Publisher's Summary:
Rearming Hinduism is a handbook for intellectual resistance. Through an astute and devastating critique of Hinduphobia in today's academia, media and popular culture, Vamsee Juluri shows us that what the Hinduphobic worldview denies virulently is not only the truth and elegance of Hindu thought, but the very integrity and sanctity of the natural world itself.
By boldly challenging some of the media age's most popular beliefs about nature, history, and pre-history along with the Hinduphobes' usual myths about Aryans, invasions and blood-sacrifices, Rearming Hinduism links Hinduphobia and its hubris to a predatory and self-destructive culture that perhaps only a renewed Hindu sensibility can effectively oppose. It is a call to see the present in a way that elevates our desa and kala to the ideals of the sanathana dharma once again.
"For a civilization is not just buildings and machines, but its people, their thought, and their culture. It is a way of knowing the world, a way of giving meaning and value to the contents of life. It is a resource, most of all, for living intelligently."
Members Reviews:
Vamsee has written the book with clarity and insight!
Excellent book. Makes a very interesting reading. The author has articulated some misconceptions that are being circulated in the Western academia, intentionally or otherwise.
It is quite surprising to see and impossible to understand that on the one hand Westerners flock to India to gain peace of mind, and on the other hand those westerners who teach about Hinduism portray it as beastly and violent.
Both these stands cannot be true. Obviously, one is false.
Obviously there is something wrong with the western academia. Sometimes, Indians too, under the influence of westernisation get swayed by these opinions and start being apologetic about this grand "Dharma" which has been spreading the message of harmony and peace to the entire world through we do not know how many thousands of years, or maybe millions of years -- who knows!
This is a book on how to counter the misinformation being spread around in the name of Hinduism studies - which are anything but!..being taught by those who do not understand a bit of it -- or are motivated due to some agenda of their own.
A much needed book
A much needed book to teach this generation difference between secularism and pseudo secularism
and to awaken the Hindus to reassert their identity that was suppressed in the Nehruvian blunders of the post independence era.
Pandemic problem of Hinduphobia: From academia, to media, to broader public life
Juluri has done an extraordinary job of weaving a depiction of how unrelenting hinduphobia is: its doggedly-onesidedness, its methods, its proponents, their biases, the harm perpetrated. Without getting theoretical, in a smooth-flowing conversational style, Juluri raises all the major issues, exposes their absurdity, and talks about the right way to view Hinduism.
Read this very-readable, and original book that weaves the schizophrenic two-lens bias of Hindus as allegedly racially or culturally inferior to allegedly oppressive society which is patriarchal, anti-women, caste-ridden, aryan-invading-nomads. Sorry, no happy alternatives, and no moderate middlegrounds.
What a timely wake up call!
I could not put the book down once I started reading it.
