Publisher's Summary:
Women have made great strides toward equal rights over the past 100 years, especially in the West. But when considering the ongoing fight over reproductive rights and equal pay - and the prevalence of sexual violence and domestic abuse - it is clear that a significant gap still exists. With scripture often cited as justification for the marginalization of women, it is time to acknowledge that one of the final barriers to full equality for women is religion.
Much has been written about the great strides humankind has made in knocking down many long-held religious beliefs, whether related to the age of the earth or the origin of the species. But religion's negative impact on women has been less studied and discussed. This book is a step toward changing that.
Twenty-two women from a variety of backgrounds and Judeo-Christian traditions share their personal stories about how they came to abandon organized religion, and how they discovered life after moving away from religious and supernatural beliefs. Their words serve both as a celebration of all who have taken similar steps under the weight of thousands of years of religious history - and as a source of inspiration for those individuals, especially women, who have deep doubts about their own belief traditions but who don't yet know how to embrace life without falling back on religion.

Unwitting betrayal is still betrayal
I've subscribed to Dr. Garst's blog, the Faithless Feminist, since she began writing it, about the same time this book was published. I resisted buying and reading the book, thinking, "well, I get the benefit of the book by reading the blog." I was wrong. When I finally bought and read the book, which is organised as a series of essays written by women whom Dr. Garst solicited to write of their faith or deconversion journies, the impact of the stories, as a group, was stronger than I anticipated. Here is a group of sincere voices, expressing their emotional responses to their own faith and deconversion experiences, in their own very powerful words. The pains of many different kinds of religious betrayals, witting and unwitting, are real and vivid in these stories. Read them for yourself. Notice how childrenâs sincerity is commandeered by indoctrinated parents into producing unintended and very real collateral religious damage in the lives of our sisters of many different faith traditions. In the end, it is difficult to not give credence to Dr. Garstâs claim that religion is among the most profound influences in the subjugation of women everywhere, including in these United States.
Great addition to my book collection
Wonderful collection of stories. I have many books from secular and atheist authors, but sadly only a small minority of them are written by women. Not only does this collection help promote women's voices but the stories themselves are fascinating and entertaining.
So glad I read this book
What an amazing collection of essays of diverse women and their experiences. I could relate to several of the women. This is helpful for any woman who is thinking of leaving their faith or already have recently. and needs that confidence and reassurance of being a new atheist. my heart broke for some of these women what they had to go through because of religion.
