Um, just read the book.....

What did you like best about The One-Year Book of Psalms? What did you like least?

The voices of the folks are nice, but too much talking, not enough reading.

Title: The Modern Scholar

Subtitle: The Hebrew Bible

Author: Lawrence H. Schiffman

Narrator: Lawrence H. Schiffman

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 35 mins

Language: English

Release date: 08-18-08

Publisher: Recorded Books

Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 95 votes

Genres: Religion & Spirituality, Bibles

Publisher's Summary:

The Jewish Bible was collected in ancient Israel over a long period of time. The first books of the Bible are the Five Books of Moses, in Hebrew, the Torah, or by its Greek name, the Pentateuch, meaning "five books." For the Hebrew Scriptures, the Biblical canon was divided into three parts, Torah, Nevi'im, and Ketuvim. Christians have a completely different term for this Jewish canon that constitutes about one half of the Christian Bible. Because Christians have an additional set of texts, namely, the Gospels and the Epistles, Christians refer to the earlier material as the Old Testament in contradistinction to the New Testament.

This intellectually satisfying course examines the complex issues of the historicity of the biblical account as well as the deep theological and religious ideas that the Bible teaches. We will sample approaches both traditional and modern, making use of the works of a broad sampling of scholars - ancient, medieval, and modern - to understand the message of the Hebrew Scriptures and the stories they told. Archaeology and the perspectives gained from our knowledge of the Ancient Near East will be at the forefront, allowing us to approach the Bible with the help of the manifold tools of modern research while retaining respect for the Bible and its ancient message.

An useful introduction

What did you love best about The Modern Scholar?

Lectures are in reasonable length segments so I can think about one lecture before going onto another.

Did the narrator do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Not applicable

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Not applicable

Any additional comments?

This is an introduction to the subject, so it covers a lot of material. The series of lectures starts by giving the necessary background. The necessary technical terminology is introduced throughout the book

When people start interpreting the Hebrew Bible they generally have a point of view, ranging from the extremes of Biblical Minimalism and Biblical Literalism. The lecturer does have a point of view, as I would expect any competent scholar to have, but he takes the time to fairly discuss the other points of view throughout the course of the lectures, and states what is his opinion and why.

The fact that he has a specific point of view does not automatically imply that the others are either more or less correct.

Fairly good introductory material

Professor Schiffman is clearly extremely knowledgeable about the subject material, and this audiobook is fairly well organized and narrated, but the problem is that Prof. Schiffman is a practising orthodox Jew. So if you're looking for an _objective_ critical analysis about the origins and evolution of the Hebrew Bible, this is probably not your best resource. Nevertheless, the audiobook is very informative and if you don't mind listening to the account of the history of the Hebrew Bible from the orthodox, yet not in-your-face-mythical, Jewish perspective, then this is a good place to start. Just keep in mind that when Prof. Schiffman mentions that the "Bible minimalists" disagree with a particular view of his (or speaks of there being other opinions on the issue that also hold academic weight), it means that Prof.

International Children's Bible

This is a very well dramatized version of the International Children's Bible, the description is incorrect.

Excellent dramatization, but not NKJV

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed listening to this very much... but could not give it 5 stars overall because I was looking for something that I could read along with if I wanted to.. and while it follows the story, the wording is entirely different from the NKJV. A very enjoyable production, but if you are looking for NKJV text, look elsewhere.

If we think it's tough now...

Would you consider the audio edition of Joshua to be better than the print version?

Life during the days of Joshua and the Israelites who conquered Caanan was miserable, brutal and short for both conqueror and conquered. But it still seems terrible to think of wiping out all the inhabitants of the land so that they could live in their towns and settlements. The Media Group that does The Bible Experience has done another great recording with voices and background sounds and music to heighten the experience. The only thing that would make it seem more real is to feel the heat and smell the aromas of that place.

What other book might you compare Joshua to and why?

I would compare it to Exodus because of the battle scenes and seeing how God is working through this band of followers who are threatened with annihilation every time they win a battle.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

The narrators provide a sense of reality and excitement.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I listen to audiobooks as I drive to and from work every day, so listening to it all in one sitting is not ever going to happen, but I appreciate the fact that they do not give chapter announcements. That would be very distracting and make it seem more like a book than a story.

Outstanding production.

Would you consider the audio edition of Joshua to be better than the print version?

Yes. This audio version has excellent sound effects and the right ratio of music to words. The producers have chosen very talented readers to play the roles of Joshua, God; the army commanders and the kings against whom Joshua's army fought. The narrative is brilliant and the story one of the most exciting military campaigns in the Bible. Why, to my knowledge, a movie has not been made of this book of Joshua, mystifies me. It is excellent material. My wife, who listened to some of it with me, said that she "felt goosebumps" all over at certain times.
