My favorite Western novel.
I love western- themed books and I love the Western states even more despite the fact I live in Pennsylvania. I read this book the first time many years ago and when I saw it come up during a search, I couldnât help but buy it. I love it even more now. Though itâs a âromanticâ book it isnât like todayâs writing. It keeps to authentic lives in the 1800s and the way of life for those who lived then, still fraught with proper roles for women, for example. What shines through is descriptions of basic human flaws and glories, love, a sense of right and wrong, grit and determination to make their lives better. I wish Mr Wister had written many more books.
"Better than my dreams"
A romantic western. Still appealing. A good read.
"The Virginian" is considered by many to be the "model" for westerns that were written after 1902 - the year the first edition of this book was published, and then soon became a bestseller.
There is the tall, confident cowboy hero, the railroad, cattle and cattle drives, horses, the beautiful and wild western frontier, ranchers and their ranches, rustlers, native Americans, the laws of the lariat, gunfights, the sardonic-mean-dangerous-evil villain, and the pretty young girl. Tied up with a narrative and that there is our western.
Having read Westerns by Max Brand, Louis L'Amour, Zane Grey, Oliver Strange (the Sudden series of books - that one can no longer find in US bookstores today sadly) I reckon the plot indeed shares many of the same story elements with the rest of 'em. For me it never gets old - I remain fond of the Western, even as this genre has faded into the sunset.
The authentic old west remains alive in this book.
I read this book to gain background information for a far future western slanted SF story I want to write, and became fascinated with the seeds I found of so many great western stories. I saw those movies when I was growing up in the 40's and 50's (and TV series later), and I clearly see how they derive from this 1902 book.
