The world’s idea of a king and John 19’s description of a king greatly stand at odds with each other. But the king who appears bloody, beaten, and defeated is the greatest king and our greatest treasure.

This unlikely witness got a room ready for a purpose he did not understand. On Maundy Thursday, Jesus used that room to institute the Lord’s Supper.

We find it so easy to compare ourselves to others. When we do, voices in our heads try to convince us we are not good enough, pretty enough, smart enough. God’s voice tells us we are precious, loved, redeemed and beautifully created.

Before Jesus suffered and died for us on the cross, he rode a lowly colt into Jerusalem. This humble procession reminds us of Christ’s work as a whole—he lowered himself and put us first to save us.

Bigger house, better cars—we want great things, but earthly blessings wear out. Jesus reminds us to store up spiritual treasures first—because they will last forever.
