Great Lovecraft horror

This is a fantastic example of Lovcraftian horror at its best. I love his vision of cats as loyal brave companions protecting their owners from unseen horrors....of course...it's terribly racist. Lovecraft had some very pre-natzi ideas about racial superiority that turns up in his work with disturbing frequency. If you can acknowledge this and accept it as work from a more ingnorant age and if you can have patience with his overly formal writing style...this is a prime example of why Lovecraft had an amazing imagination. What the main character finds is truly frightening and if you can push through to the punch line it's very mind blowing.

Haunting, not very scary, but a classic Lovecraft

A Lovecraftian novel - his themes tend to be much more interesting than his stories. This one is interesting, but not a memorable read

Master of Horror

I was never a big fan of Lovecraft. I started by reading "At the Mountains of Madness." That bored me, I was told later that was a mistake. I read this book at the encouragement of a friend and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I'm a fan now!

Typical Lovecraft

Well written short with the typical Lovecraft vocabulary and style, however a little dated for the times. Enjoyable, fast paced and suspenseful.

Ruined by terrible narration.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

If the narration had been better then I have no doubt that I would be giving this 5 stars; the only word I can think of to describe Cathy Dobson's narration is "bizarre." She sounds like she is trying to speak with lower cadence, and she holds the last syllable of each word too long. I can only assume this is to facilitate the feature that allows you to speed up the playback. It doesn't help to speed it up however. Her narration is so off putting I could not bear to listen to any more of it, so frustrating.

Not Published During Kate Chopin's Lifetime - Way Ahead of Her Time

I have been a fan of Kate Chopin for some time. I first became I interested in her work when I read "The Story of An Hour". I thought it was clever and somewhat daring for its time. I then read "The Awakening" and discovered it was quite controversial for it's time. It has to do with a married woman's struggling with sensuality, freedom, and fidelity at a time when these were forbidden topics. I felt then she was ahead of her time. Then I read "The Storm". Holy Cow! As I understand it, this was not published during her life time. I cannot decide if that was lucky for her (probably!) or unlucky. It is not obscene by today's standards, but there would have probably been protests marches at that time... I have learned a lot by reading fiction. There is occasionally references to The Chinaberry Tree in southern fiction. And once again here, a Chinaberry tree is struck by lighting. So what? In studying this short story, I found out that Chinaberries were used for beads to make rosaries. Hmm... The Story of An Hour and The Awakening are two of Miss Chopin's most famous works. I am surprised this is not right beside them. Additionally, if one wishes to more fully appreciate this work, there is a prequel to it called At The Cadian Ball.

An Interesting Conversation About The Universe

Sometimes, I find myself unsatisfied with Asimov's short stories, but this one was pretty damn good.

This story is simply a conversation between scientist coworkers about life, the universe, its origins, and our place within these constructs.

Asimov goes above and beyond the average sci/fi author with his vast knowledge of everything scientific and philosophical. I actually had to listen to this short, 17-minute story twice before I fully grasped all of the ideas put forward entirely.

Despite it being very heavy on the scientific language used, this is still a great little listen. Definitely worth the 4 or 5 bucks or whatever I paid for it. No regrets.

So confusing that it makes perfect sense

I cannot believe that woman- that timid, overwrought, pansy pulled away my favorite wallpaper! I like it here, seeing and doing and experiencing the sameness of this room day after night after day. I especially like to creep up under the blackberry bushes... Leave my elevator alone! And get this Bell Jar off my head.
