Jesus traveled a road to Emmaus with two followers. He showed them from the Scriptures why he needed to suffer and revealed himself as risen. Jesus’ vacant tomb provides our salvation!

Jesus’ crucifixion was different in the most amazing way—he was carrying out the will of his Father who sent him to save.

“Love one another as I have loved you.” Jesus’ Maundy Thursday command takes on a new quality when we see what he was willing to suffer for us.

Jesus traveled a road into Jerusalem. He was hailed as a king as the people shouted “Hosanna!”. He rode into the city where he would die for us and rise again to give us life.

Paid in full! Jesus’ words demonstrated that his death was more than just another in a long line of Roman executions. His death paid the price for the sins of the whole world, including yours and mine.

The Road to the Empty Tomb - The Resurrection and the Life

Jesus spoke these words so that scripture would be fulfilled (Psalm 69:21, Psalm 22:15). Even as he was suffering and dying, Jesus was fully aware of his purpose to complete the work of the Father who had sent him.

Jesus experienced the agony of God-forsakenness—the agony of hell—as he hung on the cross. He suffered so that we would never have to experience the pain of being forsaken by God, but instead live with him forever.
