 4 Extra, and has been described in the national press as "rollicking good fun", "a slice of audio perfection", "the smartest and most enjoyable thing on British radio", and "like Tintin but with the lights out".
This is the eighth Scarifyers adventure, and stars David Warner (The Omen, Time Bandits), Terry Molloy (Doctor Who, The Archers) and Gareth David-Lloyd (Torchwood).
When a haunted chess set causes consternation at the British Chess Championships, and a horse magically materialises in Kettering Agricultural Museum, MI:13 are called to investigate.
Harry Crow (David Warner) and Professor Dunning (Terry Molloy) follow the trail of inexplicable happenings to an unremarkable terraced house in South Wales, home to the mysterious Mr Merriman (David Benson). He's very old, and very mad; but is there more to Merriman than first appears?
Meanwhile, in the southwest of England, famed archeologist Ralegh Radford (Ewan Bailey) is on the verge of the greatest discovery of the age. Britain's Tutankhamen, the press are calling it. But what he certainly isn't expecting to unearth is boisterous 1400-year-old knight Glewlwyd Gafaelfawr (Gareth David-Lloyd). As Crow and Dunning unravel an unlikely plot to resurrect Britain's greatest-ever hero, the race is on to stop sinister forces at home and abroad from finding...The Thirteen Hallows.

What the word 'Awesome' was invented for.
Never a dull moment with Prof Dunning (dun dun dun dun ) and Harry Crow. Such a shame Lionheart (The much loved and missed Nicholas Courtney) died but Crow fills the role nicely.
    Oh no.... not Wales......
    saved again
loved every minute. Now onto the next one. harry and dunning to the rescue of this great island
    Laughs galore
As usual with this series the laughs come thick and fast. Perhaps not the strongest story but the presentation and acting cannot be faulted.
If you are new to the Scary first then Denge Marsh is a great place to start. That said this is highly recommended.

Title: Sir David Frost's Hollywood Greats: Shirley MacLaine
    Author: Shirley MacLaine
    Narrator: David Frost
    Format: Original Recording
    Length: 57 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 10-25-12
    Publisher: BBC Worldwide Limited
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Radio & TV, Entertainment
    Publisher's Summary:
In this fascinating series, veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost talks to a selection of his favourite film stars, beginning with Shirley MacLaine, who won an Oscar for her role in Terms of Endearment and starred in the third series of Downton Abbey. Shirley gives a frank account of her time in show business, from her big break as a stand-in for actress Carol Haney to the huge success of films such as Sweet Charity and Irma la Douce. She remembers meeting Alfred Hitchcock for the first time (remarking that he looked like a ball) and her crush on "Rat Pack" stalwart Dean Martin. Shirley also recounts how she became enthralled in the glamour and glitz of Hollywood when she took her younger brother, Warren Beatty, to the local movie house. She is eloquent on the subject of her extraordinary life, from mixing with America's political elite such as the powerful Kennedy family to UFOs and her sincere faith in reincarnation.

An interesting hour in the company of a golden great
This radio interview with Hollywood and Broadway star, Shirley Maclaine, conducted by David Frost, was first broadcast on BBC Radio 2 in Sept 2012. At 78 years old, with experience of over 60 years of American show business, as well as extensive involvement in American politics and New Age spirituality, Shirley Maclaine makes an ideal candidate for a wide-ranging and entertaining interview. This particular recording comes across as pretty typical Radio 2 fare, David Frost steering a safe and non-sensational course through the subject's professional and personal life, and allowing Maclaine plenty of space to discourse at length on her life and times, her career milestones, the key events within her life and also to range into more general topics of life, love, death and beyond.
Shirley Maclaine is clearly fully at ease with Frost, and her easy conversational style is both an engaging and an entertaining listen, having a forthrightness that is endearing and, at times, quite heart-warming. The show's editing is a little raggy in places, and the interviewer's live interjections can occasionally grate, but neither of these faults really detract from what is essentially a fascinating glimpse into the life, times and innermost heart of one of Hollywood's truly golden greats. What a pity it is only an hour long!

A great classic collection. Nicholas Parsons gives commentary between episodes relating backstory and history of the people involved. Interesting to see how the show has developed and the influence Parsons has brought.
Of course, it's all brilliantly funny, and essential listening. Part of my need-them-to-live J.A.M. collection, which scares off the black dog days.

If Only There Were More Of These!
I didn't really know much about Tom Corbett before listening to this, but I'm a fan now! It's a real throw back to the Golden Age of Science Fiction complete with roaring rocketships, laser pistols, colonies throughout the solar system, and square-jawed heroes defending the Solar System from threats in outer space. However, like all good adaptations, these tropes are given a 21st century makeover while still retaining the fun of times on by.
All of the voice actors did an excellent jobs performing the story, and a round of applause for the sound engineers and their work on the special effect sounds. This was actually adapted from a series of comics by Bluewater, which is good not only because it lead me to this but...well, let's face it, what where the artist thinking on those comics?!
Maybe it could have been longer, I would have liked that, but it was adapting only about three or so issues. At least a sequel, an original Colonial Radio Theater production I might add, has since been released, with hopefully more to come.
All in all a great escape that feels like listening to a Silver Age comic come to life (in a good way). If you're into science fiction or comics, or looking to be introduce to the Colonial Radio Theater, start with this. You'll be glad you did.
    Rollicking Pulp Space Adventure
Would you listen to Tom Corbett Space Cadet again? Why?
I would listen to it again - the soundscape and detail were very good.
    Any additional comments?
This is a pulp adventure in the best styling of the golden age of Science Fiction.
    Nice Job
    Any additional comments?
Very nicely done! Still retained a little of the flavor of the old Tom Corbet radio show but it has been up dated with modern vocabulary and sound effects. IMHO the plot and characters were as complex and well done as most of the original Star Trek episodes. I hope the Colonial Radio Players will make more of these. If you are a sci fi fan give it a try, you'll probably be as pleasantly surprised as I was.
    Colonial Radio did it again!!
Bought this for a trip. The entire family loved it. The voices became our friends. Well written and exciting.
    An hour of joy
This is exactly what I hoped for! Just some good space fun. Not expensive so download and enjoy.

Hilarious to listen to and great for when you're working on something that's mind-numbing
Hilarious to listen to and great for when you're working on something that's mind-numbing. Tom Price is a wonderful narrator.
    Tom Price owned this.
Tom Price (Andy from Torchwood) is the best thing about this audiobook. He really pulls it together. His narration is amazing. The way he read was great. He did a variety of accent, Welsh, Russian, and British and he excelled at them all. He really brought out the characters.
Mr. Llewellyn on the other hand, disappointed me. I didn't like this story. What I expect from a Torchwood story is mystery, twists and turns, suspense. But there was none of that in Fallout. The storyline was straightforward, you could guess where it was going all the time. Nothing ever went wrong for the heroic characters. There wasn't really a threat for them, you know? That is not what I want for a Torchwood novel or any novel.
If you like Tom Price or his character from Torchwood, I'd say give this one a listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
Six BBC Radio dramatisations of short stories from the master of comedy, P. G. Wodehouse. Mr Mulliner is a pub raconteur with an endless supply of improbable tales featuring his innumerable relations. There is the story of 'Honeysuckle Cottage', haunted by the spirit of a romantic novelist set on forcing marital bliss on the unwilling resident. 'A Slice of Life' also features a spooky old house, plus a young heiress and a determined suitor. 'The Smile that Wins' centres on a dyspeptic detective whose grisly grin is his secret weapon, while 'Open House' is an account of frightening aunts, terrifying ingenues and resourceful butlers. 'Came the Dawn' is a tale of indomitable love, parental obstruction and unexpected opportunities and the final yarn, 'Mulliners Buck-U-Uppo', tells of a pale curate rendered fearless after the ingestion of a miracle potion. Starring Richard Griffiths as Mr Mulliner.
    Members Reviews:
    Blissful listening!
Mr Mulliner is one of PG Wodehouse's less well-known creations but he deserves as much recognition as Jeeves and Wooster. A strange combination of pub bore and fantasist, he whiles away his time in the Angler's Rest spinning unbelievable yarns for his fellow drinkers, all of which he insists are true. Honeysuckle Cottage, the first story in this collection, is a hilarious tale of a house haunted by a writer of romantic fiction; I also really enjoyed Buck-u-Uppo, about a meek young curate whose life is transformed when he accidentally drinks a miracle cordial meant for elephants. All the stories are well acted, especially Mr Mulliner himself, played by the late great Richard Griffiths. Since I bought this title, I have listened to it at least once a week; it never fails to make me laugh.
PGW and Richard Griffiths at their finest...
I would thoroughly recommend these stories to all PGW fans. Less well known than young Berties, The Anglers Rest customers, Mrs. P and Mr. M are equally as funny. More PGW genius and perfectly dramatised.
    Absolutely delightful.
I could listen to Richard Griffiths forever, and Wodehouse's slightly implausible yet irresistible stories are just the ticket for a diverting listen.

What caused the financial mess we're in? And how do we get out of it? Two of the great economic thinkers of the 20th century had sharply contrasting views. John Maynard Keynes believed that government spending could create employment and longer-term growth. His contemporary and rival Friedrich Hayek believed that investments have to be based on real savings rather than increased public spending or artificially low interest rates.
Keynes's biographer, Professor Lord Skidelsky, takes on modern-day followers of Hayek in a debate at the London School of Economics. Paul Mason, economics editor of Newsnight, is in the chair. Speakers include George Selgin, Duncan Weldon, and Jamie Whyte.
